Maklohi Vai Baseball Tournament (Sign-ups CLOSED)

Postby Maklohi Vai » Thu Aug 23, 2012 3:57 pm

Maklohi Vai is proud to announce that it will host a baseball tournament in the upcoming weeks. It will be a 32 team bracket style tournament, single elimination. It will be scorinated using a baseball-specific Excel sheet that I created based on tournament experience.
RP bonuses will be given from before the tournament up until the final (see below for more).
Seeding is not first come, first serve; the exception is that the first four teams to sign up will get the highest seeds. The other seeds will be determined randomly, including the seed for my own team.
Signups are open from now until Tuesday at 8pm Eastern Time/5pm Pacific. Remember, only the first 31 teams will get in besides my own. If there are 32 teams before Tuesday, the signups will close and the pre-tournament RPs will start.
The tournament, in any case, will not start before Friday, with the first round being Friday night, and each night a round after that (see schedule below).
This thread will be an all-purpose thread; if you have an OOC comment, just preface it by saying so.

Schedule
Tuesday 8/28, 8pm eastern: Signups closed
Friday 8/31: top bracket 1st (play-in) round (only 4 will play)
Saturday 9/1: top bracket 2nd round, bottom bracket 1st and 2nd
Sunday 9/2: top bracket 3rd round, bottom bracket 3rd and 4th
Monday 9/3: top 4th (semifinal), bottom 5th (semifinal)
Tuesday 9/4: Championship (2 games if necessary)

RP policy
The RPs for this tournament will be only scores, stories, comments, or summaries. No injuring players out of spite. Because only a final score will be posted, participants are free to make up inning by inning scores.
Before the tournament, anyone can RP. After each round, the loser can RP, but it doesn't gain anything for them. Only the winner's RP counts, and a winner can post a RP after a loser does for the same match.
RPs will be a binary system: either you get RP credit or you don't. If you post something somewhat substantial, I will pretty much give you credit, but horrible spelling/grammar could null that.

Looks like you can use the first team now. Better competition for the tournament- that's good

Sign ups are now closed!

This tournament will run with 10 teams, meaning that there will be double elimination. It will still take 5 days to complete, starting on Friday. The schedule will be readjusted on the first post.

In addition to the 4 10 seeds, the randomized modifiers for the last 6 teams are:
Maklohi Vai (MKV) 8
Slembana (SLE) 9
Super-Llamaland (SLL) 8
Kintratar (KIN) 9
Kingdom of Me (KGM) 7
Napoleon Dynamite (NAP) 7

Bracket will hopefully be issued later tonight, depending on external factors.

And RPs are now open. Posting a roster will count as a pre-tournament RP.

ROSTER

Postby Super-Llamaland » Tue Aug 28, 2012 5:22 pm

Super-Llamaland National Baseball Team

Starting Lineup (BOLD is Lefty, ITALICS is SWITCHHITTER)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 29, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 24, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. 3B Alex Cameron- Age 29, #7 (None) A former benchwarmer, Cameron underwent a Jose Bautista- like transformation. Now is a fantastic 30-30 type hitter with good contact. Defense needs work.

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 30, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. RF Chris Harder- Age 28, #30 (LF) Chris Harder may be just a slightly-above-average hitter, but his throwing arm is one of the best his team has ever seen. Below average speed.

6. CF Brett Rochester- Age 23, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop. Without bunt singles, he's hitting .279, but with them, he's .305. He can also slap it over defenders when they pull in. Without these kind of hits, he's hitting .265. Average everything else.

7. LF Jake Addams- Age 25, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester.

8. C Tyler Thomas- Age 37, #3 (1B) A veteran who is a great plate handler.

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 22, #24(C/1B) Young and raw but with fantastic power.

BENCH

Jim Atkins, OF, #18, 33: A veteran who beats lefties to death: .381 against them compared to .235 versus righties. A good option for pinch-hitting, with a great arm in right, left or center.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 28: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average.

Duncan Roberts, IF, #18, 25: One of just two lefties on the squad, Roberts is a world-class defender. That's about it besides above-average speed and good contact hitting.

Hitting Coach- Steve Mays, 56
1B Coach- Nick Horry, 44
3B Coach- Stan Evans, 65

PITCHING

Starters

R Evan Masorka- 27, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 30, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties.

L Leo Davis- #51, 26- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Allan Roswell- #36, 38- He has seven different pitches- fastball, 2-seamer, sinker, slider, cutter, changeup, and eephus. The latter is rarely used but generates punchouts.

R Chris Lee- #31, 27- A knuckleballer who never throws anything else. The result? A 3.10 ERA in 7 years.

RELIEF

R Rick Jackson, #50, 31- A Long Reliever who normally starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 24, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Seventh Inning- Raymond- #53, 23: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter. Carson- 23, #53: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Darren Mueller/L Evan Daye/R Robby Irving- Setup: Mueller- #-3, 24: A slightly cuckoo pitcher (See: Jersey Number) who is one of two pitchers with an eephus on the team. mid-80s 2-seamer, low-60s eephus. Daye- #55, 27: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.
Irving: 28/#82- Robby Irving used to be a starter with a low-90s fastball, mid-80s sinker, low-80s slider, and low-70s curveball. Then he got injured and moved to the bullpen.

Nick Bowden- Closer: High 90s-fastball, low 90s- splitter. #43

PITCHING COACH- Chris Evans, 41
BULLPEN COACH- Vinny Marrero, 50
BULLPEN CATCHERS- Ray Nelson, 38, and Jack Aaron, 45.
MANAGER- Thomas Yaft, 41

7:03 PM

Thomas Yaft in the driver's seat. Chris Evans in the shotgun. Vinny Marrero and Nick Horry in the middle. Stan Evans, Ray Nelson, and Jack Aaron in the back. All silent in the rental van.

The bus of players was noisy.

"Nice shot Mills!"
"Great start Davis!"
"Nice shirt, Danks!"

All abuzz.

But the coaches were silent. Despite a record of six and four, they fell to third place in their first games ever.

No playoffs. No publicity. Just six wins and four losses. Maybe a ranking. That was all.

This time they would do better.

At least they hoped so.

Here is the preliminary winners bracket.
Unfortunately, I can't host it anywhere, so I'll keep a bracket on my computer and just post matchups.

Winner's bracket round 1:
Kingdom of Me vs. Super-Llamaland; winner faces Free Swiss States
Maklohi Vai vs. Napoleon Dynamite; winner faces Estope

Winner's bracket Round 2:
KGM/SLL vs. FSS
REE vs. KIN
GRZ vs. SLE
MKV/NAP vs. EST

Round 3:
KGM/SLL/FSS vs. REE/KIN
MKV/NAP/EST vs. GRZ vs. SLE...
And that's all of the top bracket I'll post for now. Rounds will come as they happen from now on.

9-8 12 inning win!

Postby Super-Llamaland » Fri Aug 31, 2012 5:24 pm

The game was about to begin, as Super-Llamaland trotted out this against their opponents:

CF B. Rochester
SS D. Bradley
RF C. Harder
1B D. Mills
3B D. Stephenson
2B M. Danks
LF J. Addams
C T. Thomas
P E. Masorka

No Alex Cameron.

Cameron had injured himself, twisting an ankle, the night before. He was day-to-day.

Masorka got through the first, throwing 38 pitches and allowing a grand slam. 0-4.
But in the second, Backup Third-Baseman Drew Stephenson tripled. Addams walked, Thomas walked, Masorka struck out.

Brett Rochester lined one into the right-center gap.

3-Run Triple.

Darren Bradley smashed one into the left-center gap.

2-Run Homer.

After the second, it was 7-4 Llamas.

Masorka threw five and left.

Rick Jackson threw three and left.

Top of the ninth, Nick Bowden, the closer, gave up a two-out, two-on home run. And then another one. 7-8.

Bottom of the ninth. Danny Mills walked, but Stephenson and Danks struck out.

Up came Jake Addams who got absolutely nothing on a pop-up...

right in between in the second baseman and the center fielder. Mills to third. Addams stole second.

Pinch-Hitter Keith Duncan, 24, stepped up and lined a clean single to center. Addams was out at home, but it was tied.

12th inning. No offense at all.

Tommy Yaft needed help within a man on first and zero out.

So he pinch-hit Alex Cameron for Chris Harder. Cameron to third, Stephenson to left, Addams to center, Rochester to right.

Cameron slammed a hanging slider for an RBI double.

And 9-8 is how it ended.

Final: Maklohi Vai 6-4 Napoleon Dynamite

Maklohi Vai had an energizing start today at the first Maklohi Vai Baseball Tournament, putting them into the winner's round of eight. Earning the win, Rom Lunomai threw 7 innings while giving up 9 hits, 4 walks, striking out 6, and letting in 4 earned runs. Katwo threw the eighth perfectly, and Maruamo Riwara got the save by closing out the ninth.

Maklohi Vai Scoring Summary:
2nd: Mae'ao hit a solo shot to right.
5th: Arnao led off the inning with a double. Moalna'akai Lai and Wolo Rakinalmanai were both walked to load the bases for the pitcher Lunomai, but he struck out. Aputo Roma’ai hit a single to drive in Arnao and Lai, putting Rakinalmanai at third. Iao Laina hit a double to drive both of them in. Ri'ino Uilani flied out to right, advancing Laina to third, who then scored on a single by Mae'ao.

Stat update:
HR: Mae'ao 1
RBI: Mae'ao 2, Aputo Roma'ai 2, Iao Laina 2

Commentator Wolmoto Likani had some thoughts after the game. "We fought hard today. The offense got going and did its job. I would like to see fewer runners on base allowed by the pitching, though."
