Iosef Milheru Oĝea felt his skis slice what was almost a thin layer of ice on top of the forest snow. He was only halfway down, and he already knew that this was certainly not his best run. Perhaps even maybe his worst. He soared off the third jump, feeling his own discomfort and poor balance. His skis crashed into the snow, warping and twanging as he landed flat-footed, immediately tried to cut the snow, lost control of one of his skis, and swerved off course. He righted himself with his poles and nearly spat with frustration. He'd been losing precious hundredths of a second this entire run, and now it seemed it would be all he could do to get into the top 100 skiers. Thank god he was an Alpine Skier, otherwise, this would be the culmination of his career. As it was, he was humiliating himself and his nation in the crown jewel of Alpine Skiing, the Downhill event. This was truly a disastrous run, as he swept off course again, spraying blue-painted snow over a line of volunteers. His skis were rattling, the snow that he'd loved, snow he'd fallen asleep on after long training runs, snow he'd learned to bleed on and cherish, was now destroying him. He was fighting the beloved snow just to stay upright. This was not the way he'd learned to ski. He'd learned to ski by working with the snow, cascading down the mountain in line with the snow, practically being the snow. He soared off the final jump, breathing out as he did so, seeing the eddies of steam and snowflakes pour out of his mouth. He landed perfectly, and cascaded across the finish line. 66th place. He smacked a pole into the snow. 66th place. 66th place wasn't going to get him anywhere at all in these games. He sighed, sending out more steam. 66th place. Thank god he was an alpine skier.

Siolæsĉigu Marĉi Œssu Saiĝudea was nervous as all hell. True, though the iconic curling competition began tomorrow, with twenty-two matches slated, Isula ĝe Ru's men's team wasn't one of them. They had the privilege, if it could be called such, of standing by to watch Renoa and Anditia's opening battle of wits. The women weren't so lucky. In fact, it seemed as though the work the men's team would be doing was completely transferred to the females. They were to challenge Kelssek, the group heavyweight and deciding factor as to whether or not the Women's team was to advance. In fact, that was why Marĉi's scholarly robes were now whisking away the snow of the Olympic Village, not hanging in warmth. He was on his way to a meeting with his team, Siolæsĉiga Iebe Mirit Saitoa, and the rest of the women's team. The eight of them (the nation didn't believe in alternates) would discuss the women's game against Kelssek, the men's preparations for their opening game against Renzynistan, and the manner in which they would observe the Renoa-Anditia match.

Siolæsĉigu Nicola Danhel Comacu Umora was walking with his head bent low, on his way to the aforementioned team meeting. He was lost in thought, as scholars so often are, about many things, such as where curling stones come from and if Isula ĝe Ru and The Archregimency were the only nations who curled while wearing robes. He was also, surprise of surprises, contemplating the iconic national moment that was to take place tomorrow, as the greatest curling competition in the world began.

Samuél Forĉu Saramaria was actually in utter disbelief that it was only the third day of the Olympics. He was tired, exhausted, and hungry, and there was research to be done. The coming day would be the most massive yet, even more so than yesterdays 11-athlete disaster, in which twenty-five medals were awarded, but not a one to Isulans. Tonight, however, the nation was electric. Tonight, Curling started, as the women's team opened with arguably the biggest game ever played in Isulan history, against Kelssek, and the men would get an idea of what they were up against as Renoa and Anditia fought it out. Tonight would also see another Isulan medal hopeful, Aĝel Esĉelhelu Bolha, make her first two runs of the games in the Women's Super Combined, and Lucau Moĝu Cæla return to the Biathlon track in the pursuit event, albeit with a two-minute deficit to make up. As if the nation needed any more excitement, besides curling, the second event of the all-important Luge competition began, with Iulha Malheu Saida and Maria Sanhu Sanha taking to the track in the first runs of the women's competition. Short Track Speed Skating began with the qualification runs for the women's 3000 meter relay, and the Isulan team of Maria Saiĉialu Marĉia, Laura Maria Saitaçiu Maria, Baleĉa Nicolu Saiduia, and Anhela Anha Marcu are not exactly underdogs. Short Track continues with the Women's 500m qualification, a blistering-fast race with two blistering-fast Isulan competitors, Maria Saiĉialu Marĉia and Laura Maria Saitaçiu Maria having no respite from the ice. Short Track rounds off with the men's 1500 meter final, where Isulan medal favorite Alef Aiberu Ma'a has a definite chance. In all, there will be a whopping 18 Isulan athletes in competition today. Yes, Samuél groaned. A long day indeed

Vanorian Skaters Speed To Medals

In a sport that makes the most of Vanorians, at least the elven population, peak physical attributes, the delegation got their first medals. Yes, medals, as the women took home the gold and silver in women's 3000 m speed skating last night, the first medals for a delegation that has very high hopes for the medal tally. Both women wore the capes modeled after the Vanorian flag proudly upon the podium, holding up a bouquet of red roses for the gold medalist and white roses for our silver medal winner.

It was a nice change of pace, as one of our favored athletes to medal finally came through on their potential with the goal. It is a hope now that these two wonderful women will have "broken the ice" for the rest of the delegation who seemed caught up in the awe and glory of the event impeded their ability to perform. With medal events coming up in the next few days with more of our athletes favored to hit the podium and put up good results, it is definitely a good omen.

However it should come as to no surprise that it would be the Speed Skating event that would produce the goods first. A sport that is dictated by speed and balance suits the physical attributes our elves quite nicely, perhaps even a bit in an unfair way. With bodies that are typically more slender and agile than others and an aptitude for great balance and above average speed, it is this sport that seems as if it was designed with elves in mind and the medals seem to justify that. Whether that sort of dominance continues into the other events, especially the shorter relays where advantages are not always able to be pressed, will be interesting to watch.

All in all, it was a good day for the Vanorian delegation on the second official day of competition in these games. The medal barrier has been broken with a huge sigh of relief here at home. The fans can now relax and just enjoy the games as they are meant to be enjoyed and the competitors don't have that huge monkey on their back about trying to press for the podium. While there is certainly still pressure with certain athletes and expectations, the need to be the first could have been a devastating weight to carry and caused them some mental misfortune. All that is out of the way and it's all ahead full with bright smiles and eager expectations.

Day 3 will feature a full days worth of events, as well as five more sets of medals to hand out. Will Vaugania add to his count? And will we see some new names on that leaderboard? RP cutoff.

Arçon, Saugeais-

Day three has begun, and Qazoxian athletes had an interesting day. In women's super combined, Tammy Hull finished 11th, while Georgia Hayden and Lian Xu finished 54th & 55th and Jessica Hobbes crashed in the downhill portion. Hobbes passed all medical tests and will be able to compete in her other events.

Curling started today, and the Qazox men won 5-4 over Mollary and the women had a bye date. In hockey, the men had an off day while the women lost to Greenview 2-0, eliminating them from the medal round.

The women's Luge started today, with Marylynn Kover tied for 16th, Natalie Johannsen 103rd and Lori McLorn DNF her 2nd run due to a broken runner.

Peter O'Brien finished 22nd in Male Ski Jumping Normal Hill, our best performance ever. A middling 119.0m in Run 1 was alright, and in run 2 he got a whopping 135.0m, which was sad, as if we had've converted that 2nd run twice, we'd be holding a bronze medal.

In the Women's, Jane King Qualified 27th with 127.0m, and Samantha Hart qualified 18th with 129.0m. Our medal hopes swing on those two.

The Nexxus Drako Age

Nexxie rejoins Nexxus Drako, renamed Kian State
Author: Joan d'Arcy

KIAN: After a few weeks of independence, Eternal President Nexxus Drako has taken back the rights to Nexxie, the island next to Nexxus Drako, after the Consul, who is now forbidden to mention, attempted to murder Nexxus after what eyewitnesses call a speciesist remark by the Consul. He was swiftly executed and Nexxie taken back by the United States.

As the capital of Nexxie was Kian, Kian State will be the name of the area from now on, as tensions flew after a recent official map of Esportiva omitted Nexxie and placed it erroneously within Drakonian borders. The meeting between the two national leaders was to clear the air.

In related sports news, Kian Kings and Joaks Jesters will remain in operation, although they will now be affilliated with the NDFA, and not the Nexxie FA. The same cannot be said for Nexxie United, who have been stripped of their license. However, the clubs owners have reformed a new, totally seperate club known as Drako United, a competitor to the Drako Dragons. They will debut next season.

I think the nerves are getting to me. Won't be long before it'll all be over, one way or another, but the tension is difficult to take.

I probably shouldn't have a pen in my hands or anything. At least, N. seems to think that graffitiing witticisms about certain international heads of state might not be the done thing on the walls of the Olympic village, even in the privacy of my own room. Oh well.

N. has also informed me, after consultation with members from an unnamed delegation, that sept- is not in fact a summer games prefix, either; there's a heptathlon, but I don't really follow enough track and field to care. That's what gender segregation will do for you, I guess.

Women's short track speed skating was a disappointment. Oh, I don't care that Leonie Dimant finished one position short of qualification from heat six. She's from Ervimnal, it's a nice place on the whole, but what's it good for, really? No, I was mostly frustrated for those entire forty-eight seconds because of the depths of her mediocrity. Not only was she middling, she was unable to distinguish herself at all--so many of the competitors' first names started with L, it seemed that our country was unable to produce anyone original! Being beaten is tolerable; being boring is embarrassing. N. pointed out that many of the racers had been seeded by first initial, so in fact there was not an extreme overabundance of Ls. And even if there had been, well, the men's heats would be just as predictable. After reviewing the draw, I decided to forgo the quarterfinals in favor of one last practice, and much more nervous pacing once on solid ground.

I can't bring myself to go to the medal ceremonies. Too much music. I'm afraid I'll start trying to sense its rhythms, follow its sway, and I can't get distracted. At least not for a few more days. That's all we need. P. purports to have much loftier reasons for eschewing anthems, etc. but she has always been tiresome. J. actually claims to want to make friends, experience culture among the other athletes. Probably sincere, just unambitious. Well, perhaps given local results he has a right to be. But it's the Olympics, he has to dream big, right? Which would infuriate me more, losing out to him or knowing he didn't try?

These are absurd hypotheticals. I shall resume pacing, imminently.

From MSPN--

A Medal For Maineiacs, Hockey Happiness, and Disappointment On the Slopes

Maineiacs picked up its secons medal of the games -- a silver-- in Men's Moguls. Frank Lloyd, of Saratoga Springs, Allegheney, wonthe silver medal in today's competition. Lloyd was only 25th in qualifications, just .18 above the cutoff point with a score of 24.03 but found his stride in later rounds posting scores of 24.97, 24.93, and 24.23 to take the silver. Other news from the slopes was less good, as Theresa Miller missed a gate on the slalom portion of the Women's Super Combined, while Mary Donaldson-Shorter fell on the downhill portion, and neither woman finished the race.

On the ice, our Women's team finished the round-robin stage undefeated, beating Costa Luna 2-1. Anna Karsten had the winning goal at 2:57 left in regulation. They will face Group 16 winner Anarchist States of America in the round of 16. Our Men's team also remains undefeated throught 3 games, beating Gregoryisgodistan 1-0. There are two more games remaining in the round-robin.

Women's curling began today, but in their opening match, our team fell to Valanora 7-5 when the Valanoran skip threw for a double in the ninth end and Maineiacs skip Pauline Bonnet miscalculated skip rock in the 10th, resulting in a blank end to give Valanora the win.

In Women's Luge, Marge Stanton is currently in 11th place after 2 runs with a time of 1:31.420. A medal is not out of the question, but she'll need near perfect runs to do it.

Finally, speedskating, both long and short is underway. In the Women's Short Track 3000m relay, our women finished last in their heat and did not advance. Linda Thompson was 10th and Lu Chang was 8th in their respective heats of the Women's 500m and neither will advance. In the Men's 1500m, Greg Styles did not qualify. Kramer Lipshitz made it to the semi-finals anfter coming in 2nd in his heat, only to finish last in the semis. The news was no better for our men on the Long track. Skeet Shorter was a dismal 118th in the 500m.

ECP - Men's Curling Livestream Highlights

This is the highlights of yesterday's livestream of the Men's Curling Event. Kriegiersien beat Electrum 6-5 in the final end amid controversy in the 8th end.

00:20 (ETM time): Welcome back folks to our live coverage on the 9th Winter Olympic Games here at ecp.com.em. Today's livestream commentary will be presented by Brad Daley, the Coach of the Women's Curling Team. The event being covered today is the Men's Curling Event Group 8 Match of Kriegiersien (KGS) vs. Electrum (ETM). Last year's quarterfinalists will go against the top ranked team, Kriegiersien. The match will be underway shortly.
First End
00:32: The first stone is curled from Kriegiersien, with them holding the hammer.
00:48: First end, over! Kriegiersien retains the hammer when Electrum slides their stone into Kriegiersien's last one in the house, but it narrowly just slides out of the house as well. Kriegiersien want to gain more points than just the one, and so they blank the end - in order to retain the hammer advantage of curling the last stone.
Second End
00:54: Electrum slides a curl into the first Kriegiersien one, knocking that one into the second one, pushing them both out of the way. Outstanding - but with no guard stones, Electrum's stone sits vulnerable.
01:02: In the second end, Kriegiersien gets two points after knocking all of Electrum's stones out of the way and curling another one nicely into the house. Nice work from Kriegiersien.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 2-0 Electrum
Third End
01:04: Electrum will start the third end with the hammer advantage.
01:10: Kriegiersien orders a time out to stop the clock to 'reevaluate and think' - they are put in a tough spot with corner guards blocking the centre curl.
01:13: Krie slides a nice stone, with a good curl. It curls when needed and knocks out the curl in the house. It is Electrum's final turn.
01:14: Electrum knocks their guard stone into Krie's last stone - Electrum has gained 1 point. Will they be able to catch up when the advantage is given back to Kriegiersien?
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 2-1 Electrum
Fourth End
01:25: Kriegiersien pulls a toughy with two guard stones outside the house, protecting the centre stone in the house and one on the side. There is literally no way that Electrum can gain this point. Krigiersien to extend their lead by another point, and a step closer to victory.
01:27: Electrum is chewing up their thinking time - this shot demands only perfection.
01:30: HAAARD!!! Mark Einarrson yells as Conan and Janus sweep furiously. This is so tough. There's the contact! They knocked the side curl and then it rebounds to the centre stone!
01:32: How will Kriegiersien respond with their final stone? With two guard stones in the way, surely this is even more of an impossibility.
01:34: They don't! It was an impossibility! Electrum pulls themselves back into the match, tied 2 all.The hammer is handed back to Electrum. Will they be able to capitalise?
Progressive Score: 2-2.
Fifth End
01:40: Electrum is unable to capitalise after blundering their final stone. The hammer is still retained by Electrum as Kriegiersien is also unable to get at least one of their stones in the house.
Progressive Score: 2-2
Fifth End
1:56: Relatively uneventful end as the teams trade shots - Krigiersien makes costly mistakes with their guard stones and are unable to guard any of their stones.
2:00: Conan slides a good stone, knocking out Kriegiersien's last stone. Electrum gains a whopping two points! The hammer returns to Krie.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 2-4 Electrum
Sixth End
2:04: Steady, steady, steady, NOW NOW NOW HARD!!! For those of you who don't know, this yelling is pretty common, and ubiquitous in curling. As we are in the middle stages of the game, by this stage throats are tired. The rink is actually 45m long, so therefore this is necessary to communicate. That was Kriegiersien's skip yelling there as he makes a come-around, bypassing Electrum's stone to sit nicely behind Electrum's very own guard.
2:08: Two can play at that game replies Electrum as they also attempt a come-around as well, with Janus curling the stone mid delivery perfectly and the coordinated sweeping goes directly where they want it, knocking Krigiersien's just out of the way with a light tap.
2:13: With no more room left, Krie kind of concedes this point and gives another point to Electrum. Krie gives the hammer back to Electrum in the latter stages of this match.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 2-5 Electrum
Seventh End
2:20: Uneventful end as Kriegiersien tries to draw more points than the one, they desperately need more points to beat Electrum. They blank the end so as to retain the hammer.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 2-5 Electrum
Eighth End
2:29: Controversy rinkside as Electrum accuses Kriegiersien of deliberately sweeping debris underneath the stone to slow it down, yielding them a significant advantage. "What is this bullsh**" "Look see they're doing it," Peter yells. Play is stopped as the umpires deliberate. That stone has given Krie a significant advantage, by slowing down the stone, it didn't go on it's intended path and another stone is left in the house. Electrum have no way to deal with this as their strategy for this end falls into pieces.
2:32: Umpires rule that this is not deliberate to the outrage of the Electrum fans rinkside. Kriegiersien completes their end to draw 5-5 all.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 5-5 Electrum
Ninth End
2:40: Kriegiersien narrowly gains another stone after knocking Electrum one's out, it is now 6-5 with Electrum having the final hammer in the final end.
Progressive Score: Kriegiersien 6-5 Electrum
Tenth End
2:54: Kriegiersien has boxed Electrum in, Electrum has no choice but to knock their very own stone out of the way to do so.
2:56: Unfortunately Electrum overcooks it and all of their stones are out! With no stones left the score remains the same in the end with Kriegiersien winning after what seems to be a controversial match. It looks like after this match, Electrum now has a very slim chance of advancing through the finals as only the top team from each group will go through. What will need to happen is that Kriegiersien will need to lose one of their matches by a margin of more than 1 and Electrum to win all of their remaining matches. This seems highly unlikely that Kriegiersien has shown their might by defeating last year's quarterfinalists.
Final Score: Kriegiersien 6-5 Electrum

A STATEMENT FROM THE MONASTIC OLYMPIC COMMITTEE MEDIA SPOKESMAN

I, Fr. Vasily, am wishing to make a statement:

Is outrage!

Is outrage that Olympic organisers are doing the ignoring of strong position I am taking on sexism in Olympics that is stopping same-sex teams from full participating in glorious festival of sport known as Olympics.

Why are not we hearing more in protest from nations who are facing similar problems?

Is not being important issue of human and other sentient creatures rights?

Is surely not being right that Archregimancy is banned from luge relay just because the womens are not living in our fine nation! I am demanding immediate action immediately!

Some are saying "Fr. Vasily, I do wish you'd stop going on about this". Some are saying "Are you sure that you're not just bored since only one Archregimancy athlete's been in action over the last couple of sessions?"

To be saying this is outrage! Is outrageous slur on me, and is outrageous slur on Fr. Varlaam the Short of Breath, who came in fine humbling position seventy two in 500 metre speed skating final, therefore showing true devotion to Orthodox monastic principles. You just be waiting for the curling, then we will be doing the showing to you!

I am telling you, just because we are being against same sex marriage as matter of firm principle is not meaning that we are against sexual equality! No, no, no - I am pointing out to you the existence of Orthodox monasteries for both mens and womens; monasteries for womens are just in different country.

Fr. Vasily is also hearing of big Fr. Vasily fan club in Mainiacs; I am not sure how I am feeling about this.... Are Maineiacs good Orthodox boys and girls, or are they being heretics? Can anyone here be telling me?

Kriegiersien crisis
Image

The East is now complete in control of the Rebels. As we now know the SPOCK (Socialist Party of Communists in Kriegiersien) is behind the terrorist attacks and has rallied troops in the east. The attack has come to a stop, but we have battles in the near of Kerzenburg and Muhr. Their have been bombings on the taxation office, a taxi company in Schoenwetter and in Smalltown a lolly was stolen from a child.
Image

These Party, which was banished after Terrorrist attacks on the palace, has its exile in Bulgar Rouge and weapons from this nation have found in the equipment of the usurpers.

The Kriegiersien President is back in his bunker in Schoenwetter. He claimed that:
"..these invasion won't go unpunished. They won't drown Kriegiersien in red."

Rumours say that beside Bulgar Rouge, Darmen, Nassau-Hessen, Britonesia and certainly others secretly support the attacks. And Saintland, because you can always count in Saintland for something evil. Possibly even Saugeais is behind these attacks and it is discussed if the team should be withdrawn from the Olympics.

now to Sport....

We won't talk long about the results in this situation.
A win in Curling against some Electrons, in Womens Hockey the team lost against Estope and is out, because the Saurian officials suddenly decided, that not the head-to-head record, but the goal difference should prefered, so that Lymantatias Nymphs are through, if they don't die of exhaustion before.

The rest of the day there were no good results of Kriegiersien athletes, often because they were shoved by referees or disqualified because "they didn't like their looks".

We asked the Kriegiersien athletes:

Anditia Sucking at Saugeais? Just wait...
Jimmie Gal -- SAUGEAIS

While Anditia has never really excelled on the main stage as far as most competitions go (save from their top ranked tennis players #1 male Al Montis de Surmar and Top ten female Gulaga Grappo) Their performance at the IXth Winter Olympiad at Arçon has been despicable -- especially with the Anditon love for the winter sporting scene.

"I don't know what is happening to our team" Anders Dewat said following his dissapointing 6th place finish during the Men's 1500 m short track speed-skating qualifiers. "I guess we still do have our sprinters yet - and Mark (Van Mys) is favored to at least qualify - but still."

Derwat's statements have been justified considering the best chance that any Anditon has had at a medal has been normal hill ski-jumper Prot Marton, who placed 5th during the competition from over the weekend. Their hockey teams have been mediocre at best: the Women's team have yet to score during the tournament and the men, who came in ranked with a chance to advance past pool play, have only looked passable during one game.

Image
Despite all of this negativity, hope still remains as the curlers took to the ice for the first time yesterday. The highly touted men's curling team, known for their disgustingly ugly plaid pants, took their first game in stunning fashion defeating Renoa 11-9. Going into the 9th end, Renoa clung to a 9-8 lead, but a misplaced guard allowed Anditia's skip Torvald Glimm to place the two brilliant shots directly within the 4' ring allowing for a 2 point swig. Going into the 10th end, Renoa had the hammer, but failed to tie the game to force extra ends. When examining this result, remember that while flamboyant, the Anditon Men's Curling team is ranked much lower than the more conservative Women's team who have yet to start.

Additionally, looking forward, we have to remember that some of our best chances to hit the podium still have yet to compete - including Jules Van Zoppen who doesn't compete until much later (in the 30 km mass-start on March 18) and Ski-jumper Nestor Gregorva who will face qualifiers March 9th.

Good luck to all competitors moving forward!

Rather annoyed, Karol Hospod threw the well-thumbed magazine back on his night stand. Does familiar with his sport, so flashy and fast-paced, couldn’t expect that this reaction, generally speaking, already was a major outburst of anger for the tranquil farmer’s son from the plains of Trovne. He snorted before picking it up again, paging to the back. Thirty-two pages in shining full-colour had been a great treat from the nation-wide Sports Courier with an eye on the Olympics. Majestic action pictures from Markus Karamaki, Aato Parvi, Hanna Franzen and other Darya Nurmulas introduced the fans to the stars of the Buyanese selection and their respective sports. For some of the main events, the editors even had prepared a list of the most daring opponents from abroad. A great spread had been created about the venue, some highlights from the previous edition in City Centre, ... Everything was in great detail and with a font that kept the middle between sexy and distinguished, in as far as fonts are capable to. Short-track skating? A small box in the corner of a large photo from speed skater Nils Hagelin, listing the six participants, a short outline of the sport and exactly one ambitious sentence. “In the longer distances, Hospod and Borge might compete to proceed past the first round.” Might compete to proceed. Hospod put the paper down and grabbed his skates to leave for the Ice Dome.

...

“Participants in heat eight, please progress to the starting line.”

Calmly, Hospod skated towards the line and sought his spot next to six other opponents. Most didn’t ring a bell, although he had heard a lot of positive stuff about Lazzaro Cadena. The battle plan was as solid as simple. Try to dash to the lead and keep the pace as high as possible. Despite a lack of international experience, Karol had been on the ice enough to know that with a moderate field, it was better to exhaust the lesser participants before the line.
As said, as done. Only two laps in, he moved swiftly past Noonkester in the inside of the turn before going full throttle. When Keith Kolnon crashed behind him half-way, there even became a small gap between him and those battling for the second qualification spot. Without someone else breathing in his neck, Karol could focus on his pace and technique and easily kept the lead. He even had the time to lift his hands when passing the finish line, while a fierce sprint developed behind him.

...

“What did I tell you? What did I tell you!”

With a broad smile, Peter Kass waggled up to Karol Hospod, who already sat at the little bench on which the organisation had attached a little paper with ‘BYN’ printed on.

“Just follow that Gregoryisgodistani guy and you’ll put the money in the bank, mate.”
“Let’s just claim that that was the cause I qualified,” Kass grinned his yellow teeth, “and not Lorenzi tripping and keeping up everyone else.”
“Doesn’t change the little Q behind your name. Two Buyanese in the final thirty-two, who would’ve thought that...”
“Certainly not the press,” Kass mumbled.

Indeed, while the two were scoring a remarkable performance, it seemed as if every Buyanese who owned a ball-point had their attention to the men’s biathlon pursuit and the 500m speed skating. And yes, the strong performances from Dzidek Kreszlaw and Finn Wessel deserved their moment in the sun, even Karol and Peter would agree. Little did they knew at that moment that Wessel, a 23-year lout with long limbs who wasn’t assumed to make it far, was leading the pack after the initial run on the ice. But yet, it did sting that they hadn’t given away an interview so far or been asked about their personal views. Normally, a BRU assistant would be present but he hadn’t shown the tip of his nose so far.

...

What makes the difference between a quick shorttracker and a winning one? It would be a great question for an in-depth interview, Hospod realised once he was off the ice. The smile on his face was caused by the fact that the answer had flashed in his brain just three minutes ago, in the middle of a ginormous brawl which represented the second semi-final of the 1500 m. Contrary to the previous round, all those presents knew the name of the game now and most of them weren’t afraid to use their hands to stay upright.
With Roussaiu, Novikovic and other Entara’s the heat had plenty of favourites to break into the final. Yet, there was only one of them who really caught the attention of Karol. Georges-Mathieu Kim, hailing from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, appeared to be the only one who didn’t need to push and bounce into others to find his route to the finish. Hospod quickly decided to follow his pace, kept close to Kim in the turns, disallowing others to surprise him on the inside and eventually sled past the finish line in second position, ensuring a spot in the final.
Keeping a cool head on the ice. That makes you a winner.

...

"Will the participants in the final 1500 metres men please get on the ice?"

The metallic voice indicates it's time to go for Karol Hospod, to start his biggest race ever.

"Good luck, mate," Peter speaks, still a bit bummed over his own semi-final. He would've sold his mother (or at least his mother-in-law) this very morning for such a final result, a semi, but he still feels that if he hadn't touched that small cone, he could have challenged Boulton and Octo Dad.

Just when Karol starts to trample to the ice, an exhausted man enters the rider's space. He yells Karol's name and begs him to wait for a second.

"Hi, I'm *puff* Jonas Salmus, I'm here for *puff puff* BRU, we'ld like to have a little interview, live, before the final. My cameraman is still on his way here, *puff puff* equipment, you know and..."

Hospod stares to the audience. He has no hard feelings to the kid in person, but can't be bothered.

"You know what? Interview my mate there, Peter Kass. That's with double s. Semi-finals in the Olympics, man. I've got skating to do."

Subsequently, he walks up to the entry gate and skates into the Dome.

...

Five more laps. There's hardly space to cut past someone but Karol knows he has to try somehow. In fifth position, just behind Kim, he realises that only a wide manoevre can save his chances on a medal. But the pace is high... So high. Four more laps. A humble attempt on the outside but immediately, Singerman-Torres cuts him on the inside. Some complain about gender, maybe it's a Cassadaigua-thing, maybe in colaboration with Fr. Outrage, who knows, but she sure knows how to shorttrack. Three more laps. Sixth spot, this is hopeless if he doesn't do something. But he hardly avoids dropping out, let alone advancing now, Hospod starts to feel the pain in his legs. Two more laps, it's now or never and with an ultimate move he tries to move past Singerman-Torres and Kim on the outside. In the lead, Crossing touches the skate from the leader and almost trips. Although he avoids falling over with a spectacular move, it gives a strong Rikardsen all the space needed for victory. One more lap. Less than seperate skaters, it's a ball of skates and tight suits that floats over the ice now. Hospod somehow managed to squeeze himself between Crossing and Kim, but it's close. Last turn. Karol knows everyone expects the outside and his sixth sense, developed over the years, tells him that's the path Kim and Singerman have chosen. Instinctively, Crossing moves to the right side of the course and in that split second, Hospod takes the inside and places his skate as much forward as possible. He doesn't need to photo finish to tell him what he already knows...

Bronze in the Winter Olympics.

...

Quite angered, Peter Kass reenters the lodge of the Buyanese athletes in the Village. How many times has he said it? For f'ing sake. He runs up to the fourth floor, crosses through the hallway and pounds on the door.

"Hospod! You've fallen asleep again? Get up, we need to run!"

Gregoryisgodistan Olympic Roundup

Several Gregoryisgodistani athletes were on the slopes and ice yesterday. Let's take a look at what happened.

Women's super combined

Lady Soldier BBXBCAIISISISI finished in 19th place out of 76 finishers and about 20 DNFs. Her total time of 2:11.15 was over two seconds off the lead. Lady Soldier BBXBCAIISISISI said she was very disappointed with herresult, saying "I let Lord Almighty Gregory down today. It will not happen again."

Curling, Men's and Women's

Quebecois Commonwealth defeated Gregoryisgodistan's men's team, 7-6. The Broom Slaves led 6-4 heading into the final end, when the Commonwealth scored three stones to win the match. It was a very disappointing ending to what was otherwise a well-played match. The women lost to Fipino Federation 5-2.

Men's Moguls

Pervert Chaser BXBCBCB188247HHS finished 73rd out of 88 competitors in the preliminaries, meaning he would have to go through a run-off with everyone else who finished lower than 30th if he wanted to go to the finals. It seemed like he had no chance, but he actually finished 5th in the run-off with a score of 24.07, advancing him to the final. In the first round of the final, Pervert Chaser BXBCBCB188247HHS received a score of 23.55, putting him in 28th place. He needed to be in 12th place to advance. That was it for him. However, 28th place was much better than he expected.

Ice Hockey, Men's and women's

The men lost to Maineiacs, 1-0, dropping them to 1-1-0 overall. They are sitting on two points, four behind Maineiacs, but have played one fewer game. If the Ice Slaves win out, they might have a chance but it would requir Maineiacs to lose two of their remaining three games. The Lady Ice Slaves lost to Benjamin Mark 3-1, ending their tournament with a record of 0-3.

Luge, women's runs 1 and 2

This is the big story of the day. Lady Soldier BBC12345 had a decent first run of 47.27, but knew she could do better. Indeed, she did so in the second run with a time of 46.89 that was the second fastest in that run. Her overall time of 1:34.16 puts her just 0.02 seconds out of a medal position, behind Freni Malza of Vilitia. Meanwhile, Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Marria Jurdien is tied for 95th with a time of 1:37.84, while Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Henrietta Martinez is in 102nd with a time of 1:38.66 But Lady Soldier BBC12345 still has high hopes of becoming the first Gregoryisgodistani medalist ever.

Short track speed skating, women's 500 m

Lady Soldier 91938HBGDBAQQ finished third in heat 6 with a time of 43.763, advancing her to the next round. Unfortunately, in the semifinals she was disqualified for interfering with Laurie Kesselar of The Licentian Isles. She was in first place in the heat before that incident. The Gregoryisgodistani federation lodged a protest, but to no avail.

Short track, men's 1,500 meters

Pervert Chaser GGG8888ASH finished first in his heat with a time of 2:13.355, more than two and a half seconds ahead of Peter Kass of Buyan for first place. Meanwhile, Soldier MZBBBB finished 6th in his heat, ahead only of Terence Corbett, who was disqualified. In the semifinals, Pervert Chaser GGG8888ASH finished fourth in his heat and did not advance.

Preview of Today

Here is a preview of today.

Cross-country skiing - Men's individual sprint qualification

Pervert Chaser XBBCBABS will compete in qualification today in an attempt to reach the final. He is Gregoryisgodistan's best cross-country skier over short distances. He could contend for a medal, and should almost certainly advance out of qualification. It would be a major disappointment if he fails to do so.

Curling, men's and women's

The Lady Broom Slaves have a bye today, as do the men. So no curling for us.

Figure Skating, Pairs Short Program

Lord Almighty Gregory and Cleffie Martinez, fresh off their strong performance in the team event, will compete in the short program tonight. After their team performance, they are one of the gold medal favorites. Of course, Lord Almighty Gregory is God, so he could easily cheat if he wanted to, but he is a fair and merciful God, so he doesn't. Dancer BBAUSUYTD will also compete along with his wife, Dancer KAJSHD. Meanwhile, Dancer AUIDDFF will compete with his sex slave, Sex Slave OADU. Neither of them expects to seriously contend for a medal.

Men's Ice Hockey

In a heavily anticipated match, the Ice Slaves will take on Saintland. Will the enemy crushers get revenge for their comrades who were executed by the Sanctii authorities? Will any Sanctii players be crushed to death? It should be exciting to watch.

Luge: Women's runs 3 & 4

Lady Soldier BBC12345 is in good position to maybe win a medal. She is just 0.02 seconds off pace for a bronze, and could even move up to silver or gold. The watchful eyes of a nation will be upon her tonight. The other two entrants have no chance of medaling at this point.

Snowboarding: Men's halfpipe qualification

Youth B884HDAJA, just 15 years of age, is considered a dark horse to win a medal. He will look to qualify for the finals tonight. So will 17-year old Youth CBABBBAKAK888283, but he probably won't.

Speed Skating: Men's 500 m final

Soldier BAUYT77376 has an outside chance of winning this event, though he will likely need to produce a personal best. Soldier ATS88888 and Soldier XVC8183 have little chance of medaling. Soldier BAUYT77376 has joined the other memebrs of the military who announced they will fly home to Gregoryisgodistan after competing to fight the war against Hicana. However, with Gregoryisgodistani airspace currently closed, he may be forced to fly via Gregory Llama Land.
Gregoryisgodistan, population 75,000,000. All citizens are required to worship Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state, as a deity.

The Report from Arçon :: Mimiatoraa Golden as Hockey, Speed Skating struggles continue

Vilita & Turori are now 3 for 3 getting onto the podium in the Biathlon events as Stinro Mimiatoraa claimed gold in the Mens Pursuit.

Image
Mimiatoraa, the Bronze Medalist in the sprint competition earlier in the games was second best on the shooting line to propel him to the top of the heap, claiming gold by less than a second over Torgeir Ærinbjørnsen. Mathias Gardevoir of Taeshan was the only Skiier who had no penalty time but he did not have a competitive time on the skis.

Mimiatoraa will have two more events to compete in, the 15km Mass Start where he will surely be favored to complete the Medal Trifecta and the Mixed relay event.

The performance of Mimiatoraa and women's athlete Tikiipiikii Amazela in the Biathlon has single handedly put The Union of the Affliated Lands of Vilitan Origins atop the official medal tally, being the first to claim 2 gold medals over the opening three days of competition. Unfortunately, however, The Biathlon is the only competition in which Vilitan athletes are having any success so far

Image
The Vilita & Turori Ice Cat things have been eliminated from the Hockey competition after a 1-0 defeat to Quakmybush. Vilita & Turori got the help they needed from Etsylv who defeated Northern Inertia 1-0 in the other Group 10 matchup. However, Atlantian Oceania regional rivals Quakmybush edged out the Ice Cat Things making advancement impossible for Vilita & Turori as the two teams placed higher than them in the table, Quakmybush and Etsylv, still have to play each other. Vilita & Turori's women's team had already been eliminated and is likely back home in Atlantian Oceania already, just 3 days after arriving for the Opening Ceremony.

Turori's Marmo Fraka gave the Island Emirate something to cheer about by qualifying for the Men's Moguls Final, placing 8th after the first run. However, Fraka struggled on the second run and would finish the competition 12th, out of medal contention.

There is a spot of hope for the Union of the Affliated Lands of Vilitan Origins, however, in the Women's Luge competition where Freni Malza will go into the final two runs just over a tenth of a second behind the leader Rochelle Florent of Vaugania. Of course, Vaugania have thus far accumulated the most medals of any color with 4 total, and another gold would see them jump back ahead of Vilita & Turori in the medal standings. Malza will have tough competition to get on the podium however, as the top 16 sliders are all within half a second of the lead.

Íþróttafréttir - Ólympíuleikarnir Sérstakt
Loðmundur Skæringursson - Olympic Village, Arçon

Joy and heartbreak on day 3 of the winter olympics

Let's start off with the joy. Muriburiland have more medals! Ånje Rikardsen showed everyone why he is one of the finest short track speed skaters in the world in the 1 500m at the Arçon National Ice Dome yesterday. Rikardsen, who won both of his heats to get to the final, had a fantastic run and finished in a time of 2:12.964 to take the bronze. The final was watched by a record television crowd for short track speed skating back home and he is now a national hero and the first medallist in short track. Unfortunately I couldn't find Rikardsen to get his comments on his fantastic result. Presumably he was out partying hard and was probably passed out in his room. Rikardsen wasn't the only Muriburi representative in the 1 500m, Tarfur Sæisson and Zander Judolfsøn both came fourth in their respective quarter final heats but were not too disappointed as neither were expected to make much impact and they were both seen embracing Rikardsen after the final.

Earlier in the day out of the city and in the Saugeais National Forest, history was made in the men's 12.5km pursuit when Torgeir Ærinbjørnsen had a fantastic race and made up for his earlier disappointment by grabbing the silver medal. He said that he is "absolutely ecstatic. I just can't believe it. It feels so much better to get a medal than I thought it would and then some!" Aðalþegn Fjölvarsson, who is one of the favourites for the 15km mass start, finished one better than in the 10km by coming in at 22nd.

The Women's ice hockey team lost 3-2 against San José Guayabal but were not too upset as they have still qualified for the last 16. The Men's curling also got underway with the Muriburi boys putting up a spirited fight but eventually falling 10-7 to the lads from Nassau-Hessen. And over in the luge, Venus Børredatter has left herself in a great position after making two great runs and finishing the day in 5th. "I don't want to jinx it" she said, "but I'm feeling really calm and am now seriously thinking that I'll be able to get a medal tomorrow. I'll just go out there trying not to think about the occasion and just do my best." Wencke Øyvinddotter has her work cut out after finishing her two runs down in 101st.

In the Short Track Speed Skating - Women's 3000 m relay, none of the skaters shined finishing third in their heat and will thus play no more part in the competition. In the women's 500m short track speed skating, Ævör Vinjardóttir finished 12th in her quarter final heat while Torfheiður Sveinmardóttir, who was of the favourites for the gold, finished an extremely disappointing 8th her semi final heat.

Now for the big heartbreak. Kilmar Lagesen made the runs of his life in the men's 500m speedskating and finished an incredible 17th. Ulf Ulfsen also skated the best he ever has and finished with an absolutely brilliant time of 1:09.96. The problem came when Antoine Carpentier of Thatius and Dorde Stepjanovic of Rovegia also finished with a time of 1:09.96. In the rules of speed skating if that happens then the judges look at the thousandth of a second and Carpentier was found to have completed his runs in 1:09.960 exactly. Stepanovic completed his in 1:09.962 and Ulfsen his in 1:09.963. It was incredibly tight at the top and he in fact only finished .03 behind the gold medal place but when he realised he missed out on the bronze by just .001 seconds he was absolutely inconsolable. As the times came up on the screen he immediately burst into tears and even though the other athletes to their credit tried to console him he just left the ice and went to the back distraught.

Muriburiland have a good chance of winning a couple more medals in the coming days but even if we don't, the athletes have still surpassed all expectations and will return home as sporting heroes to cheering crowds.

EDITED due to re-scoring the 1 500m short track speed skating.

Vulshainian Olympic News Coverage: Winter Olympic Games IX

Vulshainian Female Hockey Team Qualifies!

Bonjour everyone! This is Yermolai Vadimaron, reporting live from Arçon in Saugeais, where this year's Winter Olympics are taking place, for Vulshainian Confederate News and Media Network (VCNMN)'s Winter Olympic Games IX Coverage.

Vulshain's Women's hockey team has qualified after beating Fipino Federation when their match went into overtime. Once again, Vulshain's female hockey players have emerged victorious. Now they have to face off against the equally skilled players from Nassau-Hessen, who despite losing their match against the team from Vettrera, still qualified. "Nassau-Hessen's team has a lot of strong defensive players who know how to use their opponent's offense against them. Vettrera got lucky with that last second shot," Clark Skllye, spectator from Vulshain, told VCNMN when asked to comment on Nassau-Hessen's team. Seems Vulshain's players will have to pull out the stops and bare their fangs in order to win this one. This is one match that will certainly test their resolve and training.

Meanwhile, Vulshain's athletes hope to earn another medal in either the Women's 500 m speed skating and or the Women's individual normal hill Ski Jumping events. Also, Vulshain will take part in the pairs figure skating, a sport that Vulshain excels in; let's keep our fingers crossed that they do it this year. Our biggest rivals in figure skating: Vekaiyu. Vekaiyuns are known for their dedication and love for figure skating and they clearly show it. Vekaiyu's Premier Ikrisia Levinile has spoken highly of the Vekaiyun figure skaters in past competitions, so you know that they're the ones to watch out for!

This has been Yermolai Vadimaron, reporting live from Arçon in the Republic of Saugeais, for Vulshainian Confederate News and Media Network (VCNMN)'s Winter Olympic Games IX Coverage, and wishing our athletes good luck out there as they seek to earn more medals, especially the gold ones!

OOC: "It's SCIENCE" is a daily educational program on Vaugania Public One, the only government subsidized channel in Vaugania.

It's SCIENCE!!!

Eyes across the world are on Saugeais as the IX Winter Olympic Games are now in full swing. The Olympics have made its way into every home, onto every street corner, and now, into every classroom. The Olympics are now being used as a teaching tool in many classrooms in Vaugania and around the world. This is of course being Olympic SCIENCE!!!

Earlier in the Olympics we saw John Christiansen, Jerome Ampere, and Rostislav Ipatiev take to the skies in the Men's ski jumping event. Now we are on to the women's event where Frida Langslet and Shea Gillespie both have a shot at adding to Vaugania's medal tally. Now that the athletes have your attention, let us show you the SCIENCE!!!

Ski jumping is, for the most part, about distance. This means that if an athlete wants to find their way onto the podium, they will need to figure out how to maximize their jump distance. Let's look at the first bit of SCIENCE(!!!) involved. For every force, there is an equal and opposite reactive force. When you watch a ski jump, you will see the jumpers pump their legs at the end of the slope. This creates downward force upon the air below the jumper and gives them lift.

Another important aspect of ski jumping is air speed. As the speed of air increase, its pressure decreases. Jumpers try to position themselves in the most aerodynamic position possible to cut through the air like a knife due to making the air around them lower in pressure. With the air around them of lower pressure, the air below them is at a higher pressure, thus giving them additional lift. However, as always, gravity will eventually win the day and bring the athlete back to Earth.

Of course, aerodynamics isn't the only thing that plays into a ski jump. The athletes' body size also comes into play. Larger ski jumpers come off of the slope with more speed than a lighter one, but they aren't anywhere near as aerodynamic as a lighter jumper. SCIENCE(!!!) now shows that lighter skiers have an advantage over heavier ones. The lighter skiiers have less volume, reducing drag and it takes less upward force to lift their lightweight frames skyward.

Thanks you for tuning into "It's SCIENCE!!!".

Siolæsĉiga Iebe Mirit Saitoa was not having a good day. The curling match against Kelssek had gone sportingly, magnificently, until the final stone of the final end. The Isulans were leading, 5-4, and Iebe had only this final stone to throw. Of course, it wasn't like the throw would be an easy one, no, Kelssek had two stones in scoring position. The throw would need to be dead-on perfect, the sweeping rapid and precise, the planning meticulous. It was going to be difficult indeed. Two stones knocked out, however, and Isula ĝe Ru was spurred into a prime qualifying position. Iebe pushed off, already shouting before the stone had left her hand. She tapped it slightly, trying to curl it in to where the end of a broom marked the only place this stone could go. Ten ends. Ten ends were all concentrated into forty-two pounds of held breath, of furious sweeping and hope. As the stone neared the house, the silence became deafening. The stone knocked against one Kelssekian stone...but, it was a poor angle. The stone moved, but not out of the house, and missed the second target by inches.

It was what had been argued to be the most important match for the Isulan women's team, as well as for Kelssek, but you wouldn't know it. The grim faces of the Isulans tried hard to disguise their unhappiness at the breathtaking 6-5 loss they'd just suffered. Isula ĝe Ru, if they wanted to leave these games with a gold medal, could not stand to lose a single game from this moment until they boarded a plane home. They knew this. It was written in their eyes as they wished Kelssek good luck. The two teams would not meet again. It was written in their footsteps as they strode, or slid, off the ice, in their body language as they tried to walk as confidently as they could from the rink.
It was, as far as the nation was concerned, written in them

[OOC: Apologies for the length, quite busy today. Please assume all the athletes who competed had complex internal monologues during their competition, insert some creative imagery, and picture Samuél Forĉu Saramaria grumpy somewhere with a water bottle full of vodka and a heart full of regrets]

"I'm Jenny Jones..."

"...and I'm keeping quiet..."

"Oh come on, Kev!"

"After the Opening Ceremony, I think it's best that I keep quiet."

"Kevin, they're paying you to comment and report on the Winter Olympics! Stop being quiet!"

"OK."

"So, how are our Winter Olympians doing?"

"Well, we had one in the top hundred of something the other day!"

"That's good!"

"But Elsa Blige has gone missing."

"Missing?"

"Yes. I've looked through the results for the 500m Short Track Speed Skating Qualifying. She's not on the list."

"She hasn't gone missing, though."

"Oh?"

"Well, she'd better not have. She's in the long track version of the 500m Speed Skating tomorrow."

"So she might not turn up for that, either."

"No, actually, I spoke to Elsa earlier, and she explained her situation to me."

"So Elsa, you've been practicing for the Speed Skating."

"Yes, Jenny. It's strange skating on ice, but I'm taking to it like a duck to water. Albeit frozen water."

"Indeed. You're entered for the 500m in both Speed Skating and Short Track Speed Skating. Which one are you looking forward to the most?"

"I've been watching the Short Track. I thought it would be the same as the longer track, but it is practically a wrestling match to see who gets to the front! I'm not having that. I've asked the organisers if they can take me out of the draw, and they've agreed. As it is, I'm just going for the Long Track, which is simply a time trial. Much more up my street!"

"So you're confident?"

"Well, as confident as you can be having only been skating on ice for a few weeks. Hopefully I can get quite a way up the order and do Schiavonia proud. Plus, without doing the wrestling event, I won't be quite so tired tomorrow. So, everyone back home, wish me luck!"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

"So, there you go, Kev! That's why Elsa wasn't in the results - a late withdrawal."

"Ah, right. Thanks for clearing that up, Jenny."

"So, fingers crossed that Elsa can do better than the best we've done so far, namely Kerry Jones' 86th position in the Biathlon Sprint. Come on Elsa!"

"Come on Elsa!"

"And Kevin - promise me that you won't make up any more facts!"

"It's a promise."

"Really?"

"Really."

Fr. Vasily is also hearing of big Fr. Vasily fan club in Mainiacs; I am not sure how I am feeling about this.... Are Maineiacs good Orthodox boys and girls, or are they being heretics? Can anyone here be telling me?

Maineiacs House, Olympic village--

Meeting of Women's Hockey Team

"So what do you think? Should I ask him to bless the team before the round of 16?" asked Elena Lagunov.

"I don't know that he will," said Karla Karsten. "most of us aren't Orthodox."

"He might. He might insist on conversion, but he might do it." said Lexi Rake.

"My grand-mère would spin in her grave." said Claudine Cloutier. "She always held that the Catholic church was the only true church."

"Wait, aren't you Buddhist?" asked Erin Bullock.

"She'd really spin if she knew that." said Claudine.

"I don't think there's much harm in asking." said Women's coach Mari Kaiser. "The worst he can say is no."

"Non, mon entraîneur. The worst he can say is a half-hour rant about how 'Is Outrage!'" said Claudine.

An Open Letter to Father Vasily the Heavily-Accented

Dear Father Vasily:

My name is Elena Maksimovna Lagunov. I am a Forward for the Maineiacs Women's Hockey team, and a member in good standing of the Church of St. Athanasios in Maineiacs City. I would ask if you would possibly be willing to bless our team before our next game. Hockey is our national sport in Maineiacs, and it would mean a lot to me and my teammates to have your blessing. I must be honest with you, Father. Only I and one other member of the team are Orthodox. The rest are as religiously diverse as our nation; where we see diversity as a source of national pride. I felt it might be alright to ask this of you as the Archregimancy has no Women's team, and therefore there is no conflict of interest. Also, I do not know if you are aware of your popularity in my country. We are at once a laid-back and yet reserved people, so we find your "joie de vivre" to be exciting and refreshing. If you do not feel you can bless those of other faiths, I understand, but I hope you will consider granting my request.

Yours faithfully,
Elena Maksimovna

This is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek roleplay, not to be taken seriously, meant to account for today's earlier rescorination and my skater's subsequent disqualification.

Crescentia Koening toed up to the starting line, ready for the race. She is a competitive speed skater, and she knows her strategy well. She led from behind, waiting until an opportune moment to pass from the outside into the first or second position, where she would then qualify for the next round of the competitions. The strategy worked well for the first heat. She was paired up in Heat 3 with 12 other skaters. The starting gun went off. Bang! She took off, initially settling for seventh place, three places before the qualifications. She waited, waited, waited for her moment. It came when Sandra Malk of Buyan, sitting in sixth place, made a slip, almost taking out herself and fellow Transalpine athlete Corinna Waxweiler. Koenig leapt at the opportunity, striking past the momentarily slowed skaters. The outside pass put her right in second place, ready to qualify.

The next run was pretty good. She used the same strategy to pass around the other skaters, this time finishing first, qualifying her for the finals. She then went to bed, thinking she was one of Transalpine Republic's best medal hopes. Boy, was she wrong.

Three hours later, Saugeain organizers knocked on her door.

"What is it?" she snapped. "You just woke me up!"

"Mrs. Koenig?"

"That's MS. Koenig!"

"Well, oh, sorry, Ms. Koenig?"

"What are you bothering me for?" She almost spat the question out at them.

"Uh... well ... the heat you skated earlier....?

"What about it?"

"Um... it wasn't really official. That was just practice."

"Who do you think you're fooling with that? Are you the Mafia or something?"

They flashed their Saugeais organizer badges.

"Are those forgeries."

"Ma'am, why would they be forgeries?"

"I don't know... maybe you're trying to kidnap me! That story is so ridiculous!"

"But it's true, ma'am. Two athletes were not entered, and they are asking that the heats be skated again."

"OK. Fine. I'll get there myself, thank you very much."

She slammed the door on them.

Twenty minutes later, she was at the venue in her equipment. Before the race was scheduled to start, she took a crack at the judges.

"Who do you think you're fooling with this? There are no new athletes in this heat! That story was ridiculous! A fraud!"

The judges looked from side to side. "Not everybody's here yet," one said.

"There's the roster list," Crescentia said, pointing to the big screen at the top. "There are no new athletes!"

By this time, she was in a big tizzy.

"What are you trying to do here?"

The judges took another look at one another. They made some murmurs.

Once all of the athletes had arrived, they made an announcement. "Crescentia Koenig of Transalpine Republic has been disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct," their voices boomed around the rink.

"What the hell is this?" she yelled. She stomped out of the arena.
