Coach- "The Match Against Darvale will Decide Everything."
Bandwagon are now 2nd in their group in the IBC 15 with two matches to go.
Coach Adriano Bentley said "The Match Against Darvale will Decide Everything." It's believed in the Bandwagonian Media that Darvale and Bandwagon will decide this group. "Filopines are gone. We've beaten them. Destroyed them" said Basketball Writer Miriam McPartland.

Chiata Times
Where Does This Leave Us?

When we last left our readers, we were questioning about Chiata's chances at succeding in International Basketball, how we used to be able to win big games, and how we seem to lose to lower teams. Fortunately, since the game against Filopines (1st leg) we have done much better. The Stingers picked up where they left off by beating Darvale 94-60. As usual, Pembeton led the scoring with 25 pts. The next game was closer, but Chiata was able to stave off Wolfbenz and win by 8 pts. in a 76-68 nail biter. Another big win over an unranked team, this time against Peruvian Highlands, marked the halfway point of the group stage. Four games won, one bitter game lost. Because of the head-to-head record, Chiata still sat at second behind Filopines. However, the Stingers had an impressive and ever building point difference of positive 92. To start off the second leg, Chiata once again crushed Bandwagon, this time 80-62. Now, the most anticipated game awaited. Chiata traveled to Filopines to see if they could even the score. In a spectacular display of athleticism and sportsmanship from both sides, Chiata edged off a 76-68 win. With moral booming, Chiata returned home to play Darvale. And of course, Darval won. 93-89. 4 pt. difference. Questions that were silenced by the second Filopines game are now raised again. Can Chiata play the big games? Will they continue to lose to lower teams? With all these questions, it's good to have some facts. Chiata still remains on top of the group and are an astounding 6 pts. away from second place. A win against Darvale would have buried a playoff birth, but you get what you get. With only two games remaining, it's safe to assume that Chiata will make the Round of 16. The third place team, Wolfbenz, is also six pts. away and has a pt. difference of -10. Compared to Chiata's 114, 124 point difference in two games is almost a statistical impossibility. Conveniently, Chiata plays Wolfbenz next. If Chiata win, then we're through to the playoffs. If Wolfbenz wins, then we're still through to the playoffs. Probably. Regardless of result, we wont make an appeal about "poor" officiating.

Team fatigued after Olympics roadtrip

It has been a supremely fruitful run in the Olympics Basketball events for both teams, with the women's reaching the Round of 16, and the men's basketball team achieving the gold medal after shutting out Nova Anglicana after a very tense first quarter in the semifinals. Gary Hale and Dominic King were standout performances for Nova Anglicana, which tested the tried and true Electrumite defenses. But, the defenses were simply too strong, winning 77-57 and feeling pumped for their next matchup, Darmen.

Darmen were also strong spirited, as they had defeated very tough teams to make it to the finals of the Olympic tournament. But, Coach Jefferson took advantage of their sloppy, and at times, inaccurate passes to score those desparately needed turnovers. In the end, Electrum defeated Darmen 81–67. With all that said and done, they have had to fly back immediately after the match, even skipping the athlete's closing ceremony to get back into Electrum for the IBC.

And it's been a tough few days for them. Injuries sustained by Greiner, continuing on from the Women's Basketball event have hampered her form, and Tyrone Mirza's leg has been acting a little lame as well. All of these mean that teams that no one could have ever expected to win, such as Cosumar and Rarungan taking advantage of the out-of-form team. Perhaps they were too tired of winning? With two straight titles in a row (WHS, Olympics) can they finally complete the trifecta by squeezing out of the group stage alive? Time will tell, but after those two shocking losses, there is no more room for excuses.

Electrum hangs in the balance and a further loss to either Western European Republic and Lunar Republic Islands would spell trouble for them, because Araucia could just as easily catch up to Electrum and overtake them for the second place in the group. Cosumar faces Rarungan next, and we hope to Margaret that Cosumar loses so that Electrum can regain that coveted spot in the top eight teams at the conclusion of the final round. Electrum Basketball is very tense at the moment, will they be able to rebound and win again?

No news about the Match Integrity Unit meddling into these affairs again, but they are watching closely to see if the team loses unexpectedly yet again. As favourites of the competition, Electrum should live up to those expectations and do their country proud, instead of languishing close to the elimination zone. Of course, the team is known for their group stage performances (with shock losses in IBC14 and the WHS2) and bringing it on in the finals, but it's time the team get out of that mentality and start to play their best basketball always.

The Final Day

It's been a long tournament for the team so far, having three soul crushing losses which sees them tie up with Araucia in terms of points. It's going to be a race to the finish with Electrum needing to win this next game against the Lunar Republic Islands to secure a spot in the final 16. After that, the team have a rest day before continuing on the road to the Championships. But -- it's not going to be easy. If Cosumar wins their next match as well, this means that Electrum will have to face a group winner of another group.

Electrum looks set to be in the top half of seeding for the runners up, meaning that they will most likely miss out on facing heavyweights Saintland or Ko-oren in the round of 16. After that -- it's fair game. With an endless number of variables and possibilities, we try and see who will advance from each group. There are already teams which have definitely qualified, including: Cosumar, Saintland, Chiata, Mizuyuki, Jachaelter, Ko-oren, Estope, Jeckland and Nova Anglicana.

With another 7 spots up for grabs today, will Electrum be able to secure one? It's nervous times for Coach Jefferson who is under pressure after winning two consecutive basketball competitions in a row. Is a third one within reach? Or will the team crumble under the pressure (because of a lack of maturity) and fail to qualify? Either way, we're hoping that things go our way, and that it doesn't take a miracle for the team to advance. They cannot give up any more points or position, lest they want to get an unfavourable draw straight off the bat in the finals.

Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead

What a hell of a team effort. Somehow, in what has to be one of the greats comebacks of all time, the Erathi national basketball team has advanced to the Round of 16 in the 15th International Basketball Championships. A heart breaking loss to The Fair Republic on match day 8 left La Furia Azule with 9 points total, six points behind the second placed Abanhfleft. And there were only six points left to play for. Things weren't exactly looking bright. And then the team clicked like we all knew they could.

With our backs against the wall, with elimination on the line, the Erathi team responded in magnificent fashion against the aforementioned second place Abanhfleft. Everyone was nervous. We were scared. We expected to be sent home. We should have been sent home. A loss against Abanhfleft would have made it impossible for us to qualify. But the young Erathi team thrived under the pressure.

It was a blowout. A good old fashion blowout. 89-62. Blake D'Aquino exploded with a wildly impressive 20/13/7 statline as he lead the team to victory. The Erathi team looked great. No, they looked exceptional. An 11-0 run to start the game set the tone for the rest of the match, and the Boys in Blue never let go of the lead. It was truly beautiful to watch. Basket after basket fell for us. The team were smiling. The fans were ecstatic.

The fixes we proposed several articles ago finally came into play. Andrew Abreu had 12 points and 19 rebounds in his best game of the tournament, and Stanley Aíro was efficient as always, scoring 29 points. Blake D'Aquino finally hit the impressive pace we know he can play at. All in all, it was a wonderful night. Everything went perfect.

After the final whistle to signal the end of the game, we felt ecstatic. We were slightly closer to qualifying. Not much closer, but closer all the same. We actually had a chance. A very small chance. But a chance none the less. And we Erathi like to take advantage of our opportunities.

And so we went into the final game, match day 10, against Gregoryisgodistan, in a must win game. Abanhfleft, playing #3 Saintland, had to lose. Basically, everything had to go right for us to even entertain the thought of progression into the Round of 16. And oh captain my captain.

Stanley Aíro dragged us into the Round of 16. He was the sole reason why we won. 43 points against Gregoryisgodistan. 10 assists and 15 rebounds. A tournament saving performance. A career defining triple double. What a night. Everyone played well but Aíro was just outstanding. He was on a completely different level compared to everyone else. Layups, 6/7 from the 3, several highlight reel dunks and a jaw dropping reverse-oop from D'Aquino. It truly was an inspiring performance. And yet we're going to need even more if we're going to advance into the quarterfinals where we meet our old foes.

Saintland. The one thing that stands between us and the quarterfinals. We've played them twice and we've lost twice. Despite that, there was massive improvement in those two games. The first game, our first ever on the international stage, was a 95-60 loss. The next match, a heartbreaking 77-76 loss that came after a last second buzzerbeater. And we've only gotten better since then.

Honestly, things could go either way right now. We believe we can advance but we also recognize that…well……it's Saintland. But we think we can beat them. I think it. I believe it. If the team plays to their best, if everyone goes smoothly, then we can do it. Regardless, it's been a fun ride. We entered the tournament unranked, with nobody believing in us. And here were are playing against the third-best team in the entirety of the world in the Round of 16. Whether or not we beat Saintland, whether or not we advance to the Quarterfinals or fall in the Round of 16, we've made a name for ourselves. We've played with heart and intensity. Now let's keep it up. Let's improve. Let's play better then we've ever played again.

We go again.

Bandwagon Make Round of 16 as Co-Hosts and Favourites Electrum Crash Out.
The streets of Dublin were full of partying B'Ball fans after Bandwagon made the Round of 16 in the IBC 15. "It's amazing" said guard Gaj Moskowicz as he broke down in to tears. "It's been my dream since I was a kid." A national holiday has been declared for the match on the 1st October. They will come up against Chiata, a team who they have played twice so far and lost both matches. "It will take courage" wrote former Basketball Star Patrick Horan.

National Basketball Team Dominates Group Stage

(SP) While the story of this edition of the IBC thus far has, undoubtedly, been the shocking failure of Electrum to advance out of the group stage, the other major story of the group stage involved the Saintland National Basketball Team. While they did drop a game against Gregoryisgodistan, largely because Prince Ioannes did not participate in that game, the Sanctii absolutely dominated their group this time around and are considered the overwhelming favorite to coast to a repeat IBC title, barring injury to Prince Ioannes. "While I'm disappointed that we didn't go undefeated in the group stage, we are still the number 1 seed for the playoffs. Our first opponent in those playoffs is Erathore, whom we have already beaten twice. Yes, it was close last time, but we had an off-night and actually allowed their small forward to score 39 points against us. That won't happen again." - Prince Ioannes

Of the 6 teams in Group B, the Saintland National Team was the only one that finished with a positive point differential. That was despite the Gregoryisgodistani team being absolutely abysmal, finishing with a negative 110 differential, most of it put up against teams other than the Saintland National Team. For the record, this proves, as if it needed to be proved, that Gregory the Genocidal Madman is most definitely not God. If he was, surely his "Tall Slaves" wouldn't have utterly embarrassed themselves in this edition of the IBC. Erathore, who finished second in the group and, by default, made the playoffs, will be the only playoff team that has allowed more points than they have scored in the group stage.

The lack of serious competition for our National Basketball Team, due to the bizarre disappearance of Cassadaigua and the Andromeda Islands and the shocking collapse of Electrum, has led to a decline in viewer interest in the IBC in our Kingdom. While the National Soccer Team's rout of Eastfield Lodge in the Copa Rushmori was drawing record ratings for a non-WCC soccer match, the National Basketball Team's rout of Abanhfleft hardly drew any viewers, despite airing on Royal Two. Nonetheless, the Royal Networks will continue to broadcast the best of the IBC Playoffs. Just don't expect anything exciting to happen now that the only credible rival to our National Basketball Team has been eliminated.

Special Edition: IBC Playoffs Preview
BY MONUS TEAGUE

Kale Island, ELECTRUM - Fans who travelled to Margaret Basketball Ritual Arena to watch the final day of Group A action certainly got their money's worth. They saw leaders Cosumar and Electrum get humbled by the bottom two teams in the group, with the latter's loss to 1-8 Lunar Republic Islands costing them a spot in the next round! That's right, the second-highest ranked team in this IBC, the hosts themselves, have been left in the rearview mirror as Cosumar and Auracia advance to the playoffs in their stead. As all the other groups around Electrum and in Mizuyuki conclude their final games, the playoff picture has begun to materialize. Here's a quick run-down of each Round of 16 match-up and our best guess as to who will advance.

[1] Saintland vs. [16] Erathore

With Electrum out of the way, the Sanctii have become the undisputed favorites to take home the gold. This highly efficient offense features versatile forward Lucas Cornificius and fearsome center Prince Ionnes, and is orchestrated flawlessly by brothers Paulus and Alessandro Delluius at the guard position. Saintland has size, athleticism and experience. The defending champions were not challenged in group play, coasting to a 9-1 record. Two of those wins came at the expense of Erathore, against whom they will attempt a third victory in the first round. Erathore did well to recover from their 3-5 start to make the playoffs, but their miracle run ends here. They may have stymied Saintland a bit in match day 6 (the Sanctii won on a last-second buzzer beater), but it's the playoffs now and Prince Ionnes and company are sure to be completely dialed-in this time around. Their eyes are on the prize and they won't let Stanley Aíro or anyone else get in their way.
Prediction: Saintland advances, 84-71

[2] Ko-oren vs. [15] Equestrian States

Ko-oren games aren't any fun to watch, but that just means they're executing their game-plan well. The #6-ranked defensive stalwarts matched Saintland's pace, rolling to a 9-1 record in Group G despite some strong teams like Estope and Darmen. Ko-oren are a young team and had a few games that were closer than they should've been, but in the end, they've found a way to take care of business each game and improve over the course of the tournament. Equestrian States, in contrast, has failed to live up to experts' expectations. Despite being drawn into a group with only one other ranked foe (Britonisea, 52 spots below them), the Ponies struggled to a 5-5 record, having to win their last two games and a three-way tiebreaker just to sneak into the Round of 16 behind unranked hosts Mizuyuki. Nevertheless, it is a dangerous draw for Ko-oren. Though Byrd's group has not lived up to its potential, they certainly have the potential to make some noise if they get hot. As winners of their last two, Equestrian States seems to (finally) be coming on at the right time. I'll put my credibility on the line and call the upset (there's always one, right?).
Prediction: Equestrian States advances, 73-68

[3] Chiata vs. [14] Bandwagon

Bandwagon, the likable underdogs with some of the most passionate fans you'll ever encounter, are riding a four game win-streak and a surge of momentum. The Shamrocks have certainly established a keen ability to punch above their weight, recording impressive victories over Filopines and Darvale and blowing out their unranked peers. Despite bursting onto the international scene in this IBC, I haven't seen anything to indicate that the scrappy underdogs have what it takes to defeat the winners of their group, Chiata. In their previous two meetings, Chiata won by a combined 47 points. Give a lot of credit to Adriano Bentley for what his team has been able to accomplish, but they just don't match up well against a relentless and very skilled Chiata Stingers squad.
Prediction: Chiata advances, 79-77

[4] Jeckland vs. [13] The Royal Barangay

I'm not completely sold on either of these teams, but I think Jeckland wins by default. The Royal Barangay barely advanced out of what might've been the weakest group in the IBC and have little about them that stands out from the crowd. The Jecks, meanwhile, produced a solid 8-2 record in a Group that contained #7 Vettrera, #15 Nova Anglicana, and some of the better unranked teams (Felix, Vintrovter). Jeckland lacks a bona-fide superstar, but they have proved their mettle and should be a tough out for anyone. Look for Mick Gallows and company to make quick work of TRB, though I doubt they'll advance any further than the quarterfinals.
Prediction: Jeckland advances, 90-77

[5] Jachaelter vs. [12] United Eastedge

Now, this is an interesting machup. The infamous 5/12 pairing, known for being one of the most likely upsets. Jachaelter won a weak Group F, though an 8-2 record is an impressive record regardless of who you're playing, behind the strength of 7"10 monster Lance Daff. Yes, Jachaelter has a virtual eight-footer clogging up the lane. That said, Daff is 38 years old and has lost quite a bit of agility - and he was never the most coordinated bloke to begin with. Aside from Daff, the rest of Jachaelter's starting line-up in woefully undersized, with only one other player above 6"0. United Eastedge, who finished 7-3 in Group D, are a much more well-rounded team. Eddie Perkins is a great coach and I think he will be able to cook up a strategy to overcome Daff and exploit Jachaelter's lack of balance. With guys like Phillip Perez and Ray Hudson, he certainly has the weapons to do so. I consider United Eastedge one of the dark horses in this tournament - they could surprise some people (starting with the #5s) and go far.
Prediction: United Eastedge advances, 83-73

[6] Paymina vs. [11] Auracia

This is a Round of 16 matchup no one saw coming before group play began. It features two unranked nations, neither with any international sporting pedigree to speak of. Well, these two unranked teams took advantage of the vacuum left behind by the absence of Cassadaigua and The Andromeda Islands to make a name for themselves. I'm especially familiar with Auracia, having watched my Cosumar Dragons go up against them twice. The Condors are a tad small, but have one of the quickest backcourts in the world. Quidel Lavanchy and Gaston Dumas are an excellent guard duo. Both of them can slice into the paint and score at will or dish it back out to a shooter in the corner. These Auracians often rely on their perimeter shot to keep defenses honest. When their shot is falling, they can be difficult to slow down...but can sink into a rut when their having a bad day behind the arc. As such, they are a kind of one-dimensional team, but still capable of beating anybody on any given night (as Cosumar and Electrum both learned first-hand). Paymina is seeded higher, but I don't consider them the favorites here. The two teams do, after all, have the same 7-3 record, but Auracia accomplished it in one of the most difficult groups.
Prediction: Auracia advances, 71-64

[7] Mizuyuki vs. [10] Nova Anglicana

If you watch one IBC game this week (besides Cosumar's of course), pick this one. It has 'nail-biter' written all over it. Two young and closely-matched up and coming teams trying to establish their place among the world's elite, with emerging stars on the court and a rabid Mizuyuki home crowd in the bleachers. Mizuyuki (7-3) is billed as the higher seed since they won a group, but Nova Anglicana (8-2) actually had the better record of the two. The 10-seed winning would normally be a bit of a surprise, but not here. I'd say it's just about 50/50. The collegiate all-stars of Nova Anglicana are led by burly senior center Taylor Moss and the CP3-like Brett Newkirk. The Mizuyuki-jins are led by versatile forward Koizumi Yumi and 19-year-old four-man Ezaka Banri. Nova Anglicana has a distinct size advantage that could cause problems for Mizuyuki, but the hosts are a deep and well-rounded team with a young mastermind of a coach in Shirahata Tadayuki. I give the Lions the edge in this premiere contest, but not by a lot. I feel they just have a little more offensive firepower, which in addition to their size advantage in the post, should power them through.
Prediction: Nova Anglicana advances, 83-82

[8] Cosumar vs. [9] Estope

Baketball experts universally expected Cosumar to make the Round of 16, but with Electrum in the group, it was supposed to be as runners-up. That's not quite how things turned out. Electrum's inability to consistently put away inferior teams came back to bite them, and it nearly did the same to the Dragons. We still won the group, but in the last few games we've had bad losses to Auracia and Western European Republic...inexcusable losses. We're certainly pleased to be in the playoffs, but fans have to be a little anxious considering the streaky up-and-down nature of our performances. In the first round, Cosumar will face the best of all the 2nd-place teams, #39 Estope. They actually had a better record than us with eight wins and finished the group phase strong with wins over Darmen and Daritii. Nevertheless, I have to go with my Dragons to advance to the quarterfinals. This is the most complete unit we've had in years and I think Coach Dupree will find away to bring it all together and deliver a cohesive team performance. Jakk Klyde has played in a lot of IBCs, and I think he's finally determined to taste the glory of a deep run in the tournament.
Prediction: Cosumar advances, 78-69

"Replacements" Make Playoffs, Will Face Hosts

While the Nova Anglicana Lions senior team were off earning a bronze medal at the IX Olympics in the Kytler Peninsulae, the Nova Anglican Collegiate All-Stars, first mockingly and then fondly known as the "Replacements", were fighting their way to a playoff spot in the last 16. Between a day 1 shocker against Vinrotver and a Day 9 spanking from Jeckland, the "Replacements" went 7-0, including pulling off a thrilling overtime victory against that same Jeckland team. They crushed Felix 83-56 on the final day, securing an 8-2 record and only falling behind Jeckland in their group on H2H points and #9 seed Estope on point differential (a measly 2). The "Replacements" will be seeded 10th of 16 teams and will face 7th-seeded Mizuyuki, one of the hosts of the tournament.

Faithful Lions fans will remember the 2nd World Hoops Showcase, when the Lions were drawn against Electrum, also the hosts of that tournament. The same duo are co-hosting these 15th IBCs, and now a Nova Anglican team gets to face the other co-host, just to even things out. Of course, there will be thousands upon thousands of Mizuyuki-jin cheering for their favorite team, while none but the affluent and the sportswriters traveled to Mizuyuki to follow the "Replacements". It will be an uphill battle for sure, but don't rule the Lions out just yet.

For one, the starting lineup of the "River Flag Country" averages merely 6'1 in height and power forward Ezeka Banri is the team's tallest player at 6'6, while the "Replacements" average between 6'5 and 6'6 across their front line. Furthermore, Mizuyuki lost two of their final three games. They looked lackluster in 62-57 and 94-80 losses, and barely escaped a mediocre Britonisea team 75-73. Nonetheless, they will definitely be up for this game in their trademark 3-2 zone. Mizuyuki is not a team that beats itself, so the "Replacements" will have to use their height advantage to pound the ball inside and draw the defense, opening up an opportunity for Fabian Theriaux to bomb corner 3s; Damion Locklear's historically dreadful outside shooting percentage is halfway decent from the corners. Josiah Boland, the prolific shooter, might see more time than usual if Mizuyuki's zone proves particularly porous.

As for a prediction, this one should be a barn-burner. Media from Cosumar are calling it a "nail-biter" and saying, "If you watch one IBC game this week... pick this one." We're inclined to agree. The speed, quickness and gimmicky zone of the Mizuyuki-jin against the height, strength, and traditional UCLA high post offense of the "Replacements" should make for a great game. We'll go for broke and pick Nova Anglicana over the home team. The winner will face the winner of Ko-oren-Equestrian States. The Ko-orenites have looked dominant after getting whupped by Daritii on MD1, winning their remaining nine games, including an astounding 126-61 victory over Darmen. Equestrian States, by contrast, has looked supremely uninterested, just now releasing a roster and bobbing their way to a 5-5 record. Ko-oren will throttle the ponies, and probably whoever advances in the 7-10 matchup. Let's just hope it's us.

Erathore Shocks Saintland; Unranked Erathore beats #3 Saintland in Thrilling Overtime Encounter

It might have only been game one of a three game tournament, but what a huge, huge victory for the young Erathi team, who are only playing in their first ever international tournament. Saintland. The third best team in the world. Erathore. Unranked. A nobody (at least in the basketball world). Two previous meetings that had finished 95-60 and 77-76. Progress had been made by the team in both of those two games. Huge progress. And so the stage was set for a very exciting game for both the fans of the two teams and for neutrals. All the ingredients for a highly entertaining match were present.

Centralis University Basketball Stadium, Centralis. The lights went out and the players turned on. Right from the beginning it was made clear that this was going to be a tightly contested affair. Back and forth, back and forth. We would score, and they would answer immediately. They would start to pull away, we would catch right back up. We would grab a 4 or 5 point lead and then they would go on a scoring run and and tie it all back up. Back and forth the game went.

70-70. Five seconds left on the clock. Saintland, the third best team in the world, with possession against unranked Erathore. In a departure from their usual play style, which revolves around feeding the ball to the center and having him shoulder the brunt of the offensive load, the Saints chose to play the final seconds with the ball in Paulus Delluius' hands. The 6'4 guard drove down the court and got Blake D'Aquino caught on a screen set by Lucas Cornificius and blasted into the paint against Emem Masamba. A very well executed Eurostep sent Masamba the wrong way and left Delluius with an easy layup. And then came D'Aquino with one of the highest jumps I have ever seen. D'Aquino got up and put his head just under the rim before emphatically swatting Delluius' layup out of the sky. Overtime.

Even in overtime, it was a tight game. For five minutes, things went back and forth. A quick bucket and then a minute later, the other team would equalize. It was squeaky bum time. And all of sudden, we were down by two points with 14 seconds left on the clock. The ball was inbounded and we were all holding our breath. Blake D'Aquino was taking the ball up-court. The ball smacked against the floor as he slowly trotted past half-court. Ten seconds. He called a play and everyone got into possession. Seven seconds. A high screen from Andrew Abreu got D'Aquino free. Four seconds. He ran right along the three point line before driving towards the basket. Two seconds. With the hopes of the team on him, Blake D'Aquino was up to the challenge. Whereas everyone, including his marker Paulus Delluius thought he was going to drive to the hoop, D'Aquino had other plans. A smooth stepback behind the three-point line before quickly shooting the ball. The horn sounded. The net swished. 3 points. 78-77. Victory.

A 1-0 series lead. We have to win the next game. We can do it. We have to. We believe.

Prince Ioannes Injured in Loss to Erathore, May Miss Game 2

(SP) The Saintland National Basketball Team was upset last night by Erathore. Even more shocking was the injury to Prince Ioannes, which was suffered late in the second quarter of the game. Toward the end of the first half, Prince Ioannes laid down one of his signature dunks. Nothing seemed wrong at the time, but he had hit his right hand against the rim. "I am doing everything in my power to ensure that I am able to play in the next game of this series against Erathore. They have proven to be a much more difficult opponent than I had anticipated. However, if I am unable to go, I am confident in the ability of my teammates to rise to the occasion and keep us alive in this tournament." - Prince Ioannes

Following the injury, Prince Ioannes was noticeably off his game. During the second half, he missed several shots that he would normally make. With the team captain rendered ineffective, the National Team relied upon the Delluius brothers to carry them. In the final seconds of regulation, Paulus Delluius's game-winner was blocked by Blake D'Aquino, setting up overtime. Erathore went on to win in overtime by a 1 point margin.

Earlier in the tournament, Prince Ioannes chose to sit out a game against Gregoryisgodistan. This turned into a debacle, with the hapless "Tall Slaves," one of the worst teams to compete in this edition of the IBC, pulling off the upset. Based on their past record without the captain, this situation seriously complicates the title hopes of the Saintland National Team and even puts into jeopardy whether they will advance past the Round of 16.

The Saintland National Basketball Team has never failed to make at least the Quarterfinals of any tournament that they have ever competed in. In fact, they have only lost series, in the past, to Casssadaigua, Qazox and the Andromeda Islands. All 3 of those nations are among the all-time giants of international basketball. Yet, in spite of history and in spite of their top-seed status in this edition of the IBC, something hasn't seemed right this time around. Upsets have certainly become more commonplace in recent editions of the IBC. The story of Electrum is illustrative. Electrum stunned the basketball world by making it to the finals of the last edition of the IBC and actually taking the Saintland National Team, which had been dominant up to that point, to the full 5 games. Yet, as fast as Electrum rose through the ranks, they fell right back down. In an era where the former powers of the IBC have all disappeared, maybe it isn't all that surprising that Erathore, the only playoff team that allowed more points than they scored during the group stage, seems to be on the verge of knocking out the defending champions and odds-on favorite to win this tournament. The days when a handful of teams dominated the basketball court and nobody else stood a realistic chance of beating them now seem to be an eternity ago...

Chiata Times

Game Three On Its Way

In an exciting game, the Chiata Stingers were able to edge off the Bandwagon Shamrocks in game two of the round of 16 series. With a score of 76-70, Chiata forced a game three onto the underdogs of Bandwagon. Now, a few striking similarities have been pointed out between this year's campaign and last years. Bandwagon, unranked, has made it to the Round of 16, granted without a round of 24, and is pitted against a high ranking foe. Last year, that was Chiata vs. Super Llamaland, in the Round of 16. Bandwagon wins game won, as does Chiata in the CHI-SLL game. Next, the higher ranking team wins, Chiata now, Super Llamaland in IBC 14. The series goes to a game three. Creeped out yet? In IBC 14, Chiata would win the game and advance to the Quarter Finals. Hopefully this time around, the more experienced team will win. When interviewed, Coach Johnson gave this memorable quote, "We beat 'em before, we beat 'em now, we beat 'em tomorrow," and "Three seeds just don't lose to fourteen seeds." Of course, the same thing happened with the Philopines games. Chiata beats them four games straight, then loses when Chiata is ranked higher. Chiata beats Bandwagon both legs in qualifying then drops the first series game. Clearly, to succeed, the Stingers will have to be more consistent. If they are able to do that, we believe they can win the game against Bandwagon and advance to the Quarter Finals. Coupled onto the burdens of the team, the continuous absence of Thomas Lint will still be a handicup. And of course, Lint was injured in a game verses Bandwagon... on a foul. Of course, we don't want to pull the pity card... but... #WinForLint!
