Cantoners can breathe easy tonight as the Goldhawks cruised to a 24-7 victory over the 2-5 Anchoring University. The Goldhawks, at 3-4 are below 500, but are still in contention to win Woodlands Confrence. This win came after the rousing speech of the Goldhawks head coach, and because of this, moral for the up and coming rookie team has soared.

With three games to go in conference play, Daniel Corsey's Tigers have clinched the Woodlands Conference, marking a seventh triumph in ten years for the Tubrissian school. Utica sit three games ahead of their nearest rivals on 7-0, with three games left to play, and have swept second placed St Croix.

"It feels good to go into the final few games without any pressure at all." Corsey admitted. "This lets us rest some of our main guys a bit more, and prepare for the three tough non-conference games we have lined up."

After back to back shut outs against Northwestern and St Croix, it's hard to believe that Utica will falter now. With an average time of offensive possession topping 35 minutes, a dominant running game, and a tough-as-nails defensive unit, the Tigers certainly have all the required tools to repeat their early NSCF successes and claim a record third title.

"It's hard not to look at this team and compare them to Alzburg-Dyka's first title winning side a few years ago." OSN analyst and former Osarius Firebirds head coach, Harold Matterhorn, explains. "Alzburg-Dyka won that year with some mediocre quarterback play when you put it in perspective. It sounds a bit harsh on Henderson to call him mediocre, but when you look at who he's following; Stanley, Blokhin, Saint, Rhodes... they were all on another level. Henderson is capable, but he's not a game-winner like those guys. The burden of playmaking falls elsewhere. It was the same with Alzburg-Dyka that year, even their own fans didn't seem convinced it would happen until right at the end."

Matterhorn's comparison might seem a bit of a stretch, but given his well-documented disdain for the Tigers, it's difficult not to take his words seriously. It's certainly true that the Royals' triumph that season was built predominantly on defensive prowess and a strong running game, but a lot of championship winning sides follow that formula. It's still far too early to start talking about championships.

Henderson's surprising success -- despite a fairly strong supporting cast, even Corsey dare not claim he had expected a perfect record from the new signal-caller this late in the season, certainly not in the Woodlands conference -- appear to be rooted in his quick release style of play, and conservative decision making. A study of his snaps reveals an average release time of approximately 2.2 seconds, with around three quarters of his throws occurring in less than 2.5 seconds. This makes it difficult to sack him, despite a weakened offensive line compared to past seasons.

"Coach Hardison keeps saying in practice, over and over 'quick release, quick release' and I don't even really think about it anymore. I just take the snap, drop back, look up and throw. It's not really me doing the work, the guys are doing great work on their routes, getting free." Henderson deflects praise with a genuine humility that, unlike some of his predecessors, seems awkward. "I'm just hoping I can keep finding my guys, if we keep this pace, we can get the results we need through non-conference play to secure a high seed. And that's a big deal for us. You can't overestimate the benefits of playing in The Pit when you're in orange and black."

The primary beneficiaries of Henderson's quick, short passes are Kraian tight end Nuguse Selassie and livewire runningback Isaac Sawyer. Sawyer in particular is having a monster year, despite splitting carries with Romeo Brown. The elusive 5'7" halfback has hauled in 34 passes for 388 yards and a touchdown, to compliment his 598 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, putting him on course to finish the regular season with over 1700 all-purpose yards; not far off Rashad Jackson's 1843 yard record for Utica, set in an Osarian Collegiate Gridion League (OCGL) season many years ago.

Sawyer sums up his attitude toward talk of breaking records, though. "I'm not thinking about beating records, if I'm honest. I want to be a champion. If that means I have to split carries with Rome [Romeo Brown] I'm fine with that. And I don't think you'll find a single guy in that locker room who wouldn't sacrifice stats for a winners medal." It is this steely determination, and willingness to 'do what is necessary'* that has seen Utica ruthlessly dispatch of every opponent they have face so far this season, and it's a pattern that seems unlikely to change in the next few weeks.

* a reference to one of the most well-known mantras of the legendary Utica coach, Mike Zampese. Before an OCGL game with arch-rivals Kyoshiku University Steel Wolves, Zampese recalled their previous encounter in the locker room. The Tigers had been bullied into submission in a crushing 38-10 defeat on the road, and suffered several injuries. Zampese used this experience to motivate his team in the return game, explaining that they had been beaten not by a superior team or dirty tactics, but by their failure to 'do what is necessary'. Utica won, giving up a league record amount of yardage in penalties, but Zampese praised their grit in the post-match interview, making numerous references to his players "doing what is/was necessary".

Having already clinched the Woodlands conference championship -- and therefore, a playoff berth -- Daniel Corsey's Utica are in the enviable position of being able to rest starters and key players ahead of three challenging non-conference clashes, starting next week. The Tigers' head coach was quick to point out, though, that finishing 10-0 in conference was still the aim.

"We're gonna rest the starters a bit, yeah. It doesn't make sense to have them out there risking injury if we don't need them to [...] we're facing some tough opposition. The reigning champions are undefeated this year, like us; while RCU and Port Salem are both sitting pretty with just two losses each. Make no mistake, we've really set the bar high." Corsey explained.

When asked if the scheduling was deliberate in order to maximise chances of a high OSPI score -- and thus a better seed -- Corsey was reluctant to commit. "In a way, sure. But that assumes we win all three. I've just sat here and told you we're in for a rough time across those three games, and... does that sound like the talk of a guy who expects to win three games?"

Maurice Henderson, on the other hand, sounds confident. The Tigers' QB has passed for over 2500 yards and 12 touchdowns over his nine games so far this season in NSCF, a trend that is showing little sign of abating. "I don't know what it is but I feel really good out there. I have a great set of guys around me, and the protection has been solid all season. I don't think it's unreasonable to look at this season and think 'yeah, we have a really good shot at this' because you gotta... I mean if you look at the teams in the league I think most would put us in the top three. That's the minimum expectation we should have."

Henderson's offensive output has been solid, as has the Utica offense in general... though they have been dwarfed completely by reigning champions St Augustinus. On average, their would-be championship rivals have put up about eleven points more per game. Tigers defensive co-ordinator Anthony Channa was quick to point out his unit's superiority, though. "Last I checked, we had the best defensive unit in the league. I don't think we've ever been able to honestly claim that in my time here. Now we have that base, that foundation, that we need to get back to the top." Channa told us, as one of the few faces at the Tubrissian school who had a hand in their last NSCF championship. "They have a better offense, that's fine. But defense wins championships."

Bid to host the NSCF 10 Championship: THE KLYDE SPORTSPLEX

Image
The Klyde Sportsplex being used for football, at a Klyde Cyclones home game. Using innovative technology, the stadium's form can be altered dramatically to host almost any other sport with little turn-around.

The Klyde Sportsplex is a multi-sport stadium in Klyde City, North Klyde Fief, Cosumar. At the time it was built (year 988 of the Cosumarite calendar, eleven years ago), it was regarded as one of the most versatile venues in the world in terms of the types of events and sports it can host. A little over a decade later, it still remains one of the finest stadiums in Atlantian Oceania. When used for college football, the Sportsplex can be expanded to seat as many as 106,572. Cosumar is one of the few remaining original NSCF nations and would be honored to host the event that marks a full decade of the competition.

Use: The Klyde Sportsplex has successfully hosted many of the top sporting events here in our beloved Fiefdom, such as the Cosumar Cup Final (soccer) and the CFL Dragon Bowl (professional football). Its regular tennants are Klyde FC (UICA regulars in soccer), the Klyde Cyclones of the CFL, and the Klyde Guardians (lacrosse). The Sportsplex is now looking to host its first major international sporting event. It has finished as a runner-up to host the UICA SBCC and Globe Cup in the past, both bids being narrowly defeated in the end.

Location: Using this map, you can see Klyde's location on the west coast of Klyde Island, which sits just east of mainland Cosumar. Using the first map, you can also see the location of Klyde relative to Ramusok and Stoneshore, should either RCU or Stoneshore College advance to the NSCF Championship. The stadium is situated adjacent to the scenic Klyde Bay - giving fans a fantastic view of the port and ocean beyond. The City of Klyde itself is one of Cosumar's major hubs with a rich urban culture and vibrant arts and music scene. From the pristine beaches to the world-class symphony halls, there are opportunities aplenty for tourists of all tastes. The "Bay Area" as it is known for its relatively moderate weather year-round. Though it can get a bit chilly in the heart of winter, temperatures rarely drop below 25F - or exceed 95F in the summer.

The Fiefdom of Cosumar lies in northeastern Atlantian Oceania near Audioslavia, Thatius and Ratastan (of course, the people of your nation probably learned this in grade-school geography).

Access: O'Reilly International Airport is just a quick 15 minute cab ride from the Sportsplex, and another 10 minutes from downtown Klyde. Underwater rails also connect Klyde to a plethora of destination across the Bay in mainland Cosumar, should you wish to fly into a different city like Ramusok or Centus. The Sportsplex is impossible to miss, sitting boldly next to the sea with the city skyline towering in the background. One can even arrive via a boat ride from the Marina. It is famous for its excellent parking and transportation systems, including free shuttles around the site.

Other Features: The stadium includes deluxe suites, a large selection of foods and beverages (including locally brewed lagers and regional cuisine), a swimming pool, free Wi-Fi and more. It is also certified as being a 100% green eco-friendly stadium and zero-waste facility.
