I'm not sure if any of you remembered, but a while back we had a Calvinball tournament. Calvinball was invented by Calvin and Hobbes in the comic, Calvin & Hobbes. I'd really like to bring it back, seeing as it looks fun. If there is a lot of interest, I'll need a host nation, because my scorinator doesn't work. If the host nation wants, they could make the sign-up thread, but I'll do it if needed.

If you aren't aware of what Calvinball is, it's a game where you make all the rules up, but you can't use the same rule twice. Should be interesting to RP.

Here was the info on scorinating and other stuff from the IC Thread:

Each matchday, there will be three sports that will be combined to generate the score of each match. Each sport will count for a certain percentage of the final score. For example, matchday one might be scorinated in the following fashion:

20% Baseball
50% Football
30% Korfball

In addition, one random character will be added to the score of each team in order to replicate the randomness of Calvinball scores in the strip.

Each sport will represent a certain IC aspect of the match. For example, the "baseball" score might represent the number of free throws made while jumping up and down on a pogo stick and singing "The Pogo Stick Song". The "football" score might represent the number of baskets scored while hopping backwards on one leg and making dolphin noises, and so on for each sport that is being incorporated into the final score of the match.

RPs will be graded on creativity, and may be no longer than 450 words. I chose to include this rule to promote the idea of quality over quantity and to prevent people from posting 1,000-word long RPs that are mostly fluff and take forever to get to the point. RPs short be entertaining and consise.

The Unofficial Official Rules of Calvinball

Permanent Rule: You may not play the Calvinball the same way twice.

Primary Rule: The following rules are subject to be changed, amended, or deleted by any player(s) involved. These rules are not required, nor necessary to play Calvinball.

1.0. The following words in these rules are mostly freely interchangeable, the Primary Rule applies:

1.1. All players must wear a Calvinball mask (See Calvinball Equipment - 2.1). No one may question the masks.

1.2 Any player may declare a new rule at any point in the game. The player may do this audibly or silently depending on what zone (Refer to Rule 1.5) the player is in.

1.3. A player may use the Calvinball (See Calvinball Equipment - 2.2) in any way the player see fits, whether it be to incur injury upon other players or to gain benefits for himself.

1.4. Any penalty legislation may be in the form of pain, embarassment, or any degradation the rulee wishes to execute upon the other player.

1.5 The Calvinball Field (See Calvinball Equipment - 2.3) should consist of areas, or zones, which are governed by a set of rules declared by players. Zones may be appear and disappear as often and wherever the player decides. For example, a corollary zone would enable a player to make a corollary (sub-rule) to any rule already made. Or a pernicious poem place would require the intruder to do what the name implies. Or an opposite zone would enable a player to declare reverse playibility on the others. (Remember, the player would declare this zone oppositely by not declaring it.)

1.6 Flags (Calvinball Equipment 2.3) shall be named by players whom shall also assign the power and rules which shall govern that flag.

1.7 Songs are an integral part of Calvinball and verses must be sung spontaneously through the game when randomly assigned events occur.

1.8 Score may be kept or disregarded. In the event that score is kept, it shall have no bearing on the game nor shall it have any logical consistency to it. (Legal scores include 'Q to 12', 'BW-109 to YU-34, and 'Nosebleed to Pelvic Fracture'.)



Calvinball Equipment

2.1. Mask - All participants are required to wear a mask

2.2. Calvinball - A Calvinball may be a soccerball, volleyball, or any other reasonable ball. Bowling balls are accepted.


2.3 Calvinball Field - The Calvinball Field should be any well-sized field, preferably with trees, rocks, grass, creeks, and other natural obstacles.

2.4 Miscellaneous - Other optional equipment include flags, wickets (especially of the time-fracture variety), and anything else the players wish to include.

You shouldn't restart the Watterson Bowl; that's Shadowbourne's tournament, and while there would be no objection to a Calvinball tournament as far as I'm concerned, you can't claim a name that's already been used by another user.

Oh, I thought it was just the official name. I guess either we can make a World Cup of Calvinball, and some other tournaments like a Hobbes Cup and a Calvin Cup.

Unranked Calvinball Championships

And then unofficial tournaments like Hobbes Cups and Calvin Cups, of course, somewhere between the CLI and the UCC.

So, when do people want to get things started? It hasn't been too terribly long since Watterson Bowl I (we should change that name, IMO: World Bowl and Watterson Bowl both have WB acronym. I was going to propose Watterson Bowl of Calvinball, but then it's WBC, and that doesn't work either) but I think the next logical tournament would be Watterson Bowl II, to drum up more interest since there doesn't seem to be a ton right now.

Also, German Shepherds: I think you should change the title of the topic to "Calvinball Discussion Thread," since that's basically what it's become.

This way, IBC will be over, World Cup will be winding down (I think, I'm not in it so I have no idea but I've seen it around the forums for a while) and most High School/College finals will be over so people will have more time to RP.

I don't think we can have 6-13 days between signups and this tournament starting, so even if we opened signups today, the holiday season will have passed by the time Watterson Bowl II would start.
