Díenstad Cup II

Once again, for the second time in history, national football teams from the nations which make up the region of Greater Díenstad will fight to make their way to the Second Empire. They will fight for the most coveted regional football trophy of Greater Díenstad (the second most prestigious cup that a Díenstadi nation can win in the sport of football). Unlike the first tournament, however, the forty-four nations which will begin the tournament are not guaranteed qualification. This year, a qualification stage will be included to filter only thirty-two teams into the final tournament. The qualification stage will not take part in the Second Empire. There will be two legs, to be fought in the stadium of any given nation's choice. The final tournament will take place in the Second Empire.

Good luck to all the squads who will fight for their placement.

Manager: Níal Ters; Ters replaced Glem Dalá on the onset of the World Cup 47 final tournament. Although Ters lost every match of World Cup 47 (final tournament) played, he continued to coach throughout World Cup 48, qualifying the team at the head of their group and winning one out of three matches in the final tournament. He will continue to manage the squad through this tournament and the upcoming Díenstad Cup.

Squad Listings:

Lars Kíendar (29), Goalkeeper: Lars Kíendar is the starting goalkeeper for Royal Club Española, one of the most successful teams in the Ligue Imperiotech (2016/2017 champions). He has a history of “standing in the right place, at the right time”, and is good at protecting the goal against breakaways. He also works well under pressure. Unfortunately, his young age (twenty-one) precludes him of having the necessary experience to be comparable to world renowned goalkeepers. Despite this, he has a bright future ahead of him, not just as a goalkeeper in the league, but as the starting goalkeeper for the national team.

Díendar Shost (25), Goalkeeper: Díendar Shost is a youth goalkeeper, hoping to gain experience to be bought into a premier league. He is quick, intelligent and is known to “stand in the right place”. Being tall, he is also good at stopping balls in the airs, including protecting against high-ball corner kicks into the area. This makes him one of the most powerful youth goalkeepers available. His first international game was in the tenth Di Bradini Cup, with the national under-21 football team. This will be his first World Cup appearance.

Agost Limpkin (19), Goalkeeper: Limpkin is a youth goalkeeper for Fedala Imperial (recently promoted from Fedala Imperial Youth), and first played for the U-21 squad in the eleventh Di Bradini Cup. He is known for his "lightning fast" reactions and precedent for "standing in the right place". He is one of the rising talents of the national league, and one of the best goalkeepers of his age. His true advantage comes in the fact that he is likely to progress at a faster rate than anybody else, giving him the opportunity to become the best goalkeeper in the country. This will be his first international appearance with the senior squad.

Nantes Resien (31), Wing Back: The young Nantes Resien is one of the premier wing backs in the Ligue Imperiotech. He plays for Royal Club Española and is one of the leading causes for the excellent connection between the defense and the offense in the team, which is in turn a major cause of their success in the league. He is also one of the best domestic set-piece kickers, explaining his often time played role of free kicker during direct kicks. He is one of the leading scorers of this type; scoring directly from the free-kick into the goal.

Lisander Tíermark (30), Wing Back: Lisander Tíermark is another well known and excellent wing back, and one of the few players on the national team which do not play in domestic league teams. Tíermark is a wing back for the Quintessence of Dust league team Highmark City Blues. Prior to his international career, he played for Fedala Imperial. He is fast, and is capable of both offensive and defensive tasks. His ambition, however, has led him to play an offensive role at the expense of defensive play, sometimes leaving a gap on the wings of the team’s defense.

Bur Xetal (27), Wing Back: Bur Xetal is one of the youngest players on the national team. His main purpose is to develop his skill and experience in order to formulate him into a good winger to replace others as they grow older, or if they are injured. Xetal is fast, smart and an extraordinary defender. He can only assist in the tasks in the midfield, and is good with connecting with strikers on top for quick counterstrikes. He is a valuable asset in the counter attack, and is known for extremely lethal accuracy when it comes to assisting a striker for a goal.

Kel Kanis (23), Wing Back: Kel Kanis is not only an excellent youth right-back, but he is also one of the best set-piece kickers of the under-twenty-one national team. He has the uncanny ability to drop a ball right into the area, on top of a “friendly player”, making him extremely dangerous when playing on the wings. He is, however, very susceptible to moving up front, sometimes sacrificing his defensive awareness. He can also play as an attacking midfielder.

Sergi Gut (32), Center Back: The relatively young Gut is a “center back in training”. That is, his purpose is to train and gain experience to replace either Fedal or Fernán in the future. He is one of the players which will form the core of the team in future world cups, allowing for a gradual increase in average skill. He current plays for Illusqué; his contract is coming to an end at the end of this season and he has expressed interests in playing on a foreign team.

Ladis Berk (28), Center Back: Ladis Berk played for Port Tenacious, as is one of the nation’s best young center backs. He is more experienced than most center backs of his age, and has good speed, easily earning him a spot on the national team. He is likely to be called-up for the regular national team, as well, for World Cup 47. He recently was awarded a contract by Eastport United.

Nantes Fersas (25), Center Back: Nantes Fersas is much like Ladis Berk, but younger. He is a promising youth player, and will reportedly be brought up to the first division by next season. However, his agent has been looking for an international outlet. He proved an illustrious U-21 player during DBC 10 and was thus called up for the national team.

Agin Kal (23), Center Back: A young, relatively inexperienced center back, he is nonetheless smart and fast. He is also a fast learner. He has been recently contracted by the Fedala Imperials for roughly eight million Ríokmarks, making him a relatively expensive youth transfer. He is one of the nation’s great future promises in defensive football. He participated in two previous Di Bradini Cups, and this will be his first tournament with the senior side.

Agno Míarnar (29), Defending Midfielder: Agno Míarnar is Dertish Malfor's replacement as a defensive midfielder. Dertish Malfor died of a heart attack during World Cup 46. Agno Míarnar plays in Port Elusive and has been contracted for the national team.

Sergi Bert (26), Defending Midfielder: Sergí Bert is the common starting defensive midfielder; he is a young, talented midfielder. Replaced Dertish Malfor in this position after this player's death. Sergí Bert played for a semi-professional team outside of the official league system. During World Cup 47 he showed his talent and was contracted by SC Lasft.

Joán Zeneti (28), Attacking Midfielder: Joán Zeneti is another international player. He is an attacking midfielder for the Somewhereistonian team Qasarian Sparta B. Nevertheless, he is extremely skillful and has been a key asset in Qasarian Sparta’s aspirations to rise to the “premier league”. He is also one of the best attacking midfielders present for the Macabee National Football Team, and is young enough to guarantee his presence in the next two world cups, at the very least. His strengths are in organization, and he has the capability to clearly set up lines of attack with other midfielders and strikers. That is, he’s successful in presenting opportunities for the goalscorers, and he has scored many goals himself. His capabilities as a midfielder have attracted the interest of other international managers, and he is likely to have a promising career.

Ses Dermán (32), Attacking Midfielder: Dermán’s main strengths are speed and range of shot, allowing him to connect with strikers for quick counter attacks. He is also known for his maneuverability on the field, to create scoring opportunities once the opposing team has formulated its lines of defense. Dermán plays for Eleptik, another team in the Ligue Imperiotech.

Tritor Maníac (23), Attacking Midfielder: Maníac is Gert's (27) replacement, designed to give fresh blood for future generations of Macabee National Teams. He is quick, intelligent and is also an excellent set piece kicker. He plays in Cafundéu, after being picked up during World Cup 48.

Georgi Bagnó (23), Central Midfielder: Georgi Bagnó is another young player, known for his speed. He played twice with the U-21 squad, and this will be his first international competition with the senior squad.

Georgi Rest (32) and Víeb Tahol (25), Center Midfielders: These two midfielders have similar skills and they both play for Royal Club Española (making this team the largest contributor to the national taem). Víeb Tahol is really the growing prodigy of the national team, and is likely to play in upcoming under-twenty-one competitions, as well. They are both fast and able to connect with other players, making them valuable assets for any playmaker in setting up a strategy. They can also help in defensive tasks.

Guy Lafos (24), Central Midfielder: Lafos is a playmaker, and is able to control the speed of the game. This makes him the team’s premier youth midfielder, and also a promising candidate for the regular national team. He took part in the 10th Di Bradini Cup, and also has been called up for the senior national team for the Díenstad Cup. Depending on the success of the team there, he may be called up for the 48th World Cup.

José Santos (23), Central Midfielder: José Santos is Uiric by birth, but due to Macabee laws which allow dual citizenship for those of Macabee ancestry, José Santos decided to apply for citizenship and play for the Macabee senior squad. He originally began his international career in the Uiri Under-21 National Football Team. He is intelligent and a good playmaker, and he is likely to be used as a frequent replacement for the squad starters (or even start himself, in some matches). He is the first foreign player to ever play for the Macabee National Football Team (or, more accurately, the only player born abroad).

Mika d’Angíel (32), Striker: Mika d’Angíel is one of the most valued strikers in the world, and already made his international presence during an under-twenty-one competition in Starblaydia, and then during both World Cup 44 and World Cup 45. He is the premier striker of the national team, and one of the highest scorers. He currently plays in the Yaforite league. During the Díenstad Cup he was the tournament's top scorer. This will be his final international tournament with the national team.

Shost Glen (29), Striker: Glen is a younger, powerful forward. His main strength is his accuracy, since he is not too good with creating opportunities to score. He is powerful when he has another player to connect with him on the top, since he is good at controlling and accurately shooting the ball with much strength. As a result, he is more of a direct attacker and mostly used when the midfield has control of the game.

Nether Falsó (29), Striker: Falsó is another powerful striker with his eye on goal, although he is not as accurate as Glen. He is, however, a better playmaker, allowing him to set up a shot if the shot is not immediately clear to him. This makes him a more valuable asset when the midfield does not have control of the game. As a result he and Glen alternate as substitutes during games, depending on how the midfield is doing.

Darsí Bon (23), Striker: A very young striker who was recently promoted to the main team from Illusqué’s youth club. He is intelligent and fast, giving him good qualities to break away from the defense. He had previously played internationally during the Di Bradini Cup, World Cup 47 and 48. He will be the team's captain, as well, relegating Mika d'Angíel to vice-captain.

Second Kit: all-white.

If my opponent posts first then he/she may:

Choose my scorers?: Yes

Injure my players?: No ("Very resilient", remember...)

Godmode other events?: yes, as long as it's funny.

_______________________________________________________________

They're not quite "anthropomorphic Bears" in the same way as the (main) people of 'Bears Armed', are but not quite "living Teddy Bears" either: Try to visualise beings who fit about halfway between those two concepts... They're not "scary" at all, their 'special weapon' is a ridiculously high (by most people's standards) level of cuteness... ;)
Despite their short stature they can run at comparable speeds to -- and perhaps more manouverably than -- most Humans... and they can jump very well if they need to intercept high shots...

Greal Opens with Huge Win
By Roger Marks

Greali soccer fans finally had something to cheer about after a long time. The opening day of Dienstand Cup II proved to be spectacular for the uneasy Greali team now mixed with a few newcomers. In a furious match, Greal crushed Indras 5-2. Ross Trent, the coach of the Greali team was pleased by his team's performance and he even complimented the opposing team's counterattack in the last half of the game which earned them two goals, but Howard Anderson proved to be a great asset scoring two goals in a space of just five minutes. The game proved to be a boomer for TV views too, with the number of viewers watching the match reaching new record heights. Sasha eagerly awaits the next match against Erukush or Vandaheim. (There wasn't a schedule.)

Going for Gold

The Uiric team has opened with a 3-1 win over Ecrip Yelsha, a team they played in the last edition of the cup. All the members of the team, especially those who participated the last time around. Niether of the team's two goalkeepers had any part in the disappointing 2nd place finish last time around. The goalscoring rivalry between two of Uiri's finest, Vitor Danra and Barbosa Zul, continues with Barbosa maintaining his statistical and game to game lead with 2 goals. Vitor managed to return the team's two goal lead to them after the Yelshans scored in the second half. Whether or not Uiri has what it takes to reach the top, only time will tell.

“Strongest Team in Díenstad” Debut with Defeat

That’s right. The third highest ranked team in Greater Díenstad region-wise, and the highest ranked team inter-region wise (WCC ranks), made their Díenstad Cup II debut by losing to Cazelia 0–1. Níal Ters’ boys did a horrible job of driving the ball and scoring goals (indeed, they scored none), and in the end lost to a single goal scored early on by an opposing squad which was just looking to do as much damage as possible before succumbing to the expected Macabee “onslaught”. Their expectations were dashed, though, when this “onslaught” never came, and instead their single goal saw them win three important goals for qualification. All of this in front of a team which managed to qualify for the three past world cups. Not even Darsí Bon could make his imprint. Admittedly, there were a large quantity of failed chances, but there is no justification for losing the first game . This is especially true when considering that this first match was played in the Imperial Stadium, where the Golden-Whites are supposed to win. This early loss is bringing back memories of Glen Dalá, who lost some of the early matches during Díenstad Cup I and then went on to win most of the remaining qualification matches, only to lose to Lamoni in the quarterfinals (that fateful 4–1 loss). The only difference is that most people expected much different from Níal Ters, given that he had finally seemed to give the team the chemistry needed to win major tournaments.

The Golden-Whites will now go into their next match, against Hailandkill, with an aura of far more respect. The loss to Cazelia at least served to open the team’s eyes to the fact that qualification for the final tournament will not be automatic as previously believed. Indeed, the team has been enlightened to what qualification will really take, and that is the same dedication that they have shown for other tournaments. Nonetheless, losing three out of a possible of eighteen points is a lot, and it will make it that much more difficult for the team to qualify. However, few still doubt that the Golden-Whites will make it through. The fear is whether or not the team will do better during the final tournament, especially during the knock-out stages where there are no second chances. But, all of that will have to be left to speculation, since the matter of hand is getting their in the first place.

Níal Ters was quick to defend the team during the post-game press conference, “Hey look, we were bound to lose one or two. It is better to get rid of the wrinkles before the wrinkles could cost you the game. We will now be that much stronger when we play Cazelia during the away leg, and we have two more games to prepare. We are taking part to win, not to “do well”. And, we certainly have enough quality to win.”

Mika d’Angíel also threw in a few words, “This will be my final tournament, and I would love to win a major tournament before I retire from the international scene. There is no doubt that all of us will apply absolutely everything into winning the Díenstad Cup. We will not defraud our fans.”

We will have to wait and see whether or not this will remain true indefinitely.

Many people would regard a 1--4 defeat as a very disappointing result, especially for their team's international debut, but 'The Fighting Teddies don't appear to be particularly disheartened by the scale of their loss to Lamoni's team: They and their manager, and some of the squad's other staff, are now seated around two long tables in the 'El Morocco' tea-rooms, enjoying a hearty meal.

"Bit of a poser having to face the regional champions first time out of the gate, eh?" murmured Teddybear Sherringham (who had scored their only goal of the match) as he spread pickle on the slice of mushroom pie with which he'd just been served.

"Aye, it was that," Wullie MacBroon replied. Still, 'A gleerit moose farns nae boggles' as they say; pass the skoons, will yeh?"

"Pass the what, old chap?" asked Bobby Bear, knowing full well what his colleague actually meant by the latter term -- although not what he'd meant by the (apparently) old saying that he'd just quoted -- but deciding to have some fun anyway.

"The skoons," Wullie retorted: "Thaese thingies o'er thaere..."

"Oh, you mean the scones, then?"

"Th'are nay
'scones', whatever yeh means by that wurrrd, they're 'skoons'..."

"No, they're 'Scones', as sure as we're all cute."

"Skoons."

"Scones, I tell you."

"Skoons! Ahchh, whatever, pass them anyway: And wuld there be any o' yon gooseberry jam left, too?"

(Theo Wainscott, who'd been quietly giggling at this exchange, helpfully passed the scones and jam along the table to Wullie who tucked in to them. All was then quiet for a little while, save for the noise that that many Bears unavoidably made whilst eating and drinking.)

"So anyhow, Bobby Bear asked their manager, "Who are we playing against next, and have they set the where and when?"

"And shall Berlawney die?" interjected 'Big Bill', remembering the line that had followed immediately on from that previous question in a song that he'd learnt back in primary school...
Tedward Reeve looked at 'Big Bill', briefly, shook his head, and then turned back to face Bobby Bear.

"Your guess is as good as mine, at this stage," he replied."It's to be either Morrdh, who are currently ranked at fourth in the region, or Tadjikistan who are 'only' twenty-third... but that's as much of a 'schedule' as the organisers have sent me yet: Sorry!"

"Oh well, that's not your fault," conceded Bobby. "In the meantime, while we're waiting to be told, I suppose we might as well get another round of sandwiches in. 'And is there Honey, still, for tea?' and all that..."

Sorry, dear," a passing waitress interjected: "Honey's off!"

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(OOC: Re Tedward's remark about the date of their next match not yet having been announded: I'm presuming, for the sake of RP (and the team's health), that the OOC schedule of matches on consecutive days doesn't actually apply IC too...)

(Oh, and do any of you recognise the comedy sketch by Peter Sellars that I've referenced in this post?)

What a spectacle! Uiri tops gcmak1 6-1

In what can only be described as the hottest rivalry ever to be present within the Uiric National Football Team, Uiri managed to score 6 goals. Zul opened it up with a goal less than 10 minutes into the first half. Danra quickly matched this feat in the 24th minute. Zul took the lead in goals once again when he scored in the 42nd minute. In the second half, Danra dominated but not before the team from gcmak1 managed to score of Rosall. Danra scored in the 60th and then soon after in the 75th minute. Zul wanted to match the three goals put up by Danra and he did manage to in the 82nd minute. This put the game away for Uiri.

The game was described as a stunning victory for the Uiric side who are probably going to face their toughest opponents yet in their game against Regulus Sirius or 'The Wizards'. Their two wins have surprised everyone, even some of their own fans and some Uiric observers have said that it is possible that these 'Wizards' may be using magic in order to win. While this is highly unlikely, the Uiric coaching staff will be sure to be watching very carefully as the next game will be in 'The Wizards' territory.

Surprise Opening Morridane Performance!

After achieving 4th place in the last Dienstad Cup tournament after a much needed rebound on their luck, the Morridanes began the Second Dienstad Cup with a flying start. Most people were shocked for a Morridane 2-0 win in their opening match against new-comers from Tadjikistan, though quite a few would agree it was largely one-sided.

However hopes for a flawless record this time around were dashed when, group leaders, Lamoni beat the sons of Morrdh 1-0 on the Cup's second day. This was only a minor setback given the Morridanes track record with regards to international football and morale amongst both the fans and team remains high.

Day Three saw that morale waver when the Morridanes drew five all against Teddy Bears Armed in a closely fought match. But Morrdh stays second in its group, lagging five points behind current leaders Lamoni. Only time all tell if the lads from Morrdh crash and burn this time around.

Skibereen had not participated in the First Díenstad Cup, and little was expected from the national team both at home and abroad, and glory be the boys did not disappoint! Yes little was indeed accomplished by the National football club and there is much talk of international politics playing a part in the very style of play the team has been demonstrating as it is clearly not the same hard hitting hard working style seen by these individual players here at home. This commentator can only say this ' C'mon ye bitters break teh bobles bust teh beacons ' , if you must loose boy loose like you're from Skibereen.

Group 2 remains wide open with the latest results putting all but one of the teams on five points after three teams. Stevid continued their average performance by drawing to Yanitaria 1-1, the nation team still doesn't have a sizable goal difference to make an impact on the group stage yet but the team is been follwed religiously by thousands of Stevidian faithful in a giant bid to keep up the team spirit to qualify with the big boys.
The national team has boasted to be one of excellance and with football the major sport in Stevid, national pride is on the table and the team manager and all the backroom staff know what it means to the country. The players more than anyone know that the reception they receive when they return to Stevid will reflect their performance in the Dienstad Cup.

Hopes to ride with the fans that their team will hopefully clash with The Macabees in the knock-out rounds. The war still recent in the minds of many, that particular fixture is one the police and other security services of both the Golden Throne and the Holy Empire wish to avoid. However the fixture is still a possibility though a remote one. Unless the Stevidian national team can take advantage of a less than brilliant start by the other teams in the league- they will not be progressing into the later stages of this prestigious cup.

Group 11 leaders Adaptus Astrates suffered a dent in their group qualifying campaign with a defeat to The People's Freedom. After winning two on the bounce in the group the Golden Eagles slumped to a 1-2 defeat at the Imperial Collisium in Caliban. The side featured two changes from the one that had won the last two games, with leading goalscorer John MacDougal and playmaker Roger Holden missing out through a groin strain and suspension respectively. Nevertheless, The People's Freedom took a derserved lead midway through the first half after a fine counter attacking move, and doubled their lead soon afterward with the Eagle's defence hlepless to stop going 0-2 down. Dave Nelson pulled back a late consolation goal on 82 mins, but it was a poor showing by the national team, leading to unenthusiastic applause when the referee blew for full time.
Manager Bryan Olsson questioned his team's mental application, and had this to say: "They were good goals, but right throughout the game we should have been in greater control like the way we were the last two games. It isn't about who we didn't have playing on the day, the fact is the players that were out there physically may not have been there in their heads. I now have to make sure that they account for themselves better in the next game. "

Uiri tops group. Will this last?

Uiri is at the top of its group but with the qualifying stage only halfway over, will Uiri be able to keep this up? Even if they top their group in this stage, they will still have another group of 4 to go through. Being considered the second best team in the region despite being only the 44th best team in the world, they are predicted to have good chances however they will have to beat out The Macabees (3rd in the region, higher than Uiri according to KPB rankings) and Lamoni (returning champions of Díenstad) in order to win the cup.

Can they do it? Barbosa Zul managed to score more goals in the past 6 years than Evan Okudil over his entire international career and Danra isn't very far behind. Fernando Rosall has proved to be a solid goalkeeper for the team. Their chances of winning are high as long as the midfield can keep any potential counterattacks at bay and the defence doesn't breakdown when the midfield fails.

Tedward Reeve scowled -- to the limited extent that it's actually possible for a member of his people to do so -- as he addressed the team.

"It's a very good job that the next game has been postponed," he told them, "because you lot obviously need a LOT more practice: You're giving up the ball FAR too easily. Look, I realise that your opponents so far have all been about twice your heights and sveral times your weights, but they're playing under the same rules that you are so they can't deliberately attack you. Hokay, so a few odf you have been knocked over -- and Wullie was accidentally kicked ten yards across the pitch -- but none of you have actually been hurt yet HAVE you? Just face up to the other team's players boldly, if you can't just use your superior agaility and dodge them, for honey's sake! We aren't out of this competiton yet, so let's see more playing like the comeback that you managed in your last game when 'Morrdh' were 4-2 ahead... Do I have to move 'SuperTed' into your starting line-up?"

The 'Fighting Teddies' are taking a break from training, during the long wait for their next Cup match, and some of them have started playing on trampolines...
