Official Visitor's Guide - International Baseball Slam V
The Somewhat-Socialist States of
NEW WOLFOPOLIS

New Wolfopolis is a fairly large and growing nation, located in the region of Esportiva. If you are anywhere else besides Esportiva, it would be best to fly in, and if you're flying in, you'll go through Lupinia International Airport in Lupinia, which is the closest airport to all of the cities where the games are taking place. New Wolfopolis's national language is English. If your team doesn't speak English, you are free to bring translators or if you don't have any, we are happy to provide them, as not all of the locals speak all languages. There are plenty of independent hotels in every city, so your team will have plenty of choices of where to stay. You'll be able to eat and drink at any of our fine restaurants, though alcohol is illegal in New Wolfopolis. Our ginger ale is some of the finest in the entire multiverse, so keep that in mind. While we're on the topic of law, the only laws that are really different from the norm is that guns, alcohol, and smoking are banned. The enforcement on international guests is a bit lax, especially on alcohol and smoking laws, but laws will be enforced for crimes such as murder. If you're planning on practicing religion while in the country, you might have a tough time, as many Wolfopian citizens are atheist, about 85% of the population. There are some various places of worship in larger cities, and almost all religions are represented with some sort of chapel in Lupinia. Wolfopian citizens are mostly very friendly, by and large. Return friendly gestures, accept favors, though the youth crime rate is rather high, so keep that in mind. If anything happens to you during your stay, our socialized health care system will cover you free of charge, save for expensive procedures such as heart surgery. National hospitals are located in every city with at least 1,000 citizens, which includes all cities with Kronum World Cup matches. Most civil rights, like freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, etc. are permitted in New Wolfopolis, as our civil rights are held sacrosanct.

Lupinia
Lupinia is the capital of New Wolfopolis, located in between New Iowa and New California in the New America, or north-central, region. It's the most popular tourist city in New Wolfopolis, as well as the most populated. Things for tourists include Lupinia Pavilion, where all national home games are played, as well as New Wolfopolis University, the only university in Lupinia. You can admire the fine architecture, take a stroll through many parks, visit the national zoo, and so much more.

Louviere Telecommunications Ballpark @ Lupinia Pavilion, Capacity 45,159

Games Played: Group D, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals

Aux Eveques
Aux Eveques is the second-largest city in the nation, and the capital of New Iowa. Aux Eveques was a nice little university town that has grown to become a nice big university city. It has retained that feeling, though, with much of the city's politics focusing on the university, as well as many alumni staying.

University of New Iowa Dome (UNI-Dome, pronounced you-knee-dome), Capacity 20,000

Games Played: Group E

Fenstermacher
Fenstermacher is the capital of Ledzuwe, in the Southwest region. Not a large town, but big for the state of Ledzuwe. Fenstermacher is much hotter than states north of it, where the other two games are being played. Fenstermacher citizens love their music, though, and there will always be some sort of street band playing, and big-name artists routinely stop in Fenstermacher. The best band, though, is the hometown jazz combo, the Fenstermacher Four, who play every Friday night downtown at The Hub. They're planning on a post-game concert after the last IBS game at Brannigan.

Games Played: Group F

We hope you enjoy your stay in New Wolfopolis!

OOC NOTE: GROUP STAGE RP CUTOFFS FOR ALL & RO12 CUTOFFS WILL BE @ 6:00 PM EST EXCEPT ON THURSDAY WHICH WILL BE CONSIDERABLY LATER

IC INFORMATION:

Oakbrook and Calvarie is a beautiful subnation located in the northern portion of Atlantian Oceania. The protectorate was put under the control of Vettrera after an economic depression and subsequent political unrest ruined their ability to operate independently. Today however, the subnation is on the rebound and is showing burgeoning growth. The protectorate experiences temperate weather, and holds a population of 56 million. Though the subnation has yet to be recognized for its sporting prowess, many of Vettrera's baseball and hockey players (and to a lesser extent, soccer) originate from this land. And the subnation's population supports their sports teams in full force, though they don't have many This event will be Oakbrook & Calvarie's first chance on the international scale, and will be representative of their growth. From the beautiful woodlands to the magnificent cities, Oakbrook and Calvarie is the perfect "risen from its ashes" story.

For visitors, it is important to note that Oakbrook and Calvarie will be awarding full immunity outside of CLASS A Punishments. These include murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, vehicular homicide, conspiracy to commit murder, indirect murder (hiring a hitman), drunk driving resulting in casualties. For more information on CLASS A punishments, please contact PUSH representative Thomas Harding, or contact the manager of the Protectorate Baseball League (and overseer for this tournament) Justin Calgary.

All groups playing in Oakbrook and Calvarie will be competing in King's Grove, the capital city. King's Grove is located in between the two main sections of the nation (Oakbrook, and well Calvarie). Group A will be competing at the stadium of King's Grove University (SwordCity), Group B will be competing at the stadium of the professional PBL team the King's Grove Giants (Motley Field), and Group C will be playing in the stadium for Hawthorne University (The Hilltop). The stadium capacities are 30,000 |45,000 | 33,000 respectively. PUSH will guarantee 75% capacity or higher for these games.

Pictures of the stadiums can be seen below.

Notes

Samurai Taiyou is a defensive-minded team which is built around pitching and defense. The pitching staff is composed primarily of finesse pitchers who get batters out with an array of breaking pitches. Taiyouese baseball heavily emphasizes pitches such as the knuckleball and the eephus, which most pitchers can throw in addition to the usual curveballs, sliders, splitters and fastballs. A Taiyouese pitcher is expected to develop a large repertoire of pitches and leave hitters constantly guessing at what pitch he will throw next. Defense is heavily emphasized in Taiyouese baseball. Professional teams in Taiyou look for players who are fundamentally sound and play good defense. Players that struggle defensively usually don't receive any offers to play professionally in Taiyou. Instead, they sign with teams in the Free Republics and will only be seen on TV in their homeland if their team makes it to the World Series, the domestic championship for the Free Republics and colonies. As a result, power is de-emphasized in Taiyouese baseball. Instead of hitting home runs, players focus on making contact and getting on base. Taiyouese hitters are taught to be aggressive and make contact. There is also an emphasis on speed and athleticism at most positions. Numbers are not used in Taiyouese baseball, as they are seen as an unnecessary elevation of the individual above the team.

Stadium:

All games will be played at the Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium, which is designed for baseball and was recently expanded to seat 12,000 when Gregoryisgodistan hosted the IBS. These seats have now been made permanent.

RP:

Choose my Lineup No - follow what was posted.
Choose my Runscorers Yes
RP Injuries Yes, one per game.
Godmod Injuries Yes, but note the above restriction.
Follow my Rotation: Yes
Eject my players: Yes, one per game unless you eject a commensurate number of yours. For instance, you can eject three of my players if you eject two of yours. This includes coaches, who can be ejected but count towards the limit. An exception is that you can eject both my manager and my pitcher for throwing at a batter after a warning (as the rules say should happen) and this counts as one ejection.
Godmod other events: Yes, do anything except kill Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state and official deity. Failed assassinations and fake assassinations using prop heads are fine. However, expect reciprocation. If you kill one of my players, that's fine, but I'm going to kill one of yours. If you don't TG me first to ask which one I'd be ok with killing, I won't TG you first, I'll just kill one, though if you kill a bench player I would kill one of your bench players, not a starter. I will do this WITHOUT CHECKING YOUR RP PERMISSIONS because it is far too complicated to figure out whether we'd both be in violation of each other's RP permissions or whether you made an exception, meaning we're both fine.
Other: If you do an RP involving my country, but do not mention it by name ("Gregoryisgodistan" without any formatting in the middle of the word such as striking "isgod" to make Gregoryisgodistan) TG me to give me a heads up. You do not need to wait for permission, and there is a chance I won't bother to reply. I frequently search for mentions of my nation so I can reply to RP's, but if you don't mention it by name, I can't do that. If for whatever IC reason you refer to my country by some other name (Gregoryisgodistan, Gregoryistan, Gregoryisnotgodistan, "that country with a name so blasphemous I cannot speak it" etc.) that is fine but either mention my country by name in an OOC note or TG me.
Use DH at home: Yes. But we're using official MLB rules, meaning if you have a starting pitcher who is a good hitter, you may bat him instead of a DH, but then you lose your right to a DH for the remainder of the game even if you go to the bullpen.

Llamaland Tigers Roster

Postby Super-Llamaland » Sun Apr 20, 2014 9:41 am

Llamaland Tigers: IBS V Roster

Rosters: Image

Want your Epic Jerseys? Check out Vulpine Sportif, uniform-maker of the WBC 28 Champions. Kaplewof's great t-ah, whaddaya mean they don't make jerseys?

Stadium: Tyler Rocke Stadium in downtown New Llama, capital of Super-Llamaland. Tyler Rocke Stadium is the official stadium for Super-Llamaland's home games in WBC28 as Super-Llamaland National Athletics Complex is built.

After three straight failed attempts to qualify to the knockout rounds and WBC 26 and 27 spent without making it past the Ro16, some writers called WBC 28 a "statement classic" for the Tigers. Would they go the way of legends like Newmanistan and Zwangzug, or would they fail to ever go further like the Serbian Empire?

They won it all on a tenth-inning, walk-off home run by Jake Earnest. After a miserable IBS IV, though, they returned to the playoffs, eager to prove their number-two ranking and championship wasn't a fluke. They battled through the likes of Cassadaigua, Ko-oren, and Saintland, then took the Royal Barangay to a fifth game that would decide history, championships, and the world number one.

We lost. It's time for a comeback. LET'S GO TIGERS IBS V!

Oh, and right, RP Permissions and StyleMod:

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: No
RP injuries to my players: Yes
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, match my ejected players with yours
Godmod other events: Yes, TG me before hand
Use DH at home: No
Style Mod: +3

Starting Lineup (Danks, Mills, Moreno, and Camden are lefty)

1. SS Aaron Baxter- Age 21, #13 (also plays 2B): Power-hitting shortstop compares favorably to Troy Tulowitzki, 30-30 threat, average needs work, injury-prone and defensively a zero. Still could be a great. If we keep pumping out great players, we may run out of two-digit numbers that aren't retired.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 34, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. RF Jake Earnest, Age 26, #30 (LF or CF): A do-it-all outfielder with all five tools. A real phenom, maybe better than Trevor Matthews, his bench counter-part. Replacing fan favorite Chris Harder in the past Classic, he exploded for 24 RBIs to seal his spot in lead.

4. LF, Trevor Matthews, Age 28, #18: A young outfielder with world class talent and a switch hitting bat. Matthews' swing is among the purest in the nation, but the team is unsure of his abilities to clean up.

5. 3B Peter Camden, Age 28, #8: Similar to RL Manny Machado, a budding star with profound athleticism and stunning defense. He is an established contact hitter and is some power away from being a true all-time great.

6. C Michael Trabajen, Age 19, #3: Yay for youth movement! Trabajen is a .340-potential hitter who is spending time on the IBS roster to work on managing professional pitchers. The Yadier Molina-esque catcher may not be on the WBC 30 roster despite his extremely strong potential.

7. CF Brett Rochester- Age 33, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop.

8. 1B Kevin Cassini- Age 32, #9: Cassini is a defensively-oriented first baseman who hits .290 on a regular basis and is easily a top defender on this team and even in the world, but for a first baseman, hitting less homers than Roger Harkless in 2013 (14) isn't cool. He's clutch, though. We'll give him that.

9. DH (If needed) James Baynor - Age 24, #57: The end of the Keith Dawson era! Dawson was the first youth talent on the team, but a few injuries and a .230 domestic average last season doomed him to the B-team. Baynor spotlights as a catcher but sucks at it.

BENCH

Roger Harkless, OF, #19, 23: Part of Super-Llamaland's youth movement. A wiry outfielder with good contact and speed. Power is starting to develop: he hit sixteen home runs last year, although his average dropped to .277. After a defining WBC 29 where he hit a few extra-basers, Harkless may evolve into more of a power-hitting outfielder.

Stephen Rustic, IF, #33, 18: Stephen Rustic is a phenomenal U-18 player. He was in seventh grade when the Tigers won WBC 28, and his high-batting average, high-speed profile fits more into the shortstop stereotype than Aaron Baxter.

Tim Bryant, IF, #29, 20: Finally, another player named Tim on the team! Hopefully this one hits better, and Tim Bryant is going straight to the pros next season. That's right, he's worked out a deal with number-nine draft picker Baseball Nikcoro to get drafted and go straight to the big leagues. That's how good his offense is at second, although he could work on D. And attitude.

OF Jake Addams, #99, 36: Displaced by the youth movement and Trevor Matthews, Addams has average, speed, and defense in high quantities.

Manager- Chris Evans, 51
Hitting Coach- Steve Mays, 63
1B Coach- Nick Horry, 50
3B Coach- Stan Evans, 72
PITCHING COACH- Thomas Yaft, 48
BULLPEN COACH- Arismendy Sanches, 37
BULLPEN CATCHERS- Don George, 42, and Jack Aaron, 51.

The Tigers are the number-two ranked WBC team in the world and are looking for more hardware.

PITCHING

Starters

L A.J. Rondout- 25, #23: Mid-nineties fastball goes with a deadly slurve and an improving changeup. Rondout's nasty "stuff" and his mellow personality clash, but he's a great teammate and will compete with Drew Gilson, Griffin Bailey, and Kyle Francis for the title of "The Next Evan Masorka". Now in the ace spot, Rondout needs to step up to Masorka's prodigious shadow. Can he?

L Griffin Bailey- 26, #31: Friends and former teammate in college of Rondout, Bailey and Rondout were drafted one-two in the 2012 draft (Kyle Francis was third. Andrew Gilson was drafted first in 2013.) Bailey features an insane curveball in the mid-80s, along with three fastballs: sinker, 2-seam, 4-seam, all in the low-90s. Bailey kills with precision and should be an underrated player at the WBC.

R Kyle Francis- #29, 26- A possible Leo Davis in the future. 96-mph fastballs without legal drinking age is a thing rarely found, and his slider is top-notch. Once he gets his change going, he'll be unstoppable.

R Drew Gilson Jr. - 22, #49: #Drew49, the original phenom, has graduated from his high-octane relief post to join the starting corps behind the dangerous triumvirate of Rondout, Bailey, and Francis. A live arm, 99-mph fastballs, and an amazing slider made him the youngest starting pitcher MVP in Llamanean history with his 2013 season (19-3, 2.56 ERA, 225 K).

RELIEF

Long Relief: Righty Aaron Raymond (#53, 33): A tough fall after his 4.72 ERA season last year in the LBL, but Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 34, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Kenny Oberweis/R Alex Carson- Middle Relievers
Oberweis- #55, 20: A U-21 star, Oberweis has a fastball that tops out at 102. His slider and sinker are improving by the day and he could be closer by the time everything's done.
Carson- 33, #59: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Tomas Reynolds/R Nick Bowden /L Tyler Brennaman- setup men

Reynolds- #52, 27: A star from the U-18 team has arrived with his blazing 96-mph fastballs and a penchant for shoulder injuries.

Bowden- #43, 36: A former star closer, Bowden underperformed at IBS IV and WBC 28's playoffs. He can still bring the mid-nineties heat, but surprisingly, his control of his out-pitch splitter has dwindled. Is this the end for Nick Bowden? If so, #43 could become retired.

Brennaman- #71, 20: Youth movement FTW! Brennaman is a unique pitcher in the regard that he throws overhand. His strange arsenal, which has lead bored and drunk sportswriters across the world to dub his mixture of pitches "Brennastein", includes a mid-80s two-seamer, a 12-6 curveball, a circle change, a small Phillips screwdriver, and an eephus.

Closer: Bobby Fritz, #69, 24

The right-handed ex-setup man, Fritz's low-90s fastball, dominant curveball, and pinpoint accuracy should tide him well as he becomes the third person to officially get the job.

The list of Retired Tigers so far:
3B Alex Cameron (#7)
SS Darren Bradley (#15)
SP Evan Masorka (#43)

Take Notes! :p
When Do We Use Our Four Jerseys?
The Home jersey is usually used at home, and the Away jersey on the road. You probably knew that, but you're wondering about those fabulous green-and-yellow things NSI made for me.
The Alt 1 jersey is used at home when the starting pitcher feels like it. Detailed stats say that Kyle Francis is mostly likely to make the team wear them, but even he only does it 5% of the time.
The Alt 2 jersey is used on the road when the starting pitcher feels like it.
With the appointment of team captain Bryant Moreno, the captain has an override button, so if Moreno's not in the mood for green jerseys, he can tell the starting pitcher not to do it.

The Gregoryisgodistan Sports Network is offering an IBS Tournament Challenge. If you correctly predict the order of finish of each group, and each knockout stage series correctly, including order, you win 1 trillion greggygodbcks. Regardless, the best picker receives 100,000 greggygodbucks. Some people have rather unusual strategies. Let's take a look at a few of those.

Mascot Death Fight:

Gruelmaker I81289PA is predicting which team mascots (nicknames) would win in a fight to the death. Let's take a look at his picks.

In Group A, the Bears of Oreanna finish first, followed by the Wolfpack of New Wolfopolis. Both advance. The Hawks of Alparia finish third followed by the Vaporeons of Northern Sunrise Islands because they're kind of lame.

In Group B, the Maroon Lions of New North Aqmuland take first place, and the Krashers of Sacheyena crash the Bat Slaves' party to take second. Gregoryisgodistan comes in third and Kazamatsuri comes in fourth since nobody knows what their nickname means.

Group C is a weak group for death fights. The Samurai of Noburu Taiyou take first, followed by the Meerkats of Stimpsk since at least people know what that is. The Breakers take third by breaking the Indios of Sangti.

Group D is the Super-Llamaland Tigers, followed by the Mosktopia Blue Dogs, the Jeckland Spuds, and the Menukten Raindroads since that isn't a real thing.

In Group E, the Celter Tigers win, followed by the Imota Sunwings. The Hicana Mist blows in the Southern Breeze and loses, finishing in fourth.

Group F is Lions of Nova Anglicana, followed by Warriors of Hamamatsu and Flames of Darvale. Independents finish last since that's stupid.

The top four first place finishers get byes. Those are the Lions, the Maroon Lions, the Tigers, and the other Tigers. Super-Llamaland wins a coin flip to beat Celter for third. Meanwhile, the Bears finish fifth, followed by the Samurai. The Bears face the worst 12th place team, the Meerkats,a and win easily, sweeping the series. The Samurai face the 11 seed Blue Dogs but get attacked and bitten, losing in a three-game series shock. Then we have The Mamamatsu Warriors easily beating the Imota Sunwings in the 7-10 matchup, sweeping the series, and the Wolfpack beat the Krashers in a sweep.

This means that (OOC: assuming no reseeding) New Wolfopolis faces Nova Anglicana, with the winner facing the winner of Oreanna and Celter. Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the bracket, Mosktopia faces Super-Llamaland and Mamamatsu faces New North Aqmuland. At this point, he picked the Lions, Tigers, other Tigers, and Maroon Lions. He had the Lions and Maroon Lions face in the finals, with the Lions winning. It got rather boring after the group stage. All series were sweeps by that point. How lame. But he picked Nova Anglicana. He had Celter winning the third place series in a sweep by coin flip.

Goat the Ferret:

Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Carl Wingsley has a pet ferret named Goat. He put out two chocolate ferret treats, one on the flag of each country playing in the game, and whichever treat Goat picked up first was the winner of that game. He repeated for all group stage games, breaking ties in the standings as necessary, then moved onto the knockout stage. Here is how he picked the group stage.

In Group A, he had Northern Sunrise Islands winning, followed by Oreanna, Alparia, and New Wolfopolis. In Group B, he had New North Aqmuland, Gregoryisgodistan, Kazamatsuri, and Sacheyena. In Group C, Goat/Carl picked Noburu Taiyou, Tidal Wake, Sangti, and Stimpsk. In Group D, the Ferret/Human team picked Menukten, Super-Llamaland, Jeckland, and Mosktopia. In Group E, they had Hicana, Celter, Esportivan South Pole, and Imota. In Group F, the ferret picked Darvale, Hamamatsu, Nova Anglicana, and Oakland and Calvarie.

Here are the seeds picked by Goat and his owner.

1. Northern Sunrise Islands
2. Menukten
3. Hicana
4. Darvale
5. Noburu Taiyou
6. New North Aqmuland
7. Gregoryisgodistan
8. Tidal Wake
9. Super-Llamaland
10. Celter
11. Hamamatsu
12. Oreanna

He then had the following picks for the knockout stage.

Oreanna over Noburu Taiyou in 3
Super-Llamaland over Tidal Wake in 2
Gregoryisgodistan over Celter in 2
New North Aqmuland over Hamamatsu in 2

Then in the quarterfinals (OOC: again assuming no reseeding):

Oreanna over Darvale in 2
Northern Sunrise Islands over Super-Llamaland in 3
Menukten over Gregoryisgodistan in 2
Hicana over New North Aqmuland in 3

Unfortunately, in addition to eating the chocolate ferret treat placed on the Oreanna flag for Game 2 of the quarterfinals, Goat ate the flag itself. Carl didn't have time to buy a new one before the deadline to submit picks, since they had to be imported from overseas. Sale was illegal in Gregoryisgodistan. While as a government VIP, he could buy them legally, he still couldn't buy them in this country since nobody was selling them. So it would take a week for one to arrive and the deadline would pass. So he just decided to advance Northern Sunrise Islands to the finals by default in a two game sweep, and then have Oreanna lose in the third place series by default in a sweep to whoever they faced.

As for Menukten-Hicana, Goat predicted Hicana in 3.

In the Hicana-Northern Sunrise Islands final, Goat predicted the Vaporeons in four. There you have it.

IBS Preview

The fifth International Baseball Slam is on its way and Samurai Taiyou is on its way to Oakbrook and Calvarie to prove the quality of Taiyouese baseball. The IBS is the second most prestigious baseball tournament, second only to the World Baseball Classic. This is an important tournament for us. Ogasahara-Sama will have his team motivated to put on a strong performance in this tournament and leave a good impression, in advance of the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Group A consists of the New Wolfopolis Wolfpack, the Orennana Bears, the Northern Sunrise Islands Vaporeons and the Alparia Hawks. The Wolfpack are the most experienced nation in this group and are our pick to win the group. Of their opponents, the Vaporeons are the only ones with previous experience at an international level. We know very little about Orennana or Alparia, making it difficult to pick for second place.

Group B contains the Gregoryisgodistan Bat Slaves, champions of the last 3 editions of the International Baseball Slam. Lord Almighty Gregory-"Sensei" will have his Bat Slaves ready to defend their championships. Their lives may even depend upon it, so we have to pick them to finish first. Their opponents are the New North Aqmuland Maroon Lions, Sachevenya Krashers and Kazamatsuri Gaia no Ookami. While the Maroon Lions are the only one among them with previous baseball experience, we believe that Kazamatsuri will advance out of this group.

For the moment, we will skip over Group C and focus our attention on Group D, which features 2 teams that have entered previous editions of the IBS. This includes the Super-Llamaland Tigers, winners of the 28th WBC and finalists in the 29th WBC. It would be a surprise if they didn't win this group. The other ranked team in this group is the Jeckland Spuds, who made it to the Round of 20 in the last WBC. This group also includes the Mosktopia Blue Dogs and the Menukten Raindraods. The Blue Dogs finished 4th in the 28th WBC, which is why we are picking them to advance out of this group.

The ranked team in Group E is the Imota Sunwings. We think they have a good chance of winning this tournament, so they are our pick to win Group E. The other teams are the Hicana Mist, Esportivan South Pole Southern Breeze and the Celter Tigers. While Esportiva have proven their quality as a sports region, we are not familiar with the quality of baseball played at the South Pole of our region. We are also unfamiliar with Celter. We're going with Hicana here. They showed off their quality in the 29th WBC by taking the Royal Barangay to a third game.

The ranked team in Group F is the Nova Anglicana Lions. The Lions have repeatedly come close to winning international baseball tournaments, but have finished second, third or fourth on several occasions. They will advance out of this group. The other 3 teams in this group are the Hamamatsu Warriors, Darvale Flames and Oakbrook and Calvarie Independents. None of them have any previous experience at the international level. We are picking the Independents. They wouldn't have been picked to co-host the IBS if they weren't a potential formidable presence on the diamond.

Finally, we turn to Group C, which features Samurai Taiyou. Our opponents include the Sangti Indios, who are from the Royal Barangay, champions of the last WBC. Although they are unlikely to be as strong as the WBC champions, they will still be formidable opposition for us. The other 2 opponents for Samurai Taiyou are the Tidal Wake Breakers and the Stimpsk Meerkats. The Breakers previously competed in the 24th WBC, so they have experience. The Meerkats will be making their international baseball debut. We will not deign to pick the top 2 from this group.

The International Baseball Slam will consist of a 3 game group stage, followed by best-of 3 series for the Round of 12, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Third Place Round. The Finals will be best-of-5. The tournament takes place in New Wolfopolis and Oakbrook and Calvarie.

And now on OBC1, the news, with Richard Tesler.

Image

Tonight at 6, how the Chancellor's latest budget cuts affect quality of life in the poorest parts of the country; the continuing investigation into the disappearance of Orennana Airlines flight 176; and why one leading professor of socio-economy believes Maxtopia is the world's largest superpower. *opening credits*

First tonight, the Orennana Bears are gearing up for their first major international baseball tournament in the joint host country of Oakbrook and Calvarie. Their opponents in group A are the New Wolfopolis Wolfpack, who are co-hosting the tournament; The Northern Sunrise Island Vaporeons; and the Alparia Hawks. Over now to our sports correspondent Ellie Ravens in King's Grove. Ellie.

Yes, thank you Richard, and I'm here in King's Grove, the capital of Oakbrook and Calvarie, where the atmosphere is really starting to heat up ahead of tomorrow's opening matches. The first day's play sees the Bears taking on the Vaporeons, another newcomer to the International Baseball Slam. IBS V is set to be one of the best yet, as there are a whole host of newcomers vying for the title. In Orennana's group, returning team the Wolfpacks are set to lead the group going in to the round of 12, but who will join them in qualifying is anyone's guess. With me now is renowned pundit Jimmy Gregson. Jimmy, who do you think is likely to qualify?

"Well, as you said Ellie, it really is anyone's guess. The Bears do have some of the best players in the country, and their playing style has worked in their favour before. They've never played a match this big before - but then, nor have the other teams in group A. The Vaporeons have a strong team, but their play style may prove detrimental. From what I've seen, the Hawks haven't brought the best players, but if I know their coach then there'll definitely be some tactics there that play perfectly to their opponents weaknesses. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they qualify alongside the Wolfpacks."

Thanks for that analysis Jimmy. Well, as you can see, it really is anyone's game, and there are no certainties in this competition. But that's baseball - the best team on the day wins.

Ellie Ravens there, reporting from King's Grove. In other news...............

Nova Anglicana IBS V Preview

Allen Talos, Londinium Courier

The Lions, the second-most highly regarded team in this IBS in terms of history, return the same roster as they had in WBC 29 a few months before. Long veteran starters Elmer Sutton and Clark Boone, who retired from international competition, as well as always-dependable outfielder Austin Reeves and jovial closer Eddy Cavazos, have returned as special assistants. Youngsters Chris Keyes, Brad Bryan, Nate Freeman and Tony "Flick" Barnes made nice debuts and look to build on that in IBS V. WBC 29 was a relatively successful WBC for the Lions. After finishing 5-5 in the group stage, squeaking through to the playoffs despite some major struggles, they made it all the way to the semifinals, defeating Darmen 5-0 in a one-game playoff, defeating groupmate Alitaba in two games, edged former North American rivals Gregoryisgodistan in three games, before falling to eventual champs Sangti/The Royal Barangay. They then fell to Cassadaigua in two games to take fourth place and now await the next batch of world rankings to see what change might occur in their #7 ranking.

The Lions, after finishing in 3rd place at WBC 28, and 4th place in WBC 29, were eliminated in the Round of 16 in IBS IV, a tournament that saw the Lions stumble into the playoffs after a 3-0 start, and then lose in two games to newcomers Lzherusskia. What will be important for this team is bouncing back from a somewhat successful, somewhat disappointing WBC and doing some damage in a tournament they have historically had success in.

In the group, our Lions obviously have to be the favorite to advance as the #1 seed, but who will claim the second spot out of the group is a little bit more hazy. All three of the squads are new to the Slam. The new teams are the Hamamatsu Warriors, the Darvale Flames, and the co-hosts Oakbrook and Calvarie Independents. They are all unranked, so it's unlikely that they'll pose a serious threat to the Lions, but if this last WBC taught us anything, it's that chaos can and will occur in the group stage (especially when it's only a three-game stage). The Lions ought to qualify in New Wolfopolis, but who will finish second is anyone's guess. My guess? I'll take the co-hosts. The Independents will want to play their best and qualify as a matter of national pride.

Schedule

Match Day 1 - vs. Oakbrook and Calvarie in TBA, New Wolfopolis
Match Day 2 - vs. Hamamatsu in TBA, New Wolfopolis
Match Day 3 - vs. Darvale in TBA, New Wolfopolis

Nickname: Lions
Acronym: NA

Home Stadium: Archbishop Stadium in the Capital of Londinium (30,000)
(Image)

Starting Rotation (order as given)
RHP #17 Felix Murphy, 28 - has settled in at big-league level, nearly unhittable slurve
RHP #56 Kip Fischer, 34 - Fischer a power sinkerballer who pounds the zone, average secondary pitches
RHP #27 Justin Garcia, 29 - electric fastball comes in 4 and 2-seam varieties, along with developing slider, but struggles with command
LHP #36 Chris Keyes, 22 - features a 70 MPH, big, sweeping curve, spent rookie year working on control, but has great stuff, looks have "Keyes to my heart" signs common at games
LHP #40 Brad Bryan, 21 - tall, slim frame with long arms, hides ball very well, nasty slider, velocity average, but great pitching instincts for someone so young

Bullpen
LHP #44 Noah Hawkins, 32 - fastball tops out at 88, but makes up for it with tough cutter, slider, change, and curve, demoted to long relief, could see spot starts
LHP #14 Kyle Pauley, 28 - setup man, can get lefties and righties with fastball/curve/changeup
RHP #32 André Leclerc, 30 - Quebecois throws a tough frisbee slider from a sidearm slot, death to righties
RHP #37 Bill McCaffrey, 38 - big 12-6 curve is his main weapon, impeccable control
RHP #43 Royal Barbour, 32 - touches 95 with the fastball, great stuff but can lose it if he doesn't get the calls
LHP #50 Ellis Rhodes, 33 - LOOGY (Left-handed One Out Guy) has tricky 2-seam, circle change, bad platoon splits
RHP #28 Nate Freeman, 23 - former top prospect has had an inconsistent couple of years at big-league level, could see spot start, but devastating fastball/curve/change plays well in late innings
RHP #23 Trent Burkhardt, 27 - wild card of the staff, has been known to hit triple digits, but the next one could be at your head (by accident)
RHP #25 Jamey Conroy, 26 - graduated to national-team closer, led league in saves a year ago, hard, nasty 2-seamer from a low 3/4 slot

C #2 Josh Heckman (R/R), 28 - Heckman has great instincts behind the plate and is a tough man to strike out, is now familiar with the team, can handle any staff in the league impeccably
C #18 Raleigh Hightower (L/R), 35 - Hightower, while not a great hitter, has a little pop, but his main value comes from his blocking skills and strong arm
C #29 Russ Parsons, (R/R), 37 - Parsons is a veteran who has won six Gold Gloves in the NABL, bat speed has slowed, but a dangerous hitter nonetheless

1B #22 Kareem Al-Aniz (L/R), 31 - this Sunni Muslim takes Fridays off to attend prayers, big black man with a big black beard and big black bat, mashes HRs, including a league-record 501-ft bomb, club relies on him for power
CI #34 Philip “Phil” Carter (R/R), 32 - this converted 1B now plays 3B, features defensive versatility with a strong arm and good glove, gap-to-gap power rather than long-ball power
3B #3 Brice Napier (R/R), 33 - Napier has a serious strikeout problem, but if he gets a hold of one, look out
2B #5 Chris Fletcher (S/R), 29 - Fletcher is a 15/15 guy with great range at 2B, not very patient though
SS #6 Jarrod Novak (R/R), 28 - after playing pretty well in last campaign, looks to build on his success, 20/20 guy with good arm and great range,
MI #10 Darius Boudreaux (S/R), 27 - Boudreaux is a wizard at either MI slot, makes the tough plays look easy, bat still in development

OF #16 Martín Torres (S/R), 33 - Torres is a speed merchant and a defensive whiz even at 33, .300 hitter but no power, aggressive on basepaths
OF #45 Brooks Merriman (R/R), 30 - Merriman continued his production and is now an established big leaguer, extremely hard worker
OF #13 Teddy Cunningham (R/L), 26 - Cunningham can play any OF position and play it well, below-average arm, hit tool still in development, good speed
OF #19 Roman Jennings (R/R), 34 - former MVP, 30/15 guy with .320 average, if he has a weakness, it's the high fastball, but he just might get on top of it, team needs him to hit in order to succeed
OF #24 Tony "Flick" Barnes (R/R), 24 - Barnes takes over in right for Austin Reeves, has good power and a sweet swing, not bad on basepaths or in the field

Graig Lowman #60 (Manager)

Dante Woodward #1 (Hitting Coach)

Charley Battaglia #47 (Pitching Coach)

Claude Corbett #9 (1st Base Coach)

New Wolfopolis Wolfpack - National Baseball Team
Trigramme: NWW
Style Modifier: -1
Captain: Katsunori Matsuoka

New Wolfopolis's last tournament was World Baseball Classic 29, where the Wolfpack won their group and advanced to the round of 16, where they beat Equestrian States. After their win over the ponies, however, they lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions, the Royal Barangay Indios. Overall, the Classic was a pretty successful one. New Wolfopolis is once again co-hosting this tournament, the second time they have done so. The first, in their debut edition with Super-Llamaland. The Wolfpack look to have a more successful IBS this time, as they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last time around. Many people around the multiverse say they are one of the few teams that could take down Gregoryisgodistan, who has one the past three Slams, but they'll have to get past a tough group first. Their main threat is Northern Sunrise Islands, whose teams have done quite well in other sports, but are untested in baseball. Then there are two unknowns, Orennana and Alparia. Leading the team on offense is speedster captain Katsunori Matsuoka, along with power hitters Maurice Martinez and Andre Harding. On the mound, ace Leo Jacobson is the headliner, but there's always Ramon Atkins, who had the first Wolfpack no-hitter against Ko-oren in the last slam. The team will, beginning with this Slam and continuing through the next classic, be wearing patches to mourn the death of former starting pitcher Allen Marsh, who was murdered during International Baseball Slam IV in Gregoryisgodistan.Written by Javier Johnson, International Sports Correspondent, Lupinia Tribune

About Mosktopia Baseball
Baseball is Mosktopia's national sport; the Mosktopian National Baseball League (MNBL) boasts 12 teams out of major cities across Mosktopia. At the end of the MNBL season, each team nominates three batters and two pitchers for the National Team. The MNBL Board of Commissioners elects a National Team Manager who is responsible for picking his staff, holding National Team camp, and ultimately picking the National Team from among the nominated players.

Ordinarily, Mosktopia only competes internationally in the World Baseball Classic. Team management has already selected the starting 8 for that competition, as well as the back-up catcher, three starting pitchers, and the team's closer. Those players are currently in training camp in Mosktopia. The remaining National Team hopefuls will participate in the International Baseball Slam, with the best and brightest earning a roster spot for the upcoming WBC.

Jordan Porter - Team Manager - The 43-year-old former catcher and current Wolfienburg Bay Lobsters manager has been selected as this cycle's National Team Manager. During his illustrious thirteen-year career as a player, Porter caught for four different teams, including the Lobsters, the Montclair Bulls, the Glendale Hedgehogs, and the Paterson Waterbucks. Though not a particularly strong hitter in his time, Porter was a four-time national defensive player of the year and he is widely considered one of the best defensive players of his era. Most critics expect his defensive genius to display prominently in his team's performance.

Porter's Staff:
  • Marshall Phillips - Hitting Coach
  • Kent Neal - Assistant Hitting Coach
  • Cody Holland - Pitching Coach
  • Guillermo Butler - First Base Coach
  • Luis Glover - Third Base Coach
  • Eduard O'Brien - Bench Coach
  • Ralph Schwartz - Bullpen Coach
  • Christian Myers - Bullpen Catcher
  • Ron Hughes - Assistant Bullpen Catcher

1. Maurice Murphy - Center Field - Widely expected to be the Blue Dogs' fourth outfielder for the next WBC, Murphy has outstanding speed, good arm strength, and can play well in any outfield position. A typical lead-off man, Murphy is solid contact hitter and a terrific base runner.

2. Randy Mckinney - First Base - Standing 6'5" and weighing 219, the youngster Mckinney is a giant on the field. A strong contact hitter, Mckinney managed a very strong on-base percentage last season. He still struggles to hit for power, but that skill is expected to develop as he gets more experience.

3. Roosevelt Harmon - Catcher - Batting third for the Blue Dogs, Harmon is one of the most skillful contact hitters in Mosktopia. Since the Blue Dogs already have two catchers on the WBC team, Harmon doesn't expect to progress past the IBS. He's just thrilled to be part of the team.

4. Jeffrey Burgess - Third Base - A relatively short, stout man, Burgess seems an obvious choice to bat clean-up. Although his speed leaves much to be desired, Burgess's slugging and hitting stats are both well above average. As a defender, he's second to none: making crisp reads and throwing with accuracy and power.

5. Cory Lopez - Right Field - A tall, strong slugger, Lopez would be a force at just about any position. Lopez fully expects to impress team management and earn a spot on the WBC team.

6. Ricardo Gonzales - Left Field - A solid defender with a decent batting average, Gonzales lends a burst of speed to anchor the heart of the Blue Dog's order.

7. Tyler Bass - Second Base - A prize defender, Bass is a superb second baseman who is also a very quick base runner.

8. Derrick Holmes - Short Stop - Another superb fielder, Holmes boasts a decent batting average; especially for a player who made the team mostly because of his defensive prowress.

9. Pitcher/Designated hitter - Mosktopian rules do not permit a DH at home. When playing on the road against a team that does use a DH, Bernard Wagner will bat 4th between Roosevelt Harmon and Jeffrey Burgess.

Milton Abbott - Catcher - Abbott is a fine catcher who is quite content to support the team by spelling Roosevelt Harmon.

Tommy Houston - Infield - A solid infielder who normally plays the corners, Houston is also one of the first pinch hitters the Blue Dogs will turn to.

George Mitchell - Infield - Another corner infielder, Mitchell is ordinarily the team's third pinch hitter. He's also the most likely to come into the game as a substitute corner in non-batting substitutions.

Jeffery Young - Infield - A strong middle infielder, Young is also the team's go-to pinch runner.

Clinton Davis - Infield - Clint is probably the best liked man on the team, even if he's not the best athlete.

Bernard Wagner - Outfield - A tall, speedy man with a decent eye for hitting, Wagner plays as the first substitute outfielder and designated hitter (when playing away). When he's not playing DH, he's the first pinch hitter the team will go to.

Dave Robertson - Outfield - On the team primarily for his wide fielding range, the Blue Dogs really hope they are not in a position where Robertson has to hit to win the game. He does make a good pinch runner, though.

Guadalupe Castillo - Outfield - Another good defender, Castillo's hitting skills are a work in progress. He'll likely improve with time, but for now his value is mostly as a fielder.

1. Anthony Craig - The Blue Dog's number one pitcher going into the IBS, Craig is hopeful that he can keep his 2.85 ERA through the Slam and earn a spot on the WBC roster.

2. Jimmy Brady - Widely considered the team's "other" ace, Brady is a fantastic pitcher with a mean fastball. He posted a 1-hit shutout last season, a testament to his great stamina.

3. Marc Miles - Miles is a relief pitcher who just recently impressed management enough to make him a starter. His speed and control are great but there is some question of whether he has the chops to pitch late into a game.

4. Lu Wong - Anchoring the starting line-up is Wong. What he lacks in heat on his fastball, Wong more than makes up for in the trickiness of his curve.

Derek Ball - Closer - Ball is a prototypical closer. In a single inning he can be absolutely dominant, as evidenced by his average of 12.9 strikeouts per 9 innings. His fastball routinely tops 100 miles per hour.

Gabriel Carr - Set-up Closer - Most often appearing in the late-7th and 8th innings, Carr takes his role as a set-up man very seriously. A decent closer in his own right, Carr will spell Derek Ball when the closer needs a night off.

Marcos Rivera - Reliever/Set-up Closer - The team's other set-up man is Rivera, who will appear in the 7th if he is needed. He is also called in to spell Carr if he or Ball is having a night-off (or, heaven forbid, an off-night).

Earl Norris - Reliever - Norris is a classy reliever who is most often seen as a change of pace man if a starter gets in trouble early. His slippery curve ball can give batters fits and, hopefully, right a sinking ship.

Dwight Brown - Reliever - Though arguably the weakest pitcher on the team, Brown is still a solid ball player. He is sometimes called in as a lefty specialist due to his strangely high success rate against lefties.

*Coming Soon*

Home games are played at Walton Garris Memorial Park, a beautiful park in the capital city of Wolfienburg Bay. The stadium seats 43,915 people and has standing room for about 1,500 more. Weather can be rainy in the late spring and late autumn, but the skies are mostly clear and bright. Storms are infrequent but do occur, and sometimes include lightening and thunder. The park can get very windy near sundown.

Stimpsk City Gazette
IBS V Preview

Richard Gordon, Sports Writer

The Meerkats will be making their international baseball debut at the fifth International Baseball Slam. However, looking at the players and coaching staff as they finish their final preparations for the IBS, there is a sense of composure that would seem out of place among a group of men who have not played a game outside of their home country.

Overseeing the Stimpsk national team is first-year skipper Clarence Batemen, a former catcher for the Hartford Thunder of the Stimpsk Baseball League. "Our guys have been putting everything they have into making sure they are fully prepared for the International Baseball Slam," says Batemam while watching a fielding drill. "We've seen some solid defense and starting pitching within the last couple of exhibition games. Our offense is also starting to click, especially with Hudson [Long] and Andre [Sanna] hitting back to back in the heart of the lineup."

Bateman has also been keeping a close eye on Driskoll Haenraats, a lanky southpaw who is slated to be the first starter for the Meerkats at the IBS. "Driskoll has a great fastball, and good command of his breaking pitches, especially his curveball. His pitching abilities, combined with his composure and tenacity on the mound, have made the rest of the guys in the bullpen look to him for leadership."

When asked about the Meerkats' group draw for the IBS, Bateman seemed very even keeled. "While we have not competed against the other teams before, I can't help but feel it will still be a challenging group. The Sangti Indios are the only ranked team in the group; their experience playing against other teams in international tournaments will make them a tough opponent to beat on the first day." Bateman was quick to point out that that was not a prediction for his team's defeat on the first match day. "I'm confident our guys will go out there, and give it their all while on the field. They understand that they are not playing only for themselves, and each other on the team, but for the whole Commonwealth."

Starting Lineup

Akane Isshiki: A speedy and surprisingly powerful rookie who has decent contact but sometimes makes bone-headed errors in the field. A wily base-stealer who isn't often caught.

Hayato Yagami: A solid veteran with all five tools, nerves of steel, and lightning reflexes; in other words, perfectly at home in the hot corner.

Saki Lilienthal: A capable outfielder with all five tools. Her only real weaknesses are her tendency to chase low and away and her quick temper.

Akio Homura: A veteran five tooler who's been with the squad since the beginning. Has a keen mind for exploiting gaps in the defense.

Kiyohiko Sakurai: The stereotypical slow but powerful first baseman. Some say his contact has fallen off in recent years, but he still has the legendary raw power that earned him the nickname "Breaker".

Senjirou Ushiromiya: Only an average fielder at best, his contact and power make him an ideal DH. In no-DH games, he finds use as a pinch hitter or backup first baseman.

Yuzuki Shimizu: A meticulous and methodical middle infielder with solid fielding, speed, and contact, but not a lot of power. Has an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball theory and rarely makes mistakes, but sometimes has a hard time thinking outside the book.

Chie Yakumo: A solid defensive catcher whose arm makes potential base stealers think twice about trying for that extra bag. Decent hitting power, but contact is poor.

Tsubasa Araragi: A fast outfielder with a magnet for a glove and a cannon for an arm. Contact and power are both below average.

Bench

Tomoe Kikuchi: The rigors of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood may not have hurt this middle infielder's speed, glove, or contact, but she hasn't appeared in a pro-level game in five seasons and critics doubt her mental readiness.

Ryouka Shimizu: Yuzuki Shimizu's twin sister has a similar skill set, but her impulsiveness means her performance in the field has been decent but very uneven. It is hoped that exposure to a higher level of competition will help her straighten up.

Yoshifumi Shameimaru: A veteran infielder with good speed and contact but not a lot of power. Will spend this campaign as a reserve in case the rookies falter.

Satoshi Houjou: A veteran outfielder who lacks offensive punch but has a good glove and a strong arm. Primarily a defensive reserve.

Sadaharu Takamori: A promising rookie with hints of all five tools. Good speed and contact make him an asset both at the plate and in the field.

Seiji Futaba: A rookie catcher who excels defensively but can't make contact to save his life. A big man with a decent amount of power, his hits have an annoying tendency to die at the warning track.

Starting Rotation

Eiji Miki: Despite a lethal four-seam fastball / slider / curveball / changeup arsenal and the experience to know how to use it, there are concerns that Imota's best ace might be losing some of his trademark heat. He's expressed hope that Imota will bring home a championship before he has to retire.

Makoto Kikuchi: Having settled in a productive four-seam fastball / slider / changeup routine, this rising star is seen as Imota's next top ace. Considered a solid choice for the number two slot.

Nozomi Itoshiki: Primarily relies on her four-seam fastball and slider. Has stabilized in recent years, but her curveball still needs a lot of development.

Sakuya Izayoi: This two-seam fireballer has added a competent slider to her repertoire since WBC 29, and her control is as good as ever.

Haruki Saegusa: A cheerful rookie off-speeder who relies mainly on his slider. His curveball still needs work.

Bullpen

Ouka Kamishiro: A young fireballer with a blazing four-seam fastball but still iffy control. Still has issues with runners on base.

Hiroshi Shinonome: A two-seam fastball / slider pitcher with a solid knowledge of baseball theory, but sometimes forgets to mix up his pitch placement. Excellent control.

Masayuki Minase: An off-speeder with a potent slider and a wicked curveball. Surprisingly good at the plate, with contact to rival a position player and decent power.

Himeko Yaegashi: A two-seam fastballer with excellent control and a good eye for pitch placement, who's also added a decent slider to her repertoire. However, she still insists on striking out every batter she faces, and as a result issues a lot of unintentional walks.

Naoto Shinonome: Hiroshi Shinonome's younger brother. A dependable off-speed pitcher whose curveball and slider give righties fits. Solid control.

Shinobu Tsukimura: Injuries since WBC 29 have hurt this former starter's endurance, but he's adapted swimmingly to the LOOGY role. His curveball and changeup have saved several slim leads from threatening southpaw sluggers.

Hikaru Shidou: A closer in the making. His slider and curveball generate a lot of strikeouts, but a careful batter can drive up his pitch count and draw a walk.

Makoto Kaname: Age may have taken some speed off his split-fingered fastball, but it's also brought his slider to the fore and hasn't hurt his strikeout numbers any. An experienced and stable closer who rarely makes mistakes.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No (I will announce any lineup changes in RP before the cutoff. You may make substitutions in-game as long as they're justified (don't have a defense oriented utility infielder pinch-hit for my cleanup hitter unless there's a very good reason, for instance).)
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes (for the most part, I'll follow my rotation. However, I may make changes to the rotation depending on the circumstances. I will always indicate who will start the next game in the RP immediately preceding that game. Avoid having relievers work more than two days in a row.)
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes. No deaths or permanent cripplings.
Godmod injuries to my players: See above.
Eject my players: No more than one more than the number of your players ejected.
Godmod other events: Weather related only
Use DH at home: No

The Imota Professional Baseball League (IPBL) Official Website: Your IBS V Headquarters!

Once More into the Breach (http://www.ipbl.im/ibs5/news/0323)

Once again, the time has come for the International Baseball Slam, now in its fifth edition, jointly hosted by New Wolfopolis and Oakbrook and Calvarie. Previously, Gregoryisgodistan beat Arana to three-peat to the surprise of absolutely no one, and our Sunwings took all three games but ultimately beat Lzherusskia for third place. Now, on the heels of a last in group 4-6 finish at WBC 29, we once again charge into the Slam.

Her Imperial Majesty has announced that effective this Slam, Imota would move from a four year cycle to a two year cycle, with the Slam and the WBC taking place in alternate years. Despite concerns from advisors that such a tight schedule would be hard on the nation’s infrastructure, HIM expressed confidence that the Culture Ministry’s Baseball Division, under the leadership of WBC 27 and 28 manager Ken Urofuchi, could continue to effectively operate despite such circumstances.

This year’s team sees a surprising number of new faces. Many prospects from the ill-fated NationStates Baseball League team have earned spots on the Sunwings, and many of Imota’s venerable veterans have moved on to other pursuits. Among the more surprising choices have been Tomoe Kikuchi (nee Lilienthal)’s return to baseball after five years, and Yoshifumi Shameimaru’s relegation to the bench. This will also be the first Sunwings team without Naoto Takamachi or Yasuhiro Chadani, those ever-present fixtures at the heart of the Sunwings batting order since the beginning.

This edition also sees a shortened group stage, with just three games. Imota has the advantage of playing two of those games as the home team. The first game will be as the home team against the newcomer Celter Tigers in Aux Eveques, New Wolfopolis. The second game pits the ‘Wings against the Hicana Mist, again as the home team. The final game of the group stage will be as the away team against the Esportivan South Pole Southern Breeze.

With no one else in our group ranked, advancing is not expected to be an issue. The shortened group stage does mean that every game has the potential to be a make or break one, so the team will need to be at their best right out of the gate. While we have very little information about the other teams in our group, we do know that with just seven ranked teams, at least five unranked teams will advance to the Round of Twelve, possible more if Lady Luck is feeling fickle.

In any case, the games are about to begin. Can the Sunwings improve on their third place finish last time? Will this be the year someone finally topples Gigistan? And will Imota ever advance in the World Baseball Classic? Only time will tell.

Go Sunwings!

IBS Preview
by Javier Johnson, International Sports Correspondent
johnsonj@lupiniatribune.nw

In an entirely unsurprising announcement today, the Wolfopian International Sports Commission announced that the number 29 would be retired on the baseball team in honor of the late Allen Marsh. Marsh was murdered during the fourth International Baseball Slam in Gregoryisgodistan. It was unsurprising due to the fact that his memorial patch had his last name on it, instead of "WOLFPACK," which is traditionally what players wear as their name plate.

They also announced that they would all be wearing "MARSH" on the back of all jerseys for their first game of the Slam, in Oakbrook and Calvarie against Alparia. They will be wearing their home jerseys for this occasion. The WISC hinted that they may be honoring Marsh in a similar fashion during the upcoming World Baseball Classic, but made no definitive comment regarding that.

The Wolfpack's IBS Group, played at King's Grove University in King's Grove, Oakbrook and Calvarie, includes four teams: The Wolfpack, The Orennana Bears, The Northern Sunrise Islands Vaporeons, and the Alparia Hawks. All of these teams are previously untested in baseball, and very many people expect the Wolfpack to win the group easily. However, any of these teams could come out as a dark horse, especially if the Wolfpack gets complacent and expects to win. Many expect the strong-looking, youthful team from Northern Sunrise Islands to take second and advance as well, though really, the rest of the group is up for grabs at this point.

Meanwhile, twelve teams are in New Wolfopolis for the other half of the Slam, as New Wolfopolis and Oakbrook and Calvarie are the co-hosts for the tournament. Venues include Louviere Telecommunications Ballpark @ Lupinia Pavilion in Lupinia, the UNI-Dome in Aux Eveques, and Brannigan Memorial Field in Fenstermacher. Some of the best teams you can see here include Super-Llamaland, winners of WBC 28, Nova Anglicana, who took third at WBC 28, and Imota, who has had mild success in both the WBC and the IBS.

This looks to be a promising and fun tournament, and we hope all citizens of New Wolfopolis can find some way to enjoy it, whether it's catching a game here, or watching the Wolfpack play.

Paradisia I
Maybe I just expected too much, maybe I'm just selfish, maybe I just am ignorant to the situation. But....I thought. I thought that immigration to Vettrera would mean something, I thought that immigration to Vettrera would mean a new start, greater opportunities, and infusion into a welcoming society. I thought wrong.

The immigration policy was simple enough, the application was straightforward, and there weren't many requirements. Hell, I was basically guaranteed approval into Vettrera on the spot. There was nothing for me to worry about, my dreams were going to come true. But then, later on, I realized what actually had happened. I wasn't going into Vettrera, I wasn't going to be accepted into the mainland. I was going to Oakbrook and Calvarie. I was going to the protectorates.

Now, I was in no position to be picky, or even upset in the slightest. The country I was coming from....well, it was a hellhole. I would take the protectorates over that cesspool any day of the week, but still, it was disheartening. It was like someone getting accepted into a star school, only to be told that all they can afford is the state school. But then again...this girl was also first generation. She should have been happy to attend school anywhere, she should have been happy to just have the opportunity. But she wasn't. It wasn't what she wanted. Because it wasn't what she dreamed of.

Oakbrook and Calvarie was a mixing pot, much more than in Vettrera. In Vettrera you really only get the Whites, Blacks, and Browns (OOC: Hispanics), all of which are distributed pretty fairly. But in Oakbrook and Calvarie....you get all nationalities, all races, all immigrants. The population has literally exploded in recent years, and the natives don't like it. Vettrera has been flooding their immigrant applications into Oakbrook and Calvarie....making Oakbrook and Calvarie less likely to ask for independence, because the people that would call for independence, are becoming less and less in number. The societal structure is changing there, and conflicts are high. Vettrera has Gangs. Syndicates, Assassins, and Terrorists. But...none of that compares to what goes on in Oakbrook and Calvarie. Members of rival nations are always in conflict, and the natives are in conflict against immigrants. Rioting, Hate Crimes, and Drive Byes are common. The turf wars are larger, more elaborate, and just...harsher. Oakbrook and Calvarie will become a battleground soon...

Here We Go Again: Tigers try to not fail in New Wolfopolis/Oakbrook and Calvarie

Everybody does previews. We do REviews. JK. I'm too lazy. Previews it is!

Anyways, we're here in Oakbrook and Calvarie and New Wolfopolis for the fifth edition of the International Baseball Slam, whose size has tripled (eight then, twenty-four now) from its first edition. How far we've come in the baseball world, founding this, winning that, and hosting the other. Anyways, we still dislike the conventional preview, so let's just break them down by potential.

As for the hosts? New Wolfopolis, a world-class baseball nation, has had very good relations with us in the past, while Oakbrook and Calvarie is a newer nation to the sporting world. That's pretty much it.

But screw the usual preview. I'm only covering the ranked teams! Sorry the rest of you. Unranked is bad, although one of you unrankeds will probably end up in the championship because that's how the IBS works. The hard bit is guessing who. (Gregoryisgodistan, IBS II. Nova Anglicana, IBS III. Arana, IBS IV. They're all great, except Arana.)

(IC-ly hosted in Oakbrook and Calvarie)
New Wolfopolis Wolfpack 8.167
POTENTIAL: Championship Round. New Wolfopolis's baseball pedigree, all-around balance, and high ranking should ensure them an easy spot in the playoffs, but they also have the beginnings of rivalries with other contenders of the ilk of Nova Anglicana. If they can get by their opponents (possibly with the help of a favorable draw), they could be the biggest threat to Gregoryisgodistan.
FLOOR: Ro12 knockout. You never know, this is a fairly stable team but burnout is inevitable. Perhaps a draw against a better second-place finisher like Jeckland mixed with turgid bad luck could doom them.
PREDICTION: SEMIFINALS. I'm seeing them as a top-four team, but they could be the unlucky one to be drawn against Gregoryisgodistan. If that were to happen, I still think Gregoryisgodistan is the favorite.
Gregoryisgodistan Bat Slaves 14.5
POTENTIAL: Champions. Seriously, the Slaves are three-time champions, the only team to threepeat in the IBS (although there are others, or should I say another, in the WBC) Do we really have to go on?
FLOOR: Group stage knockout. A rival deity smites Greg. The team goes home for whatever happens then.
PREDICTION: FINALS. I say that this is the year the IBS Empire of the Gregoryisgodistanis falls. But still, it'll be entertaining as we watch them bash their way through the group stage and early playoffs...as usual.
Sangti Indios 2.354
POTENTIAL: Semifinals. Before you scoff, the semifinals are their ceiling. And to be fair, they did just win the WBC. However, defending WBC champions are just plain sucky at the IBS (Super-Llamaland IBS IV. Yep.) and Sangti might be carrying out that trend if they weren't technically a different nation.
FLOOR: Group stage knockout. They have a tradition of IBS suckage and WBC domination.
PREDICTION: Quarterfinals: They'll get there, but as the IBS goes, Sangti isn't the best squad.
(IC-ly hosted in New Wolfopolis)
Super-Llamaland Tigers 5
POTENTIAL: FINALS. We're the world number-two and the champions WBC-wise. Of course, the IBS is its own little sandbox, and we've never placed higher than fourth. And that was out of eight. Sixth out of eight...Sixth out of twelve...Tenth out of sixteen. We do not do well in this.
FLOOR: Group stage knockout. Just like last time!
PREDICTION: Quarterfinals. See Sangti.
Imota Sunwings 3.833
Nova Anglicana Lions 10.5

To come soon!
