World Baseball Classic 23 Everything thread

Postby Qazox » Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:48 pm

It all started here. Well not 100% offically. It all began about 90 years ago when a nation named American Fist had a dream of starting an international baseball tourney. While there had been a few before the first World Baseball Classic, the WBC is the one that has stuck around. But unfortunately just before the beginning of the 1st WBC, American Fist disappeared and after a lengthy discussion, Qazox was chosen to host the first edition 90 years ago, a title won by Az-cz, the first of 3 consecutive.

What started here continued to return, first as a replacement host for Neufundland at WBC 4, and just 2 years later for WBC 5. Miclhamans remember theose two WBC fondly, as they were the Warriors only two WBC titles to date. The next time Qazox hosted, the dynasty known as Newmanistan offically got it's start as the most successful team in WBC history won their first title here. And the last time Qazox hosted the WBC, Taeshan, long a WBC laughingstock, ended the jokes with their first title, over a team that has become one of the WBC powers, Cassadaigua.

So much WBC history has taken place in Qazox, and once again it is time for us to host. Who will make history this time?

Nation: Federated States of Sakurakoku
Demonym: Sakuran
Code: SKR
Nickname: Silver Wolves (or just Wolves for short if no confusion can be made)
Home Stadium: Central Bay Stadium (capacity: 62,306) in Kugamachi. DH will be used for home games.
Modifier: -1

Fielders - Name, Position, Uni#, B/T
Starters (in order, starting position in bold)
1. Yuuhi Katou, CF, #29, S/L. Good legs means he can cover a great deal of the outfield and speed along the basepaths.
2. Mami Kaneko*, 3B/LF, #25, L/L. Bat is pretty good. Known to make elegant defensive plays despite being "wrong"-handed.
3. Hikaru Horie, 1B (DH), #12, R/R. Good bat control means he often comes up with clutch hits. Not the fastest runner but his solid grasp of the game means he'll attempt steals more than others with his speed...and succeed.
4. Mio Yamagishi*, RF/2B, #5, S/L. Can hit hard but often inconsistent. Not great speed but known to make incredible catches when needed.
5. Genji Furukawa, 2B, #16, R/R. Strong bat and solid defense.
6. Satoshi Takeda, SS, #45, S/R. Strengths are in contact hitting and solid defense.
7. Akiyoshi Kimihara, 1B, #22, R/R. Shows a lot of promise with his raw power, but still a work in progress.
8. Kappei Kusao, SS/LF, #19, R/R. Good speed and can cover a lot of ground on defense.
9. Kazuhide Suzuki, C, #42, R/R. Strong, accurate arm means it's difficult to steal bases against him.

NOTE: If the DH is not being used, the pitcher bats ninth and all other starters shift up one spot.

Bench
Mitsuo Dojima, 3B/SS, #24, R/R. Quick feet and a threat on basepaths. Not the most accurate thrower, but can make defensive plays few others can.
Osamu Tanonaka, C/1B, #69, R/R. Back-up catcher with a decent bat.
Azusa Uemura*, 2B/SS/RF, #9, S/R. Good feet, decent glove, subpar bat.
Saki Yasuzumi*, RF/LF, #30, L/L. Chiefly a lefty bat option off the bench. But it's a pretty good bat.

Pitchers - Name, Uni#, B/T
Starters (in order)
Kyo Kunimoto, #1, L/L. Control pitcher whose repertoire includes a slurve, circle change, curve, and 2-seamer.
Shizuru Yoshino*, #33, R/R. Relies on knuckleball and an occasional 12-6 curve to confuse batters and make them look silly, which tends to play into the mind games she likes to play.
Kanji Namiya, #44, R/R. Doesn't have the nastiest pitches, but consistently goes deep into games (though whether this will be true in a four-player rotation remains to be seen).
Seiji Aishi, #32, R/R. Has a powerful fastball with a slider and change-up to keep batters honest. Accuracy is somewhat of a concern, though.

Relievers
Manabu Hashimoto, #23, R/R. Swing man.
Hironori Junji, #8, R/R. Long reliever.
Sadaharu Miyanohara, #21, R/R. Long reliever.
Yuriko Saito*, #74, R/R. Long reliever.
Yoriko Hanamura*, #34, L/L. Middle-relief.
Toyohiko Kono, #38, L/L. Middle-relief.
Reito Tachibana, #20, R/R. Set-up pitcher.
Natsuki Minamoto*, #10, L/L. Closer.

Manager: Hayato Kojima, #0

Beldonian World Baseball Classic 23 Team
Coaches:
Manager—Jason Musgrave, age 50—Musgrave is the manager of the Scarborough Lions of Beldonian Major League Baseball and has managed some formidable teams in recent years. In the past three years, his teams have had made three playoff appearances, including trips to the championship and two conference championships. However, he has never been able to capture a title, and he looks to do so here at the WBC. Musgrave is recognized for having the best mind for baseball in Beldonia and tends to be more knowledgeable about hitting than fielding. He tends to forgo small ball in favor of trusting his players to get hits and knock each other in.

Bench Coach—Pops MacClendon, age 56--MacClendon is the manager of the small market Garthon Alligators of the BMLB. He hasn’t had very good teams of late, due to his team’s monetary struggles; however, he won two domestic titles decades ago and is highly respected by his peers and players.

Pitching Coach—Richard Hamm, age 45—Hamm is the manager of the Hatch City Dominators and made a name for himself by being the best pitching coach in the BMLB for the Benry Grizzlies. Switched to managing with the promise of a substantial salary raise and managed the Dominators to a .500 record this past season. Nevertheless, his prowess in motivating pitchers is unrivaled in Beldonia.

First Base Coach—Monte Wynne, age 72—Wynne is the manager of the Hantz Provincial University Tigers baseball team. Thirty years ago, he managed in the BMLB with limited success; since has become the most decorated college manager of all time. Mercurial and hotheaded, he is slightly resentful that he was not given the position of manager.

Third Base Coach—John Raisman, age 41—Raisman is the manager of the Lenahan Padres of the BMLB. The manager of the defending BMLB champions, he was a late replacement for Al Jones as a reward for winning. A bit of a passive man, it is widely believed that his managing had little to do with the Padres’ success and is a controversial choice for coach.

Lineup:
LF—Goose Finley, age 26—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: .281, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 67 SB—Finley is a member of the Warfield Warblers and over the past few seasons has established himself as the premier speedster in the BMLB and a solid fielding talent in left. A big, eccentric personality, his biggest challenge will be to not irk his coaches and the umpires.

SS—Pat Meares, age 28—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .303, 28 HR, 87 RBI, 12 SB—Why he’s a short stop, no one is sure, but the fact of the matter is that this six foot two, two hundred forty pound physical specimen is the best hitter at his position in the BMLB. Plays for the Faxhold Giraffes. Has a keen eye and draws plenty of walks. One of the worst fielding short stops in the league.

3B—Justin Wooper, age 32—Bats S, Throws R—Recent season stats: .293, 38 HR, 130 RBI, 6 SB—Wooper, a veteran with the Benry Grizzlies, is now at that point in his career when he’s starting to chase career milestones and records. On the downslope, but still one of the best all-around hitters in the league. Hits low pitches the best and does a serviceable job fielding at third base.

RF—Ray Monte, age 27—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .346, 32 HR, 128 RBI, 21 SB—Coming off an MVP season with the Lenahan Padres, Monte is probably the best hitter in the BMLB right now. A five tool player who does just about everything well, he seems to be the player to watch on the Beldonian squad. In addition to MVP, pulled off a dandy double by winning the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.

1B—Steve Eeahlp, age 36—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .290, 30 HR, 96 RBI, 2 SB—The longtime player got off to an awful start with the Radnor Owls and looked washed up. After a midseason trade to the Scarborough Lions, he became the hottest player in the league for the second half of the season. Despite this, there are concerns that he could revert to playing dismally and is on the team because of an outstanding tryout. More of a contact hitter, his power numbers from last season are career highs even with the terrible start.

C—Herman Gludge, age 31—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: .246, 53 HR, 111 RBI, 0 SB—Stalwart catcher for the Canalave Sharks, he paced the league in homeruns last season but had a meager batting average. A classic all or nothing player, Gludge is known for his rowdy, unhealthy lifestyle; his bad knees will surely shorten his career. Isn’t the best fielder behind the plate but knows the pitchers well. Strikes out a lot.

CF—Joe Cod, age 22—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .332, 18 HR, 86 RBI, 32 SBCod is coming off of a great rookie year with the Lenahan Padres. Won the Rookie of the Year award and a gold glove. An arrogant, self-absorbed player, he polarizes the fans and is always exciting to watch on the diamond and during interviews.

2B—Gabe Mage, age 25—Bats S, Throws R—Recent season stats: .291, 11 HR, 62 RBI, 22 SBDecent second baseman for the Radnor Owls; is on the team because of a sharp decline in talented second basemen in the BMLB and had an outstanding tryout. Is not expected to be a big factor; likes inside pitches far more than outside pitches.

Pitcher’s Slot

Bench
C—Leroy Johnson, age 25—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: .300, 12 HR, 71 RBI, 6 SBProbably a better player than Gludge, but was kept on the bench due to Musgrave’s decision that the lineup needed more power. A good natured player and a prankster on the Benry Frigate Birds who loves to hit bloops up the middle. Best contact hitter at his position.

1B—Mike Danks, age 27—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .288, 42 HR, 144 RBI, 7 SBBy every measure, Danks, playing for the Trainta Gorillas, had a better season the Eeahlp; he has been relegated to the bench by virtue of a ridiculous hot streak by the old veteran and is very resentful. Won a Silver Slugger and does a good job fielding. Will serve as designated hitter in lineups that call for it and will bat in the sixth position.

SS—Lee Munoz, age 20--Bats S, Throws L—Recent season stats: N/AIs a college baseball player on the Hantz Provincial University Tigers and finds himself on the national team because of Coach Wynne. Is a dynamic young short stop with the talent to become a big star one day, but will likely not see too much action during this WBC.

LF—Rich Albert, age 31—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .276, 31 HR, 108 RBI, 11 SBA perennial All-Star playing for the Wellesley Bearcats. Known for his mustache as well as his potent bat; is not a very good fielder. Pulls the ball to right field frequently.

RF—Simeon Crowley, age 40—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: .231, 20 HR, 71 RBI, 1 SBBrother of the king of Beldonia, and is really only on the team for that reason. One of the best to ever play the sport, he is about to retire from the Benry Grizzlies. Won’t see much action.

Rotation
SP—Mark Bellanger, age 33—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 18-8, 2.98 ERA, 228 K—Even with age, Bellanger, pitching for the Lenahan Hawks, proved last season that he’s one of the best pitchers in the game by winning the Top Pitcher award in the BMLB. A patriotic player with a lot of enthusiasm for his country and a workhorse. Has an excellent fastball and a good slider.

SP—Marty Effenrube, age 30—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: 15-4, 2.49 ERA, 241 K—You can credit Effenrube’s lack of wins last season to getting absolutely no run support from the Hantz Boars. Nearly picked up Top Pitcher award last season. Has a good fastball, devastating curve and solid changeup.

SP—Eric Chowen, age 28—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: 20-10, 3.62 ERA, 178 KChowen, a pitcher for the Lenahan Padres, doesn’t have the most overpowering stuff in the world, but he did prove one thing—he can win games; he can win big games, evidenced by his perfect record in the playoffs. He has a decent fastball and good changeup, among other pitches.

SP—Greg Judge, age 27—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 17-8, 3.12 ERA, 224 K—Had a breakout year for the Hatch City Dominators, largely thanks to the coaching of Richard Hamm. Has a strong fastball and a solid power curve, along with a potent slider. Hopes to quiet critics who think his good recent season was a fluke.

SP—Ronnie Ray, age 22—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 7-12, 4.01 ERA, 278 KIs on the team because he’s a member of the Garthon Alligators, managed by Coach Pops MacClendon. His stuff hasn’t fully developed yet, but he did lead the BMLB in strikeouts last season. Finds himself in the rotation due to an outstanding tryout.

Bullpen:
RP—Ben Bruszcynski, age 33—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 63 G, 3-1, 3.02 ERA, 142 K—Playing for the Scarborough Lions, Bruszcynski has proven to be the top long reliever in the BMLB, logging as many innings as some starting pitchers. A seasoned vet and a junkball pitcher, he throws a slurve, palmball, and forkball.

RP—John Harding, age 38—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: 13-11, 3.91 ERA, 96 K—One of the only knuckleball pitchers in the BMLB, Harding is a member of the Benry Frigate Birds and throws his favorite pitch almost exclusively. Normally a starter, is in the bullpen for the WBC. Not a great pitcher by any means, is on the team because of his experience and will probably be used sparingly.

RP—John Davis, age 42—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 70 G, 7-1, 2.32 ERA, 48 K—A solid long reliever with a lot of experience, Davis is coming off a career year at age forty-two with the Trainta Gorillas. An easy going personality; very low strikeout rate. Throws a good fastball despite his age.

RP—Tom Stevens, age 27—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: 16-9, 3.30 ERA, 157 K—Another starter who is in the bullpen for the WBC. Had a pretty good season last year for the Radnor Owls. Stuff isn’t overpowering; tosses an average fastball and curve.

RP—Adam Mossburgh, age 26—Bats R, Throws R—Recent season stats: 36 SV, 2.21 ERA, 52 K/55 IP—Potent young closer from the Lenahan Padres; will play a setup role in the WBC. Throws a hard fastball; breaking pitches still need work.

RP—Gary Colesey, age 24—Bats L, Throws L—Recent season stats: 28 SV, 3.41 ERA, 110 K/60 IP—Blows a lot of saves but has an astronomical strikeout rate. Closes for the Canalave Sharks; will play a setup role at the WBC. Has a great fastball and a hard slider; bad changeup.

CL—Dean Cornfield, age 31—Bats R, Throws L—Recent season stats: 43 SV, 1.81 ERA, 60 K/58 IPComing of a Relief Man of the Year award with the Benry Grizzlies; is able to save games under pressure. Has a decent fastball, outstanding slider and changeup.

Team Nickname: The Wild Kards
Demonym: Karditani
TLA: KRD

Manager: Ricky Ledée, 44 years old, #33

Lineup: (Batting order, position, name, age, uni #, bat/throw, info)
1. 2B Ricky Hormuz, 30, #9, R/R; Lines balls everywhere and has base stealing down to a science. Horrid with the leather.
2. CF Rock Smith, 33, #36, S/R; A solid contact hitter with good speed and a good glove. Not much behind his swings, though.
3. RF Batl Skard, 27, #5, L/L; Another good contact hitter who WILL make you pay if you hang something. Recently shifted from 1B to the outfield and often uses his height to rob would-be homeruns over National Stadium's ridiculously short right-field wall.
4. LF Gale Wind, 18, #22, R/R; A Pegasus (who ties her wings to be fair; she can still jump higher than most people) with a cannon for a wing. After a breakout performance in WBC21, she has been shifted up in the lineup to accommodate her new-found power.
5. 3B Jeffery Snider, 29, #45, R/R; Plays the hot corner well and has a pretty hot bat.
6. SS Short Stop, 22, #68, L/L; An earth pony that darts around the field like he owns it. Snappy on the basepaths.
7. 1B Jesse Portier, 34, #54, L/L; Portier is your prototypical run-of-the-mill DH. Pretty good average, pretty good pop, deathly afraid of balls being hit in his general direction.
8. C Geoff Jones, 24, #3, R/R; Leaves runners from both teams out to dry frequently.
9. Pitcher (Aaron Aaron if DH is being used)

Bench:
C Chris Carmel, 38, #12, R/R
SS/3B Laura O'Neil, 26, #6, R/R
SS/2B Starline Caster, 16, #13, R/R (Unicorn)
OF Aaron Aaron, 24, #44, R/R
OF Alexi Alonso, 27, #87, L/L
UTIL Corry Redspan, 18, #1, S/R

Rotation:
P Casey Brant, 26, #4, R/R; Karditan's resident flamethrower signed on with the Saxet Cowboys. Slings a flaming fastball and slider (both hit 97 regularly; fastball can hit 100 at times) that look identical out of his hand. Has a decent changeup. Throws sidearm.
P Money Ball, 22, #65, L/L; A technical unicorn pitcher who takes the mound for the Bashtun Bloody Sox. Specializes in deceptive breakers. Can throw anything that curves effectively and has developed a baffling upward-breaking Slurve.
P Cliff Leaper, 20, #31, L/L; The Fillydelphia Filly's Pegasus ace. Jams righties with a hard cutter and has a dirty slider that can get batters on both sides whiffing.
P Scott Kasmeer, 29, #19, L/L; The one bright spot on the Rachevij Islanders. They're not a horrid team, but they're full of aging regulars. Kasmeer isn't too far from being over the hump himself but he finally found his stride in the last season of the KBL, winning 23 of the Islanders' 75 wins. Good rising heat, good dropping change, good biting overhand curve.

Bullpen:
LR Firmer Delmar, 27, #27, L/L
LR, Arthur Roads, 39, #41, R/R
MR, Jhonny Pearseed, 33, #2, L/R
MR, Pedro Feliciaro, 30, #39, L/L (Lefty Specialist, throws sidearm)
MR, Brad Chadford, 29, #53, R/R (Submarine)
SU, Peter Quarry, 34, #14, R/R
CL, Jasmine Carr, 27, #74, R/R

Home Stadium: National Park in Neighpon. 40,000 Capacity. 415ft straight left, 430ft left-center, 435ft straight center, 370ft right-center, 290ft straight right.

Super-Llamaland National Baseball Team

Starting Lineup (BOLD is Lefty, ITALICS is SWITCHHITTER)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 29, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 24, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. 3B Alex Cameron- Age 29, #7 (None) A former benchwarmer, Cameron underwent a Jose Bautista- like transformation. Now is a fantastic 30-30 type hitter with good contact. Defense needs work.

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 30, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. RF Chris Harder- Age 28, #30 (LF) Chris Harder may be just a slightly-above-average hitter, but his throwing arm is one of the best his team has ever seen. Below average speed.

6. CF Brett Rochester- Age 23, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop. Without bunt singles, he's hitting .279, but with them, he's .305. He can also slap it over defenders when they pull in. Without these kind of hits, he's hitting .265. Average everything else.

7. LF Jake Addams- Age 25, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester.

8. C Tyler Thomas- Age 37, #3 (1B) A veteran who is a great plate handler.

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 22, #24(C/1B) Young and raw but with fantastic power.

BENCH

Jim Atkins, OF, #18, 33: A veteran who beats lefties to death: .381 against them compared to .235 versus righties. A good option for pinch-hitting, with a great arm in right, left or center.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 28: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average.

Duncan Roberts, IF, #18, 25: One of just two lefties on the squad, Roberts is a world-class defender. That's about it besides above-average speed and good contact hitting.

Hitting Coach- Steve Mays, 56
1B Coach- Nick Horry, 44
3B Coach- Stan Evans, 65

PITCHING

Starters

R Evan Masorka- 27, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 30, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties.

L Leo Davis- #51, 26- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Allan Roswell- #36, 38- He has seven different pitches- fastball, 2-seamer, sinker, slider, cutter, changeup, and eephus. The latter is rarely used but generates punchouts.

R Chris Lee- #31, 27- A knuckleballer who never throws anything else. The result? A 3.10 ERA in 7 years.

RELIEF

R Rick Jackson, #50, 31- A Long Reliever who normally starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 24, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Seventh Inning- Raymond- #53, 23: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter. Carson- 23, #53: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Darren Mueller/L Evan Daye/R Robby Irving- Setup: Mueller- #-3, 24: A slightly cuckoo pitcher (See: Jersey Number) who is one of two pitchers with an eephus on the team. mid-80s 2-seamer, low-60s eephus. Daye- #55, 27: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.
Irving: 28/#82- Robby Irving used to be a starter with a low-90s fastball, mid-80s sinker, low-80s slider, and low-70s curveball. Then he got injured and moved to the bullpen.

Nick Bowden- Closer: High 90s-fastball, low 90s- splitter. #43

PITCHING COACH- Chris Evans, 41
BULLPEN COACH- Vinny Marrero, 50
BULLPEN CATCHERS- Ray Nelson, 38, and Jack Aaron, 45.
MANAGER- Thomas Yaft, 41

The Califas Guide to Constructing a Baseball Roster
Basic structure of a baseball roster:

1. Starting Pitcher rotation. Realistically, these are exactly three, four or five players of the SP position who start the ballgame as pitcher every 3-5 days and try to stay in as long as they can, but aren't involved in gameplay otherwise. It's good enough to just name a few people, but it helps to flesh out their pitching style, too. The easiest way to do this is probably to list their pitches, especially if you give them in order of how deadly each pitch is for that pitcher. Realistically, all starting pitchers throw a "fastball" (4-seam fastball, top speed 85-106) and most throw a curveball or some other breaking pitch, plus one or two other pitches. However, some outliers throw only different kinds of fastballs (4-seam, 2-seam, split-finger, cutter...) or different kinds of breaking balls (curveball, slider, changeup, slurve, circle change, forkball, knuckleball...). Most have one that makes them rich, one that gets them over, and one or two that are good enough to throw in every once in a while and keep things fresh.

2. Starting lineup. If you use the DH, this should be 9 players and you should call the game something stupid like Clownball or Baseketsellout, since your game has all the sporting integrity of a WWE grudge match in blackface. If you don't use the Designated Hitter, you are ready to play baseball, and your starting lineup probably looks something like this:
1. Leadoff Hitter. May or may not be an exceptional hitter, but is one of the most consistent batters, with steady performance at the plate. Your leadoff hitter is the best baserunner from among the batters who get on base most often, be it by walk, balk, hit or error. Ideally, your leadoff hitter should either be very fast, like Rickey Henderson; or an excellent tactical baserunner who can steal bases on skill and instinct, like Shawn Green. Remember, this player is the primary run-scoring threat, not the primary home-run-hitting threat. Again, hitting the ball well is not strictly required, but it helps. Most of these players won't hit a lot of home runs, but some will.
Likely positions: 3B, CF, RF, (2B, SS)
2. The second person in your batting lineup is one of the best at reaching base, or one of the fastest. Should be a pretty good hitter, but doesn't have to be the best. This person is considered a baserunning threat, but may not be a home-run-hitting threat. Hitting the ball with some consistency is generally required, and it helps if this person is an expert bunter, too. Home-run power has almost nothing to do with this position, but it doesn't hurt.
Likely positions: 3B, CF, RF/LF, (2B, SS) It is extremely unlikely that both your 2B and your SS are good hitters near the top of the lineup.
3. The third batter is a very good hitter, preferably a balanced one as well. However, a power hitter or a contact hitter is acceptable here. Just remember that the third position is crucial, but it's not as much about baserunning as the leadoff position, and not as much about power as the cleanup position. This is often the second- or third-most physically powerful hitter, though, in terms of raw strength and home runs.
Likely positions: 1B/3B, LF, RF/CF
4. Cleanup Hitter. Usually, the #1 home-run hitter goes here. The idea is that the first three batters should get on base with some regularity, so the cleanup hitter can drive them in with home runs and other extra-base hits. Alternatively, a team without much in the way of home-run power may simply put their most productive hitter here. Either way, this should be the scariest moment for the opposing pitcher. A realistic and common flaw for this hulking slugger is bad speed or defense.
Likely positions: 1B/3B, LF, RF/CF, (C) Catchers are usually bad hitters, but a small handful of them hit a lot of home runs.
5. The #5 hitter must be one of the best hitters on the team, and is usually a power hitter. The reason is that, if the #5 is an inconsistent batter or less of a home-run threat than the cleanup hitter, opposing pitchers may walk the cleanup hitter and take away that scoring threat. So this is usually someone who strikes fear in the heart of opponents, but isn't quite powerful enough for the cleanup spot yet. Power is not strictly required if this batter drives in a lot of runs.
Likely positions: 1B/3B, LF, RF/CF, (C, 2B) [i]The occasional second baseman, like Bret Boone, has enough power and skill for this spot.
6. Sort of the "journeyman" slot. Hopefully not a bad hitter (though if your team doesn't score, it probably should be for RP reasons). However, nothing about this hitter stands out enough [anymore?] to put them in one of the more specialized slots. Probably a decent hitter whose defense is good enough to keep the starting spot, and not much more.
Likely positions: Any, except 1B or LF.
7-8. Poor hitters whose lack of offensive productivity is either (A) pushing them closer to the bench or (B) perfectly acceptable because the team relies on these individuals' defense.
Likely positions: C, SS, CF, 2B

3. Bench and bullpen. An American major-league roster has a total of 25 players, so if you're aiming for that, you have 12-14 slots to fill here. Probably four or more of them should be Relief Pitchers (RP), one or two of whom can also be (a) Closing Pitcher(s) (CP). You should have one or two pinch-hitters, maybe a lefty and a righty. It's also common to have one or two "utility infielders" (IF) who can play any of the infield positions in a pinch, and/or "outfielders" (OF) who can do the same in the outfield, plus an extra catcher or two (maybe one of your catchers always starts with a certain pitcher because of their rapport). Some teams also have multiple players of roughly equal caliber for a single defensive position and play "second base by committee" or "catcher by committee", rotating them out every few days.

Good luck and happy hitting!

Melatia National Baseball Roster

Information

Formed this year in 150 MC, the Melatia National Baseball Team is run by the Melatia Baseball Federation, which also runs the Melatia Baseball League and its minor affiliates. The President of the Melatia Baseball Federation is Trent Rogerson. He is also the commissioner of the MBL. The players on the national team are chosen by a 12-person commission, consisting of the managers and coaches, and a few MBF executives. Most players play in the MBL, however, some of them are from other leagues.

Coaches

Number - Name - Position - Age

26 - Leroy Hunt - Manager - 58
An old veteran, Hunt is a disciplinarian, and he will not hesitate to suspend players who break curfew or other team rules. He is open to the media, and is usually quite polite to them, however, he will occasionally go on a rant in front of a reporter. He likes small ball and employs a lot of sacrifice bunts and steals. His favorite type of player has a good work ethic, is fast and scrappy, and hits for contact. He will not tolerate errors.

27 - Max Thomas - Bench Coach - 40
Seen as the heir to the managerial position, Thomas is a quiet force on the bench. He rarely acts with emotion and is known as one of the smartest baseball minds in Melatia. He has many of the same on-field preferences as Hunt, but he gives the players more lee-way off of the field.

28 - Andrew Johnson - Hitting Coach - 46
A former .300 hitter in an independent barnstorming league, Johnson is a questionable choice due to his off-the-field actions, many of which are rumored to have been illegal. However, Hunt is confident in his ability to improve the hitting on the Melatian team. His major work is on contact and fundamentals, with power a distant third.

29 - Todd Teague - Pitching Coach - 56
Known for his work on fundamentals and control, Teague is the pitching guru on the Melatian team. He likes pitchers who work hard to improve their control, and values a good work ethic over raw talent. However, he is very confrontational and can get into arguments with players he dislikes or who do not follow his instructions.

30 - Jamie Hatman - Bullpen Coach - 38
Recently retired from baseball, Hatman is being groomed to succeed Teague as the next pitching coach. He is present in the bullpen during all games and works with relievers. He is the coach closest with the players, as he knew some of them in his playing days. However, he can be tough on young players, especially if they are brash or arrogant.

31 - Kenny Raines - First Base Coach - 31
A former prospect who had his career cut short by a freak injury, Raines is third on the chain of command and is Thomas' heir as bench coach. He was a very smart player and is good at preventing pickoffs and helping runners. He has a bad tendency to get signs wrong and this can lead to problems.

32 - Brad Garnard - Third Base Coach - 53
A long-time coach, Garnard was known as one of the best third-base coaches on the barnstorming circuit. He also has some experience as a manager and it is rumored that he is jealous of Hunt. They have a tenuous relationship. He is a smart coach and usually makes the right call on whether to send runners or not.

33 - Max Bryant - Baserunning Instructor - 49
A former ballplayer, Bryant was known as one of the smartest baserunners of his day, and regularly led the league in stolen base percentage. He is credited with helping to make Melatia one of the smartest baserunning teams. He teaches an aggressive baserunning style, which may lead to outs, but also leads to more runs. He also likes a lot of stolen bases. He has a good relationship with most players.

Starting Rotation

Number - Name - Age - Position - Height - Weight - Bats - Throws

9 - Troy Lee - 22 - SP - 6'6" - 186 - Right - Right
A cocky fireballer, Lee is the ace of the Melatian rotation. He wears his hair long and listens to rock music before games, but is an intimidating figure on the mound. His fastball is known to hit the upper 90s and he complements it with a deadly curve and an above-average sinker. He struggles with control and has been known to hit or walk batters and throw wild pitches.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (99 MPH), Changeup (78 MPH), Curveball (87 MPH), Sinker (93 MPH)

10 - Marcelino Grey - 26 - SP - 6'3" - 170 - Right - Left
A control pitcher, Grey doesn't blow hitters away with his fastball which tops out about 93 MPH. Instead he uses his accuracy and breaking pitches to get hitters out. He is a groundball pitcher and his breaking balls have more break on them than any other pitcher on the Melatian team.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (93 MPH), Changeup (73 MPH), 12-6 Curveball (84 MPH), Slider (82 MPH)

11 - Ned Alves - 29 - SP - 6'2" - 174 - Right - Right
Another control pitcher, Alves lives and dies by his screwball. On a good day, it can be deadly, but on a bad one, balls will be flying out of the park. Besides for that, he has a sub-par fastball and an above-average slurve. He is the only pitcher who throws a slurve on the Melatian team.
Pitches: 2-Seam Fastball (94 MPH), Changeup (70 MPH), Screwball (83 MPH), Slurve (80 MPH)

12 - Clímaco Bell - 33 - SP - 6'3" - 185 - Left - Right
A knuckleballer, Bell's bread-and-butter pitch used to be deadly. Now, he is fading and the pitch is losing its effectiveness. He has the tendency to get shelled and when one run comes in, more start pouring on. For this reason, Hunt usually has a quick trigger finger with Bell and will pull him at the first sign of trouble. He is one of the oldest players on the team.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (86 MPH), Changeup (70 MPH), Knuckleball (67 MPH)

Bullpen

Number - Name - Age - Position - Height - Weight - Bats - Throws

13 - Eberardo Lowry - 34 - CL - 6'7" - 175 - Right - Right
A long time closer on the barnstorming circuit, Lowry has the dirtiest cutter in Melatia. He is fading a little as he gets older, but continues to defy expectations and perform at a high level. Besides for his cutter he has an above-average fastball that tops out at 99 MPH and a mediocre changeup, but he throws his cutter most of the time.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (99 MPH), Changeup (74 MPH), Cutter (96 MPH)

14 - Dane Harper - 20 - SU - 6'6" - 173 - Right - Right
Another fireballer, Harper's main asset is his fastball, which regularly reaches triple digits. He intimidates hitters with this, which covers for his lack of good support pitches. He is good for an inning every other game, but gets tired easily.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (103 MPH), Changeup (79 MPH), Curveball (91 MPH)

15 - Inocencio Roscoe - 24 - SU - 6'2" - 163 - Left - Left
The second wheel to Harper, Roscoe is more durable, able to pitch multiple games in a row and multiple innings in a single outing. He has good stuff all-around, with no pitches especially standing out. He throws mostly breaking balls and fastballs, but he knows how to use his changeup to complement these pitches.
Pitches: 2-Seam Fastball (94 MPH), Changeup (76 MPH), Curveball (86 MPH), Slider (84 MPH)

16 - Frank Middlesworth - 28 - LS - 6'3" - 176 - Left - Left
The lefty-specialist on the team, Middlesworth is a quiet guy. He is very smart and prefers reading books to playing cards on team flights. He doesn't throw particularly hard, but his screwball is deadly against left-handers. He faces almost only lefties, occasionally facing a right-handed batter.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (95 MPH), Changeup (70 MPH), Screwball (82 MPH)

17 - Rafael Triggs - 26 - MR - 6'2" - 170 - Left - Left
Triggs, the third southpaw in the bullpen, pitches in the middle-to-late innings of close games. He racks up the most innings of anyone in the bullpen. He has an average fastball, but uses his slider to get outs. He is a groundball pitcher, and does not strike out many batters.
Pitches: 2-Seam Fastball (95 MPH), Changeup (73 MPH), Curveball (83 MPH), Slider (80 MPH)

18 - Caelan Beckett - 31 - MR - 5'10" - 160 - Right - Right
Beckett is the smallest pitcher on the team, and his size prevents him from reaching speeds over 93 MPH on his fastball. He was a borderline pick to make the team, and likely won't see much action. However, he rarely walks or hits batters and is efficient with his pitches.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (93 MPH), Changeup (72 MPH), Curveball (80 MPH), Slider (79 MPH)

19 - Jenaro Rudolph - 36 - LR - 6'1" - 190 - Right - Right
A former starter, Rudolph is the mop-up pitcher on the Melatian team. He still starts in barnstorming leagues, but his pitches don't make the cut on the national team. He is liable to get shelled, but knows how to place his pitches well. His repertoire of pitches is overall sub-par.
Pitches: 4-Seam Fastball (90 MPH), Changeup (70 MPH), Curveball (77 MPH), Slider (75 MPH)

Lineup

Spot in Lineup - Number - Name - Age - Position - Height - Weight - Bats - Throws

1. - 1 - Dillon Hunnisett - 24 - CF - 6'1" - 179 - S - R
Hunnisett is the fastest player on the Melatian team in terms of pure speed. He is a contact hitter and knows how to lay down a bunt for a hit. He is a very good fielder, but sometimes struggles with long throws and is liable to overthrow the cutoff man. His power is average, but he will sometimes hit a home run. He is a good four-tool player.
Tools: Average, Speed, Glove, Arm

2. - 2 - Ildefonso Bonney - 31 - SS - 5'9" - 158 - S - R
Bonney, one of the veterans on the team, is a solid contact hitter. He doesn't have much pop, but he is good at moving runners along with a sacrifice bunt or providing a clutch grounder into the hole. He is very fast but slowing, but he makes up for it with his game instincts, which are possibly the best on the team. He is a good fielder and has great intangibles. It is rumored that he plans to go into coaching after retiring.
Tools: Average, Speed, Glove, Arm

3. - 3 - Nazario Snyder - 27 - 3B - 6'2" - 185 - L - R
One of the best power hitters on the team, Snyder can also hit for average and is one of the best fielders on the team. He has a superb range and his powerful arm make almost no throw out of his reach. He can be a liability on the base paths, but he makes up for it with his other tools.
Tools: Average, Power, Glove, Arm

4. - 4 - James Baker - 28 - 1B - 6'4" - 210 - S - R
The only true power hitter on the squad, Baker is almost as big as the bombs he hits, which gives him the nickname "The Big Bomber". He is an awful fielder and is the slowest player on the team, making him a truly one-dimensional player. Almost 50% of his at-bats are homeruns, walks, or strikeouts. Hunt doesn't like to keep him around, but rumor is that Rogerson himself forced Hunt to put him on the team.
Tools: Power

5. - 5 - Nich Rier - 27 - RF - 6'2" - 184 - R - R
The best pure thrower on the team, Rier has an absolute cannon for an arm. He is a pretty good hitter as well, but he rarely hits home runs. He has medium speed and average range in the outfield, but his arm makes up for it. Hunt may move Rier down in the lineup later in the tournament, depending on how he hits.
Tools: Average, Glove, Arm

6. - 6 - Roger Dennel - 31 - LF - 5'11" - 168 - S - L
A solid player all-around, Dennel is known best for his stolen bases. He is not quite as fast as Hunnisett, but he steals even more bases thanks to his quick jumps and good timing. He is one of Hunt's favorite players on the team, thanks to his hustle. He is an above-average fielder and has a solid arm. He doesn't hit for much power.
Tools: Average, Speed, Glove, Arm

7. - 7 - Joaquin Perkins - 29 - C - 6'0" - 194 - R - R
A great defensive player, Perkins is a weak hitter and slow as a rock on the basepaths. However, he throws almost 60% of stealing runners out with his rocket of an arm and knows how to catch a ballgame. He has a close relationship with most of the pitching staff. He has a little pop in his bat, but not much.
Tools: Glove, Arm

8. - 8 - Phillip Winston - 25 - 2B - 5'7" - 160 - R - R
Another great defensive player, Winston is a weak hitter, like Perkins. He is extremely fast and is good at bunting, but hits very few homeruns. He is a smart player and knows most of the opposing hitters inside and out from the scouting reports he reads before every game.
Tools: Speed, Glove, Arm

Bench

Number - Name - Age - Position - Height - Weight - Bats - Throws

20 - Marty Andrews - 23 - C - 5'11" - 180 - R - R
A catcher in the mode of Perkins, Andrews is a weak hitter with slow feet. He is not as good of a defensive player as Perkins, but many believe that he will grow into a solid contact hitter. His throwing arm is sub-par and he needs to work on calling a good game before Hunt would even think about starting him.
Tools: Glove

21 - Grant Key - 24 - 1B - 6'0" - 170 - S - L
Key plays the same position as Butler, but is a completely different player. He is a contact hitter with a little power, but is much faster than Butler and has an above-average glove. Many hope he can develop into a five-tool player to replace Butler, especially Hunt, who admires Key's work ethic and wants an excuse to take Butler out of the lineup. In games with a DH, Key usually plays first and bats ninth, while Butler DHs in the cleanup spot.
Tools: Contact, Speed, Glove, Arm

22 - Cory Rake - 20 - 3B - 5'11" - 184 - L - R
A contact hitter, Rake is seen as the replacement to Snyder at the hot corner. His hitting is advanced for a 20-year old and he has the capacity to add power to his tools. He has average speed and good range. This is complemented by a powerful arm, however, it is often wild and he gets a lot of errors. Hunt wants him to clean this part of his game up before joining the starting lineup.
Tools: Contact, Glove, Arm

23 - Doug Trujillo - 25 - UT - 6'0" - 165 - S - R
The jack-of-all-trades on the team, Trujillo plays every position except pitcher and catcher. He is pretty fast and a very good fielder, but has a weak bat. Hunt relies on him as a defensive substitution and as a super reserve all around the field.
Tools: Speed, Glove, Arm

24 - Ashton Cantrell - 18 - CF - 6'2" - 176 - S - R
The best prospect on the team, Cantrell is almost as fast as Hunnisett and possible an even better fielder. His arm is among the best in the team and his batting eye is fit for a player beyond his age. He needs to work on his patience at the plate, but his strong build promises of power, making him a truly five-tool prospect.
Tools: Contact, Power, Speed, Glove, Arm

25 - Melvyn Moreno - 33 - OF - 6'0" - 170 - R - R
A utility outfielder, Moreno plays both corners of the outfield. He is a weak hitter and slow on the basepaths, but is intelligent when playing and a good fielder. He is mostly a replacement on rest days for Dennel and Rier and doesn't usually start in important games.
Tools: Glove, Arm

Stadium

Name - City - Opened - Capacity - Surface - LF Line - LF - LCF - CF - RCF - RF - RF Line

Ruskin Field - Aladon - 146 MC - 54,000 - Bluegrass - 350' - 380' - 404' - 455' - 395' - 370' - 330'
Ruskin Field, opened four years ago in 146 MC, is the home stadium of the Melatian national baseball team. It seats 54,000, including 2,000 in the 100 luxury boxes in the stadium. In center field there is a park that includes a waterfall and statues of famous Melatian players. The outfield is extremely deep, with centerfield 455 feet back, making it hard to hit homeruns. The stadium was purposefully built this way to suit the playing style of the Melatian team. Right-field was also intentionally built shorter than left-field to suit the classic Melatian power hitter, who is usually left-handed or a switch-hitter. The stadium was designed by the Mondy Stadium Architechture Firm, which has designed many other stadiums in Melatia. Food and souvenir stands are scattered all over the stadium and patrons seated in the luxury boxes, box seats, club seats, and ground-level sections are offered to-the-seat service from restaurants located inside the stadium. Security is very heavy and any rowdy fans will be swiftly ejected from the stadium. Alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs are banned inside the stadium, and any fans found with them will be swiftly ejected. Fans are subject to a special stadium tax, which adds an additional 5% to the tax rate of any goods purchased inside the stadium.

The Prospect: Part 1

"Tweet." The whistle blew. "Alright, line up for attendance." A thin, older-looking man with a clipboard came down the line. Ashton stood in line with the others while the names were read off. "Moreno, Garcia, Hernandez, Jeholon." After each name a grunt of confirmation followed, some low-pitched, sone even lower. "Cantrell." "Here," Ashton said. The other players laughed at his voice, higher than others. He was, after all, only 18 years old, and surrounded by men in their 20s and 30s. The coach looked at him strangely and then moved on down the line. "Faherty, Enzo, Hanley." Ashton stood in the line awkwardly, watching the coach. He finally reached the end of the line and a new man stepped up, a clean-cut man in his 40s, just past the prime of his youth. "Alright, pitchers and catchers on Field A, infielders on Field B, outfielders on Field C." Ashton followed along in the wave of outfielders moving towards Field C. "Hello," said a voice. Ashton wheeled around to find a man with a goatee and short hair. "Hello," said Ashton, wondering what this guy wanted with him. "I'm Dylan Clark," the man said. "I'm Ashton Cantrell," replied Ashton, warming up a little. "I'm here for the national team tryout." "You're a little young to be playing with the big boys, no?" said Clark. He looked at Ashton with a smile. "I'm just joking. It's a new experience for all of us. This is the first time a team like this is being put together. Did you know that over 300 ballplayers are trying out for the team?" "No, I didn't," gasped Ashton, astonished. Secretly, he though, "There goes my chance of making the team." Reading Ashton's expression, Clark said, "Don't worry. If you don't make it this time, you've still got a career ahead of you." They reached the ballfield, Field C as it was called. It was part of the Ocean Training Complex recently built for the baseball team. The field had seats for 500 and today it was partially occupied by scouts, executives, and coaches. Ashton gulped. He'd played under big crowds before, but not with pressure like this. "Alrighty boys." An outfield instructor came over. "We're gonna start off over here with some flyballs, then we'll do some throwing, and end up with some baserunning." Somebody groaned at this. "Hey!" the coach said. "Next time somebody complains there'll be laps. Now get in some lines!" The prospective outfielders lined up in 5 lines, each 12 players deep. Ashton was sixth or so. He watched the coaches hit fly-balls. "Crack," the bat would go and the white sphere would fly up in the air, towards the waiting glove of the fielder. "Crack." "Crack." "Hey kid, are you gonna go?" Ashton looked back in the direction of the voice to see 11 annoyed faces. It was his turn. "Uh, yes, sorry." He stepped up and watched the ball fly off of the bat, just like it was a pickup game in the sandlot near his house. But this wasn't just a pickup game, meaningless except for bragging rights. This was the real deal. Ashton read the ball quickly and jumped off to intersect it. "Thud." He reached his hand out and closed his glove on the ball. He threw it back to the coach and jogged back to the end of the line, happy that he had caught it. Nothing would have been more embarrassing than missing the first ball on the first day of practice. Deep in his thoughts, he didn't see the ball, overhit, flying towards him. The other players jumped out of the way, but Ashton stood there. The ball flew closer and closer and the white dot in Ashton's eye grew bigger and bigger.

"Urrgh." Ashton blinked as light flooded into the room. It seemed like just an ordinary day for the teenager. His mom had left for work already and his brother was off in the streets. He looked out of the window into the solitary street. Dirty, polluted, and empty. Except today it wasn't. He saw the van, parked outside. Black, with tinted windows, it sat there, the only car on the street. "What is a van doing here," he wondered. "Crash." "What's that," he wondered. He put on shorts and looked outside his door into the darkened living room. A light was on and in it, he could see a man, dressed in all black with a black ski mask, picking through the possessions in the room. In one hand, he held a television, and in the other, he held a bag. "Hey!" Ashton said, raising his voice. The man pulled out a gun. "Stop it!" Ashton said. He ran towards the man and slid just as the gun fired. The bullet flew into the wall behind him. He kept sliding, closer and closer as the man's feet grew into focus. "Thud." Ashton's legs connected with the thief's feet and he thudded to the floor. Ashton struggled up as the man attempted to reload the gun. Ashton jumped just as the man cocked the gun. He crashed to the floor and he fell on top of the gun. He looked into the thief's wide eyes and heard the gun jam. "Click, click." Ashton pulled back his fist and hit the robber square in the face. Blood spurted from his nose and it sat on his face, mangled and twisted. The man grabbed his face and stood up. He sprinted out of the door and into the van. As the van sped off fown the street, Ashton picked up the gun. Slowly, he inspected it, looking at the black weapon that had come so close to ending his life. Then, he opened the chamber and took out the remaining bullet, pocketing them before he threw the gun into the dumpster behind his house.

Ashton slowly opened his eyes. He looked up at the player staring at him, crowding around him. "Get a doctor!" someone yelled. His hand flew to the necklace around his neck, upon which a 9mm bullet hung. He felt it and then slowly tried to get up. Pain shot through his head and he laid back down with a groan. A coach rushed up to his side, followed by a man wearing a shirt that said "Medical Staff." "Give him room," said the coach, as the other man knelt down by Ashton's side. "What happened to you?" he said. "I, I, I don't know." stammered Ashton, confused. One minute he had been waiting in line, and the next, he was lying on the ground, his head on fire. The man took out a small flashlight and shined it into Ashton's eyes. Ashton blinked. Again, he tried to get up. "Lie down," the man ordered. He talked into a walkie-talkie he held in his left hand. "Get a stretcher over here." The field slowly faded into darkness as Ashton's eyelids drooped, and then closed.

New-Look Silver Wolves Return to the WBC With Past Experiences at Heart

The last time the Silver Wolves were in a World Baseball Classic, they rode an eight-game winning streak into their first ever final. Then Toya Kaneda launched a two-run walkoff home run to take the first game of the best-of-five. Sakurakoku was on cloud nine - it looked like nothing could stop them.

Then the Wolves' bats, which had achieved a .293 average and driven in 80 runs, fell silent in Game 2 as Zwangzug starter Odilon Lievre shut them out. The defense and bullpen followed suit in Game 3, allowing five runs and committing three errors to lose that game as well. Rumors seeped out that the mood in the clubhouse had gone south, that frustration was simmering under the surface. It didn't seem like that for Game 4, a game where the momentum swung as wildly as the bats that sent balls screaming towards the gaps. The pendulum came to a rest in the Zebras' favor, finally, in the eight when Hideki Miura had a game-tying two-run home run robbed by a leaping Kelsey Yarowicz. When the final out was made and Zwangzug celebrated, the Wolves were of course disappointed, but there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere in the losing dugout and later in their locker room. Even having missed out on a chance at a championship, the mood was far more upbeat than the previous rumors had suggested. They could weather storms and come out better for it.

It was a lesson that the whole nation would develop for itself just seven months later.

The Akemitani Incident sent reverberations throughout the Sakuran islands. The images of humanitarian assistance being delivered and handed out to residents in the area, the questions that arose over the nature of the disappearance of an entire city, the sometimes sharp debates over who was responsible for the shortcomings that the months after revealed - all those are well documented. In the midst of that, sports was decidedly a secondary concern, and the emergency situation that Akemitani spurred led to the withdrawl of Sakurakoku's team from the 22nd WBC. By the time the situation in what used to be Akemitani was settled, several of the players that had become core members of the Silver Wolves since their first appearance at the 16th edition had retired. For others, they were displaced by a new batch of rising players, eager to become the next generation.

Of the 25 players that participated in the final at Montbenoit, only 13 have returned, a huge turnover for a team which up to now only saw two or three new players at each tournament. At this sixth tournament that the Wolves have participated in, six players have been with the Wolves since the beginning - of those, all except Satoshi Takeda are pitchers. With those veterans providing leadership, this team that will see Sakurakoku's return to international play will be young and eager to continue the rise that had been interrupted, and capture that goal that had been just a little bit out of their predecessors' grasp.
