12th Handball World Cup Everything Thread (IC)

Hello, and welcome to the 12th Handball World Cup, hosted by Gregoryisgodistan. This World Cup will feature 40 teams, divided into 8 groups of 5. They will play double-round robin in Gregoryisgodistan, followed by a single-elimination knockout round with 16 teams. Scorination will be with xcorinate, handball function.

Cutoff will be between 8 and 10 PM EDT (1 and 3 AM GMT.) I will announce more specific cutoff times at the previous cutoff.

There are very few dedicated handball venues in Gregoryisgodistan, and as a result, we are forced to convert other sporting venues to handball for the tournament. All facilities are in the Capital District except as noted.

Group A will be played at Lord Almighty Gregory Arena, which will also host two round of 16 matches, a quarterfinal, and the final. It is typically a basketball arena but converted to handball, it will seat 17,000. It has never been configured for handball before, so we do not have a photo of that, but here is a photo of the LAGA for the Almighty Ten Basketball Tournament.

Group B will be played at Willingsley Arena, which is typically used for ice hockey. It will also host two round of 16 matches. A temporary floor will be placed over the ice. Here is a photo of it for hockey.

Group C will be played at the only handball-specific arena in Gregoryisgodistan, the Handball Club at District 13, which is located in District 13. It will also host a round of 16 match and a quarterfinal. It seats 9,000.

Group D will be played at The Armory at the Gregoryisgodistan Military Academy, home to the varsity basketball and club handball teams. It seats 2,500 spectators. The court has lines for both basketball and handball. Here is a photo of it during an NSCAA Basketball Game. The Military Academy is located in District 1.

Group E will be played at Technology Services Arena on the campus of Gregoryisgodistan Tech. The arena seats 1,200 and is normally used for basketball. It will be converted to handball for the duration of the tournament.

Group F will be played at the Gregoryisgodistan Events Center. This is normally used for assemblies, speeches, and public executions, but will be converted to a handball venue for this tournament. It seats 11,500 and will host a Round of 16 game, a quarterfinal and a semifinal. Here is a photo of it being prepared for the Creation Day Speech in 2013. The area in the middle that is being made into a stage is where the handball court will be.

Group G will be played at the LAGNU Gymnasium on the campus of Lord Almighty Gregory National University. The former home of the LAGNU basketball team, this arena seats 6,000 and will also be used for a round of 16 match, a quarterfinal, a semifinal, and the third place game. It is also the home to LAGNU graduation ceremonies, which will be held a few weeks after the tournament concludes. Expect many LAGNU students to attend these games, especially if Gregoryisgodistan or one of their rivals is drawn into it.

Group H will be played at the Student Recreational Facility on the campus of the Culinary Institute of Gregoryisgodistan. Normally, the arena only seats 750, but temporary seats will be added to bring the capacity up to 2,000. It will also host a round of 16 match. It is normally used for basketball but will be converted to handball for the tournament. The CIG students will provide complimentary world-class cooking to all visiting teams who play in Group H.

Gregoryisgodistan Roster:

Since nobody in Gregoryisgodistan knows how to play handball, the sports federation decided to buy slaves and use them as a team. In exchange, the slaves will be liberated after the tournament if they make it out of the group stage, but executed if they finish last in the group. A third or fourth place finish will result in continued slave labor in other tasks. Unfortunately, the sports federation didn't bother hiring a coach, so the slave players only know the very basic rules of handball, and no more. Other than goalkeepers, they don't even have specialized positions. So there's a good chance they will be executed, and a very small chance of liberation.

Also, the sports ministry decided to be cheap and buy the cheapest slaves, so some of them are old, young, or handicapped.

Please use the players' full names at all times, including the "Slave" part, or you could face very harsh (IC) legal consequences from the Gregoryisgodistani authorities.

Menukten Handball Roster

Nobody in Menukten plays handball so a witch doctor was hired as the team manager and coach who animated the appropriate numbers of moss doctors out of moss, twigs and leaves and taught them how to play the game. Moss doctors are about 4 feet tall, ugly, and thirsty for your blood. Since they are all created for the purpose of the game, they have no names. However the witch doctor that animated them and our handball team coach is named Salory Treads-on-Crops, a skilled and feared witch doctor who doesn't let morality get in the way of his practice.

Edit: The Demon Lord Azazel is now our left wingman after being summoned by the moss doctors.

As for RP permissions: you can do anything, even kill a Moss Doctor (which can only be accomplished by stabbing it with a flint knife or blade). Treads-on-Crops can always make new ones. Just don't touch coach Treads-on-Crops himself; he has a vengeful spirit and knows many good curses and your players are likely to regret crossing him.

Roster notes and schedule RP for matchday 1

The talented freshmen that competed in the 11th Handball World Cup have matured and are ready to give up their spot for the next generation. Handball, the only sport in Ko-oren whose highest level is college level, is increasingly popular among Ko-orenite students. A few universities pride themselves on their handball team, though scholarships and the like are not part of the system (and never will be), and the head coaches of the three most successful teams have come together to coach the group to hopefully a second round.

Because last time, things did not work out. Young players, hardly any coaching, and the team finished dead last in the group. The same group is now slightly older and wiser, and this might be their last chance of competing. Good players can stay on the national team for a longer time, but club-level Handball is mostly students. Some successful players have stayed on college teams for a while, but by the time they are 25/26, they tend to turn their back on the sport, and play in local leagues (and no local team is as good as any college team). There are 40 university teams, and they draw as much attention as some of the smaller basketall teams (and they often play in the same venue). Small cities, small population, so that is the only way to go.

Handball is also the only sport to feature a majority of female head coaches, in fact, the two assistants of Hayato Yamazaki are female. Women's sports in Ko-oren are still underappreciated (not per se underfunded, though), but female coaches (head coaches, assistants) are not rare in any of the large sports (football, baseball, gridiron, field hockey, ice hockey, basketball, handball, rugby league and rugby union).

In the 12th edition, Ko-oren is in one group with heavyweights Saintland, similarly ranked San Jose Guayabal, and two unranked teams, Maximland and Kolmya. Most groups have three unranked teams, but that is a story for another day. The schedule is as follows:

Which means that the team is in the bad position that the final day is a bye day. Our results will be in after day nine, when the four other teams still have a chance to get the points they need to advance. We are in the lucky position that we hit the lowest pot 2 team, where we could have hit 16th placed Nouvel Ecosse (San Jose Guayabal is 33rd).

Another thing that immediately catches the eye is the enormous amount of high ranked teams that are absent. From the top 10, four teams are missing (3rd, 6th, 8th and 10th). There are eight groups, so sixteen teams in the top two pots. We could have had ranks 1-16 in these two pots, but the rankings go from one to 33 (which means that over half of the top 32 ranked teams are missing!)

Notes

This team consists of high school students from several foreign resident schools in St. Paulus, all of them members of Vindicta Progressvm, a group of foreign resident high school students who oppose the current regime in Saintland. They escaped from Saintland with assistance from Feministvs Sanctvsterra and will be entering the Handball World Cup, thanks to generous funding from the Nicholls Corporation. After the Handball World Cup, they will be attending an exclusive boarding school in the Free Republics, with their tuition paid in full by the Nicholls Corporation. They will wear handball kits that look exactly like those of the real Saintland National Handball Team. Saintland is boycotting the Handball World Cup this time around because the tournament is being held in Gregoryisgodistan. However, the King's Government forgot to submit papers withdrawing from the Handball World Cup, so Vindicta Progressvm is able to compete on their behalf in Gregoryisgodistan.
