LEAGUE CYCLE XII PREVIEW (Year 1000)The celebrations from Cosumar's Cup of Harmony triumphs are in the rear-view mirror, and it's time to begin preparation for another season of domestic football. The Fiefdom Soccer Federation will organize its 12th seasons this year (one millennium anniversary of the Cosumarite calendar!) and it's sure to be as entertaining as usual. The top three divisions, under the expanded framework introduced last season, will field 18 teams each. And after the success of the first edition, the nearly 200 Cosumarite clubs in the league system will compete for the second annual Cosumar Cup. Will it stay at Eastweald, or will another club claim the prize? Which gutsy lower league team will be this year's East Ellum, making a Cinderella run into the later stages of the tournament? The Harlighet Ligan is full of questions....will Real Azuris become the first club to win three consecutive championships, will sleeping giants Mallox or OAS Royal finally take back the spotlight, or will a new club win its first title? Which underdogs will win over the Fiefdom's hearts in their quest for unlikely success? Keep reading for TheCourier.cos' exclusive Season XII Preview.

REAL AZURIS
Azuris, South Klyde Fief
Nickname: Breakers Founded: 962
Ground: Massemord Stadium (42,243)
Manager: Akira Eld
Starting XI: Robert Sieuwerd (28) *** Georges Mauvonts (23), Rod Fermer (CHI - 26), Yuri Makareshi (EST - 20), Santeri Venidos (QUE - 29) *** Lukas Karlstrom (POL - 24), Raphael Martin (27), Augustine Byquist (30 - Capt) *** Delfinho (26), Santeri Moors (24), Ipier Ubuntu (28)
Preview: Real Azuris are the undisputed kings of Cosumarite football at present. From the depths of Sekundar Ligan obscurity, they have ascended over the 990s to the top of the Harlighet Ligan. This season, they will be laser-focused on becoming the first club to win three consecutive championships. And everyone else will be laser-focused on dethroning them. But this isn't the same team that won the league by ten points last season. The steady hand of Akira Eld will guide the Breakers once again, but he will be without club leader, longtime captain and Cosumar NT'er Giovanni Aldinne. The 34-year-old midfielder, after several weeks of speculation, confirmed his move to Whitetail Foresters of Equestrian States over the transfer window. His boyhood club should be
just fine without him though, as Real Azuris secured Lukas Karlstrom to replace him in left midfield. Karlstrom is one of the best players to ever come out of Polaaskan, and at age 24, is a wise investment for the future. Once he gels with Martin and Byquist, Real Azuris' midfield will be a delight to watch. Fortunately, Aldinne's departure was a mutually agreeable one, and there is no doubt he will be met with thunderous applause upon his first return to Massemord. Real Azuris also renovated their back line. They had to give up starting full back Snorri Erkins to receive Karlstrom, a steep price, and couldn't resist a $10 million offer from Northbrook for starting right back Jan Årud. Young Estenian CB Yuri Makareshi, a reserve last season, will get the first crack at Erkins' starting role. The club used the money from the Årud sale to purchase Santeri Venidos from Montreal City (QUE). With Fermer and Mauvonts returning, their back line should still be capable of championship run. Also encouraging is the improvement of Robert Sieuwerd, who has emerged as a NT-caliber keeper. With fan-favorite striker Ipier Ubuntu and the winger tandem of Delfinho and Santeri Moors returning, the Breakers should once again achieve a good goal total. They are greater than the sum of their parts due to their familiarity, compatibility and discipline. On paper, Real Azuris is very good but not great. But somehow Akira Eld finds a way to get his team to be great on the pitch when it counts, consistently defeating teams that seem more talented at first glance. I'm finally joining the Breakers' bandwagon. They win their third consecutive Harlighet Ligan title this season, matching Mallox's overall total.
Last Season: Champions (20-8-6).
Prediction: Champions.
EASTWEALD
Yambridge, Gellano Fief
Nickname: Elves Founded: 704
Ground: Old Weldenskirgen (43,209)
Manager: Henrique Ventura
Starting XI: Golden Rand (NPH - 31) *** Andrei Arsamov (EST - 23), Orion Black (TAE - 22), Abdiel Assad (33 - Capt), Willvamier Taylor (WBO - 22) *** Rugain Na'Baleur (30), Jakrikk Kaballah (NSR - 25), Jake Wiggins (SLL - 28), Mika Ostaltsov (PIS - 34) *** Franz Auman (DSF - 31), Otto Rush (19)
Preview: Eastweald had their best season in recent memory last year, finishing 2nd place and claiming the first ever Cosumar Cup. Henrique Ventura was on the hot seat after a mediocre two-year run at the helm, but turned things around beautifully in 999. Who saw that coming? This team finally seemed to buy into his philosophy, their aging veterans played like they were 25 again, and midfielder Mika Ostaltsov of Polar Islandstates had an immediate MVP-like impact. The Elves didn't score many goals, but they did just enough to win games with airtight defense, allowing a league-low 17 goals. And they've only gotten stronger in that regard. 37-year-old CB Endyl Paru (formerly of the Cosumar NT and All-AO team) had a great season but decided his body has finally had enough. Paru's retirement allowed Eastweald to lure young Taeshani star defender Orion Black away from Yaton FC. When Black is paired with Cosumar NT'er Abdiel Assad, Eastweald might just have the best central defense in the Fiefdom. Andrei Arsamov and Willvamier Taylor are young, athletic defenders on the wings. Aside from Paru, Eastweald will return the rest of last year's squad, going to great lengths to keep key pieces such as Assad and young forward Otto Rush away from the prying hands of foreign clubs. Returning international veterans such as Nephara's Golden Rand (who could forget his heroic performance in the penalty shootout of the Cosumar Cup Final?), Super-Llamaland's Jake Wiggins and Fenbar's Franz Auman were also a huge part of this team's identity last season. Making the Globe Cup and Cygnus Cup was impressive, but I can't help but feel as if Eastweald overachieved last year. It took career-best years from several players, and a fair amount of luck mixed in, for them to achieve what they did. I'm not calling them a fluke, but 2nd place might be a bit too lofty of an expectation considering this team's inability to score. And at age 34, who knows if Ostaltsov has it in him to produce another season like he had last year?
Last Season: 2nd (17-7-10).
Prediction: 5th.
MALLOX
Mallox Township, Gellano Fief
Nickname: Tigers Founded: 804
Ground: Orange Palace (35,700)
Manager: Alvin Burnsides
Starting XI: Tobias Umpton (30) *** Achmed Kazeera (NSR - 29), Torsten Larson (YTT - 24), Gustaf Söder (23), Jorn Ombudsman (21) *** Haruto Takahashi (FEL - 28 - Capt), Grova Na'Xachi (29), Stuart Gildon (27) *** Lucas Cabral (NSI - 21), Jimmy Kelly (NOV - 23), Anders Engström (24)
Preview: Mallox had a fruitful campaign last season, returning to UICA after missing it for the first time in 998. Mallox scored 82 goals (the most seen in Harlighet Ligan since Mallox had 91 eleven year ago) and had two players reach the 20-goal plateau (Anders Engström and Jimmy Kelly). Engström is likely the best player in the Harlighet Ligan right now. He won MVP last season as a 23-year-old and should be even better in the coming season after a productive World Cup 70 Qualification campaign in which he scored 12 goals and tallied 8 assists. Experts are surprised he hasn't cashed in with a move to one of the elite foreign leagues yet. Mallox should enjoy him while he's still here... for at least one more season. And as long as he's here, they will be title contenders. Him and Nova Anglicanan national teamer Jimmy Kelly form a lethal duo in the attack. They combined for 44 goals last season. That's not even mentioning third forward Lucas Cabral and midfielders like Stuart Gildon and Haruto Takahashi, who are capable of putting the ball in the net themselves. Takahashi specifically was huge for the Tigers last season. The 28-year-old Felix international led the team in assists and placed 4th in Foreign Player of the Year voting. Where Alvin Burnsides' squad will struggle (again) is in stopping
the other team from scoring. Gustaf Söder and Jorn Ombudsman are young and inexperienced defenders being forced into starting roles out of necessity. Achmed Kazeera is a solid player at left back, but was injured for significant stretches last year. Mallox addressed the issue by bringing in Fontvieille FC (YTT) defender Torsten Larson to replace underperforming veteran Franz Rowgedeb. Larson is a great young center back, but it's unlikely he'll pull Mallox out of the bottom half of the Harlighet Ligan in defense. But hey, Mallox has never needed a great defense to be successful. It just needs to be good enough to allow them to outscore the other team, and I think it is.
Last Season: 3rd (15-10-9).
Prediction: 2nd.
CASSANDRA CITY
Cassandra City, Criscalus Fief
Nickname: Reds Founded: 882
Ground: The Amphitheatre (53,120)
Manager: Ron Bromwyn
Starting XI: DaMarcus Bender (31) *** Prestion Aneluc (WBO - 24), Jacob Pandan (25), Klaus Minkowski (TFI - 30) *** Nic Farkanhan (25), Kyle Fleming (NOV - 27 - Capt), Cosme (NSI - 22), Richard Vencharde (WBO - 29) *** Thorodel Nagdalene (19), Jol Tortuu (21), Ace Newman (23)
Preview: Cassandra City is
that team that always seems to sneak into the last UICA slot with a hot streak at the end of the season. They did it again last year without Francois Renault, proving that the former captain of the Cosumar national team wasn't the sole reason for their past success. They relied on new young stars Ace Newman and Tevin Lilley to propel them to 4th place, with the two forwards combining for 39 goals. Ace Newman in particular has emerged as one of Cosumar's best scorers. But now, the Reds have a lot to prove again, as the transfer window took a heavy toll on their roster. Lilley and midfielder Pablo Corderro both exited for "better" leagues overseas (Taeshan and Nephara, respectively). They almost lost free agent defensive linchpin Jacob Pandan as well, but managed to extend his contract. It's difficult to replace 18 goals (Lilley) and 11 assists (Corderro). To fill these holes, Cassandra City avoided splurging on a big-name international transfer but instead stuck to their mantra of developing young Cosumarite talent. While news of Lilley's leaving dominated headlines, Ron Bromwyn quietly snagged teenage striker Thorodel Nagdalene from OAS Royal's reserves and bought Jol Tortuu - who was the Tredje Ligan MVP last season with 26 goals. Ace Newman will score 20+ goals again, but he's at his best with other scoring threats around him - which Lilley was last year. They might have some kinks to work out, but I'm not too worried about Cassandra on that end of the pitch. They haven't earned the nickname "Mallox lite" for nothing. Where I am more concerned is at the goalkeeper position. They were actually pretty solid defensively last season, but allowed 58 goals in large part due to the frustratingly poor performance of DaMarcus Bender. He's been at Cassandra a long time and is a fan favorite, but he had an uncharacteristically awful go of it last season. Inexcusable mistakes on Bender's part cost them several games. I was shocked that the club did not address this over the transfer window. At their best, Cassandra City could finish in the top 3 this year. They have one of the more underrated midfields in the league with Nic Farkanhan, Kyle Fleming and Cosme all emerging as excellent players on both sides of the ball. But if Nagdalene and Tortuu don't pan out, or if Bender struggles, or if they have any significant injuries...it could be a disappointing season for the Reds.
Last Season: 4th (15-9-10).
Prediction: 7th.
KLYDE FC
Klyde City, North Klyde Fief
Nickname: Doves Founded: 649
Ground: The Klyde Sportsplex (88,000)
Manager: Jorginho
Starting XI: Sandy Shores (EQS - 34) *** Natasha Davis (95X - 32), Kristian Oberhangen (SEM - 34), Isaiah Ferguson (DSF - 31) *** Benjamin Clucke (MNG - 29), Galen Abbatangelo (YTT - 29), Lucius Kaspian (21), Jacob Madison (DRV - 23), Fraz'm'nar Gor (GLA - 35 - Capt) *** Jacques Bourbon (23), Ejegefe Na'Safeh (33)
Preview: Klyde FC's remarkable turnaround was one of the stories of the season in 999 despite failing to make the UICA. They were simply abysmal for the first half of the season, obviously struggling to come to terms with the absence of Tae Woo Miyori (who won the Buyan Top Division with Blau-Weiss Pallstadt this year). The dysfunctional Doves were in
13th with just eight matches to play, but finally pieced things together at the end to finish 5th - just two points shy of the Globe Cup. That's a 7-0-1 record in the final quarter of the season. If they had been in that sort of form from the start, they might have rivaled Real Azuris for the Harlighet Ligan crown. Can they pick up where they left off at the start of this season? I sincerely hope so, for Jorginho's sake. Another disappointing season will undoubtedly launch a rebuilding process, possibly with someone other than Jorginho at the helm. This team is old and their window for winning with their current core of players won't be open much longer. The average age of their starting goalkeeper and defenders is 33 years old. Their team captain and best midfielder Fraz'm'nar Gor (of the Glaser NT) has just turned 35. Top scorer Ejegefe Na'Safeh is 33. You get the picture. That said, they have some extremely valuable young players like Cosumar U-21 left midfielder Lucius Kaspian and young Darvalian Jacob Madison on the other side. Jacques Bourbon has scored 24 goals over the last two seasons for Klyde, and is a perfect compliment to Na'Safeh going forward. Derikk Simmalton was a promising holding midfielder entering his prime, but the club decided it had had enough of his injury problems and sold him off to Trojana Condommakers FC (QUE) for a tidy sum that was used to bring in Galen Abbatangelo from Fontvieille FC. I want to see the Doves do well because they are one of the most likable teams in the league, true class acts all around. They will be in the mix for a UICA spot, but I'm not sure if they have
a full season of excellence in them. I predicted them to finish highly last year and they let me down. I'm setting the bar lower this time, but I hope they prove me wrong.
Last Season: 5th (15-7-12).
Prediction: 6th.
STONESHORE UNITED
Port Stoneshore, Stoneshore Fief
Nickname: Greys Founded: 771
Ground: Sweethaven Stadium (70,000)
Manager: Wendel Moores
Starting XI: Adren Stefansen (SEM - 24) *** Matt Kinsington (BRE - 34), Alexander Soarhaven (23), Elliott O'Dell (30 - Capt), Justinian Singleton (26), Beltza Gaineratzaile (AUD - 37) *** Esa Vähälä (TOR - 31), Chaim Eizenhart (24), Lawrence Parmenham (WBO - 28) *** Sam Herbjornsrud (BYN - 21), Yuri Makarov (EST - 26)
Preview: Stoneshore United were the ultimate surprise of the 999 season, and by far the most improved team. They would've been relegated after 998 if it weren't for the Harlighet Ligan's expansion to 18 teams. But they took advantage of the FSF's gift proved they belong not only in the top flight, but in the conversation for a Top 5 finish. I predicted the Greys to finish 14th last year, and they far exceeded my expectations, or anyone's for that matter. In retrospect, it shouldn't have been
that surprising. Young Buyanese forward Sam Herbjornsrud made an immediate impact and lessened the unfair load that had been placed on Yuri Makarov's shoulders. They also added a pacey CAM with great vision in Lawrence Parmenham, who came in and provided a spark for the previously lifeless Stoneshore attack. They still rank near the bottom of the league in goals-scored, but it was vast improvement. Adren Stefansen has emerged as one of the better goalkeepers in the Harlighet Ligan, and his job has been made easier by "The Iron Curtain", the nickname given to Stoneshore's five starting defenders, bookended by Nephara's Matt Kinsington and Audioslavian veteran Beltza Gaineratzaile, and anchored in the middle by team captain Elliott O'Dell. Wendel Moores' extremely defensive tactics were grilled by fans and experts alike after the 998 season, but it looked awfully effective last year. Stoneshore was quiet over the transfer window, re-signing free agent full back Justinian Singleton and not much else. But you know what won't be quiet? Sweethaven Stadium for the season opener. These supporters have been rejuvenated and it should make for an exciting season. The Harlighet Ligan is better when Stoneshore is better.
Last Season: 6th (14-10-10).

RAMUSOK UNITED
Ramusok, Ramusok Fief
Nickname: Blues Founded: 751
Ground: Fire River Arena (80,000)
Manager: Alf Durand
Starting XI: Tomi Koskinen (33 - Capt) *** Jonatan Stuttgart (27), Kirum Mortonsson (28), Mike Flanningan (SSI - 22), Maurice Arkazan (WBO - 26) *** Roald Aguero (22), Robin Geirsson (PIS - 22), Valentin Hornak (29), Martin Mazida (26) *** Gabriel Nowitzki (25), Raphael Xodó (NSI - 19)
Preview: It was a disappointing year for fans in Ramusok. Spirits were high after a 2nd place finish in 998, but Ram U just never got it going in 999. They still finished only three points away from the Globe Cup despite their struggles. Make no mistake, if they fully realize their potential...the Blues have championship quality. But their last championship season (994) is feeling more and more distant. Tomi Koskinen continues to be a dominant force guarding Ram U's goal. Kirum Mortonsson, despite his struggles in World Cup 70, is still an all-star defender in the Harlighet Ligan. The Blues boast one of the most dangerous midfield units in the league. Robin Geirsson, who is currently playing for Polar Islandstates in the Copa Rushmori, is a true bastion of excellence and one of the most talented players in the league and has soaring confidence with the ball. His counterpart in right midfield, Martin Mazida, has been a great player for several years in the Sekundar and Harlighet Ligans and has come up in NT call-up rumors for World Cup 71. In left midfield, Roald Aguero is a delightful young talent who is completing his final stint with the Cosumar U-21 team in the Di Bradini Cup. Ram U has lots of quality in the back and midfield, but their primary weakness is their relatively tame attack. Gabriel Nowitzki and Sunrisian youngster Raphael Xodó are decent forwards, but neither exactly strike fear in the heart of defenders. To cement themselves, they needed to get a world class striker to take advantage of the chances created by the brilliant midfielders. I said the same thing last year, but once again, they failed to do so. It shouldn't be too large of a hindrance, but they just didn't score quite enough goals last year. There is something to be said for continuity, however, and Ram U I returning all eleven starters. I would be shocked if they didn't improve on their 7th place finish. They have as good of a chance at making the Globe Cup as anyone, but there's about 8-10 teams that could conceivably make the top four. There's a lot of parity at the top of the Harlighet Ligan this year - it will be a dogfight for those spots.
Last Season: 7th (15-6-13).
Prediction: 4th.
OAS ROYAL FC
Område av Storslagenhet, Ramusok Fief
Nickname: Whites or
Royals Founded: 982
Ground: The Royal Palace (54,000)
Manager: Luke Crisalus
Starting XI: Jaclyn Maris (NPH - 31) *** Sebastian Myers (SLL - 22), Jon-Perohlin Nodtveit (28), Nicola Pecoraro (OSR - 24), Jannick Kontiola (QUE - 21) *** Mustafa Hendrix (24), James Dechmille (32), Landon Cowan (DSF - 27), Younda Fahad (PAT - 21) *** Atlas Yrska (CAL - 20), Sur Arora (32 - Capt)
Preview: The aura of invincibility around OAS Royal FC has all but faded. They're still the most valuable club in Cosumar thanks to those 4 championships a decade ago and their location in the royal district of the capital, but they haven't been in the UICA in four seasons. They're still an upper echelon team, but opponents can be fairly confident going into The Royal Palace that they'll come out with a win. That never used to happen. But, once again, they were among the biggest spenders this transfer window and made huge improvements to their team. I like what Luke Crisalus is doing, and I don't care what the Whites' haters say...I predict they will make a return to UICA play this season. It might not be the Champions' Cup like I so passionately believed last year as an admittedly biased supporter, but this team is too good to slouch in the middle of the table. Just look at the quality across the board. They parted ways with beloved 37-year-old centre back Alexander Pearce, but replaced him with two huge signings: Super-Llamaland NT left back Sebastian Myers and Nicola Pecoraro, a CB of national team potential for Osarius. They also managed to lure in Younda Fahad, the fourth-leading scorer of all-time for the Patistani national team at a mere 21 years of age. He adds a touch of flair in Whites' midfield that might've been the missing link last year. Combined with returning superstars Jon-Perohlin Nodtveit and Sur Arora, OAS Royal's squad is fearsome. Arora is coming off the best World Cup campaign of his distinguished career, in which he became Cosumar's all-time leading scorer. This team is stacked from top to bottom. If Luke Crisalus does not produce results this year, he is gone - no excuses. The same might be the case for prized young forward Atla Yrska, who arrived with much fanfare but has been a bit disappointing through two seasons.
Last Season: 8th (13-11-10).
Prediction: 3rd.
FC KALDUKOSIC
Kaldukosic, Kaldukosic Fief
Nickname: Stars Founded: 756
Ground: Leviathan Arena (98,000)
Manager: Daniel Laramie
Starting XI: Karl Tennfjord (TOR - 26) *** Andres Undenwald (33 - Capt), Tomasso Tenebrosa (20), Erick Garyson (CHI - 30), Redd Banner (SSI - 21) *** Isaac Archambault (22), Steven Bennett (DRV - 28), Kit Kvanderwyk (17) *** Bennett Perkins (21), Grenville Antonsson (26), Chris Hodges (NOV - 26)
Preview: Three-quarters of the way through the 999 season, it looked like Daniel Laramie had finally managed to turn things around at Kaldukosic. After countless disappointing mid-table seasons, the Stars were riding a six-game winning streak and had ascended as high as 5th place. Then, in typical FC Kal style, they collapsed down the home stretch, losing their next six matches by a combined score of 14-3. They ended up rounding out the final spot in the top half (9th), a slight improvement over 998's 11th place debacle. The club smelled of a lack of discipline, accountability or even passion under Alex O'Neill's reign. Laramie is a sterm disciplinarian, and seems to have the club heading in the right direction, but he needs more than one season to instill a winning culture into this team. It was an up-and-down season, but there are bright spots to be optimistic about - like the club's ability to develop young talent. Tomasso Tenebrosa, Isaac Archambault and Bennett Perkins were/are phenomenal for the Cosumar U-21 squad. If the club can find a way to keep these players in Kaldukosic as they continue to develop, they might just be a few years away from a dynasty. Honestly, they have the potential to very good right now. With capped internationals from good countries sprinkled across the roster (Chris Hodges of Nova Anglicana being the newest addition) and one of the league's best finishers in Grenville Antonsson, they should be in the UICA
right now. I think the Stars make another stride up the table this season. But they've disappointed me before.
Last Season: 9th (13-7-14).
Prediction: 8th.
CRAWFORD CITY FC
Crawford, Numenvernien Fief
Nickname: Elephants Founded: 924
Ground: Orangi Stadium (61,000)
Manager: Rastus Van Daele
Starting XI: Perseus Theoklitos (PRV - 20) *** Sophia Chambers (NPH - 34), Lyndon Pell (21), Efe Na'Kele (20), Jens Reiniger (PAS - 21) *** Elveund Kirumsen (20), Phillip Sherman (26 - Capt), Sigi Potter (ALB - 27) *** Chad Overstreet (22), Adren Muller (SEM - 26), Mikah Andersen (29)
Preview: After coming out of nowhere with a dynamic young squad that grew up together to steal a Globe Cup berth in 998, their roster was plundered by bigger clubs both in Cosumar and abroad. Timo Sorben gone to Barunia. Jakk Winterfyll gone to Apox. Kristian Gjallskald gone to Nova Anglicana. It makes you wonder what the point of all this is if a squad is pilfered as soon as it threatens to break the glass ceiling. Now, Crawford faces the difficult task of reaching those heights again with a hastily assembled group of new faces. Their 10th place finish last season wasn't exactly encouraging in the first year of their rebuilding process, but Rastus Van Daele feels he is up for the challenge of orchestrating another UICA-worthy run. They still have some of the key pieces from 998 - like team captain Phillip Sherman in midfield, young winger Chad Overstreet and striker Mikah Andersen. Plus, they had a fruitful transfer window, coming down with a huge prize: Pasargan right back Jens Reiniger. They also picked up Cosumar U-21 midfielder Elveund Kirumsen from Klyde Heritage and Pravennan goalie Perseus Theoklitos. He will be the x-factor for the Elephants this season. His abilities at this level are a relative unknown. Crawford City FC will not achieve its goals unless Theoklitos can come reasonably close to the play of Jakk Winterfyll, which might be a bit of a reach. This team has talent, but there are more complete squads out there.
Last Season: 10th (13-6-15).
Prediction: 9th.
VERSIAVILLE SC
Versiaville, Versia Fief
Nickname: Villagers Founded: 907
Ground: Versiaville Pavilion (31,200)
Manager: Guston Cox
Starting XI: Graham MacAmlaigh (28) *** Spike Lorence (NPH - 23), Jordan Strumm (21), Aleksi Soderlund (19), Dale Cooper (OSR - 24) *** Cyle Haber (21), Leila Cayenne (NPH - 32), Olivier Eliot (29 - Capt), Helmut Schima (BRE - 32) *** Asa Nemtheanga (20), Octavius Ioda (22)
Preview: I picked Versiaville SC to finish dead last in 999. Shows how much I know. The Villagers came out fearless in their first Harlighet Ligan season in three years, storming to a 7-6-5 record at the halfway point, including a 4-1 win over champions Real Azuris. Just about everyone on their roster, from goalie Graham MacAmlaigh to the striker duo of Ioda and Nemtheanga, exceeded expectations. They didn't sustain that level of success over the whole season, but they still finished higher than the other two new arrivals in 11th place. Their most glaring weakness was their porous defense. The Eliot-Nemtheanga-Ioda triangle could score goals against anyone in the league, but their back line was tragically bad - mostly consisting of Sekundar Ligan scraps and old has-beens. They aggressively attacked this problem over the transfer window, picking up Nepharan defensive midfielder Leila Cayenne and quality young full back Jordan Strumm on free transfer and winning a bidding war for Osarian defender Dale Cooper. I think last year was a bit of a fluke, but I think they're good enough to really earn a top-half finish this season if their defending improves in proportion to the dollars spent. They will win a few games on the virtue of their brilliant young strike duo of Nemtheanga and Ioda.
Last Season: 11th (11-11-12).

MORPONTE FIEF
Mortim, Morponte Fief
Nickname: Riders Founded: 856
Ground: OmniTech Park (29,680)
Manager: Grant Bulle
Team Captain: Esteban Hernandez (19) *** Fabian Zavaleta (30), Coy Bossard (GWA - 28), Eithan Sigurdsson (20), Pol Na'Tam (23) *** Kyron Everdale (25), Adam Willis (TCU - 35), Abel Scarloff (37 - Capt), Pauly Shorts (ESI - 21) *** Curtis Hickory (32), Leo Montarvo (WBO - 19)
Preview: 999 was a little-bit of a disappointing year for Morponte. No one was terribly surprised by the result, but Grant Bulle had been hoping to build upon their 9th place finish in 998. Former NT star midfielder Abel Scarloff has announced he will retire after the 1000 season, and is squeezing every last ounce of excellence he has left for his hometown club. This Morponte team is a peculiar mix of wily old veterans and young prospects, with little middle ground. The leaders of the team are clearly Scarloff (37), forward Curtis Hickory (32) and Calanian midfielder Adam Willis (35). On the other hand, Morponte’s elite youth academy continues to churn out fresh talents like Cosumar U-21's starting goalkeeper Esteban Hernandez (19), defender Eithan Sigurdsson (20) and Western Borderlands striker Leo Montarvo (19) - who are being plugged straight into starting roles alongside their more well-traveled teammates. It’s an interesting concoction. It surely facilitates great learning and development for the youngsters and allows the veterans to act as mentors, but playing their raw talents against elite competition has resulted in some humbling losses. One of the only players in the middle of this divide, left midfielder Kyron Everdale, is the unheralded MVP of this team. He has linked up with Hickory and Montarvo so well the last two years, while also having the pace and athleticism to make up for slowing teammates Scarloff and Willis. The middle of the Harlighet Ligan table is as tightly-packed as a can of sardines - the Riders could feasibly finish anywhere from 8th to 14th.
Last Season: 12th (12-7-15).

Samotath, Parougan Fief
Nickname: Blackhawks Founded: 845
Ground: Lockwood Memorial Stadium (35,000)
Manager: Casimiro Rosales ---> Sid Dawson
Starting XI: Oskar Gondalez (31) *** Klyde Kruger (30), Elias Hermesniemi (PIS - 28), Stewart Lennox (31), Emory Gurrevitz (31 - Capt) *** Blue Skies (EQS - 25), Robby Jepsen (24), Ezekiel Tarkanian (18) *** Jean-Pierre Mons (GWA - 25), Devon Noble (24), Aleksei Adrianov (EST - 25)
Preview: FC Samotath supporters, brace yourselves for what I'm about to say....the Blackhawks are in danger of their first EVER relegation this season. I'm not predicting it's going to happen, I'm merely saying that the club is flirting dangerously close with the edge. They only had two more wins than Na'Malsille Mariners, who were ironically relegated for the first time ever last season. And now Casimiro Rosales has been sacked and inexperienced caretaker manager Sid Dawson is taking over. If that wasn't enough, club figureheads Roberto DeCinezo and Addam Andsman-Savage both retired over the offseason. In less than a year, the Blackhawks have been stripped of much of their identity and leadership. I'm not slighting Dawson or the remaining players, but those sorts of intangible things are important ingredients to success and aren't so easy to replace. They didn't upgrade their mediocre aging back line and lost their top two scorers. This could potentially be setting the stage for a disastrous season for a Blackhawks squad without motivation. Or maybe I'm just bat-shit crazy and new arrivals Jean-Pierre Mons, Aleksi Adrianov and Ezekiel Tarkanian will take the league by storm.
Last Season: 13th (11-10-13).
Prediction: 16th, Relegation Playoff.
AC HOLMENKOLLEN
Holmenkollen, Ramusok Fief
Nickname: Cedars Founded: 971
Ground: Cedar Road (17,900)
Manager: Martyn Dirchs
Starting XI: Max Jopzam (31) *** Ben Seppänen (26), Neville Bloxham (30 - Capt), Abram Axelsson (24), Arda (CRY - 23) *** Vyacheslav Kolen (24), Carlo Dellavedova (19), Adnan Valerikssen (SEM - 22), Kozi Early (28) *** Cyril Christopherson (25), Dmytro Kurosawa (SAR - 27)
Preview: In many ways, AC Holmenkollen feels like a Sekundar or even Tredje Ligan club. It represents a small suburban town, its stadium is the smallest in the top flight and its facilities and budget are humble. But make no mistake, the Cedars are a Harlighet Ligan team where it counts: on the pitch. They are the only club to ever spend time in Tredje Ligan and work their way back up all the way to the top flight. Martyn Dirchs has done a masterful job of maximizing his team’s ability by pinpointing undervalued, underrated, and overlooked players and developing them into a cohesive team that plays as one. Their starting eleven remains unchanged from last year, further strengthening the chemistry upon which they rely. They’re not the most talented bunch (although their stay in the Harlighet Ligan has allowed them to lure a few noteworthy international transfers such as DF Arda from Crystal Empire and MF Adnan Valerikssen from Semarland) but they’re well-coached, intelligent and visibly give 100% effort. Sarrbian striker Dmytro Kurosawa is the star of the team, and scored 16 goals last season. The Cedars are very solid in the back as well, led by veteran defenders Neville Bloxham and Ben Seppänen. AC Holmenkollen will probably get outclassed by the Harlighet Ligan’s elite teams again (though they might just claim a few scalps, mind you). It sometimes feels as if they are just barely managing to keep their heads above the water, but I like their prospects to stay up a second consecutive season.
Last Season: 14th (12-7-15).
Prediction: 14th.
CENTUS SERPENTS
Centus, Gellano Fief
Nickname: Serpents Founded: 814
Ground: Somerset Road (45,000)
Manager: Angus Howell
Starting XI: Leo Mulsen (SEM - 23) *** Antony Amilfaltino (31), Stinger (EQS - 31), Duane Cornish (24), Perton Radcliff (28) *** Malcolm Boccarin (27), Luco Haines (21), Gutinho (WSI - 19), Myrlon Wilska (21) *** Milo Gregory (GWA - 23), Andreas Brennan (26 - Capt)
Preview: It's good for the Harlighet Ligan when huge media markets like Centus are represented, but as a fan of football first and foremost, I was a bit disappointed that the Serpents edged out the Mariners for the last scrap of dry land at the end of last season. I thought Na'Malsille was a thoroughly better team and wanted them to stay up instead of Centus, but the points don't lie I suppose. The team benefited significantly from the unexpected emergence of teenage Sunrisian midfielder Gutinho as a player with true star-quality. I considered Centus' midfield painfully lackluster going into the season (which they still were aside from Gutinho), but he ended up 5th place for U-21 Player of the Year. Watfordian forward Milo Gregory also provided a valuable spark at times and paired well with team captain Andreas Brennan in the attack, lending the Centus veteran some much-needed assistance up front. Their back line was quite solid as expected despite the loss of Jukka Lindroos to Vilita. Amilfaltino, Stinger, Cornish and Radcliff have all proven to be quite capable Harlighet Ligan players. All in all, the Centus Serpents are now a well-rounded team with few weaknesses but they have few outstanding strengths either. They're a bona-fide average squad. Angus Howell is one of the more underrated managers in Cosumar, but it might take a bit of luck for him to deliver a third straight Harlighet Ligan season to Centus.
Last Season: 15th (9-11-14).
Prediction: 17th, Relegation.
NOMAD BROTHERHOOD FC
Sweeney, Culmarland Fief
Nickname: Nomads Founded: 766
Ground: Sweeney Station (27,240)
Manager: Tiago Peña
Starting XI: Cormak Lethbridge (18) *** Adam Stones (25), Rult Frampton (26), Anxo Crusan (TSA - 22), Antoon Chapman (28 - Capt) *** Elbert Pierce (SUS - 25), Mikael Micheulus (24) *** Aziz Senturk (21), Andrei Nikolov (EST - 27), Jorge Caputo (25) *** Pato Yamaguchi (22)
Preview: The Nomads were so good last year in their conquest of the Sekundar Ligan, but you never know how a team will translate to the top flight. Will their inexperience and lack of squad depth show? Tiago Peña has his team built on a solid spine. Cormak Lethbridge, though young, is a consistent force in the goal and a natural shot-stopper with his springy reflexes and huge hands. In front of him, Rult Frampton is a dependable center back in the ilk of William Riley. He dominates proceedings in the air, rarely loses a tackle and has few qualms about putting a body part where others would not put their worst enemy. Team captain Antoon Chapman is a quality right back who is a huge threat in the attack from the wing. The transfer window signing of Anxo Crusan should only help matters in the back and allow Chapman to get forward more. Ahead of Lethbridge and Frampton is Andrei Nikolov. The central midfielder arrived mid-season in 999 and made an instant impact, averaging 66 passes in his 28 starts with an 84% success rate. Completing this formidable spine is Pato Yamaguchi. The young striker scored 17 goals and set up another 12, meaning he was involved in almost half of the Brotherhood's goals last season. The purple-clad side is confident, as they should be, but they might be brought back down to Earth as soon as they face teams like Real Azuris and Mallox. However, come the final whistle, they should have been able to do enough to ensure their Harlighet Ligan status for another year.
Last Season: Sekundar Ligan Champions (19-5-10).
Prediction: 15th.
WEST GUNDAR FC
Ruminov, Gundar Fief
Nickname: Rugged Men Founded: 924
Ground: Harmonia Stadium (23,000)
Manager: Peter Honeycutt
Starting XI: Tim Smith (APX - 34) *** Septon Pertwee (22), Oliver Pugh (29), Franz Rowgedeb (32 - Capt), Brooke Nolan (VLM - 20) *** Sebastian de Wit (23), Jared Flynn (32), Firuq Al-Donari (21), Mark Hallen (SEM - 22) *** Jon Gope (30), Alberto Silva (27)
Preview: Of the three newly-promoted clubs, West Gundar FC is the best equipped for immediate success. After a one-year stay in the Sekundar Ligan, they are back in the top flight again - and most of their players already have proven themselves at this level. They won't need nearly as much time to find their footing as the Nomads or Helfin Fief will. The Rugged Men had the second-best defense in the Sekundar Ligan last year, and they bolstered it
even more over the transfer window. Apox's Tim Smith is a major upgrade at goalkeeper, and landing veteran defender Franz Rowgedeb of Mallox fame was a major steal. Apparently, Rowgedeb has already made such an impression on Peter Honeycutt that the manager has already given him the captain's armband. They also signed Venta de la Mesilla U-21 right back Brooke Nolan on free transfer. West Gundar won't ship too many goals. That leaves it up to Alberto Silva to win games. Silva won the Sekundar Ligan's golden boot last season with 21 goals. He is the clear MVP of this squad and is in tip-top form. He will be eager to prove himself and erase his Harlighet Ligan struggles in 998. Midfielder Jared Flynn has played with Silva in Ruminov for several years and the two link up remarkably well. Fellow forward Jon Gope and pacey wingers Sebastian de Wit and Semarland's Mark Hallen are also more than capable of netting a few. This an already-solid squad that got even better over the transfer window and should be primed for a push upwards towards the middle of the table. If the "big boys" don't take the Rugged Men seriously, especially at Harmonia Stadium, they could get burned.
Last Season: 2nd in Sekundar Ligan (16-10-8).
Prediction: 13th.
HELFIN FIEF
DeFinko, Helfin Fief
Nickname: Protons Founded: 911
Ground: Scandrick's Stadium (28,000)
Manager: Conley Goddard
Starting XI: Adrian Linderman (35) *** MacFarlane Naresh (TSA - 23), Zakk Catonaldi (28), Daniel Calderon (31), Marcel-Eric N'Zonzi (SEM - 30) *** Peder Hardwick (24), Jukka Hanstad (POL - 25), Neil Bravo (25), Felix Victorsson (30 - Capt) *** Atherton Telfair (21), Miguel Cano (20)
Preview: The odds for survival are dim, and financial playing field is the opposite of level, but as long as Conley Goddard is running things and Neil Bravo is wearing yellow, there is a chance for the Protons. His tight-knit, focused band of players took the Sekundar Ligan by surprise last season and won a close play-off scrape with Na'Malsille to trade places with the Mariners, but the Harlighet Ligan is a much tougher nut to crack. Goddard did the best he could to upgrade his squad with limited resources over the transfer window, bringing in foreign talents MacFarlane Naresh, Marcel-Eric N'Zonzi and Jukka Hanstad as well as Cosumarite free agents Zakk Catonaldi and Miguel Cano. But here's the problem: only three Helfin players have ever seen Harlighet Ligan action even once (Linderman, Catonaldi, Victorsson). Linderman is well past his prime and is likely to be one of the worst first-team goalkeepers in the league this year. Catonaldi hasn't played in the top flight since his brief, fitful stay with FC Samotath five years ago. The key for Helfin Fief's survival will be Neil Bravo, as usual. Bravo is a phenomenal passer and a true maestro with his vision on the pitch, which is why he was voted Sekundar Ligan MVP last year. But he'll need some help if Helfin Fief is to avoid to bottom three or even two. His partnership with Felix Victorsson has been a solid one for the last two years, and Atherton Telfair showed promise with some big goals last season, but I'm not sure it will be enough. The Protons will give it their best go, but 15th would be a fantastic result for them.
