The 6th Fenbarric Shield

The Fenbarric Shield, in which the previous season's League and Cup winners play each other in the opening game of the season. This season sees League champions Oldcastle take on last year's surprise Fenton Cup winners, Division 3 side Tilletwood.

The 7th Fenton Cup

Last year, Tilletwood surprised everybody by beating favourites Flippers in the final in a tournament noted for the success of underdogs, but this year the big teams got their won back. All teams from Division 4 will start in the 1st Preliminary round, and all teams from Division 3 will enter in the 2nd Preliminary Round. After a 3rd Prelim Round in which Div 3 losers participate, the 1st Round will commence. All teams from Div 2 will enter in the 2nd Round, and all teams from Div 1 will enter in the 3rd Round.

Some of this season's highlights included Division 3 side Weald Wanderer's run to the quarter finals, and Flippers' 8-4 victory over Merton Rovers in the 3rd round. It all boiled down to the two most successful teams in recent Fenbarric football history, as Oldcastle Athletic, the league holders, faced last year's runners up Flippers. Oldcastle had scored 9 goals in their run to the final, including an incredible 5-1 victory over New Beetle in the semi final, whilst Flippers had scored an unprecedented 13 goals. It promised to be a great game...

A strange format, in which last year's winner (Borderlands FC) is not allowed to take part. The remaining nine teams in Division 1 are split into three groups, and play a match against each other. The three group winners go into a final group, where the winner is crowned champion, and does not qualify for next season's tournament.

The 8th Fenbarric Football League

New Beetle ran away with the title this season, winning with a record 78 points, by a record 18 points. This was the club's first ever silverware, and they secured it in dominant fashion, leading the table for most of the season. After coming so close two years ago, this victory was particularly sweet for them. Lower down the leagues in Division 4, East Fordham secured the double (with the Fenton Trophy) by beating Yaris Beach to the title on goal difference. Next year there are radical plans to change the league system, which may involve the introduction of many new teams. What is almost final however, is that Divisions 2 and 3 will be merged to become the new Division 2.

The Fenbarric Football League - Season 9, Part 1

The season has started, and it has started with a bang folks! We've already had a trophy won, the first games of this year's newly expanded Fenton Cup played, and a first a look at the newly professional teams in Division 4 taken. As is traditional the first game of the season was the Fenbarric Shield, contested by last season's League champions and Fenton Cup winners. As we all know, that means that New Beetle, the team that broke the record for most points in a season last year, will face Fenton Cup holders Oldcastle Athletic, who have the country's largest fan base. The game, played at Fenton Sports Stadium, would also be the first to feature one of the first ever foreign players to join a fenbarric club: Tham Kerric, the 22 year old Cenian right back, who joined New Beetle from FC Rookery 23 for 7 million. It promised to be a cracker.

Despite all their success last season, New Beetle never really looked like they were going to win the game, although they did go in level at half time, after Portune's header cancelled out Max Mixy's opener. Two quick goals from national team captain Jack Ackle midway through the second half, one a hit and run, the other a sublime volley from 20 yards, meant that the Latics cruised comfortably to their second successive shield success, having beaten Tilletwood FC 6-1 a full season ago.
The Fenton Cup has also started, with the first preliminary round, involving all Division 4 teams, taking place the day after the Fenbarric Shield. A total of 16 matches took place, and it was an opportunity to take a first glimpse at the new teams that have entered the association this season. The clubs are split into North and South for the preliminary rounds, to avoid travelling, save costs and retain decent crowd numbers. All the winners will progress to the second preliminary round, whilst all the losers will enter the Fenton Trophy first round.

One notable match in that lot is Dremton Wanderers huge victory over Gofforth Town. They took their opponents apart, and only conceded a consolation goal at the end. Grenville FC also mounted an incredible comeback from 2-0 down at half time against Redmond County, as they scored three goals in the last 10 minutes to go through to the second prelim round.
The League season is also underway, as the same new teams played out the first four rounds of Division 4. Again the Division is split into North and South, for the same reasons mentioned above, although the top two do compete in playoffs at the end of the season.

The season is starting to gather pace, as we finally kick off in all competitions, with the first matches of Divisions 1, 2 and 3, the Tri-Cup and the Fenton Trophy getting underway. However, the first matches played since the last update were the Fenton Cup second preliminary round, where the winners from the first prelim round, all from Division 4, meet. The matches are still split into North and South. Again, we haven't seen much of these teams, so it will be interesting to see how they go.

Those results just giving us a further indication of which teams are likely to be a success story. Freeton FC in particular look strong, having played 6 matches, won 5 and drawn 1. However, we'll see how they go when they play against some Division 3 opposition in the next round. Other matches played since the last update include the first round of the Fenton Trophy, the tournament for the teams that have been knocked out of the cup before the third round.

The Tri-Cup was another competition that kicked off in the last few weeks. For those of you don't know, this is a very strange competition, involving all Division 1 teams, except the team that won it last season. That makes nine teams, who compete in three groups of three. The winner of each group then goes into a final group, where the winner is crowned champion. This is a good early indicator of how each team has progressed over the break. The groups are drawn totally at random, which can mean that some unexpected teams make the final group. This year's groups are:

So, Merton Rovers manage to frustrate Oldcastle Athletic, who are saved by a Carlo goal just 11 minutes from time. However, the Latics will be confident that they can qualify. Borderlands and Flippers fought hard against each other, and eventually it finished honours even, despite the fact Flippers looked to be cruising to victory in the last 10 minutes; they were stunned by Casey's screamer from 25 yards. Killers will have been disappointed to missed out on at least a point as they dominated large parts of the game against South Fenton, but just couldn't get a goal.
Division 1 is also underway, and the first four rounds have been played. Who can get any early lead, and who will have a bad start?

Borderlands have surprised a few by being the only team to win their first four matches, whilst newly promoted Merton Rovers are doing well in fourth. However, New Beetle and MK Killers will be disappointed with their performances so far, and will want to up their game over the coming weeks.
