Message from the Kannapian National Tennis Association

The Kannapian National Tennis Association is proud to announce that the competitor count for this event is at 50 people. The last Kannapian International Tennis Open hosted 28 athletes, we are proud of the spike in attendance! We have had to make adjustments to the schedule to accommodate this number of competitors. The Second and Third Round and the First Round of the Semi-Finals all have a free pass space. This space is something new to Kannapian Tennis, as it had to accommodate the one person that would not be playing that day, so that another person would not have to unfairly play twice. For this space, the #1 competitor that HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY been in the free pass space will take the space and advance to the next round. Also note that for reasons, Kannapian athletes WILL NOT be allowed to take the free pass during any rounds.

Welcome to Kannap, be safe and have fun!
Good luck to all during this competition!

OOC: Yes, I see no issue with that.

However, from here on everybody, keep OOC posts in the Sign-up/OOC thread. This thread is for IC posts.

Dispatch to Anditon National Herald Anditon Athletes Arrive in Kannap
Janna Valdis -- KANAP
Al Montis de Surmar gasped as he noticed the Kannapian countryside shortly following the arrival of the Anditon athletes competing in the Second Kannapian International Tennis Open (KITO - pronounced "KEE-tow" by the athletes)- the young (19 years) Anditon tennis player had never travelled past the Meridon Regional borders for any type of international competition. Gulaga Grappo, one of his elder (27) teammates also arriving had assured the youngster that his nerves would quickly diminish once he was on the court.
"I feel lucky and excited to be here competing in the Second KITO" Montis de Surmar said as he was called to the front desk to check-in at the Grand Copenhagen Hotel.
These two make up the most hopeful chances for Anditia in the KITO following Eloise Lumbo's tearing of her achilles tendon only a short six months ago- this tournament marks Lumbo's first competition since her fluke injury while baking a quiche on the ever popular Cooking with the Stars television competition. Despite her injury, Lumbo still is attempting to prove that her 31 year old body still has what it takes
"It still hurts every now and then, but I think I should be able to provide a decent competition," she said stretching her right ankle as she made her way to the hosting hotel's desk.
The competition in the KITO should be stiff with international superstars competing for the $150,000 (320,000 glabor) purse, but the Anditon cohort should prove to do decently amongst the competitors. Matches begin Friday and continue until the championships on the 9th.

The Copenhagen Tribune
KNN: Sports

The first foreign athletes for the Second Kannapian International Tennis Open are beginning to arrive in Copenhagen, Kannap. Their tournament this upcoming week is taking place in our beautiful capital. This event, the Kinterten, as Kannapians have begun to call it, is the second of its kind. The first Kinterten took place last July, and the next one was scheduled for September. However, when the Kannapian National Tennis Association (KNTA) cancelled it, Kannapians were furious. They petitioned for another one to be held and they argued for months against the KNTA, which decidedly released their president and hired a new one, Briana Powell. She immediately decided to host it this January, the 3rd-9th to be exact. Nudging the international volleyball tournament that is to be held in Copenhagen back by a week.

She will be competing in the tournament this week, and returns as the reigning winner of the Kinterten. She has stated that she is proud of the showing of 50 athletes from around the world, including the King and Queen of Kannap themselves. It is good for a nation that recently made tennis its national sport, and the KNTA is gearing up to push tennis in Kannap to its fullest potential. However, last week the KNTA had a vote on making this the last Kinterten to be held, something that KNTA President Briana Powell was against doing. She got her wish, however, when nearly 78% of Kannap's citizens signed a petition to hold the next Kinterten in Oslo in April. Thus, they pushed the KNTA to begin planning the Third Kinterten already.

The King and Queen will be coming down to stay in the Grand Copenhagen Hotel starting tomorrow until the end of the tournament. They believe, since they are competitors, that they should have the same accommodations as the other competitors and not stay in the Royal Palace. The final Kannapian athlete competing is Kevin Strartt, and this is his last tennis competition before he retires from tennis.

Some important information for all competitors from the Kannapian National Tennis Association:

The entirety of the tournament is set to be outdoors as of right now. There is an unusually warm period in Copenhagen, Kannap the next two weeks, and we are going to take advantage of it. The temperature and weather predictions by the Kannapian Weather Service are below, changes will be announced. In the event of inclement weather, the rounds for that day will be moved indoors, if this is the case, it will be announced the day before.

Philip Hasselstrom vs. Luciano Zaccardino IV
Zhenovia's own Philip Hasselstrom has drawn 6-year old Liciano Zaccardino IV in the first round of the Second Kannapian International Tennis Open. It's not expected to be a close match, as Hasselstrom should win in straight sets. Philip Hasselstrom is rather happy with who he has drawn, but he hopes to not be criticized when he inevitably makes Liciano cry.

Percent Chance of Victory for Hasselstrom: 95.6%

Elaine Foyner vs. Emmy Young
The Zhenovian youngster, Emmy Young (12 years old) is matched up against 69-year old Cenian tennis player, Elaine Foyer. Elaine Foyer is expected to win, but anything can happen with the up-and-coming Emmy Young. This should either way be some great experience for Emmy Young, and should hopefully motivate her to continue in her quest for stardom.

Percent Chance of Victory for Young: 25.3%

John Smith vs. John Galt
Galt is a decent tennis player, but John Smith is not very good. Expect Galt to win in straight sets. John Smith's outlook is not the greatest for this competition.

Percent Chance of Victory for John Smith: 12.2%

Stefanie Lopez vs. Colonel Selav Tukerawan
Vakolic's Colonel Selav Tukerawan seems to be lacking the proper skill set to compete with Zhenovia's top ranked female tennis star, Stefanie Lopez. Again, this should be over rather quickly, as Stefanie Lopez should win in straight sets.

Percent Chance of Victory for Stefanie Lopez: 89.9%

The mood inside the Vakolicci aircraft, as its engines knifed it through the skies on its approach to the airport was tee and expectant.
The 4 tennis players, all extremely different, were seated on4 well-stuffed leather armchairs, a group of collared male and female slaves serving them food and drinks as they passed between them and the numerous coaching staff seated around.

The activity stopped as the pilot, with the offiscious tone that all pilots love to make ordered the group to put on their seat belts as the plane began its gentle descent. Luciano Ziccardino looked out towards the city they were about to touch down in with an air of disappointment, but it was Martin Shearman who echoed his sentiment before the young boy could get a chance.
"A bit...grim," he said slowly. "It's as if they aren't trying to look impressive, as if style doesn't matter as much as it does to civilised people."
"Oh give us a break," Colonel Tukerawan said agitatedly. "I've been in worse places than this, trust me. This is luxurious comfort compared to some of the southern provinces of the Haven."
Mira did not look impressed at that comment and thrust her head back angrily.
"Well I can tell you," she growled, "That this is far worse than the southern provinces, and you all know my home province is Strasnac...about as southern as you'd like to get."
None of the 4 spoke further: the tention and excitement had got them in very bad mood.

Only one of the contestants seemed relaxed: Luciano Zaccardino IV: the only representative of the autonomous Kingdom of Celeria in this entire contest.
The 6-year old was a picture of Celerian prideful ease: he sat back slowly eating his way through a guerta (a type of savory pancake with a spiced meat filling), not bothering with the arguments going on around him until the aircraft touched down.

The arrogant Vakolicci pilot opened the door himself, hoping to attract the attention of one of the many TV cameras, a lot of them from the Vakolicci channel Omnisport and get his face on international tv, beforing allowing the team and their coaching staff the opurtunity to descend into the cold Cannapian day.
"What?" Martin Shearman and Luciano Zaccardino IV said in unison.
"The temperature," Mira's imperious voice struck out, is biting.

Meeting up with the service staff who had been arranged to escort them effortlessly through the airport, they entered the waiting limo and proceeded leisurely to the hotel.

Vakolicci arrogance fueling bookmakers profits, TVH warns

Tennis for the Vakolicci Haven, the Vakolicci national tennis association, has warned hopeful,if deluded Vakolicci against gambling on an all-Vakolicci last 4.
"It has been the TVH policy to send a wide range of players to this competition," TVH press secretary achel Jonson warned yesterday. "This includes some players, such as Luciano, who have had very limited experience in international competitions, are going to the Kannapian open this year. Gambling on this is just fueling bookmakers profit margins."

When questioned, Vakolicci male number 1 Martin Shearman, 18, expressed admiration for the spirit of the Vakolicci supporters, 90,000 of whom are expected to be making their way to Kannap this year.
"Tennis in the haven has seen a marked increase in support," he told the Irosii, "And I'm hoping the Vakolicci team can make a very posative showing this year. We've had a very solid training season, and I'm hoping to bring some of that confidence to play well in Copenhagen tomorrow."

Skill (0-100):0

Ricardo Toli is not a new face either. He used to play for Bryonie Islands but since there has be a change of government, he think Britonisea will do better and pay him more money. So he comes to this country and tries to earn a leaving for himself and his family. Lately he has not been to well. So if he opts out of the competition he is probably going to the hospital that day. His managers did not want him on the court but he insisted.

Lance Mance is the strongest man out there! Maybe. He has the agility of a leopard but he has not been praticing because it was his 25th birthday. No, Lance aint new. He has came first in The Britonisean open and since then, been trying to work his way up. Lance Mance is #1 Britonisean player and Most likely to be the only Britonisean standing. Meaning he will be the only Britonisean in the competition. BUT. You never know especially when there is great players from different countries. Those players come from the host, Kannap. Grappo, Montis de Surmar roll; Lumbo flaters in opening of K

Postby Anditia » Fri Jan 03, 2014 12:16 pm

Janna Valdis--KANNAP

"You know, when it comes down to it, my achilles actually feels kind of lousy. I guess it'll be a longer fight back to fitness than I thought," Eloise Lumbo said with an air dissapointment following her opening day loss to William Renshaw of Tobys Great Britain. Poised for what was going to be her triumphant return to the top of her game, Lumbo was expected to compete but falter during the Second Kannapian International Tennis Open (KITO) - but the faltering wasn't supposed to be in the opening round. Unfortunately after battling back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to come close at 6-5, Renshaw overpowered Lumbo in the final frame. "My backhand move just wasn't clicking the way it should - he would serve and I just couldn't move fast enough to put enough power on my shots," Eloise said following her loss. "Hopefully I'll be able to come back when the games actually count."

Unlike Lumbo, Gulaga Grappo, Anditia's hope in the KITO rolled, defeating Daniek Ralkus of Felbah. The first set opened perilously for Grappo: Ralkus got back on court with a clear plan: attack, attack, attack, and try to take the time away from Grappo. Every shot was hit full power. Surprisingly, Daniek's attack was worth a 3-1 lead in the first set. Despite this initial attack, Gulaga was able to power back methodically building to eventually tie the game at 4-4. Folowing a rare double fault in during the tie-breaking game, Gulaga took control to never look back winning the first set 6-4.
"He scared me for a bit there, but I was able to persist and overcome" Gulaga said between gasps for air between sets. "Lets hope that I can hone in my serve to take advantage of his slow footwork."
And that is exactly what she did - dominating the hopeful Ralkus 6-3 with a combination of powerful serves and clean attacks.

Finally, young upstart Al Montis de Surmar dominated Nank Limenaz of New Koln in straight sets. Al found some rhythm to work with in the early stages of the first set. After serving three aces and causing a total of 12 unforced errors, he was able to finish the second set in a similar manner.
"I was a little nervous before the game set out, but I calmed down and was able to blast past Nank." Montis de Surmar said following his dominating win. "I will probably go out and practice a bit later today with Gulaga - just to keep my legs loose. She and Eloise have been a great help for me during this entire process."

Later this evening, Al Montis de Surmar faces Logan Andersson of Kannap (a local favorite), Gulaga Grappo faces Tom Collins of the Andromeda Isles and Eloise Lumbo faces an uphill battle against Fred Stolle of the United Republic.

sports daily
An interview with: Martin Shearman

Sports daily: So. Martin: your predictions for this tournament were extremely posative. What happened?
Mr. Martin Shearman: Well, the honest answer is I have no excuses. My backhand was poor, I made 4 unforced errors, that's more than I normally make...and yes, I've just got to try far harder next time. Obviously the mood in the Vakolicci camp isn't the best at the moment, but I'm going to make sure I make the most of the training sessions I've got before the next game, and Who knows, I might benefit.

Sports daily: How do you see the nature of the Vakolicci supporters following your result? I mean...court invasions are not very common in this sport, and tennis hooliganism is unlikely to get a posative reaction.
Mr. Martin Shearman: If you want my honest answer, I've no opinion on the subject that most people would like to hear. The police here need to realise that they're dealing with a race of people who fight, and I mean...we fight a lot.
So, when you've got 35000 Vakolicci supporters trying to do something as these guys obviously were, then it's a pretty stupid idea to stand in their way trying to fend them off. So overall, no sympathy for the opposition at all. And if they want to do it again, I don't care what trouble I get in, they can go off and do it. I won't be stopping them, not that I could.

The sports daily: Many people today have said that you're not as professional as you have been in recent years. What do you say to these people?
Mr. Martin Shearman: They're correct. I don't think I was at all professional today. Luciano shook the other guys hand, and he's 6 years old. But well, I needed to get away, and if the best way of doing that was to turn around and walk off with a smile, that's what I'll do.
RIP Vakolic, 08/08/2009-29/12/2013, unjustly deleted.

Philipp Hasselstrom (Zhenovia) 6 6
Luciano Zaccardino IV (Vakolic) 3 2

Zhenovia's Philipp Hasselstrom as expected was able to defeat 6 year old Vakolic tennis player, Luciano Zaccardino IV. The 23-yr old Zhenovian phenom looked rather solid in this match. Even taking it easy against the youngster, he was still able to pull out a victory.

Elaine Foyner (Ceni) 5 5
Emmy Young (Zhenovia) 7 7

Emmy Young made her parents proud, as she was able to take down Elaine Foyer in two sets, with both of them ending 7-5. Her chances of winning were pegged at roughly 33%, and she was able to pull out a victory. It was an impressive showing for Emmy, and she has a very bright future ahead of her.

John Galt (The Andromeda Islands) 6 7
John Smith (Zhenovia) 4 6

John Smith played John Galt of The Andromeda Islands a lot closer than anybody was expecting, but ultimately fell in straight sets 6-4, 7-6.

Stefanie Lopez (Zhenovia) 6 5 6
Colonel Selav Tukerawan (Vakolic) 2 7 2

Well, Colonel Selav Tukerawan, the Vakolic tennis player, certainly made it more interesting than expected by taking the second set 7-5. However, Lopez easily handled Selav in the first and third sets winning 6-2 each time.

After the first set of matches, the Zhenovia tennis players went a collective 3-1, with only John Smith, the weakest player of the bunch falling.

Lumbo Falls, Montis de Surmar Advances as #1

Postby Anditia » Fri Jan 03, 2014 5:25 pm

Janna Valdis -- KANNAP

"My game is just clicking I guess. I really have to thank my mentor Gulaga, without her, I don't think I could have snagged #1 seed. It was a well fought match and I think that Kannap has one heck of a tennis playing king." A humble Al Montis de Surmar commented following his afternoon bouts in the first elimination round of the Kannapian International Tennis Open. Despite his humble attitude, Montis de Surmar has earned himself the #1 following a defeat of Logan Andersson King of the host country Kannap. Montis continued his domination with a commanding serve throughout the first set, taking the more experienced Andersson off guard. Logan's experience shined through during the second set as he took a seemingly insurmountable lead of 4-1. Unfortunately for the hometown favorite, Montis de Surmar was able to turn his game around to come to an eventual 5-5 tie. His battle back was completed after an winning his 6th game following an exhaustive 12 deuce point zapping all of the remaining energy from Andersson.

Eloise Lumbo lost two close matches, but couldn't keep up with the younger, fitter Fred Stolle of the United Republic.
"I just don't think that I've healed enough to compete at the international level as of yet." Lumbo stated as she returned to the Royal Copenhagen Hotel. "I'll be back... it may be a bit yet, but I'll be back"

Finally, Gulaga Grappo squeaked through to the second round as the 12 seed following a defeat of Tom Collins of the Andromeda Islands. Grappo was not as sharp as she had been in the Exhibition round competition with four unforced errors which allowed Collins to provide for a closer game than she had wanted.
"No matter what I did, he seemed to adjust to my strategies" Grappo lamented. "I noticed his backhand was a bit weak, so I focused on it - but then it became his strong suit, so I focused on the short game. I guess I made enough of a lead to hold on, but it was much closer than I had hoped."

Al Montis de Surmar has earned the #1 seed and will receive a bye in the second round. Gulaga Grappo has earned the #12 seed overall and will be facing #15 Emann Akhtar of Patistan.

KNN: Sports
Interviewing: Briana Powell

KNN sports reporter, Marvin Solomon: So, Briana, how do you feel after that first round?

Briana Powell: Well, I was expecting a little better from our Kannapian athletes. Especially since the king and queen were competing in the tournament. The King and Queen, as well as Kevin, have been eliminated. Once again, after the first round of the Kinterten, I am the only remaining Kannapian athlete.

Solomon: So, you are calling this tournament the Kinterten? I have heard Kannapian citizens calling it that as a favored name, but is that the name that the Kannapian National Tennis Association is adopting?

Briana: Yes, I believe so, it is easier to say. We need a more easier to pronounce name since we are going to host more in the future.

Solomon: So, how do you feel for the Second Round?

Briana: Well, I am ranked 5th, so I am feeling good here. I play against John Galt during the second round, and I am sure I can beat him.

Solomon: Who do you think will win this tournament?

Briana: I believe my friend Fred Perry from Tobys Great Britain will win this tournament easily. It came close between us in the First Kinterten, but I believe he has this one won, and I know he has what it takes.

Solomon: Thank you Briana.

Stefanie Lopez (Zhenovia) 6 6 6
Briana Andersson (Kannap) 2 7 3

Lopez took down the Kannap tennis player, Briana Andersson in three sets. Stefanie Lopez was cruising after winning the first set rather handily, 6-2. It looked like Briana Andersson had some momentum after taking Set 2 by the narrow score of 7-6, and then the first two games of the third set. However, Stefanie Lopez then battled back to take the next 5, before dropping one, and then winning the sixth. "Briana put forth a valiant effort," Lopez was quoted as saying, "props to her for hanging in there."

Emmy Young (Zhenovia) 6 3 6
Bunny Austin (Tobys Great Britain) 4 6 3

Emmy Young is quickly becoming a tennis hero to the young girls of Zhenovia, as she advanced out of the first round at the Second Kannapian International Tennis Open. After taking down Bunny Austin of Tobys Great Britain 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, a huge grin crept across her face. When approached after the game for comment, she talked about her performance briefly, before saying "hello" to her parents and her friends back home.

Botack Andiam (Ceni) 7 6
John Smith (Zhenovia) 5 3

John Smith lost a second match here at the Second KITO, and goes home after going 0-2, the only two blemishes on the record so far for the Republic of Zhenovia. "Oh well," he said after the match, "guess it's time to go back home." Needless to say, John Smith will not be seen in any international competitions in the future.

Philipp Hasselstrom (Zhenovia) 5 6 6
Elaine Foyner (Ceni) 7 3 1

After Emmy Young took down Foyner in straight sets 7-5, 7-5, the much more skilled Hasselstrom actually dropped the first set to the Ceni tennis player. However, he was dominant over the next two sets, winning 6-3, and putting an exclamation mark on his victory, taking the final set 6-1. "I am just so grateful for this opportunity," Hasselstrom said after the match, "it's truly been a blessing to come here and compete to represent my country." And he's done that very well so far.

With both Emmy Young and Stefanie Lopez falling in the Second Round, only Philip Hasselstrom remains for the Republic of Zhenovia. Hopefully, he can bring home some hardware for the nation. Zhenovia is nonetheless proud of its athletes in Emmy Young and Stefanie Lopez, and both (especially Young) will partake in the parade that occurs once everyone's back home. Both Young and Lopez will remain in Kannap to cheer on Hasselstrom. Philip Hasselstrom will face Mire Zenawi, the same Vakolic tennis player who eliminated Emmy Young from the tournament. Hopefully, Hasselstrom can take down Zenawi not only for himself, but for Emmy Young, and the entire Republic of Zhenovia.
