JECKLAND STAVE OFF LOSS

Match Report: Jeckland in Ingla Terra
Jeckland bat first
Jeckland 289 (107.0 overs), 242 (71.0 overs)
Ingla Terra 258 (141.5 overs), 248/4 (79.0 overs)
Drawn

Nagging death bowling saw Jeckland escape with a draw against a plucky Ingla Terran side. Jeckland won the toss and batted on a sunny morning. Donald Jones fell cheaply in the third over, bowled by Rodrigues, making it six for one. James played a couple of glorious cover drives for four, but attempting another one off a wide ball caused him to be caught behind for Rodrigues' second wicket. At 18-2 things were looking bad but some steady batting from Dawkins and Boriniho saw them through to lunch at 68-2, with only five boundaries. After lunch the pair tried to inject some impotus, but a risky single attempt went wrong after a wonderful direct hit from Hodson saw the captain stranded. 80-3 and debutant O'Leary was in. The left hander was aggresive without being stupid and he and Boriniho bulit a partnership, the latter passing 50 on the way. However a wicked spinner from Barron clean bowled O'Leary, leaving the score 144-4. Ayers blocked two balls and tea came on the same score. After tea Ayers went on the attack, bludgeoning a run a ball 30 before being stumped off Barron. Boriniho was out lbw against Summers and at 194-6, things were looking bleak. Parsons getting bowled by Summers made it 200-7. But the evergreen Tirek and debutant Johnson took the game to the bowlers, with bowling allrounder Johnson smacking a six over midwicket off the bowling of Sheppard. The day closed on 262-7.

Day two and the partnership lasted only two more balls before Tirek edged behind off Sheppard. After a couple of blows from Holmes, Rodrigues finished off the last two to leave Jeckland 289 all out, a decent total. The Ingla Terran openers batted cautiously until lunch, with all four of our main bowlers unable to budge them. 40-0 at the break. However after lunch Holmes got the breakthrough, trapping Hodson lbw. Shortly after he dispatched of Monaghan in the same way and at 50-2, things were looking up. However Bowler and Carty picked up where the openers left off with some defensive batting taking the score to 102-2 at tea. After tea Bowler was removed quickly by Tirek, caught by Dawkins at slip. They could have had Carty too, but Dawkins shelled that one, which would prove costly. Greenwood had a nightmare, unable to lay bat on ball but somehow staying in. That combined with Carty's dogged refusal to try to score fast runs slowed the rate almost to a standstill. Finally debutant Johnson took his first wicket, putting Greenwood out of his misery by bowling him. Nevertheless the day closed at that point on a low 137-4.

The third day dawned with cloud in the air, and the Ingla Terran batsmen stuck to their gameplan, with Carty and Stevenson playing a very traditional, defensive form of cricket. Ryan got frustrated and lost his radar, along with Johnson. However cool heads Tirek and Holmes regained control, but were unable to take wickets. Until the last over of the session, where Tirek had Carty lbw. The Ingla Terrans had batted for over a hundred overs, but were 179-5. Stevenson and Dale realised this and tried to inject some impotus into the innings, but we fielded magnificently, cutting off anything that could be and mounting pressure. Eventually it told, with Dale bowled going for an ugly slog off Holmes. 239-6. The lead paceman mopped up the tail to end the session, Ingla Terra 258 all out, Jeckland lead by 31. After tea James was keen to show the opposition his way of batting, with some big hits allowing him to rack up 61 before the close. At the other end, Jones went quickly but Dawkins stuck around to see Jeckland to 101-1 at the close.

However, the weather struck on the fourth day. No play was possible before tea, and after it a few more overs were lost. Dawkins and Boriniho fell soon after tea with Rodrigues bowling a dream spell, which culminated in the removal of James. 127-4. O'Leary and Ayers batted sensibly for a time, then Ayers' one day instinct too over and he was stumped off Barren dancing down the track. 167-5 became 183-5 as Parsons hit four fours, but was then caught off Rodrigues at slip. 183-6 at the close.

O'Leary and Johnson decided not to hang around on the fifth day and see if they could give the bowlers a good score to defend. Some huge blows took the score to 238, but then something remarkable happened. Rodrigues came on for his second spell of the morning and clean bowled the last four wickets for just four runs. Shell shocked, the tailenders then had to bowl, and Ingla Terra threw off the shackles from the last innings and raced to 62-0 at lunch, needing 214 from the next two sessions to win. But then Tirek came on. His economical bowling was pretty much the sole reason we didn't lose. He dried out the runs at one end, whilst Ryan's destructive spell took three wickets at the other. 129-3 at tea, it looked like a draw as Ingla Terra still needed 147. But no-one told Carty and Greenwood. Both transformed from their first innings efforts in different ways, the two set about the task quickly and efficiently. With 40 needed off 4 overs, Holmes ended their hopes by bowling Greenwood, and the game petered out to a draw.

Jeckland go into the next game with their tails up looking for the win.

Chief national selector Samuel Mason also confirmed that intermediate contract holder Mike Sarrin will travel with the squad as backup wicketkeeper to Finney, with Garland Goudreau paying the price for a lean Test season with the bat.

Sarrin is the only non-centrally contracted player in the squad, while spinners Leroy Bérard and Ben Broome and paceman Bryan Sinclair will sit out the trip alongside Goudreau to work at the National Centre of Excellence at City Centre.

Liventia side to tour Chelta: Jonathan Adams (Raithwick Park), Walter Ashworth (Folenisa), Kevin Christensen (National Centre of Excellence), Arthur Cunningham (Raithwick Park), Max Finney (captain/wk, Raithwick Park), Matt Geach (vice-captain, Dover), Dylan Hennessey (Central Orean), Duncan Lewis (Talbott), Thomas Jonsson (Central Orean), Ollie Kerr (Raithwick Park), Daniel Quinn (Raithwick Park), James Quinn (Raithwick Park), David Ryan (Folenisa), Mike Sarrin (wk, National Centre of Excellence), Will Stewart (Dover), Stuart Watting (Central Orean), Michael Westley (Cyclonesville)

Starting lineup for first Test: JCA Quinn, MA Finney*†, AJ Cunningham, DA Hennessey, WWR Ashworth, OH Kerr, TD Jonsson, DM Lewis, MC Geach, DM Quinn, JPK Adams (bowling: Geach/Adams opening, D Quinn/Lewis spin, Kerr/Jonsson/Ashworth remaining overs)

Du Pont, two non-first class players to turn out for Greens

The hot young player of the season, Brendon du Pont, is to don the familiar light green cap of the Cartersburg Greens for their game against the touring Macquarrie side. The 18-year old, who has lived in Wray since he was two, but was born in Dover in Liventia, has been at the centre of a row between the Liventian Cricket Board of Authority and the Wray Cricket Board over his eligibility to play for either country.

Although the game does not carry first-class status, the selection of Du Pont has shown that the WCB are willing to challenge the desires of the LCBA. Du Pont will keep wicket in the game at the Cartersburg Oval, but it is his heroic and extraordinary batting exploits that have really grabbed the headlines over the recent months: his match-winning 145* for Gosforth CC in the City & Regions league was followed up by back-to-back centuries in the two-day competition, and an all-round performance in the final of the T20 competition which saw him make 89 off 54 balls and take four dismissals behind the stumps.

Du Pont will be captained by Nelson's Day batsman Jamie Holtermann, whose first-class form has been sensational, averaging 63 in the current season. Alongside the two are two non-First class players in East Cartersburg (who contest the same City & Regions League One Day group as Du Pont's club) seamer Ollie Mason, and the highest bidder in the Cricket Action Appeal auction, who wins a place in the team. The winner was a businessman from Albion, who passed the opportunity onto his 17-year old son, Marhsall, who bowls leg-breaks. Four circuit regulars in Hugo Brunt, Jordan Matthews, Will Huxton and Mark Hudson, recently expelled from the Test side, all appear in the side. Left-arm spinner Peter Johanssen, who played 134 First-Class and List-A games for Eastern Territories, joins Chairmans Pick, young medium pacer Jonnie van der Merwe, who has 4 FC class, to complete the line-up.

Cartersburg Greens X1 to play Macquarrie, Cartersburg Oval:

1. HJ Brunt, 2. MPA Hudson, 3. JP Holtermann*, 4. JAE Matthews, 5. NW Custon-Davies, 6. BAR du Pont (wk), 7. WP Huxton, 8. ML McKinnel, 9. OLP Mason, 10. JT van der Merwe, 11. PJ Johanssen

(Bowling: van der Merwe, Mason to share new ball, 1st change is Custon-Davies (left-arm pace) & Will Huxton. Spin provided by Marshall McKinnel & Peter Johanssen)

Keranani to get Macquarrie Test

The Keranani Events Centre Oval, in the resort town of Crystal Springs, high in the Terrabondante Central Mountains, will host the Second Test in the two-match series between Wray and Macquarrie. The ground has played host to one international game in the past, when Wray met Liventia in a t20 fixture in which Jason Keillher struck a 46-ball 102 to win the game for the home side. It has undergone moderate renovations over the last 6 months after it was announced that it would host this game, which involved adding more spectator and team facilities, as well as putting in over 5,000 extra seats, pushing up the total seating to 6,000.

The pitch has seen a sharp reduction in the level of non-cricket events on the surface, with the National Equestrian Championships scheduled for last month was moved elsewhere to help protect the surface, and the Ground Chairman Nicky Rogan said that 'cricket will become a priority in the ground, with a distinct reduction of other events'. The spin-friendly T.M Parker Bayside stadium will host the 1st Test.

The team sat around the dining table of their hotel. The mood was somewhat subdued. Not quiet sad but certainly disappointed. The nations first match of the season, a tour game against Wray's Cartersbug Greens, had slipped away from them. A drawn game due to Cartersburg not finishing their finial innings. The result had brought about a new hatred for Law 16 in most of the team. The draw was particularly hard on the bowlers. With the last hour of the match called and two wickets required for victory. Any team would have felt confident with the goal of two wickets in a minimum of twenty overs. That and the safety net of Cartersburgs need for 103 runs to win. But no matter what the Macquarrie bowlers tried, they couldn't manage the task. The batsmen held on scoring 57 off 120 balls without loss. With the final hour finished and the innings unfinished, Cartersburg Greens drew the match. Much to the dismay of the Macquarrie team.
Billy Murdoch broke the silence, "Made a right flamin' galah outta myself putting that poor slog down near the end there," he chuckled.
"Too right mate," Fred Spofforth chimed in. "Fell right into ya hands and out the backaya legs. Never seen anythin' like it," the team let out a few laughs.
"Not even Coopy missing the stumps from two yards?" said Donald Bradman. "Different move trying to throw a run out from there mate."
"I honestly don't know what that was myself," said William Cooper. "Sure so long as I get it out of the system for Wray."
"There's a lot we needa get out of our system for Wray," muttered George Giffen. The laughter stopped and the silence filled the room again. The team knew the captain was right. Improvements would be needed for both tests against Wray. They would be a new level above the Cartersburg Greens and there would be no room for half baked fielding and complacent bowling.

Series levelled in close third Test
Liventia have levelled the series in the third and penultimate Test against Chelta with a one-wicket win at Torpenhow's Carnegie Oval.

Having survived the onslaught of wrist spinner Alistair May earlier in the innings, who took a five-for and a hat-trick, the Liventians pushed on bravely to chase down Chelta's total over the third day, tail-enders Daniel Quinn and Jonothan Adams carrying the Liventians over the line to secure their first win of the series.

From the outset of the match, spin, as usual, played a decisive role in the Carnegie Oval Test, with spinners from both sides tacking five-wicket hauls in the match: Alistair May for Chelta and Daniel Quinn for Liventia.

While the Cheltish found it difficult to bat against the high-quality spin attack of Liventia, losing 13 wickets in total to spin, the Liventians fared better in their first innings, managing to cross the threshold of 400, a rare accomplishment at the Carnegie, including a hundred for Dylan Hennessey.

Cheltish captain Percy Waight failed to make an impact in this match: his often invaluable role in calming the waters and restoring order to a tempestuous Cheltish innings was markedly unfulfilled, making 1 and 5 respectively.

Indeed, Waight failed to hold back a mid-order collapse in Chelta's second innings that saw the hosts collapse from 2/98 to 5/141 in the space of eleven overs.

Only with the 108-run partnership of Donald Goss and Rupert Madison was sanity restored to Chelta's innings, but Chelta still made it only to a second-innings total of 285, setting Liventia a deficit of 191 to chase over the better part of three days.

Chelta did well to hold back the Liventians in the latter's run chase, taking three wickets for 33 runs in the first ten overs, and later inducing a mid-order collapse at the hands of the irrepressible Alistair May, seeing the Liventians lose 4 wickets for 8 runs.

Alistair May took a hat-trick spaced over two overs, claiming Hennessey, Watting and Jonsson as his consecutive victims.

Nevertheless, Alistair May's ebullient form was not enough to stop the charge of the top Test team in GCF cricket, whose tail-end put up a heroic fight to bring the tourists home, clearing the line by but a wicket's length.

With Liventia's victory in this Test, the series is levelled, and the final Test at King's Cricket Ground, the spiritual home of Cheltish cricket, will doubtless prove to be as fiercely contested a Test match as any; the Test is expected to be near sold-out for at least the first two days.
