IC Information about Taijan:

Taijan is a small island country located in the southern reaches of Esportiva. It enjoys a humid maritime climate, with hot summers and cool, wet winters. The island can be divided into three basic geographical and cultural regions; the North Coast, the South Coast, and the Interior. The North Coast is the center of manufacturing and fishing in Taijan, and includes the cities of St. Christopher, Nova Algiers, and Nova Tunis. North Coast residents have a typically working-class mentality similar to that found throughout the multiverse. The south coast is wealthier, with a greater gap between rich and poor, and tends to be more liberal. The South Coast includes Coco Bay and its suburbs and districts, including St. Jermaine and Nova Tangiers; St. Ignatius; and New Zion. The Interior is predominantly rural, and tends to be the most conservative area of Taijan as well as its least populated. The only major city of the Interior is Montem Virid.

Cannabis is legal in Taijan, and its use is widespread, analogous to alcohol in many places. Conversely, alcohol is tightly controlled, though there is no legal drinking age, and can only be purchased and consumed in designated establishments. Public intoxication is a felony offense that can result in deportation for non-citizens. Firearms are also banned, and Taijan has no standing military nor armed police. Policing is primarily done by the Taijani Federal Police, who have broad-based power to make arrests without probable cause, though major cities (Coco Bay, St. Christopher, Nova Tunis, and Nova Algiers) have their own police departments. Taijani jurisprudence is primarily aimed at reconciliation between the offender and the victim or the state, and has broad, almost paternal, authority. Taijan's sexual culture is often perceived as fast and loose, but sexual assault is taken very seriously, and alcohol is considered a date-rape drug in the same category as rohypnol or ketamine.

Super-Llamaland National "Llamaland Nationals" Team

After a championship at the Trofeo de Paz and a Ro16 finish at the International Basketball Championship, the Nationals are looking to add more shiny things to their small but growing trophy case.

Style: +2.5
Offensive Style: Excels at transition, good at ball movement
Defensive Style: Man-on-man

GUARDS
PG: Niko Montoya (19 Yrs Old, Talahita Basketball) #8
SG: Salvador Perez (29 Yrs Old, Vargas Basketball Club) #4

Recap: A pair of slashing guards with Hicanan heritage. Montoya's 6'0"/175 frame doesn't matter to the dozens of guards he got by at Talahita, playing floor general for a 49-25 team that won second last season in the entire league last regular season. He had 15.4 PPG and 6.1 APG. He can keep up with the world, but the issue is: can he guard bigger guards? Perez at 6'3"/210 may have to cover for him as he's technically a point guard out of position. Perez is an established scorer and distributor and should have a big tournament.

Backups

Lars Hudson (23 Yrs Old, New Llama Wizards) #00
Michael Morris (32 Yrs Old, New Llama Wizards) #1
Jay Russell (30 Yrs Old, New Llama Cyclones) #26

The three backups all from New Llama are an interesting mix: Hudson is an eccentric who is a pure passer: a mere 9.1 points a game with 11.5 assists a contest. Morris is a scorer: 21.8 points a game. And Russell is a defensive stud whose offensive is a bit raw. All excelled off the bench at the Trofeo de Paz.

Forwards

Kristian Camayen (29 Yrs Old, Apple Valley Basketball) #9
Richard Reynolds (28 Yrs Old, FC Vargas) #11

Camayen is a sniper for the team: a 46% shooter from long-range. Reynolds is a rebounder and defender with 1.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.

Backups
James Purte (33 Yrs Old, Overseas) #6
Jordan Alonso (21 Yrs Old, Overseas) #20
Alex Herar (30 Yrs Old, FC Vargas) #29

Purte is physical. Playing overseas, he lead the league in personal fouls with 4.2. He has fouled out in eight playoff games, including games six and seven of the finals one year. He's lead three leagues in fouls. Herar is a pure scorer. Alonso serves as a backup center, where he excelled last year, and will be the first man off the bench.

Centers

Rick Jordan (27 Yrs Old, Dinschria Basketball) #33
Jordan loves his hometown of Dinschria. The big man is a specialty rebounder and defender with a raw post game. For some reason, he's 7-for-9 all time from 40 feet or further and 1-for-21 in all other three-point tries.

Backup

Rupert Jones (15 Yrs Old, New Llama Public High School No. 65) #15

Talented center with fantastic post moves. Troubled history with the cops, and, ironically, foul trouble.

New Wolfopolis Wolfpack - National Basketball Team
Offensive Style: Fast-paced, points-off-turnovers and high-percentage shots
Defensive Style: Turnover-based
Overall Style Mod: -1
Captain: Merlin Garrett
Head Coach: Edward Selby
Asst. Coach: Leland Chase

After a promising IBC, the Wolfpack is participating in the first ever World Hoops Showcase. The team was led by two all-tournament team honorable mentions: power forward Truman Tapia and shooting guard Merlin Garrett. In IBC 13, New Wolfopolis got second in the green group and advanced past the group stage, but was eliminated in the first round by the Qazox Wolves. They were not discouraged by this result, they've been training ever since. One major change from the IBC to this tournament is Jesse Burgess was removed as captain of the team and replaced by Garrett. Other than that, you'll see the same Wolfpack team. I personally think the Wolfpack can do a lot of damage in this tournament. They're a good team with a lot of potential, and a smaller environment like the WHS is a lot less intimidating than the big IBC. I'll be back with a preview after group draw.Written by Javier Johnson, International Sports Correspondent, Lupinia Tribune

Lupinia Tribune - Sports
Group H Preview - WHS
by Javier Johnson, International Sports Correspondent
johnsonj@lupiniatribune.nw

The Group Draw for the World Hoops Showcase occurred earlier today, with New Wolfopolis pitted in Group H. Here's a preview of all four teams.
New Wolfopolis - Highest ranked team in the group, best finish at IBC. Prediction: First in the group.
New Koln: Second ranked in the group. Fourth place finish at IBC in White Group after going 3-7. Prediction: Third.
Numbers Puppet: Wow, three "n" nations in the group? Might as well just call it group "N". Anyway, Numbers Puppet, a close ally with New Wolfopolis, is debuting their basketball team in this edition of the WHS. Not much is known about them, but I hear they're good. Prediction: Second.
Perlasilangan (pronounced: however the hell you want): Our communist Filipino friends join the party with a hard to pronounce name, a non-"n" starting nation (ruining the fun), and an untested basketball team. Prediction: Fourth.

None of these teams should be taken lightly, however, and New Wolfopolis will have to work hard to beat any of these teams. Best of luck to all nations competing.

Groups Drawn For World Hoops Showcase; Lzherusskia Given "Every Chance Of Success"

COCO BAY, TAIJAN: After seeing the groups drawn for the upcoming World Hoops Showcase, Lzherusskia captain Milo Zotijasnov was dismissive of the opposition his team will shortly be facing, and proclaimed himself "confident" that the team could pull off some shocks.

"I think, given the seeds, we couldn't have been drawn in a better group," said the 28-year-old, fresh off a championship-winning season with LKC Korzin. "I don't rate Patistan at all, I think it's ridiculous that they're as high as they are, and the longer I can avoid having to take a team that plays ponies seriously, the better."

The team selection for the tournament has been criticised in recent days, with some accusing head coach Franz Rusakov of favouritism towards the league's bigger teams, but Zotijasnov was passionate in the defense of his coach: "Franz has got nothing to apologise for in his selection. If the best teams have the best players and we want to win, then the only sensible thing to do is to pick the best players and let everybody else suck it up. Trying to force him to take inferior players just so the team's not dominated by Korzin and Vsevintseva is a dumb idea and a really stupid way to act."

The comments will not endear Zotijasnov to anybody else, but Korzin's small forward has grown used to being hated: "The fact is, people hate me because I'm a lot better than they are and they can't handle that. I'm not going to apologise for that. I've been working hard all my life to get to where I am, and I'll be damned if I let bitter and jealous people get to me. If I can help Lzherusskia win, I'm going to do it, no matter what it costs or how many people it pisses off."

The World Hoops Showcase kicks off in one week's time, and Lzherusskia will start their campaign against the seventh-seeded Patistan, about whom Zotijasnov said "They're just not a good team. I think the only reason they're rated at all is because they've been around longer than we have, so it's not really going to be much of an upset when we come out on top. I'm going to be disappointed in myself if I can't drop at least 25 on them personally."

Other teammates were more diplomatic in their comments. Dominik Brechkovsky, point guard for the title-winning Korzin team who is widely expected to start for Lzherusskia as well, said "Look, I love Milo and his intensity, but he can be a complete bonehead sometimes. I don't know if he doesn't realise or just doesn't care, but he's just given Patistan a lot of bulletin board material. They're going to be fired up next week, and I think everybody we face is going to want to shut Milo up."

When asked for his prediction, however, Brechkovsky was just as confident as his teammate: "I do think Milo's right in one aspect. We're a better team than our lack of ranking says we are, and we're also a wildcard. People don't know what we're capable of, what we'll be like to face tactically or what our strengths and our weaknesses are, and that will play in our favour. I don't think we're going to win, but I do think we can at least make it out of the group stages.

You can find more information about the tournament and Lzherusskia's full rosters on our website.

Hicana Storm

National basketball team of Hicana

A quick guide to feather elves: obviously smaller than humans, but technical skill is off-the-charts. Above-average speed and agility, but pushed around easily. To get a rough indicator of how old a feather elf is in human years, divide by 1.5.

Starting Lineup

PG: Ellis Duncan, human, 29 yrs old, 6'2"/200
SG: Nostrodamus, male feather elf, 25 yrs old, 4'6"/95
SF: Nick Duncan, human, 32 yrs old, 6'9"/225
PF: Christina Carlson, human, 26 yrs old, 6'6"/215
C: Brad Sanchez, human, 29 yrs old, 6'10"/250

Bench

PG: Sierramyste, female feather elf, 42 yrs old, 4'2"/80
SG: Mendellus, male feather elf, 53 yrs old, 4'4"/78
SF: Michael Moreno, human, 23 yrs old, 6'7"/220
PF: Sara Jimenez, human, 19 yrs old, 6'6"/200
C: Bobby Hanson, human, 32 yrs old, 6'11"/250

Defensive Style: Aggressive
Style Modifier (if applicable): +2
Captain: Gary Hale
Colors: Red and White Home, Blue and White Away
Arena: National Arena (doubles as hockey stadium)
Arena Location: Londinium

Roster

Starters

G #3 Caleb Burns, 5'10, 24 - dished out a career-high 6.9 assists in NABA last year, decent jumper but real game is driving and dropping dimes
G #17 Dominic King, 6'2, 29 - Star of the team and NABA MVP, King can shoot, handle, pass, and play D, his success is critical to success of team
G #10 Danny Flowers, 6'3, 26 - decent defender, he can really pop the 3-ball, don't leave him open
F #24 Bryan Conner, 6'7, 30 - Conner's back-to-the-basket game is somewhat limited, but he handles and shoots well for a forward, undersized
C #56 Gary Hale, 7'0, 34 - Hale was NABA Defensive Player of the Year last year, 15 and 12 kind of guy

Reserves
G Rey Benavides, 6'4, 25 - Benavides does two things well: defend, and rebound, offensive game is weak
G Clyde Pope, 6'1, 32 - backup PG knows exactly what to do at any moment, veteran presence extremely helpful off bench
G Stephen Knight, 6'0, 26 - Knight finally solved his shooting woes last season, took next step by becoming deadly jump shooter, still needs to work on his D
F Cody Lewis, 6'6, 24 - fiery competitor, temper gets him in trouble, great outside shooter and defender
F Kent Griffin, 6'9, 35 - Griffin is a traditional back to the basket player, good in short spurts when team needs to go big
F Alphonse DuBois, 6'8, 27 - DuBois is a banger, plays a physical defensive and offensive game, not afraid to throw his weight around
C #44 Ibrahim Mbaraza, 7'2, 25 - Sudanese refugee has spent the last four years in National Basketball Academy refining his skills, defensive force, offense severely limited

Playing Style

Nova Anglicana is not known for producing extremely tall players, and its young history means that they've had to take what they can get as far as athletes. As such, they've adopted a quick, aggressive, team rather than a particularly big one. Their three-guard lineup often means they are quicker than their opponents, but can be mismatched on the defensive end. Therefore, they play a variety of defenses, "junk" or otherwise. Their main defenses are man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup zone, but have been known to play a trapping 1-3-1, 3-2, or a box-and-one, with Flowers chasing the opposing team all over the court. They also employ a 1-3-1 full-court press, with Hale to play goalkeeper in the back. Their game relies on creating turnovers and turning them into points, so they run fairly often. When forced into a half-court situation, they will dump the ball down to Hale and let him work, or try to draw their defenders out of the lane so that somebody can drive. They like to run the pick-and-pop with Conner, and will run Flowers off of multiple screens to get him open for threes. This is their second official international competition, following their Round of 16 loss to WHS hosts Taijan.

The Group D Preview

-by contributors Jerry Bayless, Kyle Ivling, Chris Paslov, and Derek Smith

Hicana

Jerry: Miserable little territory. Who thought playing "feather elves" that stand four-foot to four-six in basketball was a good idea? prediction: 0-3
Kyle: They're annoying, and worse for Storm fans, they don't have the rank to beat the Nats and Kintratar. But maybe Ukrainya? 1-2
Chris: They're annoying, but they could manage a win against Ukrainya. Those feather elves are freaking quick. 1-2.
Derek: Doubt they'll even score. 0-3

MASS PREDICTION: .5-2.5 (rounds to 1-2)

Ukrainya

Jerry: They're almost as bad as Hicana, but at least they're smart enough to play tall people. 1-2.
Kyle: I'll just say what Jerry's saying. 1-2.
Chris: They have a pretty good chance to lose to Hicana. 0-3.
Derek: They might score, unlike Hicana. 1-2.

MASS PREDICTION: .75-2.25 (rounds to 1-2)

Kintratar

Jerry: They're good, but we're better. 2-1
Kyle: Well, I'll be the derp here and call for a Ukrainya win over Kintratar. 1-2
Chris: Kintratar's not what Jerry and Kyle are calling for. They're dangerous. 3-0
Derek: I don't know. I guess I'll pick them to lose to the Nats. 2-1

MASS PREDICTION: 2-1

Super-Llamaland

Jerry: We can troll these idiots. 3-0
Kyle: Don't want to offend, but Super-Llamaland can beat up their opponents in the group stage. 3-0
Chris: Good for Hicana and Ukrainya, but not Kintratar. 2-1
Derek: Yeah, they'll be fine. 3-0

MASS PREDICTION: 2.75-.25 (rounds up to 3-0)

FINAL PREDICTIONS:

1. Super-Llamaland
2. Kintratar
3. Ukrainya
4. Hicana

We'll see who is right in a couple of days!

The squad for the showcase will compete in Group C, alongside Taijan, the hosts, ranked 2nd overall, Dark Star Republic, ranked 11th, and Costa de Ouro, the other unranked team. This didn't affect rankings, it's used as a parameter, maybe in the next tournament will be created a new rank system.

Group Drawing Announced! LRI to play in Group E!

The World Hoops Showcase was announced yesterday and the LRI was placed in the Group E.

Group E (Karl van Doren Fieldhouse, St. Jermaine)
The Andromeda Islands (1)
The Lunar Republic Islands (15)
Texacano
United Republic

The LRI is ranked 15th in the world, and has the number 1 team in the tournament in the group that they must defeat, the Andromeda Islands. Texacano and the United Republic are also in this group. Here's Coach Rick Coltino on playing the Andromeda Islands,

"I think it's good that we have the #1 ranked team because now we can show off who we really are. We're playing the #1 team and win or lose, it helps us for the future. But we're gonna go out there and we will win that tournament!" He excitedly said.

"Should be exciting, we're 15th ranked and we got the #1 ranked team in our Group and we will beat them. We gotta play hard and play close with them. Plus there's other games to worry about. But I think we can pull it off." Captain David Padgett said.

The group draw for the World Hoops Showcase was announced, and the Maroon Lions were drawn in Group C. This means they will play Taijan, Dark Star Republic, and Costa de Ouro. Today, we delve into each team and make our predictions.

Schedule
v. Dark Star Republic(11)
v. Costa de Ouro(UR)
v. Taijan(2)

Prediction:
Game 1: v. Dark Star Republic
Score Prediction: NNA 78-95 DSR
Predicted Record: 0-1

The Republicans will overwhelm the Maroon Lions with experience, though Muteng Dok will have a strong game and the boys will gain valuable knowledge from this game. Though the Republicans are still unknown to us, we are assuming they bring a strong game, given they are ranked eleventh in the world.

Lupinia Tribune - Sports
WHS Preview
by Javier Johnson
johnsonj@lupiniatribune.nw

Well, I already did my group H preview, but now I'll try to predict the whole tournament. Here goes nothing.

Group A: Nova Anglicana did well at IBC and is the 3rd ranked team in the entire tournament. They should do well. Prediction: Nova Anglicana first, The Royal Barangay second.

Group B: This will be a tough group. Patistan is the highest ranked, but there are some young, hungry teams in this group that could just as easily qualify. Prediction: Lzherusskia first, Yttriba second.

Group C: Similar to Group B, there are two qualified, experienced teams, and two untested, anxious teams. This will be a fun one to watch. Prediction: Taijan first, New North Aqmuland second.

Group D: Super-Llamaland already has a minor basketball tournament trophy in their case, the Trofeo de Paz. Second will be a battle. Prediction: Llamaland first, Kintratar second.

Group E: Top-ranked The Andromeda Islands will have an easy time in this group, but there will be a fight for second between Texacano and The Lunar Republic Islands. Prediction: Andromeda first, Lunar Republic second.

Group F: NexxusDrako was the surprise team of the tournament at IBC, and they are pitted up against three new teams. Prediction: NexxusDrako first, Zhenovia second.

Group G: The Sova Empire and Vettrera have experience, while the other two will put up a fight. Prediction: Vettrera first, The Knox Valley second.

Group H: New Wolfopolis is the highest ranked in the group, New Koln has experience as well, and the other two are untested. Prediction: New Wolfopolis first, Numbers Puppet second.

Round of Sixteen: I'll seed the teams as the following: 1 The Andromeda Islands, 2 NexxusDrako, 3 Nova Anglicana4 Super-Llamaland, 5 New Wolfopolis, 6 Taijan, 7 Vettrera, 8 Lzherusskia, 9 The Royal Barangay, 10 The Lunar Republic Islands, 11 Yttriba, 12 Kintratar, 13 Zhenovia, 14 The Knox Valley, 15 New North Aqmuland, 16 Numbers Puppet. So...
1 The Andromeda Islands over 16 Numbers Puppet
2 NexxusDrako over 15 New North Aqmuland
3 Nova Anglicana over 14 The Knox Valley
4 Super-Llamaland over 13 Zhenovia
5 New Wolfopolis over 12 Kintatar
11 Yttriba over 6 Taijan
10 The Lunar Republic Islands over 7 Vettrera
8 Lzherusskia over 9 The Royal Barangay

Quarterfinals: 8 Lzherusskia over 1 The Andromeda Islands
2 NexxusDrako over 10 The Lunar Republic Islands
3 Nova Anglicana over 11 Yttriba
5 New Wolfopolis over 4 Super-Llamaland

Semifinals: 8 Lzherusskia over 5 New Wolfopolis
2 NexxusDrako over 3 Nova Anglicana

Finals: 2 NexxusDrako over 8 Lzherusskia

There ya have it. I predict NexxusDrako to win it all. Good luck to all teams.

Also, our sports teams are the Wolfpack, not the Wolves.

"Yeah, New Wolfopolis is a good team."
"No, that's not what I meant! It's--organized!"

RP Permissions: Limited. You can make up what you like regarding general flow of the game and storyline, but please don't assign hard stats or injuries to my players. Also, please don't use RL photos and say they represent my team; using RL photos of your own team is of course not for me to permit.

Style of play: Basketball in The Dark Star Republic is known to be team-oriented, unflashy, and technical. Stereotypically, Dark Star players lack speed and size compared to their international equivalents, and were notably outmuscled and struggled to keep up with the pace of play at their first international outing, IBC13. There is a strong emphasis on fundamental skills, meaning even the big men are competent from outside and the free throw line; the DSBL has one of the highest average free throw percentages in the world.
