Congratulations to everyone who made it to the playoff rounds in the Holy Catholic Republic of Vaugania! below is some very important information regarding the country that you'll want to read up on before you get here.

Transportation

To arrive in Vaugania you will likely just want to fly in to the city that you will be playing in. The cities hosting games are Vaugania, Lindsborough, Montreuil, and Agri. All 4 cities have a major airport so flying in won't be an issue. If you insist on arriving by boat, your best bets will be to sail into Buesk if you are playing in Agri or Yzerberg. If you are playing in Montreuil or Lindsborough, you will want to dock in Port Byron.

While you are in country, there are a variety of travel methods you can use. Vaugania has a strong auto industry and cars are prevalent throughout the country. That is always an option, but if you decide that you would like to use something less polluting, you may feel free to use the rail lines. The railways in Vaugania aren't as developed as they are in other countries, but it will do want you need it for during the tournament. Then there is always the option of flying between the airports in the various cities around the country.

Lodging

The tournament is being held in major cities around Vaugania so there will be plenty of nice hotels to stay in. Most of these hotels will be non-smoking (there is somewhat of a stigma on it in the country). The most upscale hotels will likely be found in Yzerberg and Montreuil. next up would be Lindsborough followed by Agri. Though all of these cities have some very nice accommodations.

Weather

Vaugania experiences rather varied weather. In the areas of Vaugania where the tournament is taking place, all four seasons are present. A little snow can be expected during the tournament so be sure to bundle up. In the summer, temperatures could reach the upper 90's, but 100 degree are by no means unheard of and a few are expected every year. In the winter, the teamperature generally gets no higher than 40 degrees and it is rare for it to even get that high. The lows are expected to be around 0. While games are going on, the temperatures will likely be in the teens or 20s.

Money

The national currency of Vaugania is the Lidstrom denoted with an "L" and is rather expensive. The current exchange rate is $1.73 for 1 Lidstrom. Unless you find yourself out in the boondocks for some odd reason, Universal Standard Dollars will suffice, but draw some ire from the people you are paying. Vaugania has an absolutely massive economy which means that nearly everyone has a good deal of money. This means that things in Vaugania cost a little more than they would other places because the average Vauganian can still afford those prices.

Language

English is spoken by over 98% of the population and is the language used in business as well as in dealings with other countries. A handy chart has been put together to see what languages you will encounter based upon what city you are in.

Agri: English, Norwegian, Irish (citizens can speak it, but don't regularly use it)
Montreuil: English, French
Areas north of Montreuil (Sorochuk, Mt. Dostoyevsky): English, Norwegian, Russian, other Eastern European languages (Latvian, Lithuanian, etc.)
Lindsborough: English, German
Areas around Lindsborough: English, German, Russian, other Eastern European languages
Yzerberg: All of the above

Entertainment

Mediums of entertainment are largely varied based upon where you go. It's time for another handy chart.

Yzerberg: Night clubs, symphony, arcades, various historical attractions and museums
Montreuil: Gambling, horseback riding, wine tasting, fancy sophisticated stuff
north of Montreuil: Snow sports
Lindsborough: Bars, city tours, lakefront (Lake Lindsay) attractions
around Lindsborough: See above
Agri: More sports, museums, amusement park

Food

Vauganian fare is heavy in protein. This stems from the manufacturing, mining, and farming roots of many Vauganians. Beef and pork are regular features in homes and on menus. Breakfast usually consists of eggs, a bread, and some form of breakfast meat, usually a sausage. Cereal is also eaten widely, but it is not considered a traditional breakfast.

The mid-day meal is not as important as the other two and this is where the average Vauganian gets most of their fruits as well as a good portion of their vegetables. Salads are a popular meal as well as sub sandwiches. This meal still includes protein as a major component, though this is more likely to come in the way of beans or nuts.

The evening meal is considered the most important of the day. A large serving of beef or pork can be expected and usually a potato will accompany it as well as a green vegetable such as asparagus or green beans. Corn is also a dinnertime staple. The evening meal is expected to take at least an hour. The reason for this is because it is supposed to be used to reflect upon the day with family and/or friends. It is considered bad practice to eat dinner alone. It is not uncommon for one to go to a friend's house for dinner or for one to invite their co-workers and friends over for a meal.

Religion

Catholicism is the national religion of Vaugania, though it is not required to be a practitioner. Around 98% of the population is Catholic with the other 2% being Lutheran. The government keeps some separation between church and state being that the Catholic Church can't actually make laws or enforce, though they hold a massive amount of swing in Congress and receive a lot of money from the government. If you are not Catholic, but still Christian, you will likely have to settle for a Lutheran church. If you are not Christian, but still religious, you are out of luck. It is also advisable not to argue religion or politics because Vauganians will argue as long as they can. Political apathy is not known in Vaugania.

Laws

Vaugania is very far right politically. While the economy is absolutely immense, some things that are legal in other countries are very illegal here. Recreational drugs including marijuana are very controlled and you could be facing hefty fines as well as prison time. Even more so for hard drugs like heroin. Prostitution and pornography are illegal in Vaugania as well. There is also a ban on items of Sanctii origin including Saints. This policy has come under fire by some members of the Catholic Conservative party who have broken off to form the New Catholic Party.

Tobacco and alcohol are both legal in Vaugania, and the legal age of purchase and consumption is 18 for both substances. Though tobacco is legal, its use is frowned upon in most parts of the country. As far as alcohol is concerned, the maximum BAC to drive is .06. To combat this, many Vauganian breweries produce more flavorful beers with lower alcohol contents so people can still drink just as much as they would in a country where the BAC was higher.

Venues

(OOC: I would have pictures, but Photobucket was being stupid.)

Yzerberg: The venue for games in Yzerberg will be Landvik Memorial Ballpark. It is the largest ballpark in the country with a capacity of 52,250 and it is home to the National Team. The stadium is named after the first commissioner of baseball in Vaugania.

Dimensions: LF 340 ft; LCF 375 ft; CF 425 ft; RCF 365 ft; RF 320 ft

Lindsborough: Games in Lindsborough will be played at the Lindsborough Coliseum which can hold 48,633 people. It is located in the city center with a backdrop of factories and old brick apartment buildings. It is known for cheaper admissions compared to other ballparks. Lindsborough sports fans are considered to be the most ravenous of the lot.

Dimensions: LF 330 ft; LCF 374 ft; CF 407 ft; RCF 374 ft; RF 334 ft

Montreuil: Montreuil Baseball Centre will be hosting the games in Montreuil. It is one of the newest ballparks in the country and is the only one of the 4 hosting venues that has AstroTurf. The ballpark can host 49,300 fans.

Dimensions: LF 328 ft; LCF 375 ft; CF 400 ft; RCF 375 ft; RF 328 ft

Agri: Prime Seed Ballpark is the host of baseball games in Agri. It is the smallest of the 4 ballparks with a seating capacity of 41,270. Agri is traditionally a sports city, though they are a little more calm than the fans you would find in Lindsborough.

Dimensions: LF 339 ft; LCF 377 ft; CF 407 ft; RCF 365 ft; RF 328 ft

Postby Super-Llamaland » Mon Nov 11, 2013 4:27 pm

Here's the roster, four years after we walked off the field in defeat in WBC 27.

Rosters: Image

Thank you, Vulpine Sportif of Northern Sunrise Islands.

Stadium: Tyler Rocke Stadium in downtown New Llama, capital of Super-Llamaland. Tyler Rocke Stadium is the official stadium for Super-Llamaland's home games in WBC28 as Super-Llamaland National Athletics Complex is built.

Oh, and right, RP Permissions and StyleMod:

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: No
RP injuries to my players: Yes
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, match my ejected players with yours
Godmod other events: Yes, TG me before hand
Use DH at home: No
Style Mod: +3
Starting Lineup (Danks, Mills, Moreno, and Roberts are lefty; Bradley is a switch hitter)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 33, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 28, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. RF Jake Earnest, Age 20, #30 (LF or CF): A do-it-all outfielder with all five tools. A real phenom, maybe better than Trevor Matthews, his bench counter-part. Replacing fan favorite Chris Harder, so he's not the most popular player.

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 34, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. Bryant Moreno, Age 32, #3: A pretty-good-at-everything catcher with a large personality and a .450 average in the last Classic. (Throws righty, bats lefty)

6. 3B Alex Cameron- Age 33, #7 (None) A former bench-warmer, Cameron underwent a Jose Bautista- like transformation. He became a fantastic 30-30 type hitter with good contact, although his defense needed work. Then, his knee gave out, and is expected to be off the team by WBC 29.

7. CF Brett Rochester- Age 27, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop.

8. LF Jake Addams- Age 29, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester.

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 26, #24(C/1B) Young and raw but with fantastic power.

BENCH

Roger Harkless, OF, #19, 17: Part of Super-Llamaland's youth movement. A wiry outfielder with good contact and speed. Power could develop, but maybe next tournament.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 32: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average. Will get more time with Cameron's health problems.

Trevor Matthews, OF, #18, 22: A young outfielder with world class talent and a switch hitting bat. Matthews' swing is the purest in the Llamaland Minor League at any level, but his baseball IQ could use work.

Manager- Joe McKenzie, 58
Hitting Coach- Steve Mays, 61
1B Coach- Nick Horry, 48
3B Coach- Stan Evans, 70
PITCHING COACH- Thomas Yaft, 46
BULLPEN COACH- Chris Evans, 45
BULLPEN CATCHERS- Don George, 40, and Jack Aaron, 49.

The Llamas are coming off of a round of sixteen appearance four years ago when Kriegersen swept them. Now, they're back with the full staff returning and the fourteenth spot in the world.

PITCHING

Starters

R Evan Masorka- 31, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 34, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties. But he can't seem to stay healthy for more than two starts.

L Leo Davis- #51, 30- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Chris Lee, #4, 36- An aging knuckler, fantastic when healthy, and makes starts like his WBC 26 start against Zwangzug when unhealthy: 2/3 IP, 9 ER.

R Rick Jackson, #50, 35- Once a Long Reliever who got spot starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs, but he has, and he's a starter on the national team, so should you care?

RELIEF
R Drew Gilson Jr., long relief- 16, #49- Yes, Drew49 is here. The sixteen-year-old phenom sports mid-nineties heat with movement and can hit 98 on a flat fastball. His sliders top out at 85, and his out pitch cutter is about as fast.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 28, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Middle Relievers
Raymond- #53, 27: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter.
Carson- 27, #59: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Tomas Reynolds/L Evan Daye/R Robby Irving- setup men
Reynolds- #52, 21: A star from the U-18 team has arrived with his blazing 96-mph fastballs and a penchant for shoulder injuries.

Daye- #55, 31: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.

Irving: 32/#82- Robby Irving used to be a starter with a low-90s fastball, mid-80s sinker, low-80s slider, and low-70s curveball. Then he got injured and moved to the bullpen.

Nick Bowden- Closer: High 90s-fastball, low 90s- splitter. #43, age 30

Choose my Lineup No - follow what was posted.
Choose my Runscorers Yes
RP Injuries Yes, one per game.
Godmod Injuries Yes, but note the above restriction.
Follow my Rotation: Yes
Eject my players: Yes, one per game unless you eject a commensurate number of yours. For instance, you can eject three of my players if you eject two of yours. This includes coaches, who can be ejected but count towards the limit. An exception is that you can eject both my manager and my pitcher for throwing at a batter after a warning (as the rules say should happen) and this counts as one ejection.
Godmod other events: I'm assuming that's what this is supposed to say): Yes, do anything except kill Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state and official deity. Failed and fake assassinations are fine.
Use DH at home: Yes. But we're using official MLB rules, meaning if you have a starting pitcher who is a good hitter, you may bat him instead of a DH, but then you lose your right to a DH for the remainder of the game even if you go to the bullpen.

Stadium:

Gregoryisgodistan will play four home games at Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium in the Capital District, Ward 6. The Capacity is 2,500. The dimensions are

If a batted ball lodges underneath the benches in the bullpens in foul territory in left or right field, the ball is dead, it is a double and all runners advance two bases from the base they are on when the pitch was thrown.
If a batted ball hits the bullpen bench on the fly, it is dead and is a foul ball.
If a ball lands in fair territory, then hits the bullpen bench and bounces back, it is a live ball.
If a ball is in fair territory, and a bird takes it in its beak and flies off, then if the ball was over the outfield it is a double and all runners advance two bases. If it is past an imaginary line from third base to first base through the pitchers mound, it is a single and all runners advance one base. Otherwise, if it is in fair territory, the batter is out. In all cases, the ball is immediately dead. If it is in foul territory when the bird grabs it, it is a foul ball.
If Lord Almighty Gregory causes the ball to be struck by lightning while it is in fair territory, therefore destroying the ball, it is a home run. If it is in foul territory, the batter is out. (This is exactly how the rule reads - but it would apply to any lightning strike, it's just that Gregoryisgodistan would attribute the strike to Lord Almighty Gregory.)
If the pervert who lives in the bushes beyond the outfield exposes himself to an outfielder, which in the umpire's opinion distracts him from making the catch, this constitutes fan interference, and the batter is out. Runners must return to their bases to tag up, but may advance at their own peril once the outfielder fields the ball.
If an alien spaceship lands on the field while the ball is in play, play shall not be stopped until the aliens emerge from the ship, at which point all runners shall return to the last base they have previously touched, except that the batter is entitled to first base if he has not been put out. If this would lead to two runners on the same base, the lead runner shall instead advance to the next base without liability to be put out, and if necessary this rule shall be applied again at that base.
If the ball hits an airplane, helicopter, alien spaceship, or flying car that is flying overhead, and it is over fair territory at the time, it shall be a double and all runners advance two bases from the base they are on when the play started.

One game will be played at Lord Almighty Gregory National Stadium in the Capital District, Ward 15. The capacity for baseball is 228,617, though it is also used for soccer primarily.

The dimensions are

LF Line: 345
LCF: 369
CF: 423
RCF: 350
RF: 300

Ground rules:

All the same as at Baseball Stadium, except for the ones about the bullpen because the bullpens are outside the playing field here. Also, there are more ground rules.
If the ball hits the crossbar of the soccer net that is exposed directly above the center field fence (since this is a soccer stadium usually), it is a home run even if the ball bounces back into play.
If the ball hits the left post of the goal (facing the fence from the field) it is a home run as that part is beyond the fence. However, if it hits the right post, which is directly above the fence, and bounces back into play, the ball is still in play.
If a ball bounces in the field of play and hits the right post, it is also in play. However, if it hits the left post or crossbar, it is a true ground-rule double (NOT an "automatic double" in this case, since it relates to the ground rules.)
Note that although the rule about the perv is on the books, it should not be applied because he doesn't live there. Unfortunately, our sports ministry is too lazy to do anything but copy/paste.

Notes

The same Saintland National Baseball Team that competed in the 26th and 27th World Baseball Classics will return this time, hoping to return to the playoffs. Marcus Tragus is an exceptional defensive 2B. This year, he has finally developed into a decent hitter. Matthaeus and Ioannes Bebius are brothers, as are Petrus and Marcus Tragus. Sittius is a defensive liability. He used to be a great defensive player and a very fast player, but he's gained weight. He is still an exceptional contact hitter, but he is a very slow baserunner these days and often fails to beat out throws he used to beat consistently. Ennius is a good defensive catcher who is just decent offensively. Vagnius is a great hitter and above-average defensively. Matthaeus Bebius was in the midst of a breakout season when he suffered a season-ending injury on June 26th, 2012. He returned at WBC 25 and is having a career year in Saintland's domestic league this year. Bebius and Iulus are 5-tool players. Iulus is finally putting it all together this season. Petrus Tragus is a very fast player who stole 128 bases in 2012. Sentius is a good hitter, but he is primarily known for his leadership and his highlight-reel defense. Maccius is known as the top power hitter in Saintland, but he doesn't make much contact. Maianius is above-average at hitting for contact, power and defensively. He is known as "Iron" Lucas Maianius because he hadn't missed a game in over 10 seasons of Saintland's domestic league, a streak that was broken during the 26th WBC. Cnisius is normally a second baseman and Neratius is normally a third baseman. Cnisius is a decent all-around player offensively, but he is below-average defensively. Neratius is an average hitter with exceptional speed and good defense. Juventius is a poor man's Petrus Tragus, albeit without Tragus's patience at the plate. Rufus returned from an injury in midseason of last year. Most Sanctii players have good plate patience. Sittius and Juventius are the exceptions to that rule, as they tend to swing at pitches early in the count. The Saintland will again use a 3-man rotation this time around. Although the 4-man rotation is the norm in Saintland, Petrus Tragus went with a 3-man in WBCs 26 and 27 to maximize starts for Ioannes Bebius. Due to Bebius's poor performances in previous WBCs, he has been demoted to 3rd starter and Tragus has decided to go with a 4-man rotation in WBC 28. In Saintland, the closer gets many 6-out save opportunities. In 2012, Bebius won 40 games, struck out 413 batters in 375 innings and had an ERA below 2, winning the King Paulus XIV Award, named for the great-great-great-grandfather of King Paulus XV and greatest pitcher in the history of Saintland baseball. Famulus is just as powerful a pitcher, but has control problems. Fundanus averages just below a strikeout an inning. Unlike the other starters, Laelius is more of a finesse pitcher who rarely concedes a flyball. Nonius and Oppis have similar power to the top 3 starters. Rufus and Ulpius are finesse pitchers. Arius is a knuckleball pitcher. Saintland will use its bench aggressively because most of the bench players are of comparable ability to the starters and have different skill sets. Sanctii baseball players are taught not to argue with umpires and doing so is unthinkable. Surprisingly, King Paulus XV installed SaintTurf at Royal Park, but Royal Stadium uses a grass surface. As those familiar with Saintland's World Bowl team know, the surface at Royal Stadium was re-seeded following World Bowl 20 due to Royal Army drills that "inadvertently" turned much of Royal Stadium into a swamp, but the King still has no plans to install turf at that stadium or to install grass at the baseball stadium. The fences at Royal Park were moved in prior to WBC26 to increase capacity and for strategic reasons.

Despite previous announcements to the contrary, King Paulus XV has decided to give this team another chance to redeem themselves after an atrocious performance during the last WBC. The King's Government sent in the form to signup and immediately stopped paying attention to all reports regarding the WBC. They just couldn't justify expending limited resources that were needed for more vital tasks such as World Cup planning and/or crackdowns on certain "domestic terrorist" organizations. In the likely event that this team performs poorly, most of the roster will be replaced for WBC 29.

3 weeks before the WBC-

"Come on you slackers! 3 more up and backs!" yelled Ike Mesa, the manager of Qazox' baseball team. "My grandmother did 50 of these a day when she was 100! You lazy bums are struggling to do 25!"

'I wish he'd shut the fuck up' mumbled multiple players, but all kept running in the 85° heat just outside of Pika City; the national team's new training home. It was only the 2nd day of training, and finally the Qazoxian Baseball Association had come through with the request that every manager since WBC 12 had asked for: a baseball only training camp. Instead of having to use leftover training grounds worn down by the national football and gridiron teams, a new $107 million Zaq ($53.5 million) facility had finally been completed. 2 full-sized fields, a state-of-the-art weight room with spa and massage rooms; a rehab and medical house and a new 21,450 seat stadium, Franko Auto Field.

With all that money put into the baseball team, the expectations now have been raised for this team. Can they live up to them?

New Wolfopolis Wolfpack - National Baseball Team
Acronym: NW
Style Modifier: -1
Captain: Katsunori Matsuoka

After a better-than-expected opening WBC in which the Wolfpack went 5-3 in group play and lost in the first round of the playoffs, they're back for more. They've canned "ace" Allen Marsh after a less-than-stellar WBC and have him as a luxury in the bullpen. Acting as ace in the bullpen this year will be Leo Jacobson, the lefty with a killer curveball who went 2-0 during group play in WBC 27. A weak spot during WBC 27 for the Wolfpack was their bullpen. As a result, every single pitcher who was in the bullpen last year no longer remains there, except Cecil Blanchard, a young long reliever who didn't pitch much in WBC 27, but has looked good since. The rest were relieved of their duties. Ron Larochelle, the closer taking the place of Gabriel Hansen, shows promise. He is one of the harder throwers in all of the Association of New Wolfopolis Baseball (ANWB). As for the hitters, all remains the same. Andre Harding was a standout last classic, mashing all sorts of extra-base hits and making even the most stable pitchers worry. Katsunori Matsuoka, team captain, also performed well in WBC 27, being able to bunt and steal and hit for average, as well as maintain a 1.000 fielding percentage. Every hitter in the Wolfpack lineup is good, though, and all performed at least average, if not better than average, last classic. The Wolfpack also went to International Baseball Slam III, as well as co-hosted the event, and claimed third place over tough teams like Super-Llamaland and The Sova Empire. The 36th-ranked Wolfpack will be a tough contender, and I'm excited to see how they'll perform this time around.Written by Rebecca Lillard, Baseball Correspondent, NWSN

Starting Lineup

1. Yoshifumi Shameimaru (SS, R/R): An agile shortstop with good contact and power, but not enough to homer consistently. Arguably Imota's best glove.

2. Tomoe Lilienthal (2B, R/R): An agile and skilled but still green infielder who is excels at fielding and getting on base but lacks hitting power. Her main draw is her potential.

3. Yasuhiro Chadani (1B, L/L): The stereotypical slow but powerful first baseman. Clobbers balls and has good judgment, but lacks speed on the basepaths.

4. Akio Homura (CF, R/R): A solid combination of speed, slugging, and fielding make him a force to be reckoned with at the plate or in the field. A rather aloof and quiet man who says little and reveals even less.

5. Naoto Takamachi (LF, R/R): While not quite Homura's equal in offensive production (WBC 27 notwithstanding), Takamachi is much more sociable than his rival. Has a keen eye for sending the ball where the defense least expects it.

6. Kiyohiko Sakurai (DH, L/L): Another slow but powerful first baseman, reprising his WBC 27 role as DH. The fact that he holds the Imotan pro league record for most damage and injuries caused by batted balls has earned him the nickname "Kowashiya" ("Breaker").

7/6. Akitoshi Touno (3B, S/R): A tough as nails third baseman whose offensive production has declined somewhat since WBC 27. Nonetheless, he still has lightning reflexes and a keen eye for making contact.

8/7. Riki Naoe (C, R/R): Despite his excellent defensive technique, strong throwing arm, and good contact, his bat is rather weak. He compensates somewhat by being a damn good bunter.

9/8. Satoshi Houjou (RF, S/L): Despite having a lackluster bat, his fielding technique and throwing arm make runners think twice before trying for third (or home).

Bench

Haruki Kamio (IF R/R): Despite good defense and contact, this former starter just isn't a slugger. He does, however, make a decent pinch hitter.

Nagi Touno (IF R/R): In many respects similar to Kamio, his glove is definitely his strongest asset. An excellent defensive substitute.

Hayato Yagami (IF S/R): A well-balanced stat set plus experience in all four infield positions and a surpringly powerful bat make him a jack-of-all-trades, useful either at the plate or in the field.

Rinnosuke Aoba (OF R/R): Despite his power and agility, he's not very good at making contact. Generally used as a defensive substitute.

Saki Lilienthal (OF L/L): Tomoe Lilienthal's older sister is a young and arrogant but capable outfielder whose batting is powerful but still unreliable. Can also play first base if needed.

Chie Yakumo (C R/R): An young and energetic catcher who has a lot of potential but not a lot of practical experience. She stuns would-be base stealers with her surprisingly powerful arm, but her batting leaves a lot to be desired.

Starting Rotation

Eiji Miki (R/R): Primarily relies on a four-seam fastball in the triple digits and a wicked slider. His curveball and change-up are adequate, but not his primary weapons.

Makoto Kikuchi (R/R): This fireballer depends heavily on fastballs, although he's developed an adequate slider and decent changeup since WBC 27. His control is still a bit shaky, however.

Shinobu Tsukimura (L/L): After WBC 27, this former generalist focused on his off-speed technique, and was rewarded with a potent curveball and Vulcan changeup.

Rinnosuke Natsume (R/R): Primarily relies on his two-seam fastball and curveball, but is somewhat predictable in that regard. Also still has control issues.

Nozomi Itoshiki (L/L): A rookie with a surprisingly powerful four-seam fastball and slider combination. Her effectiveness is somewhat diminished by stability issues.

Bullpen

Renji Hong (LR, L/L): A former starter infamous for his eephus and slider. Has issues with stability and dealing with baserunners.

Tomohiro Mamiya (LR, R/R): An aging former starter who relies on his slider and curveball in light of his diminishing arm strength.

Issei Tsumuhana (LR, R/R): A long reliever with a varied repetoire of off-speed pitches, he relies mainly on his sinker.

Arahiko Inui (MR, R/R): A not-very-bright fastballer who needs to frequently be reminded to change up his pitches. His control is above average.

Reijirou Hakurei (MR, R/R): A curveball specialist who has some control issues but is difficult to hit when things go well. When they go wrong...

Shirou Emiya (LOOGY, L/L): A control pitcher who relies heavily on his curveball. Rarely breaks 80 MPH.

Mikoto Aoi (Setup, R/R): A wide variety of off-speed pitches keep his opponents off-guard. Doesn't have a lot of power, but arguably the best control pitcher on the team.

Makoto Kaname (Closer, L/L): Despite lacking the endurance to go more than a few innings, his repetoire of pitches is nearly unmatched. His favorite by far is his split-fingered fastball.

The Serbian Empire roster has 33 players, eight of which are injury reserves. The reserves will be given numbers in the 80s such as #80, #81, etc. I hope they don't have to play, but the nature of the tournament in length will certainly require one or two if the team goes far enough into the championships. The Serbian Empire is an oddity of a team that has always advanced to the playoff rounds, but have never advanced beyond the 2nd round. So consider the Serbs as a locked in team, but sure to fail once they make the playoffs. The track record is too long for this pattern not to continue.

HICANA NATIONAL ROSTER

Style Mod: -4

A brief name-history: Hicana was predominantly Native Hicanan, a Spanish-type race, before colonized by the English-speaking nation of Super-Llamaland. Super-Llamaland captured Hicana and now has them as a territory. As a result, many Spanish-sounding names have been changed a bit (no accents) and some are just confusing, such as naming the DH "Lunch".

1. 3B Ricardo Nunyez, 25 (Bats S, Throws R): Speedster with good defense but a poor arm. Could hit .300 in the MLB.
2. C Sammy Manyana, 31 (R/R): Unusually speedy for a catcher, 15-HR-a-year power, okay contact, great at handling the pitching staff.
3. RF Wesley Jimenez, 29 (L/R): Do-it-all outfielder, rising star of Hicana.
4. 1B Ashton Mitchell-Ford, 28 (L/L): A slugger who draws walks. Okay defense and contact, watching him run is comical.
5. LF Brad Berry, 30 (R/R): Decent contact and power, sterling defense.
6. CF Jose Velasquez, 36 (R/R): Aging center-fielder who swings at everything. 20/20-type player.
7. 2B Peter Dirk, 29 (S/R): Not too much talent in this slap-hitter, but contact, speed, hustle, and defense make him a valuable tool.
8. DH Randall Almuerzo, 35 (L/R): "Lunch Man" is an aging slugger whose contact skills are rapidly disappearing.
9. SS Emmanuel Cruz-Johnson, 32 (S/R): A veteran of Super-Llamaland's domestic league. In mainly for his D.

Note: Brendan Smith will play in odd-numbered games at shortstop and bat ninth.

C Lucas Alponyas, 21 (R/R): Sammy Manyana's protege. Defense is inconsistent, but power and average are there.
UTIL Brendan Smith, 30 (S/L): An uncoveted shortstop in Super-Llamaland, Smith tried playing in Hicana and found himself a star. Contact-and-defense type player.
3B Tom Aguera, 36 (L/R): Aging ex-star, big ego, can still hit long balls but strikes out too much to be playing regularly.
OF Lukas Nanyolo, 26 (S/L): "Yolo" is a clubhouse presence who plays ridiculously hard on both ends of the field.

1. Bryant Morretini, 36 (R): Morretini's speed is rapidly falling, but he still has his top-flight command of four pitches: high-80s fastball, mid-80s slider, mid-70s changeup and curveball.

2. Tomas Perez, 33 (R): Okay command, will do anything to protect his hitters, can still bring it despite age. Mid-90s fastball, low-80s cutter and changeup.

3. Lucas Sanchez, 25 (L): Left-handed fireballer, known to hit triple digits, spotty command of slider, but slider has potential. Changeup is iffy at best.

4. Juan Gomez, 29 (R): Prototypical pitcher with low-90s fastball, mid-80s slider, low-80s change and curve.

Long Relievers:
Todd Smith, 25 (R): Horrifyingly bad command with some slow speeds, but his pitches break comically. Ask Bo Allen, the player who swung at a Todd Smith curveball. Unbeknownst to Allen, the pitch had broken away three feet and bounced in front of where home plate should've been. Poor Bo Allen retired soon after.
Alex Whitelock, 32 (L): The guy to watch if a starter gets injured. Scouting report reads like Juan Gomez, only he can't command his slider as much.

Middle Relief:
Julio Delgado, 33 (L): Blazing fastball that he can't control. Nothing else besides the occasional change up.
Randy Jimenez, 26 (L): Julio Delgado with control and a secondary pitch (slider). His fatal flaw is right-handed power hitters.

Setup: Stewart Chang, 31 (R): Only Chinese player on the team. Great command, mid-90s fastball with a good sinker.

Closer: Raymond Foster, 39 (R): Retired from Super-Llamaland and broke the single-season saves record (46) in Hicana. mid-80s two-seam fastball with great command and movement. He claims to throw a cutter, sinker, changeup, curve, and slider, but he probably can't.

It has been many years since the Lycrabon baseball team has had turnover like this. Following WBC 27, many players chose to ride off into the sunset - many leaving with championship rings from the Blue Jays' lone title run. With the announcement of Lycrabon's entry into the 28th Classic, the newest member of the Hall of Fame was announced: Clifford Nash, the premier relief pitcher from the championship team. And now, the remainder of this year's squad:

"Welcome back to Sports News Network on Radio Station 770 with Bob, which is me, and Tim!"
"Huh, that's weird."
"What?"
"Nothing. Just checking out the group draw. Not a bad group."
"Can we win?"
"Maybe. There is fourth-seeded Strawbee in the group. And The Serbian Empire, ranked twenty-fifth. Then we got some Cowardly Pacifists, ranked forty-fourth, Alitaba, ranked fifty-eighth, and Allied Omaha, unranked."
"Well, we don't have to win. We can finish second and make the playoffs."
"Yeah, but Strawbee's tough. And the Serbian Empire's no slouch, either."
"Are you worrying about anybody under Serbian Empire?"
"No. I should be."
"That will come back and bite you."
"Not Cowardly Pacifists. They can't bite me."

Baseball Development Center, Mitakihara

The Baseball Development Center, located on the outskirts of Mitakihara City, is a massive complex dedicated to training baseball players for the professional league. Every year, thousands of young hopefuls travel here for the chance to make their dreams of playing in the Imota Professional Baseball League a reality. Few were accepted, and even fewer made it to the pros. It used to be that proving oneself at the Center was the only path to joining a professional team.

In the past four years, however, things had changed. When Ken Urofuchi and the Sunwings returned from WBC 27, they brought back with them lessons learned in competition with foreign teams. Urofuchi immediately resigned from his managership of the powerhouse Mitakihara Archers and maneuvered his way to becoming Commissioner of the IPBL. Once there, he began instituting changes to the way Imota played baseball. Limitations on extra innings were removed. A dedicated minor league was established to give prospects more practical experience and give more people the chance to prove themselves than the Center ever could. The Center itself was expanded and given new funding, as were existing youth and school leagues. Special attention was given to ethnic minorities and female players, many of whom had been formally or informally excluded in the past.

The results had been astounding. Fears from traditionalists about the "dumbing down" of Imotan baseball had proven unfounded, and soon, a sort of symbiotic relationship between the minor league, youth leagues, and the Center developed: the Center took talented youngsters from the youth leagues and gave them intensive training in baseball theory, who would take that training and apply it in the minor league, benefitting both themselves and their teammates. This in turned inpired many youth leaguers to push themselves for a spot at the Center or one of the minor league teams, and the cycle would continue.

Nozomi Itoshiki had been one of the beneficiaries of the new system. In her last year of college at the time of WBC 27, she loved baseball but hadn't been taken seriously by her college team because of her sex, or by the Center because of her lack of college team experience. Even so, she trained in her off hours and finally signed with the Archers minor league team. After proving herself on the mound in the minors, she had been called up to the parent club in the top league, and after just a season there, she found herself on the list of players accepted to play for the national team.

The reason she was at the Center today was a simple one: Urofuchi, who had returned to manage the national team again, had established his base of operations here, at the Center, and had called everyone on the team to spend the last few days before their first game practicing together, perhaps even giving the rookies a few pointers.

She was among the last players to enter the conference room where Urofuchi had told them to gather. Most of them had broken off into small groups based on team or other affiliation. Fellow Archers Eiji Miki and Kiyohiko Sakurai were talking animatedly in one group, while Crows catcher Riki Naoe and pitcher Rinnosuke Natsume discussed tactics in another. The only other female players on the team, Angels shortstop Tomoe Lilienthal, her sister, Rabbits right fielder Saki Lilienthal, and Tengu catcher Chie Yakumo were off in another group of their own. Tomoe had been laughing at something while Saki glared at her, but then she noticed Nozomi and waved her over.

Nozomi nodded and joined them. Tomoe and Saki were opposites in many ways; Saki was serious while Tomoe was rather carefree, and Tomoe was much easier to get along with than her sister was. Their opposition even extended to their play styles, Tomoe being a fast right-hander with a good on-base percentage but relatively low slugging average, and Saki being a more conventional left-handed slugger who led rookies in home runs and extra base hits her first season.

"Did you hear the news?" Tomoe asked immediately. Nozomi shook her head.

"They decided on the groups!" Chie blurted out. "We're with Sangti, Karditan, Nova Anglicana, Mochria, and Chiata!"

"Aw, I wanted to tell her!" Tomoe whined. Saki face palmed.

"Please excuse my sister," she said, clearly used to this. Nozomi nodded.

"It... it's all right," she said, wondering just what she had gotten herself into. Of the three other women on the team, Saki was the one she knew best, having traded several home runs and strike outs with her. She knew that Tomoe could be much more childish than her sister, and that at only 19 Chie could be even worse, but this was the first time she had actually met them.

"Your attention please!" The side conversations died down as a voice at the front called for attention. The players faced it and saw none other than IPBL Commissioner and national team manager Ken Urofuchi holding a microphone. Beside him stood the rest of the coaching staff, including the Rabbits' Franz Lilienthal, Tomoe and Saki's father.

"Thank you," Urofuchi said. "Now then, let's get down to business. The World Baseball Classic begins in three days. Today, we got our group assignment and schedule. We're in Group 8, and it isn't going to be an easy one. Sangti. Karditan. Nova Anglicana. All names you should know. Sangti finished fourth last time. Nova Anglicana made it to the quarterfinals in their first time, where they lost to Maklohi Vai. And in group play, Karditan tied in head to head against both of them.

"As well as two unranked teams," he added. "Mochria and Chiata. Chiata's a completely new face, but Mochria's a puppet of New Wolfopolis, so they're not gonna be easy." He paused for emphasis.

"Hell, none of these games are gonna be easy. We've got ten games this time, and these are teams with a lot of baseball history behind them. The schedule's tighter too, with only one bye day at the halfway mark. Our first game is against Sangti on Friday, at the Sun Dome. Miki's gonna start." A tall pitcher nodded in acknowledgement as his name was said.

"We've drawn up rooming assignments for you all," he continued. "We'll be training together and playing together for the next two weeks, so we tried to cross team lines with the rooms. I believe in every single one of you. If I didn't, you wouldn't be here. Franz here," at this he indicated Coach Lilienthal, "has the rooming list, so see him after afternoon practice. I'll see you out on the field. Dismissed."

The players quietly began to leave the room and get dressed for practice.

OOC: If only I could be this productive for NaNoWriMo... :palm:

Also, can we treat the Thanksgiving Break as six in-universe rest days?

EDIT: On another note, I can't believe The Sova Empire and The Sovan Antithesis got placed in the same group.

World Baseball Classic 28: Preview

(SP) The Saintland National Baseball Team returns, unchanged, for another World Baseball Classic. This is a rather surprising development after their failure to advance out of the group stage last time and even moreso after their atrocious performance at the rather disorganized Esportivan Autumn Festival. Despite previous announcements, the King's Government chose not to expend precious resources putting together several teams to compete for spots on the WBC roster. Reluctantly, they sent the same team to fail again, just to maintain our Kingdom's spot on the WBC Council. With the potential of a World Cup coming to Saintland and with the National Ice Hockey Team heading to Sicoutimont for the playoffs, the World Baseball Classic appears to be an afterthought this time around. "Most of us have been with this team since WBC 25. While we have only advanced out of the group stage once, we did eliminate Cassadaigua on their home turf when that wicked land hosted the WBC. This WBC is our last chance. I recently had the honor of an audience with King Paulus XV and His Majesty impressed upon me the importance of this WBC for myself, personally. If we do not advance to the playoffs, I will no longer be the captain of the National Baseball Team. Therefore, I will do everything within my power to lead the National Baseball Team to Vaugania and once we get to Vaugania, God Willing, we will ensure that the hosts do not win the WBC on their home turf. If we couldn't win a WBC at Royal Park, neither can they win a WBC as the host." - Petrus Tragus

This time, just 48 teams have entered the WBC. This smaller number of entries is unsurprising, given that the playoffs will be held in Vaugania. These 48 teams have been drawn into 8 groups of 6. This means that the WBC will be returning to the 10 game group stage format that was commonplace in past WBCs. This was also the first WBC since WBC 22, which also featured 48 teams in an 8 groups of 6 format, to receive just a single host bid. Notably, the field of 48 features Nova Anglicana, New Wolfopolis and Imota, all of whom impressed at the last WBC. It will also feature Welsh Cowboy, the BoF 53 champions, who struggled in their WBC debut, but showed potential while doing so. Interestingly, Mizuyuki and Northern Sunrise Islands will be debuting in this WBC. Mizuyuki is much better known for their soccer team, which somehow qualified for the World Cup in their second attempt. The Northern Sunrise Islands are known primarily in the international sports world as hosts, although they recently won the Di Bradini Cup, defeating the Polar Islandstates after the perennial World Cup Final losers had eliminated the heavily-favored Free Republics in the semis. But, that took place in the Equestrian States, so the Republicans weren't at their best. This WBC will also feature the return of Lycrabon, the hosts of the infamous WBC 24. At WBC 24, lax PED testing permitted Western Cuba to win a WBC title and do so with an ease that seems unlikely to be repeated now that we are firmly in the Parity Era of the World Baseball Classic. What other explanation is there for last WBC, which saw Sangti advance to the semis and a nation run by a notorious talking horse win the entire thing, sweeping our co-hosts on their home turf. Interestingly, 2 of the more successful newcomers from WBC 27 will not be returning. Southwick, despite impressing at WBC 27, did not get in a signup form in time and last WBC's surprise team from Britonisea, who somehow lucked into advancement, won a Round of 24 series and took Sangti to the limit before falling in the Round of 16. Britonisea looked flat-out awful at the last WBC, in spite of all their success. There is certainly no truth to the widespread rumors that Sanctii umpires rigged Britonisea's second game against the so-called "Gregoryisgodistan" to prevent that nation from advancing out of group stage.

Surprisingly, past WBC hosts seem to have ended up grouped together. Group 1 is an especially nightmarish group. Maklohi Vai and Vaugania, both ranked in the top 10, are in that group, along with Cassadaigua. Although not a WBC host, Welsh Cowboy also ended up in Group 1. While one would have expected us to end up in such a group, having to visit both Vaugania and Cassadaigua in the group stage, instead we ended up being the only WBC host to not have to face another WBC host. Group 4 is just as nightmarish as Group 1. Zwangzug, Saugeais and Qazox all ended up in the same group, along with New Wolfopolis and Mizuyuki, 2 very difficult non-hosts. Over in Group 7, the Talking Horse States end up in the same group with WBC 25 champion Darmen and Lycrabon, that nation infamous for their lax PED testing.

Fortunately, the Sanctii did not end up in an especially difficult group. Ranked 24th, we enter WBC 28 as a third seed. The first game for our Kingdom's National Baseball Team will be at Royal Park against The Sova Empire, ranked 18th in the world. The Sova Empire advanced out of the weak group last time that also included Britonisea, Western Cuba and Gregoryisgodistan, but did so with just a 5-3 record. If the National Baseball Team returns to their WBC 26 form, they can beat The Sova Empire Our Kingdom will then host The Kytler Peninsulae, an unranked nation from Rushmore. In our third match, we will visit The Sovan Antithesis, a lightly regarded team that are ranked 45th and not expected to go up too much in the rankings. After that match, the Sanctii will return home to host Port-du-sud, another unranked opponent. Port-du-sud's only previous international sports competition was the 4th edition of the Beach Cup where they won just twice in 12 matches. Finally, the Sanctii will visit Sicoutimont, a top seed who seem to be in decline after falling in the finals of WBC 26. Then, as usual, the schedule will be flipped and the National Team will play 5 more matches.

While the Sanctii seem to be in a weak group, expectations are still low for the National Baseball Team. When this WBC is all said and done, the National Baseball Team will probably, once again, miss the playoffs. Then, the King's Government will have a few months to think about what might have been, if only they had devoted the resources to changing up the National Team. One can only hope that this team performs above expectations. Royal Four will be broadcasting this WBC to relative indifference in the Kingdom. Petrus Tragus can only hope that God is with him, as he attempts to keep his captaincy with a strong performance in this WBC. "If I thought the National Baseball Team might actually end up in Vaugania, I would withdraw them from the World Baseball Classic. Since everybody in the entire multiverse knows they aren't going to qualify anyway, I have no problem letting them participate in this WBC." - King Paulus XV

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Eric Scevola (Nuel Panthers) Used to be somewhat of a percentage player. After managing the Panthers to triumph in what has been affectionately known as the "zombie series," is more concerned with maintaining a positive attitude in the clubhouse. Enters the tournament having just taken the Panthers to Zwangzug's first BCCC finals.

Zebra policy abandons the traditional idea of a bullpen. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). They'll start the group stage games in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).
