Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. Rugby is the 3rd most popular form of football in Saintland. It is nowhere near as popular as soccer or gridiron. It also is not as popular as baseball, ice hockey or basketball. Rugby is roughly as popular as handball in Saintland. A RL comparison would be soccer in the US. The Saintland rugby team doesn't have the high expectations that come with representing Saintland in any of the big 5 sports. The Saintland National Rugby League Nines Team has 5 brother combinations on the roster, although only one of them in the starting lineup. This team lacks a star player. Unlike the usual Sanctii captains, Desidenius is not a star player. He is a veteran who captains the St. Petrus rugby team. Desidenius is known for his veteran leadership, but he is merely a good player. If the Sanctii perform well, it will be through team play, not through the dominance of any single player. They are relatively tall players and most of them have played gridiron at the youth levels.

After day one here in the Royal Stadium, the ground is electric, with the championships under way. Teams have been very even so far, and we saw the very first draw of the cup, with Canete and Uitbregen taking each other to a 18-18 draw in the opening match of the tournament. The 45 minutes that we have seen of rugby has really opened up Canete, as the preparations for day two of the competition are underway. James Kidd, the team captain for the Canetian Rugby team did state this after the third match of the day, "Our Boys played with pride out there today, to here the crowd singing God Defend the King, and then the tradition of the hymn Land of our Fathers played before our matches it was amazing on the day, and the championship has been very good, I am glad that I have gotten the chance to play for my country and to wear the regal blue and white." James Kidd, not only the team captain but the kicker for the team, helped kick several conversions on the day, helped Canete out to an early start, and a good thorough showing. Canete looks to be looking towards the future with this challenge underway. Tomorrow, matches 4-6 will be played, and with the tournament underway, things can only be looking up.

After the second day of competition, the national team of Canete, in its first foreign challenge has established the early lead, and a certainty of making the Super Cup Final, which would be a great deal for Canete. The team captain was unavailable for comment after the game, as was the King, and the Queen, but passed along a general sense of excitement, the Royal Family attended the matches today, and enjoyed a victory in the opening match, but two consecutive draws between the nations of Saintland and Chalkia. It was an okay start for Canete, but if they are going to make the final, they will need a win, and a draw or two wins to secure their final berth. Chalkia and Uitbregen still appear to be in the hunt for the final, where as the point differential is the key to securing a second place finish for Saintland, who have a -42 after 6 matches Canete overall had done well, in the first 90 minutes of play, taking on several heavyweights in the world of rugby and coming out on top, its amazing Today has been wonderful if you cheer for the royal blue and gold, and with the final day, coming before the final on Christmas Day, could this be the beginning of a new era in the Canete Rugby League?

King Paulus XV grants special exemption for National Rugby League Nines Team

(SP) Today, the King of Saintland, Paulus XV the Great and Wise, granted a special exemption, which will permit the National Rugby League Nines Team to compete in the final of the Canete Super Cup Challenge on Christmas day, should they reach that point. This is an unprecedented exemption from Saintland's traditional ban on international sports participation between Christmas and the end of the year. "I have chosen to grant an exemption to the National Rugby League Nines Team today because they have played fairly well so far in the Canete Super Cup Challenge. God's Kingdom is not much of a rugby nation and have not performed especially well in past Rugby World Cups, either under rugby league or rugby union rules. I am hopeful that Marcus Desidenius will finally reach his first final as the rugby captain. If he does so, I will permit the team to compete on Christmas Day, even though they would normally return to the Kingdom to celebrate the birthday of the One True God's only begotten Son, in the traditional manner in which it has been celebrated since St. Petrus founded the True Church nearly 2000 years ago." - King Paulus XV

The Kingdom of Saintland is world-renowned for our excellence in several sports, with gridiron being the most important. The sport, allegedly invented in the Free Republics, is our national sport, especially when played under Saintland Rules, as it is in the Maple Leaf Bowl, which we won. We also won the Arena Bowl way back in January and it seems like we will remain the final Arena Bowl champions. We are also a great soccer nation, which qualified for the last legitimate World Cup, was the legitimate elected host of World Cup 67 (OOC: Not really, but I did lose the host vote by the smallest margin ever.) and are also the reigning Olympic Gold Medalists. In basketball, we made it to the final 4 of the last IBC and we are also the reigning Olympic Gold Medalists. We are the reigning Olympic Silver Medalists in ice hockey and we eliminated the wicked nation of Cassadaigua from the World Baseball Classic while they were the hosts. We also won a Handball World Cup last summer and are one of the elite nations in the world at figure skating, boxing and wrestling. By wrestling, we mean the real variety, not that fake stuff from the Free Republics. However, we have yet to accomplish much of anything in rugby, where we have 2 subpar performances at 2 world cups and nobody even remembers how we did at Esportiva's trainwreck of an Autumn Festival, which we were invited to, for some reason. Now, with 2 wins, a draw and 3 defeats through 2 days and 3 more fast-paced matches coming up tomorrow, we have a shot of finishing second, but we must play better tomorrow if we want a shot at Canete in the Super Cup final.
