Baptism of Iron 4 - RP/Roster/Results

Postby Delaclava » Thu Dec 24, 2009 7:36 am

It's that time again! Welcome to the 4th Baptism of Iron, hosted in Delaclava, the 2nd Baptism of Iron champions! 18 of you come in, with no international gridball experience. 17 will travel to Qazox empty-handed. 1 will lift the trophy at the end of the final whistle, in the final game.

This is where you post rosters and roleplaying, and then come back to see if it helped. Remember, none of you are ranked, so the RP will be very important!

There are 18 teams, detailed here:
United Gordontopia
Swartaz
Mount Kip
Alpha-land
Teinohikira
Kinstantia
Voltronica
Oberour Ar Moro
Bavin
Andrewboy
Cheztope
Vistoria
Al-Mumtaz
Ceruleo
San Giorgio a Cremano
Whittoria
Acadianne
F1-Insanity

There will be 3 groups of 6, and the groups will be drawn Friday, December 25, 9:00 PM EST (200 UTC). Each team will play each of their groupmates once. Then, the top two from each group, and the two best third-place finishers, advance. The tiebreakers, if necessary, are: H2H record, point differential, points scored. In a three way tie, H2H point differential will be used. If there are still ties, all tied teams advance.

The eight remaining teams go to a single-elimination knockout round, which will determine our champion. The matchday schedule is as follows:

MD1: Dec. 26th
MD2: Dec. 28th
MD3: Dec. 29th
MD4: Dec. 30th
MD5: Dec. 31st
OFF-DAY - Jan. 1st
Quarters: Jan. 2nd
Semis: Jan. 3rd

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

Pumas depart for the Baptism of Iron
Bavin City, Lesser Argenguay.

At a gala ceremony in Bavin City today, the team members of the Bavinese National Gridiron team, the Pumas, officially left for Delaclava for the Baptism of Iron IV, a débutante tournament for the World Bowl. All those teams heading to Delaclava were unknowns until now, but soon, one would be known.

The Pumas trip to the World Bowl represents the first attempt by the Bavinese people in an international sports competition. The team's coach, Alano Cruz, formerly served as the head coach of Walka University, leading the Walka Eagles to no less then four College Bowl titles. Whether he will bring home a world title or not, is unknown. In a press conference at the City Hall, he expressed his feelings about the coming season.

"I'm eager," he said to a reporter from the Soa Post-Intelligencer,"I really think that the Baptism of Iron will give us a good feel for the competition we'd face at the World Bowl. I don't think we're going to have a World Bowl win anytime soon, but we do aim to be a contender."

Tomorrow the Pumas face down the team from F-1 Insanity, which is sure to be an interesting game. Here's the rest of their schedule.

MD1: Dec. 27th: against F-1 Insanity
MD2: Dec. 28th: against Voltronica
MD3: Dec. 29th: against Kinstantia
MD4: Dec. 30th: against Swartz
MD5: Dec. 31st: against Acadianne

DAVID HANDY: This is David Handy for Acadianne Cable Sports reporting live from Delaclava, the site of Baptism of Iron IV. The Acadianne Huguenots are one of 18 so-called debutant teams who are competing for the championship. The Huge's arrived here this afternoon, and wasted no time getting down to business. Only an hour after arriving in the city, they were on their designated practice field running two-minute drills and preparing for their first game. That game will be played against the Kinstantian national team on what is designated as "Matchday 1."

I caught up with coach Sean Cromwell and some of the players as they prepared for the first big match-up.

[CUT TO CLIP OF COACH CROMWELL]

SEAN CROMWELL: We're a new team, but our guys are hungry to prove themselves in front of a global audience. No matter what happens, I know we're going to surprise some people, and make Acadianne proud.

[CUT TO STARTING QB BOBBY BOQUET]

BOBBY BOQUET: We're going to be facing some tough teams. There's no doubt about that. We're just going to go out there, rely on our fundamentals, and have some fun. I'm looking forward to the first game.

[CUT TO WR THEO BABINEAUX]

THEO BABINEAUX: Shoot, man, there ain't no team better than the Huge's. Tell all those people back home to book their tickets to the championship game, 'cause we're gonna BE there!"

[CUT BACK TO DAVID HANDY OUTSIDE OF THE STADIUM]

DH: (chuckling) Well, you see there, no lack of confidence from Theo Babineaux. Still, there's a lot of football to be played between now and the championship. The ONLY guarantee is that ACS will be here to cover every play. In Delaclava, this is David Handy for Acadianne Cable Sports.

Pumas Defeat F-1 Insanity
Sven Svenson, reporting from Delaclava

Our Pumas today defeated the national team of F-1 Insanity 21-10. The first quarter was scoreless, as both teams defenses dominated the field. Most notable was the fumble by Puma's QB Travis Benoit, after which the ball was picked up for a run by F-1 Insanity's LOLB, who took it all the way to the redzone. The Pumas fought back, and prevented a score.

The second quarter began with a touchdown by F-1 Insanity, and remained scoreless until Bavinese CB Vasco Sierra intercepted the ball and ran 49 yards for a touchdown. As the third quarter began, the Pumas scored another touchdown, with Alexander Koch scoring on a 1 yard drive.F-1 struggled hard, managing only a 38 yard field goal. The forth quarter began with a Bavinese touchdown on a kickoff return following F-1's field goal by Oscar Hsü The rest of the game was scoreless, with the Puma's winning 21-10.

This game was dominated by the performances of running backs Jack Thompson and Alex Koch, kick returner Oscar Hsü, and the defensive performances of CB Vasco Sierra, ROLB Jacob Cerda, and SS Ben Petheö. Thompson and Koch's running game, set up by Hsü's kick returns, was the only functional part of the Pumas offense, with QB Travis Benoit throwing an interception and fumbling the ball, and two wide receivers missing easy catches throughout the
game.

Coach Alano Cruz vowed in his post-game press conference to work hard to improve the passing game, especially the throwing of QB Travis Benoit, which was unusually bad.

"I don't know what he was doing," Cruz said,"Maybe he was hung over. He was damn lucky the running game pulled through,"

With its current GD of 11, the Pumas are currently poised to enter the playoffs in a wild card position. The other two games in our Group were both blowouts with Voltronica dominating Swartaz 26-3 and Acadianne beating Kinstantia 6-27. Voltronica currently leads the Group with a GD of 23, while Acadianne follows with 21. The biggest GD in the league is a whopping 55, delivered to the Al-Mumtaz Holy Phenoix for their slaughter of Vistoria 55-0. In second place in Group B is San Giorgio, with 26 GD, and Oberour taking the other wild card slot. In Group A, Cheztope leads with a GD of 17 following their win over Andrewboy, and Whittoria is the lowest scoring team currently qualified for the playoffs with a GD of 10.

Tomorrow the Pumas take on the Group Leader Voltronica, in a duel for the Group Lead. As things stand, the Pumas must score ten points more then Voltronica, plus whatever the Acadianne's GD is at the time to take control of the Group.

Our coach's nickname is also 'Insanity' meaning he'll go for unorthodox stuff more often than Bill Belichick, going for it on 4th down is basically a given, unless someone can talk him out of it.

The sports host concluded the great broadcast with the words, 'someone is gonna lose his job over this, and it isn't me' (as the picture faded out with an image of head coach Sean 'Insanity')...

Hip hop music blared from a boom box in the locker room as the Huguenots changed and cleaned up after a confidence boosting first game. The 21 point victory over Kinstanita had been huge for the debutant team.

Theo Babineaux came out of the shower wearing only a towel around his waist. The wide receiver had caught two touchdown passes in the easy victory. The normally confident, cocky athlete was full of himself this evening.

“There ain ‘t no better team IN this competition,” Babineaux yelled over the music to anyone within earshot. “This is just the tip of the iceberg. We’re going all the way! Ya’ll better be ready!”

Nearby, quarterback Bobby Boquet was chuckling. He pointed at Babineaux. “It doesn’t hurt when I have wide receivers that can catch two touchdown passes in a game. Good job, man. You’re going to make The Iceman jealous.”

The Iceman was wide receiver Bryan-Paul Frost. He earned the nickname in college due to the cool, calculated way in which he consistently made big plays when given the ball. Frost was currently a star wide receiver for the Cathedral City Saints of the Acadianne National Football Federation (the nation’s pro football league). Everyone thought Frost would be the standout receiver for the Huguenots. After one game with the Acadianne national team, Babineaux had been the star wideout.

Frost sat two lockers down from Boquet. He grinned as he laced up the sneakers he had worn to the stadium. Far from being jealous, Frost seemed happy for Babineaux. “As long as we keep winning like we did today, I don’t care who’s catching those touchdown passes,” the Iceman said. He winked at Babineaux, “I just hope you don’t play against the Saints once the ANFF season starts back up again.”

Just then, the music shut off. Everyone looked toward where the boom box was, and found Coach Cromwell standing there.

Cromwell was the head coach of the Olmstead Jacks (so named because the State of Olmstead was known for its abundance of lavish casinos) during the ANFF season. In his 10 years of coaching, he had won 3 Hadrian Cups. Because of his record, he had been chosen to coach the national team.

“Listen up!” Cromwell shouted. “You men put on one hell of a show this evening. There were a couple of mistakes and miscues, but I was proud of what we were able to accomplish. You’ll hear more from me later, but there’s someone on the phone right now who wants to congratulate you.” The coach turned to an assistant. “Hit the loudspeakers.” The assistant flipped a switch on the wall, and the speakers on the ceiling crackled to life.

“Gentlemen,” the voice of Acadianne President Sullivan Murphy filled the room, “I wanted to congratulate you all on a job very well done today. Everyone already knows that you’re the best players that Acadianne has to offer. Now go and show everyone what we here in the Republic already knows: That you’re the best players on the planet.”

The players cheered. When it was quiet again, the president continued. “Keep doing what you did today, and I know I’ll be calling again soon to congratulate you on winning the championship. You’ve got an entire nation pulling for you.” The loudspeakers clicked off.

“I couldn’t have said it better myself,” Cromwell said. “Get cleaned up, and get some rest. We’ll meet back at the practice field at 6:30 tomorrow morning.”

Puma's Seize the Lead
Sven Svenson, reporting from Delaclava

After the last game, Travis Benoit promised a better offensive performance, and in the second half of this game he delivered it. The first half was a defensive battle, with just a pair of scores. The Puma's worked down the field, getting a pair of field goals, 32 and 35 yards respectively. However, in the second half, things changed. To put it simply, Benoit found his groove, throwing perfect pass after perfect pass, penetrating the Voltronic defense a total of four times, with three touchdown passes, and a 32 yard run by Jack Thompson.

Also worth mentioning is the once again phenomenal defensive performance by Vasco Sierra and Jacob Cerda, shutting down numerous Voltronic drives, and turning over the ball three times, with two interceptions and a fumble. It also goes without saying that Benoit's offensive performance was spectacular, delivering the kind of passes that we expected and enjoyed from his time on the Soa Sharks.

Alano Cruz congratulated the team in the locker room, but was careful to point out numerous times the failure to score a touchdown in the first half.

"It was a good thing their defense decided to take a nap, otherwise we wouldn't have the points to take the lead."

As things stand, the Puma's now lead Group C with a comfortable margin of 38 GD over the next team, Acadianne, who the Puma's face in match 5. Around the rest of the tournament, Al-Mumtaz continued their dominance of Group B with another stunning win over Mt. Kip, giving them an almost insurmountable lead over the rest of the Group. In Group A, Cheztope continued their lead, winning a 6-3 snooze fest against Gordonopia. The current teams qualified for the playoffs are:

The Puma's next game is against 4th place Kinstantia

DAVID HANDY: I'm David Handy reporting once again from Delaclava. The Huguenots were looking to add to the momentum that they started with on Matchday 1. Unfortunately for the millions of fan back home, that momentum came to a screeching halt as the home team ran into a brick wall. A brick wall called the F-1 Insanity Mulcaheys.

The Hugues started out hot in their opening drive, with Marques Coleman taking the kickoff all the to the Huguenot 41 yard line. First play from scrimmage, quarterback Bobby Boquet connects with wideout Bryn-Paul Frost for a 12 yard gain and a first down in Mulcaheys territory. A couple of solid runs by Alf Jorgensen followed. It looked like it would be an easy march into the endzone.....Then the Mulcaheys defense woke up. Jorgensen was stuffed by the defensive line on first down at the Mulcaheys 37 yard line. the QB tried to counter with a pass to the star of Matchday 1, Theo Babineaux, but it was batted away. The drive stalled on the 29 yard line, and Ken Flood was brought out for the field goal. Flood would be the Huguenots standout player of the game, scoring 2 field goals in the 6-20 loss to the F-1 Insanity Mulcaheys. The Hugues are 1-1 after Matchday 2. They just couldn't get it done against a Mulcaheys team that was looking to bounce back from a big loss on the first day of the Baptism of Iron.

DH: After the game, Coach Cromwell spoke to the press.

[CUT TO CLIP OF COACH CROMWELL]

COACH SEAN CROMWELL: What can I say? We made too many mistakes, and the Mulcahey defense got the better of us. They were hungry for a win after their first loss on Matchday 1, and we were obviously a little too overconfident after our first win.

DH: Bobby Boquet said it was tough to get into any kind passing rhythm after that initial drive.

[CUT TO CLIP OF QB BOBBY BOQUET]

BOBBY BOQUET: You know Theo and I, Bryan and I, we kept trying to get into that groove...that rhythm. We just couldn't do it. I don't know if it was mistakes on our part, or a defense that showed up ready to play. We'll just get back to the practice field tomorrow morning, look at the film of today's game, and see where we can improve.

DH: Theo Babineaux refused to talk to me after the game, and Alf Jorgensen had left the stadium by before I had a chance to speak with him.

Not all the news is bad for Huguenots fans. They ranked second in Group C behind the Bavin Pumas in most goals scored, fewest goals scored by an opponent, and goal differential.

My grandfather, the man who turned me into a gridiron football fan, once said that "The true measure of a team isn't how they handle a win, but how they bounce back from a loss." We'll see how the Huguenots bounce back from THIS loss on Matchday 3. At the Baptism of Iron, I'm David Handy for Acadianne Cable Sports.

F1-Insanity Sports News
"Step onto the gridiron"

Acadianne 6-20 F1-Insanity
The F1-Insanity Mulcaheys struck back after an opening day loss and defeated the Acadianne Huguenots 20-6 in a defensive game. The Huguenots had come into this game with a 1-0 record after a first day victory against Konstantia.
The Insanity defense showed up for work this time as they held Acadienne to just two field goals, head coach Sean Massey explained in the post game press conference that he had chosen an agressive defense with lots of blitzes to try and limit the opponent's scoring opportunities, which seems to have worked according to plan.

The absolute highlight of the game, from the perspective of the Mulcaheys, was a 31 yard 3rd quarter touchdown run by QB Damon Mable, after a double pass fake. It seemed that the defense failed to see that Mable still held the ball after the two fake passes. It was one of two times the Insanity offense managed to breach the Huguenots defense and reach the endzone. Two field goals from kicker WM Muscato gave the Mulcaheys a 20-6 victory.

As the national champions of F1-Insanity, the Mulcaheys were chosen to be F1-Insanity's first representatives in international gridiron and so far have had mixed results. All eyes are on the next game which will be key in deciding whether our team can challenge for winning the group.

Head coach Massey knows that team owner Anthony Mulcahey has demanded his team not finish with a losing record, or he will lose his job.
