Games of the VII Olympiad - OOC Thread

Welcome to the sign-up thread for the Games of the Seventh Olympiad, hosted in Emberton, the capital of Krytenia.

How to sign-up
Copy and paste the list of events which is at the bottom of this post. Under each event name, just add the names of the athletes that you wish to participate in that event . Of course, if you don’t wish to have athletes participating in a specific event, just remove the event from your final list. The maximum number of competitors is specified in parentheses after each event, you can send less athletes than the number in parentheses, but not more.

When making your sign-up list, there are events that ask just for “teams” without specifying the number of athletes, such as Handball. On those, you need not write the names of the athletes in the sign-up list, just put the skill modifier of the team. There will be a roster thread created nearer the Opening Ceremony for you to add the names of players of team sports and add any other IC information that you find useful, as the flag-bearer, anthem and other stuff that aren’t part of the sign-up process. For all other events, including those which involve teams with a specified number of athletes, you have to add names. You can also add your nation’s three letter code in your sign-up thread, but I’ll create one for you if you don't.

Please do not "tag" this thread or add a "provisional sign-up"; these posts will be ignored, even if you later edit in a full signup. I also request that you do not edit your original signup once it is made, as changes are likely to be missed. Instead, let me know the changes in a new post, as I intend to update the signup list as I go along. I will pop in a post telling you when I'm about to update signups.

Entries and limits
The limit of entries for the Games of the Seventh Olympiad is of 400 entries per nation. If you have entered the Games before, you will notice that this is lower than previous Games. An entry consists of a team or individual participating in one event. An athlete who participates in 3 events will be counted as three entries, at the same way a full team participating in a single event is counted as one entry. Puppets nations are allowed, but with the limit of one, and please state its master nation. In addition, puppet nations will have a lower entry limit of 250 entries. Combined entries count as a single nation.

Skill modifiers
You can put the skill modifier of your athletes, by adding a number (it must be just after the name of your athlete or team, and preferably in parenthesies. Please turn smilies off when you post, or any numbers ending in an 8 may end up as a guy wearing shades). The skill modifiers are from 0 to 100, from the lowest to highest. 0 probably means the athlete (or team) was called (or organized) without having any proper training or preparation; imagine them as an Eric the Eel. A 100 means that the player is part of an elite group of athletes for the event. So, you can input any number between 0 and 100 - whole numbers only please, 37 is OK but 44.6 is not. Skill modifiers refer to a single entry, and not to a person or a sport. This means that a full Hockey team, for example, has a single skill modifier, at the same time that an athlete competing in multiple events can have one different modifier for each event.

Please also note the following: the average of all the skill modifiers in your delegation cannot be more than 50, although it can be lower than it. Any list in which the average of skill modifiers end being higher than 50 will have its skill modifiers reduced until it meets the 50 limit. And, finally, entries without a skill modifier will have it set to a default modifier of 50.

Deadline and Schedule
Sign-ups are open in this thread until 23:00 GMT/UTC on Tuesday June 12, 2012. Please post your delegations before this date. Sign-ups posted after this deadline almost certainly will not be accepted.

The RP thread will be created around one week before the end of sign-ups - that is to say, June 5 or thereabouts.

The Games will begin on Tuesday June 19, with preliminaries in the football, archery, and artistic gymnastic events. The actual Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday June 22, and the full official schedule will follow nearer the time.

Demonstration events
Demonstration events will be held if there are enough competitors and a suitable person and method to scorinate. If you want to nominate one, follow these rules.

No winter sports. We have the Winter Olympics for that

A list of events within the sport. This may involve a split into men’s and women’s events, a series of distances, or whatever similar categorization is relevant to the sport. Some or all of these events may be consolidated if interest levels are not sufficient to sustain every possible event; you should specify if there are any events that are sufficiently dissimilar that their entrants cannot be funneled into a single event.

A set of results for the sport that can be used to set up the scorinator for it. If the sport is fictitious, either a set of fictitious results will be needed, or a statement that the results are similar enough to some other sport that the same scorination parameters can be used. If results differ for each event within the sport, this requirement must be satisfied for each event. Or, even better, an easily comprehensible and complete process for generating scores for the events.

A brief explanation of the competition format that should be used. This can take the form of a reference to a real-life competition (a link to information should be provided unless the format follows that of an Olympic event), or a detailed explanation if the sport requires some unique format.

The maximum number of individuals or teams that each nation can enter in each event, and, for team events, the size of the team (be reasonable in this one – preferably a max of 3 entries per event).

Who will be scorinating the event, and what credentials they have for doing so. I will not be scorinating any demonstration events myself.

A list of all demonstration sports that have been adequately specified will be kept at the end of this post for convenience, though it may not always be updated. You can (and should) enter athletes in demonstration events at any time, regardless of whether the event has been officially noted or confirmed—the entries will simply be disregarded if the event is not held. In principle, demonstration events adequately specified will be held if at least six nations have entered, and will not count towards your maximum entries.

Example signup
Of course, you don’t need to post exactly this way, but this is a good example:

Men’s 100 m Butterfly [2]
Alan Smith (27)
James Jones (16)
Men’s 4×200 m Freestyle Relay [1 team of 4]
Alan Smith / James Jones / David Taylor / John Williams (89)
Women’s 400 m Individual Medley [2]
Louise Davis (100)
Women’s 4×100 m Freestyle Relay [1 team of 4]
Louise Davis / Lisa Bennett / Paula Mason / Jennifer Harris (27)

WATER POLO
Men’s [1 team]
Men's Water Polo Team (71)
Women’s [1 team]
Women's Water Polo Team (50)

CANOEING
FLATWATER
Men’s C-1 200 m [1]
Terry Novak (30)
Men’s C-2 200 m [1 team of 2]
Terry Novak / Ian Wilson (40)

In this example you can notice the basic rules: each line in it represents one entry, as it represents one participant person or team in an event. Skill modifiers are the numbers in parenthesis after the names, and the average of all these entries is 50.

Notice also that in Water Polo the names of the players aren’t specified, as these are input in the roster thread. But, at the same time, the names of the swimming relay teams are. This is because the Water Polo events don’t specify a number of athletes per team, while the relay events do.

UPDATE POINT #1

Bloodbath Generation: Your 42 entries currently add up to 2317 points; an average of 55.17. Please amend your entries in a new post.

Thatius: You only specified one competitor in the Women's C2 500m and C2 slalom canoeing events; these should both have two to a boat. If you could also let me know which member of your men's and women's rowing eights is the cox, that would be a great help. Please pop this in a new post.

Talk about first spending half an hour coming up with what events to compete in, then coming up with names which took me an hour, and another 15 min for formatting the post... x_x

Just to check: I'm not allowed to add athletes? And I have to make a new post just for my Genral Info? Or can I just edit the part I made in my sign-up?

You can add athletes, or change athletes, and your general info goes in the Roster thread when it goes up. Any changes, though, need to be in a new post so I can see what the changes are, thus creating a lot less work for me.

You'll need to edit again; the average needs to be no more than 50. Just go ahead and edit that last post, I'm not updating you yet. (Or Deandean, for that matter.)

I am, however, updating Ko-oren, so if they want to make changes, it'll need to be in a new post.

EDIT: And Ko-oren will need to make changes. The following are not team events, and will need athletes specified:
  • Swimming - Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay (4 athletes)
  • Swimming - Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay (4 athletes)
  • Swimming - Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay (4 athletes)
  • Badminton - Men's Doubles (2 athletes)
  • Badminton - Women's Doubles (2 athletes)
  • Rowing - Men's Double Sculls (2 athletes)
  • Tennis - Men's Doubles (2 athletes)
  • Tennis - Women's Doubles (2 athletes)
  • Tennis - Mixed Doubles (2 athletes)
  • Volleyball - Men's Beach Volleyball (2 athletes per team)
  • Volleyball - Men's Beach Volleyball (2 athletes per team)

In addition, the archery team events are automatically entered if you have three archers in the individual; you do not need to count them as entries or give them a skill modifier.

Finally, I request that you repost the entire signup with one entry per line, as the signup as it is now is nigh on to unreadable. Thanks.

EDITEDIT: Thanks, Thatius. All sorted now.

*Definately double check my entry. Sorry. :( I am super busy this time of year with the end of school and finals, so I have like no time to check/modify my roster. Essentially what I did was copy and paste my roster but cut out the extra groups that put my roster over 400. Hopefully the math remains the same for averages!

The Babbage Islands offer to run one demonstration sport at these Olympics should the organisers approve and the nations of the world enter.

Community football is a code of nine-a-side football developed by a coalition of nations. It is most closely related to the rugby codes, but community football is a limited-contact game on a circular pitch that permits passing in all directions and has no equivalent to the try.

The link in my signature references the rules in use for the most recent competition. Scorination would be provided through the same custom xkoranate file developed by me for that competition.

There would be one team event, open to all without regard to gender. A conventional group stage plus knockouts format is envisioned.

TBI also confirm puppet-mastery of the entry to be posted by Green Jello Salad on behalf of The Scout Promise Consolidated Olympic Organizing Committee, representing the programmes of 14 nations under one regional banner.

As this will (most likely) double as the OOC thread for the Games eventually, this is as good a place as any to ask: in the hypothetical situation of a new nation to the Olympics requesting a country code that has historically been used by an established nation and that nation is likely to sign up as well, how will you allocate the codes, Kry? If the established nation doesn't sign up it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but if (a) it does; or (b) the established nation had significant contributions to NS Sport [e.g. an Ariddia compared to a Newmanistan]? (This is a hypothetical.)
