About Electrum
Electrum is a medium-sized sporting nation of approximately eighty million citizens in the region of Rushmore. It is a country bordered by Eura to the North and Rhodesiah to the West. Electrum is a highly developed country specializing in technology, commerce and culture. Its capital city is Centralis. Other major centres which will host venues will be Prescott, Hamilton, Port Grenville, Agri and Kale Island. Although Australian Rules is the favourite code in Electrum, Rugby Union has been gaining considerable support around the nation.

A nation where bars and gambling are common place, this nation is sports mad. To ensure the integrity of future tournaments held in Electrum, two statutory bodies have been set up, the Doping Testing Authority, which oversees the testing for elicit performance enhancing drugs and the Match Integrity Unit, a body which monitors illegal betting, strange patterns in betting and match fixing allegations.

Format
Eight groups of seven nations, single round robin. Top three of each group advances to the Round of 24. Reseeding will happen before the start of the finals. Group winners will skip the Round of 24 and advance directly to the Round of 16. Runners up and third placers will face each other for a spot in the R16 (fixtures based on seeding). Tiebreakers are HTH record, Points Difference, Points For and a Playoff Match.

Role Play and Scorination
A roster will be worth a day of role playing. Roleplays will be marked from 0-1 on a fluid scale with quality > quantity. Though don't expect to get a huge bonus if you only write a terrific sentence for your RP. All matches are held in Electrum, and should Electrum make the finals, then a third party scorinator will be called to scorinate. The first cutoff will be 30th August, 6PM Melbourne Time. Each cutoff will be at 6PM except for Tuesdays where it will be at 9PM. Max skill is 1+Nation with highest skill.

Note: Bonus points will be recorded in a separate column, and are counted separately from actual points from winning/a draw to prevent confusion, though they both count as pool points. As always, less than 7 points nets a bonus point as well as scoring more than 32 points in a single match (four tries=1 point rule, as stated in bid thread).

30th August: Matchday 1
31st August: Matchday 2
1st September: Matchday 3

General Information
For general information about Electrum, visit this page.
Meanwhile, Centralis has it's own page as well on iiwiki (where teams will play twice).

All nations competing in the Rugby World Cup will rotate around every city in Electrum. These are: Centralis, Hamilton, Agri, Port Grenville, Kale Island, Prescott and Burnton.

The currency is the Synergy, a card based currency which is entirely digitalised. For those seeking to use the normal paper money, Universal Standard Dollars could be used instead, but it is recommended to get these cards which is very easily stolen but also very convenient to use.

Customs and Laws
In general, the laws of Electrum are generally relaxed, with restrictions on the most serious of crimes as well as bans on smoking in certain areas and banning of 'hard' drugs only. Electrum is also an anti-gun nation so all guns will need to be given up at the border -- lest they face criminal imprisonment in Electrum.

Nations will be flown over on special AirElectrum planes through to Centralis International Airport. There are lots of restrictions in what can and can't be brought to Electrum, as well as schedules and restrictions.

Kale Island is based in a semi-autonomous territory where locals tend to be mysterious. As a result of the government wanting to hold onto territory but not interfering with the islanders, this territory has their own strange and unique rules unique to that island (you can RP any crazy rules you like).

Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided free of charge in all of the venues, with buses and high security staff following the team every bit of the way. All of the facilities are new and are in close proximity to the venues themselves (often just a short bus ride). The hotel staff will be on call 24 hours a day to cater to whatever your team wants.

Transportation between venues
Teams will be shuttled between venues with AirElectrum planes once again. Meanwhile, to visit Kale Island, nations must fly to Port Grenville where there is an hourly boat to Kale Island. We hear that wild boars run amok on the boat, so watch out, but on the most part teams will fly comfortably on a luxury airplane.

Location Schedule
Burnton>Centralis>Prescott>Hamilton>Agri>Kale Island>Port Grenville

Group A and B start at Burnton, C and D at Prescott, E and F at Agri and G and H at Port Grenville on Matchday 1. On the next matchday, they are moved onto the next city in the chain. So, Group A and B will be playing at Centralis on Matchday 2.

Venues
Located 35km to the west of Centralis, it is a satellite town which is not officially part of Centralis itself. It is the stronghold of Rugby Union in all of Electrum, and as such has been chosen as one of the venue cities, even though it is not a capital city. A quiet seaside city, it is known for it's "bogans," the local term for hooligans/people of a lower class. Nonetheless, these people are good at their sport. Burnton is also known for being the city that has won the last two Australian Football competitions in Electrum. The Bulldogs Stadium, known as the kennel has been converted from an Australian Rules field to a rugby union field for the duration of this tournament. The smaller stadium usually held for union is currently in redevelopment and expansion.

Stadium: Bulldogs Stadium, Capacity: 55,000
Image

Centralis is at the heart of the nation and is known throughout Electrum for its cosmopolitan and multicultural scene. The people there are kind to all and are always willing to have a chat and talk sports. Located in the middle of Electrum, it was chosen to be the capital city of both the entire nation as well as the province of Greater Centralis. Centralis Stadium will be hosting the tournament in Centralis with its unique roof structure being an eye opener.

Stadium: Centralis Arena, Capacity: 40,000
Image

Prescottians are known more for their partying and drinking. Prescott is situated to the immediate west of Electrum and is fairly cool, given it's high altitude. Temperatures can go below freezing point at times, so make sure you stay rugged up! Prescott is in the Frontier Mountain Range and is a few dozen kilometers near Electrum's highest point, Mt. Picana where mountaineers are free to explore up the mountain. Bars in Prescott are open 24 hours a day, and you can be sure that there will be a pub on every corner.

Stadium: Northcote Oval, Capacity: 25,000
Image

Hamilton is situated to the north of Centralis and is situated on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. Hamilton has a very hot climate, with temperatures rising to 35 degrees daily. Be sure to bring sunscreen here as the sun is very harsh. Hamilton is a mining hub where there are a lot of mining operations (for uranium, gold and silver), where the miners are very wealthy. This has allowed them to splash out on a big arena.

Stadium: Hamilton Multi-Purpose Venue, Capacity: 45,000
Image

Agri is situated in a rainy and wet area in the northern parts of Electrum. It is also on a delta as well and therefore very susceptible to flooding. Agrians are known for their passionate support for sports, albeit sometimes taking it a bit too far. Supporters in Agri often light flares indoors and will attempt to disrupt the match, and the opposing team as much as possible. Even when their home side isn't playing, you can expect to see the audience pick sides and boo a team they don't like at will.

Stadium: Deltan University Field, Capacity: 10,000
Image

Kale Island is one of the last remaining islands in the possession of Electrum. After the exodus of the Coconut Isles, Kale remains under the authority of Electrum. This is the only province or territory where Margaret is the majority religion. As a consequence, rubber chickens are in high demand here, and upsets are known to happen here fairly frequently. Kale Islanders are known for their superstition and belief in Margaret to provide them the best scores for their sporting clubs. Do not attempt to convert them to another religion, or you may find yourself in a boiling cauldron, being prepared as another sacrifice for the mighty Margaret. As a result of their general kookiness, they have been denied provincial status, and are instead given autonomous rule -- so that they stay under the influence of Electrum with not too much meddling. Built a few years ago, the grounds of this stadium are on an ancient burial ground, so watch out for any ghosts or spirits that may appear!

Stadium: Kale Memorial Park, Capacity: 7,500
Image

Port Grenville is a seaside city to the southwest of Centralis on the Bellar Peninsula. It is slightly more cooler with rains more common here than anywhere else in the country. The citizens here are made up of sailors and fishermen, so do not be surprised to see them swear all the time. Aside from being potty mouths, they love a good swig of alcohol every few hours as well, so you can be sure to find lots of 'drinking holes' (taverns) here.

Stadium: Knights Stadium, Capacity: 20,000

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. Rugby is the 3rd most popular form of football in Saintland. It is nowhere near as popular as soccer or gridiron. It also is not as popular as baseball, ice hockey or basketball. Rugby is roughly as popular as handball in Saintland. A RL comparison would be soccer in the US. The Saintland rugby team doesn't have the high expectations that come with representing Saintland in any of the big 5 sports. Actually, the team is somewhat infamous for being mostly ignored at home, regardless of how they perform. The Saintland National Rugby Union Team has 5 brother combinations in the starting lineup. This team lacks a star player. Unlike the usual Sanctii captains, Desidenius is not a star player. He is a veteran who captains the St. Petrus rugby union team. Desidenius is known for his veteran leadership, but he is just a good player. Even Lucas Portius, the MVP last season, is not a superstar player. If the Sanctii perform well, it will be through team play, not through the dominance of any single player. They are relatively tall players and most of them have played gridiron at the youth levels.

Some Village Sports Federation

proudly presents the

VILLAGERS NATIONAL RUGBY TEAM

Some Village is not a nation in the usual meaning of the word. Most nations can be described by indicating their population, geography and location. At the time of this tournament, late August 464 A.D. for us, there are 254 inhabitants. All of them reside on board of the Some Village, a ship which constitutes their only territory. Said ship is usually anchored in Panoli, the major coastal town of Neu Engollon or drifts on the shores of Astyria, the region where we can be found. In exceptional cases, we leave this region for sports tournaments or in order to find the Islas Fortunas, the destined land indicated in the writings of Malachi, the prophet which teachings we follow.
In 36 B.C., a small group of insurgents left the land of Judea in order to find territory to live in peace and happiness. So far, they haven’t found it, despite numerous attempts. For those interested in more about our history and nation, I’m glad to point you towards our factbook.
So far I would only add that our elected king is named Gera, our ship is navigated by Rabah, our council head and village eldest is Sem, our national doctor is Evei and our responsible for entertainment and president of the Sports Federation is named Erastos.

SPUDS GEAR UP FOR RUGBY KICK OFF

Jeckland's national rugby team is preparing for the imminent Rugby Union World Cup 22 in Electrum. This is the second time Jeckland has competed in the competition, having narrowly failed to advance past the group stage last time. The draw has been made for this competition, with Jeckland placed in Group F.

Group F
Polar Islandstates (6)
Huantija (10)
Jeckland (40)
The Serbian Empire (82)
Darvale (UR)
Vinrotver (UR)
New Gillingham (UR)

Polar Islandstates and Hutanja are the most dangerous looking teams in this group, with both having a rich and successful history in both codes of rugby. The top seeds are the stronger looking of the two. Third seeded is Jeckland, who are quietly confident about a good run in this tournament. The Serbian Empire are a very low ranked side, but could cause a few problems. Then, as in most international sport, there is the lottery of the unranked teams. The three gracing our group are Darvale, Vintrotver, and New Gillingham. Of those, our sources reckon that Darvale is the only one which could cause a few upsets. To conclude, it won't be easy, but the Spuds would be disappointed not to qualify from this group. The first match is against Vintrotver, a game the Spuds will be looking to win to kickstart their campaign in the right fashion. You can watch the full game live on Jeckland Sports 1.
Winners: N/A
Runners Up: WBC 30 & 31, Memorial Cup
Semi Final: CE 26, WBC 35, WLC 20

Head Coach: Peter Teripane, 56
Peter Teripane, the head coach of the Mapletish Rubgy Union National Team since their participation in the URA Rugby Union Championships XXXV [URUC], where the All Reds failed to beat their closest rivals, the All Blacks to the URUC title however Teripane has guided the Lions to two URUC tournament victories and a gold medal in the Uralympics XLV. After an enriching experience in the Rugby Union World Cup two editions ago, Teripane is now set to bring his squad back into the tournament to give them another challenge to the more matured squad now.

Assistant Coach: Daniel Frederik, 42
Daniel Frederik, the assistant coach of the Mapletish Rugby Union National Team since Victor Cornélio's management, before Peter Teripane stepped into the Mapletish rugby union scene. Under the guidance of Cornélio, the All Reds won the URUC title three times in a row and dominated the rugby union scene in the URA before the All Blacks came out top in the XXXV URUC. Despite having a lot of interest from different clubs around Mapletish around the region, Frederik has decided to stay put with the national team to develop young Maplish players.

The Buio'Dzz
Before every match, the team members (including the designated substitutes for the match) will perform a traditional ritual, called the Buio'Dzz on the pitch just before play begins. This is one of the many tribe war dance from the aboriginals of Mapletish, meant to awe their opponents, this is similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' haka before their matches. This would be performed unless the hosts of the match in question object to the ritual.

Of late, league has surged over union in Nephara, spurred on by a successful hosting of the other code's World Cup - to the extent where the Nepharim Rugby League has finally been professionalised. Union officials are praying for something big to swing momentum back in its favour. Pressure on manager Rudolf Metzger from above has prevented him from calling up any professional rugby (league) players to come cross-code - as a result, this team is of semi-professionals, though some could certainly make the step up, and all would be looking for a move abroad if possible.

Brenecia is not, by any means, a powerhouse in rugby - while they have to an extent benefited from the professionalisation of the Nepharim league, the fact that their finest three players hail from a newly-blossomed league in the wrong code is more or less as faint praise as it comes. All Brenecian union teams are semi-professional, and have a strange tendency to be named after abstract concepts.

Brenecia will largely attempt to defend as best they can using their physicality; the one edge they have on most teams.

Lions to Make Second Appearance at RUWC, Hope to Improve

Harland Howerton, Londinium Courier

When the Nova Anglicana Lions arrived at the 21st Rugby Union World Cup, their chances of winning or even advancing out of the group stage were decidedly slim. After all, a team with four victories in over twenty test matches could not have been considered much of a threat. When they defeated #18 Estope and co-hosts Some Village in close matches, many dismissed this as beginner's luck. After all, they were up against Rhodesiah next, the world #1 who would give the Lions a spanking and send them crying home to their mothers. When they upset Rhodesiah 35-17, people sat up and took notice, but the slippery pitch and perceived overconfidence of the Sables were mitigating factors. When all was said and done, the Lions finished with a record of 6-1-2 and fourth place overall in the tournament, including a win over then #24 Apox in the quarters. The Lions ended up with three wins against ranked opponents, a very strong debut.

Now the Lions return with a shiny new #9 ranking and have to be considered one of the top teams to beat in this tournament. The road to the championship will not be easy, but the odds of the Lions advancing to the knockout rounds have to be pretty high. The Lions open with a pair of world champions, Kernansquillec and Ko-oren. Kernansquillec is currently unranked, but they won the only World Cup they entered, the 17th edition. The Lions should open with a win, but nothing is guaranteed against a world champion. Next up are the current world champions, the Greenblues of Ko-oren. They stopped the reign of Rhodesiah and should enter as the odds-on favorite to win it again (if not Rhodesiah). Looks like a loss. The Lions get 42nd-ranked Patistan next. It's a mystery to me as to how they managed to get all the way up to 42nd, as they won just one match last time and lost their first three matches by an aggregate of 132-7. This one could be a laugher.

The Lions close the second half of their schedule with three unranked opponents: Xadowia, Gregoryisgodistan, and Jachaelter. Xadowia has a thriving professional league and media attention should be at an all-time high for the national team. The Lions' experience ought to carry them through here. The key in the Gregoryisgodistan match will be getting out alive. We and the Gregoryisgodistanis generally have good relations, but rugby could provide an easy excuse for them to crush a few of our team members. Speed and precision will be at a premium here. Their final opponent is Jachaelter. This "sporting" nation has, in previous events, sent grotesquely underprepared middle schoolers to represent them, as well as illiterate journalists. I see no reason why that should stop now. If they win a single match, I'll be extremely surprised and I expect this to be the Lions' biggest win of the tournament.

A return to the semifinals would be nice for the Lions, but they'll have to really earn it, as nobody will be underestimating them this time around.

OOC: I may be home late tomorrow, so cutoff /may/ be late, but we'll see how tomorrow goes.

Media Release from the Minister for Sports, the Arts and Culture
The Hon Rosalind Corby MP

Release Embargo: 2300, 30/8/14

Minister Corby proud of Electrum's bid for the 22nd Rugby Union World Cup

It has been a fantastic day of rugby union all throughout Electrum as the 22nd Rugby Union World Cup gets underway in Electrum. Rugby Union enjoys a somewhat significant following in Electrum, and after there were no host bids for the tournament, sporting ministry officials went right away in drawing and planning up a bid for this competition. The first matches were held in Burnton, the traditional strong hold of Rugby Union, and where Group A and B will play first. Tomorrow will be the first day of play in Centralis, where the Electrum team will debut.

Once again, the Labor Government has been successful in attracting world class sporting events into Electrum. After a lengthy bidding process, Electrum was nearly unanimously voted in as the next host of the Rugby Union World Cup. The Sports Ministry, under the leadership of Minister Rosalind Corby has managed to secure world class tournaments in Rugby, Tennis and Basketball, and are now bidding to host the next International Basketball Championships as well.

This Rugby Union World Cup also brings an excellent opportunity for recreational areas and stadii to be upgraded and advanced to true world class arenas. Almost all of the stadiums in this bid have received a refurbishment and expansion to seating, with the stadii to be used as future dual-use in rugby and football (of the soccer variety) matches. With this funding, it is expected that these arenas will be used in the future for other competitions as well as domestic use for the soon to be formed domestic football competition.

In addition to that, the Electrum Rugby Association, which oversees the Union, League and Sevens teams has been given a grant by the Ministry of Sports to further progress into these competitions. It is hoped that with future participation, Electrum can rise up the ranks and inspire other Electrumite children in trying out rugby as a sport.
