13th International Basketball Championship
Hosted in The Dark Star Republic, International Democratic Union

If you are new to NS Sports or have not competed in a tournament like this before, I recommend reading the stickied guide.

Roleplay guidelines

To participate fully, it is recommended you submit a roster. You can look over others for ideas, or look at the last tournament, but the most important details to include are the names of your players, the name of your team, and your RP permissions.

RP permissions state what liberties you allow other roleplayers to take. These could include:

picking scorers, and other stats (rebounds, assists, etc.)
injuries, technical fouls, ejections
“godmoding” - which generally means highly unrealistic events, usually for comic effect
anything else you want to be respected.

It is recommended they not be too restrictive as you will make it difficult for others to play against you. Please also make sure you read your opponents' roster and RP permissions before roleplaying. All players must respect their opponents' RP permissions, and failure to do so may lead to penalties.

You can then start roleplaying. Ideas include newspaper articles, match reports, magazine features, cartoons, team blogs, tourist reports, or ongoing storylines.

The tournament's in-character game play uses FIBA rules; you can see a guide to the differences from NBA and NCAA rules here. The most important one is the game time – 4 x 10, rather than 4 x 12. This is reflected in xkoranate, which generates scores appropriate to this shorter duration. Rules not related to game play, such as uniform numbering, will not be enforced.

Each team will play each other team in their group twice. Each group has the following schedule:

The groups were drawn by seeding the teams in order of current IBC ranking points (unranked teams are marked "UR") and then splitting them into 6 pots of 8 teams. Those pots were then randomised. The drawing was held at the Palace of Oranges in Harkult City, hosted by DSBC personality Jejanna Wilson, former national basketball star Paul Offenbeat, and Under Secretary for Sports Perry Gweln.

All games will be played in The Dark Star Republic, meaning there is no "home"/"away" division. It is assumed that, rather than being played concurrently, all games are played one after another at the same location, though I will leave it up to individual players to decide how to roleplay this.

Notes

Prince Ioannes is the younger brother of Prince Petrus, the star quarterback for the Saintland National Gridiron Team who was recently injured by the Equestrian States in World Bowl 20. He is the older brother of Prince Josephus, the goalkeeper for the Saintland National Ice and Field Hockey team that won the silver medal in the Winter Olympics and finished 3rd at the World Championship in Field Hockey. He is also the older brother of Prince Josephus's twin Prince Andreas, the captain of the Saintland National Soccer Team that made such a strong first impression in their first World Cup cycle. Prince Ioannes is the tallest Prince of Saintland, so he became a basketball player. He is already widely considered the best big man ever to play in Saintland's basketball league and he is the 2-time reigning league MVP. His only weakness is the 3-point shot. Although the Saintland National Basketball Team is often slow to get back on defense, Prince Ioannes is a great defensive player when he is in position. Axius is a good center, except for his poor shooting on foul shots. Basically, the Saintland National Basketball Team plays 1960s style basketball, with the center as the main scorer, but the other players will get shots throughout the course of a game. The arena's capacity is nearly the entire population of St. Petrus and the total population of Saintland is between 500 and 600 thousand. This team advanced to the Quarterfinals of the last IBC, where they were eliminated by the apple-tossers from Cassadaigua. They are also the reigning Olympic Gold Medalists in the sport and will expect to play up to that standard at this IBC.

After a victory at the Trofeo de Paz last year, the Tigers are locked in to improve their small but impressive basketball resume. Full of talented and raw players, the team is expected by all in Super-Llamaland to go deep. They still are, however, an underdog in a group with better teams in it.

Recap: A pair of slashing guards with Hicanan heritage. Montoya's 6'0"/175 frame doesn't matter to the dozens of guards he got by at Talahita, playing floor general for a 49-25 team that won second last season in the entire league last regular season. He had 15.4 PPG and 6.1 APG. He can keep up with the world, but the issue is: can he guard bigger guards? Perez at 6'3"/210 may have to cover for him as he's technically a point guard out of position. Perez is an established scorer and distributor and should have a big tournament.

And Russell is a defensive stud whose offensive is a bit raw. All excelled off the bench at the Trofeo de Paz.

Jordan loves his hometown of Dinschria. The big man is a specialty rebounder and defender with a raw post game. For some reason, he's 7-for-9 all time from 40 feet or further and 1-for-21 in all other three-point tries.

Born into squalor in the slums of New Zion, Kenny Ubrik grew up with very little besides his height to go on in life. When basketball reached the island in the mid-nineties, he was a young boy, but he seized onto it, playing against all comers and practicing hours every day to hone his skills. He would eventually lead the College of the Messiah to the first-ever Taijani collegiate basketball championship, and later started four years at Zion University before signing to Lion of Judah, where he revolutionized the professional Taijani game.
Known as a very physical player and for his tendency to foul out at inconvenient times. Unafraid to dunk over even the most physical competitors.

#42-Zhi Matsuoka-PF-Sao Paulo Mets (NSI)-24 y/o-198 cm
Matsuoka is almost the definition of a late bloomer, a bench-rider in college who stepped up and made the varsity team at Zion University as a freshman after growing nearly ten centimeters between the ages of seventeen and nineteen. Nevertheless, he retained some of his basic ball-handling skills, as well as a keen awareness of the court, making him a phenomenally versatile player, though he usually plays on the block anymore. He was still an underrated player going into the inaugural Campionato Esportivano de Pallancesto, but his standout performance as a substitute in that contest won him a contract with the Sao Paulo Mets of the Northern Sunrise Islands, making him the first Taijani basketball player to play overseas.

#31-Tyrone Suggitt-SF-BBC Nova Tunis-26 y/o-195 cm
A perennial workhorse both for the national team and the Cavaliers, his club team. A Nova Tunis native, played for North Coast Prep and later North Coast University for four years before turning pro, the first North Coast graduate to do so. He is the primary ball handler for Nova Tunis, and served in this role for the Green in the Campionato, but he will not be ball-handling in the IBC. As team captain, he has made himself a known presence to many players both on and off the court.

#1-Troy Baker-SG-Dynamo Nova Tangiers-22 y/o-186 cm
Both blessed and cursed by the old guard of Taijani basketball, Troy Baker is unabashedly a new-era Taijani athlete. Signing to Dynamo at eighteen for an undisclosed sum, immediately after leading his South Coco Bay College Oilers to consecutive collegiate basketball championships, Troy has been a presence in Taijani basketball ever since. Though he is hands-down the best shooting guard in Esportiva, he has temper issues and a tendency to ball-hog that make him something of a liability.

#20-Wilbur Couman-PG-Nova Algiers Maroons-24 y/o-185 cm
Like Matsuoka, another standout from the Campionato looking to prove that his success there was not a fluke. Couman made the switch from football to basketball in his senior year at Nova Algiers College, and it's been a precarious ride ever since, but he played well enough for the National Polytechnic Institute to win a contract with the Maroons when he graduated. He is an engineer in his other life, and currently taking a leave of absence from a master's of civil engineering at NPI as well as working on the new Maroons stadium on the waterfront in Nova Algiers.

Coach-Jonas van der Wall-54 y/o-St. Christopher United
Considered the father of Taijani basketball, van der Wall was one of a handful of people who'd heard of the sport when it reached Taijan, and he quickly made it his business to promote it, riding the waves of popularity it experienced into the twenty-first century. Starting at St. Christopher University, he built a strong program from the ground up before leaving it in the hands of his protege Rikard Henriks.

Assistant Coach-Leo Chang-29 y/o-Dynamo Nova Tangiers
Despite the team's success under the van der Wall/Henriks regime in the Campionato, the decision was made by the Taijani National Basketball Board to remove Henriks from the assistant coaching position after several interpersonal conflicts involving him threatened the team in the CEdP. The replacement they named, reportedly without consulting van der Wall, was Leonard Chang, head coach of the Dynamo Nova Tangiers basketball club. Chang is a graduate of the National Institute of Health with a degee in occupational therapy who got into coaching from the athletic training side. Nevertheless, he has had a strong showing in Nova Tangiers, and seems to have the trust of young Troy Baker.

NOTES

The IBC XIII Andromeda Eagles were chosen from the top teams in their Basketball Leagues. The St. Paul Squires won the Men’s Title and the Joppa Lady Steelers won the Women’s Title. Although veteran Coach Jim Duggan is an old-school disciplinarian, he has chosen to be much less rigid with this group. He is retiring from basketball at the end of this tournament.

Despite much criticism from the Andromedan Press, Coach Duggan didn’t choose any players from the previous IBC Championship Squad. Guard Jenny Turner is the only player with IBC experience, earning an IBC Championship Ring in Qazox.

Playing Style

Nova Anglicana is not known for producing extremely tall players, and its young history means that they've had to take what they can get as far as athletes. As such, they've adopted a quick, aggressive, team rather than a particularly big one. Their three-guard lineup often means they are quicker than their opponents, but can be mismatched on the defensive end. Therefore, they play a variety of defenses, "junk" or otherwise. Their main defenses are man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup zone, but have been known to play a trapping 1-3-1, 3-2, or a box-and-one, with Flowers chasing the opposing team all over the court. They also employ a 1-3-1 full-court press, with Hale to play goalkeeper in the back. Their game relies on creating turnovers and turning them into points, so they run fairly often. When forced into a half-court situation, they will dump the ball down to Hale and let him work, or try to draw their defenders out of the lane so that somebody can drive. They like to run the pick-and-pop with Conner, and will run Flowers off of multiple screens to get him open for threes. This is their first official international competition.

The Greenblues are back with the exact same team as the IBC 12 team. Never change a winning team, they say. And it won, alright: a final-eight finish led to a first seed in the Yellow Group. The opponents (in order): Kintratar, The Fair Republic, Makaivellia, Nova Anglicana and Mosktopia. As with all Ko-orenite national teams, the team is incredibly defensive. Prepare yourself for 40 minutes of walking into a wall. Anyhow, Yukon is the big man of the team and has been for a while. Norn and Auva, both still benched, are the rising stars and you can expect them to be no worse than the starting 5. The home games will be played in Safurung Hall, in Kangutsu, Eastern Ko-oren, which can hold up to 12,000 fans.

International Basketball Championship 13: Preview

(Saintland Press) After many months, the International Basketball Championship will finally be making its return. This time around, the tournament will be held in the Dark Star Republic, a newcomer to the international sports world who won the rights to host this edition of the multiverse's leading basketball championship. After winning an Olympic gold medal in the hostile environment that was Liventia, where they were ruthlessly persecuted for preaching the True Faith of Iesus Christus, the Saintland National Basketball Team will be relieved to be competing in much more friendly confines this time around. Certainly, nothing could be worse than being harassed by the produce-throwing women of Cassadaigua, a nation that is in open rebellion against the natural gender roles ordained by God and also a nation that conspired, along with those talking horses from the Equestrian States, to rig a World Cup vote in a scandal that has rocked the international sports world and led to a boycott. This boycott has resulted in a World Cup with just 162 teams entered, a figure that is the lowest in recent memory, even with a terrorist organization impersonating our Kingdom's National Soccer Team. That just shows that the world shares our disgust with the corruption of the World Cup Committee. "While we hear new stories every day about the scandals that have shook the world of international soccer to its very foundation, fortunately soccer is not the only sport that is competed in on an international basis. I am honored that my father has chosen me, once again, to captain the National Basketball Team. As we visit a far-off nation, I believe that God will be with us and He will lead us to victory against the wicked hordes." - Prince Ioannes

For the first time ever in a major international tournament, the Saintland National Team is a top seed. As a result, they have been drawn into the Blue Group, a group that will compete in the city of Tung. First up for the Sanctii, ranked 11th in the world and reigning Olympic Gold Medalists, is Allinlia, the 32nd ranked team in the world. Allinlia is primarily famous for their baseball team, but they have competed at the last 2 IBCs, twice failing to advance out of the group stage. Several months ago, during the last IBC, Allinlia won 6 games and lost 4, but still failed to advance out of their group. This time around, they are actually favored to advance. The second opponent for the Sanctii will be 40th ranked Mapletish, Olympic Silver Medalists. Mapletish won just 3 games at the last IBC, including 2 defeats against the Sanctii. The remaining opponents for the Saintland National Basketball Team are unranked. These opponents will be Catholican Catholica, the Equestrian States and Brittanic. Of the 3 unranked opponents, the Equestrian States are undoubtedly the most notorious. The talking horses have not only paid off the corrupt WCC to steal our World Cup, but also have a history of playing dirty against our National Teams. Who could ever forget the Mud Bowl earlier this year, held at Royal Stadium after the field was accidentally flooded by the Royal Army. On a field that resembled a swamp, the National Gridiron Team had taken a commanding lead as Prince Petrus tossed a touchdown pass. Then, a talking horse delivered a cheap shot to the Heir to the Throne, seriously injuring him. Prince Petrus did not return from his injury until the middle of the last World Bowl, over 4 months later. Now, they will undoubtedly attempt to do the same to Prince Ioannes.

While there is little doubt that the National Basketball Team will advance out of the group stage, what is more important is the condition that they will be in when the Round of 16 rolls around. That is when this edition of the International Basketball Championship will truly begin to get interesting. Whether the National Basketball Team can take the next step and claim our rightful place among the international basketball elite depends upon whether or not we can defeat the likes of Cassadaigua and Qazox, tasks that eluded us last time around. With the additional experience that Prince Ioannes's team has gained, it may very well be time for a new power in the international basketball world. We shall soon find out if that is part of God's Plan or if God wishes to delay the inevitable rise of His Kingdom for a few more months.

Real Basketball Simulator predicts the IBC

(SP) The authentic interactive basketball simulator from Royal Computer Entertainment of Saintland and RepublicSoft, the Real Basketball Simulator, made its debut several months ago at the Saint reveal event. Footage was shown of the Saintland National Team giving those Hiezabels from Cassadaigua a lesson in how basketball is played. Since then, the Saint has been released and has become a massive success around the world. One of the more popular software titles on the Saint is the Real Basketball Simulator, which is endorsed by Prince Ioannes and is widely acknowledged by the Republican press as the most authentic interactive basketball simulation available anywhere. In the interest of predicting the IBC, we have purchased the excellent IBC 13 DLC and run a simulation of the tournament.

We start with the Red group. Valladares ran away with this group on the Real Basketball Simulator, with Super-Llamaland advancing ahead of Darmen and Filopines on a tiebreaker. In the Orange group, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec actually upset Cassadaigua, but the Hiezabels finished at 9-1, good enough to win the group anyway. Quebec advanced ahead of Thatius, due to that victory over Cassadaigua. The Yellow group was slightly more even, as Nova Anglicana shockingly won the group on a tiebreaker. Ko-oren also advanced. Taeshan won just 8 games, but that was enough to narrowly hold off a challenge from New Wolfopolis, who also advanced out of the Green group. In the Blue group, our Kingdom's National Team advanced with an undefeated record. Allinlia would earn advancement to the Round of 16 with a 7-3 record after the Talking Horses lost to Mapletish and finished 6-4. In the Indigo group, Qazox advanced in dominant fashion while Sangti barely edged out Asteran. The Violet group saw Andossa Se Mitrin Vega advance, along with that blasphemous nation run by a man who impersonates God. Finally, The Andromeda Islands dominated the White group. The Sova Empire would join them in the Round of 16, as the lowest seed, edging out Estope and Taijan.

Thus, the 16 qualifiers were established. The Sanctii were the highest seed, so they faced the Sovans in the Round of 16 and eliminated them in 2 straight. Also advancing out of the Round of 16 were Cassadaigua, Qazox, Nova Anglicana, Sangti, The Andromeda Islands, Allinlia and Valladares. This set up a quarterfinal match between the Sanctii and Sangti, which resulted in another Sanctii sweep. Qazox would defeat Nova Anglicana, Cassadaigua would defeat Valladares and The Andromeda Islands would defeat Nova Anglicana. This set up Qazox against The Andromeda Islands and the Sanctii against the wicked ladies in the semis. Both series would go to Game 3, with the Sanctii advancing to face Qazox in the finals. The IBC finals, between the Kingdom of Saintland and Qazox, went the distance, with Prince Ioannes pulling off a phenomenal dunk with just 1.2 seconds to go to force overtime. In overtime, Qazox finally overcame the Saintland National Basketball Team and won the International Basketball Championship.

A disclaimer is necessary, regarding this simulation. This was just a single, non-reproducible, simulation on the Real Basketball Simulator. Your results may very. However, it is a possible scenario for this edition of the IBC. Most likely, the actual IBC results will be slightly different from the simulation. It will be interesting to see just how closely this simulation reflects the actual outcome of the IBC.
