Postby Aels » Thu Mar 15, 2012 2:07 pm

Stadia

As its name suggests, it is a rugby-specific stadium, although it is often converted to host league football in Aels. Its regular capacity is 8,000, but 5,000 temporary seats have been added. It is the smallest stadium in use at this World Cup. Will also host Ro16 Match 1 and Quarterfinal 1.

Pool B matches are played at the rugby-specific Trechoid Park, capacity 14,151, located in Trechoid along the Aels–Ancharmunn border. Will also host Ro16 Match 2.

Pool C matches are being played at the 16,744-capacity Island Arena, on the island of Llanislwyn in Pwentshore, Aels. It is a rugby-specific stadium, although it is primarily used for union instead of league. Will also host Ro16 Match 3 and Quarterfinal 2.

Pool D matches are being held at the largest Aelsh stadium — the Free Stone Stadium, which is Aels' national football stadium, in the capital Drayfill. It has a capacity of 19,000, although 3,500 extra seats have been temporarily erected to bring its capacity up to 22,500. Will also host Ro16 Match 4, Semifinal 1, and the third-place playoff.

Pool E matches will be played at Longlun Park in the Ancharmunn capital Ballyfeeaknock, which has a capacity of 20,000. It is a rugby league-specific stadium. Will also host Ro16 Match 5 and Quarterfinal 3.

Pool F matches are played at Grulashawn Park, capacity 21,562. Located in Rimsyleanus, Ancharmunn, it is the largest rugby-specific stadium that will host matches at this World Cup. Will also host Ro16 Match 6 and Quarterfinal 4.

Pool G matches are to be played at a converted Avongarran, capacity 28,000, located in Caernankry, Ancharmunn. Its primary use is as a Gaelic sports stadium, but 4,000 seats from its regular capacity of 32,000 have temporarily been taken out of use for the competition. Will also host Ro16 Match 7 and Semifinal 2.

Pool H matches will be played at a converted MacGillycuddy Park, the Ancharmunn national GAA stadium in Ballyfeeaknock. At a capacity of 53,593, it is the largest stadium that will host matches at this World Cup. Will also host Ro16 Match 8 and the final.

Brodskopolis "Maccabi"
Representatives of the Brodskopolitan Rugby League at RLWC X

Head Coach: Shimshon Rothschild
Assistants: Gilad Silberblatt, Moshe Rosen, Shmuel Gusky
Style: +5 (heavily attacking)

Although not as popular as rugby union, rugby league has been steadily increasing in popularity in Brodskopolis in recent years, with last season being a banner one for the sport, as, for the first time in the nation's history, all 16 teams in the BRL sold over 2 million tickets for the year. Similar to their compatriots in most other sports, Brodskopolitan rugby league players tend to focus on entertaining their fans and racking up high scores rather than on technical proficiency, and this is reflected in the squad put together by Shimshon Rothschild, the head coach of last year's league champions, the Richteriyah Rabbits.

Starting XIII:
Backs:
1-Dov Sussman (Balanjar)
2-Alhaji Ezeilo (Enugu)

12-Mischa Goldszmit (Sheynfeld)

The Federation of Polar Islandstates Rugby League Team

Rugby league is by some way the smaller of the two main rugby disciplines played in the Federation - the newly formed national league isn't far out of its infancy really - but the fans are keen, and the players passionate, and following an encouraging showing at the last tournament, they will be looking to make good progress here. Players are predominantly chosen from the strongest states at it in the nation, with the state of Landt Sibir dominating. Though for those who RP a domestic league championship, all of these players are in the shop window should you be interested.

Style Mod: +5
Long drawn out tactical grinds are for Union, players in the Federation that opted for League have done because they love to attack.

On the streets of Drayfill:

"Have you read this? They've got kangaroos loose in the top paddock, I tell ya."

"What's it say, mate?"

"It's about the tournament. 'International debutants Waltzing Matilda and Ajaundar will battle for the cellar in Drayfill.' Hell, we play 38 international matches a bleedin' year in Super 20."

"Yeah, well, I think they're talkin' about the national thirteen."

"Yeah? Well, I think they've been crackin' onto too many deb-you-tahnts and don't know a football from a brown-eyed mullet!"

"They did move it all here pretty fast, some of the arrangements are gonna be bodgy."

"I could do with a pint about now."

"Your shout."

Chetkosk Rugby League National Squad

Home/Away Kits

Nickname = The Antlers
Style Modifier = +4.0

Previously in NationStates...
In their first foray into international Rugby League, Chetkosk entered unranked and unnoticed by the world. Through outstanding efforts on the pitch (and off it, for Rugby veteran and manager Kiril Bushkov, although we're not allowed to talk about that escapade...) the Antlers reached the final against the odds, and were finally vanquished by the hosts, Virabia. Second time round was far less prestigious, only managing to emerge from the group stage and no further. Third time's the charm, as they say, or at least the Antlers intend on making it so.

Look out for:
Andrey Simplicevic, star player and vice captain.
Aslan Kamensky, captain and part-time underwear model.
Ilya Lavrentiev, mountain of a man, though daily reminded of his 16th of an inch shortfall compared to Bushkov.
Evgeny Prishchepenko, fastest wing in the country
and finally...

Kiril Bushkov, manager and spy-evader extraordinaire.

Manager: Kiril Bushkov

A press release from the Brodskopolitan Ministry of Sport
Today the Maccabi experienced humiliation at Imeall an Uisce. Although the traditionally porous defense yielded only two tries, and the subsequent conversions, the high-octane offense many had been expected failed to materialize, with only a penalty kick from Otto Berliner staving off a shutout. Although league is not as popular as union in our great nation, this was the Maccabi's first international match, and the Maccabi were facing Saugeais, the group's seeded team, the fans had expected better, and one can only hope that we see that in our next match, against New Sydney. Zog Nit Keynmol! Go Maccabi!

Saugeais Sports Briefs
Ruggers open up League World Cup with a win

For the fan, a win is a win. For head coach Josef Nevezski, it was "piss poor, and full of mistakes." Make no mistake, though, a 12-2 win over newcomers Brodskopolis at the National Rugby Stadium puts the Hawks out in an early lead, but it was apparent the team needed to find their stride soon or they would be eliminated in the next round. "Our tackling was sloppy, our movement was dreadfull," said Nevezski. "I should be happy for the win, but when you look at all the mistakes we had, they overshadow the good. Or two tries came on 30 meter runs, but if we got down to with 5 meters of the try line, we couldn't score. Tell me, how does that make sense? We need to finish drives like that once we get close."

The two Saugeais runs in question were both taken by forward Dion Appleton, who plays for the local Metalton Miners, both in the first half of play. Bouncing out of tackles, he managed to elude the rest of those giving chase, placing the first try right underneath the goal post in the 20th minute. The second try was not without some difficulty, as Appleton stumbled and nearly fell twice on his way to a try along the edge of the field in the 33rd minute. Slavomír Lohrenz took both conversion kicks, making the first one with ease, while the second bounced off the upright and through, giving Saugeais a 12-0 lead at the half. The Hawks barely moved the ball in the second half, as Brodskopolis managed to get two points back off of drop kicks.

Saugeais will face off against the hosts, Aels, in the next match as they look to build both momentum and points within their group.

On the streets of Drayfill:

"One-for-two, could be worse."

"Could be better, too, the blokes are playing well. Damn near scuttled Kulverint, they're sound."

"Low scores so far."

"Aye. Can't make out why, perhaps defence is better in the world game?"

"Let's hope Darmen's lads have an off day, we could use some more points."

"Too right. Nine and thirteen, not a lot. Four tries, and we kicked the conversions for a change against Ajaundar. Two drop goals, one per match."

"Stephen Marshall's having a tournament. Playing like a third half back. Did you see the try he scored against Kulverint?"

"Did I? Magnificent finish. Old man Butler made it happen."

It was a match that the punditry were describing as a must-win for the Maccabi. They had already lost to Saugeais, Group A's seeded team, and would soon be going up against hosts Aels at their National Rugby Stadium. Without a victory against New Sydney, Brodskopolitan hopes of advancing in the tournament would be dashed. Fortunately, the boys in blue came through, with a 27-8 win.
The match began with a bang, as left wing Christian Thomas, the only Yoruba on a team dominated by Ashkenazis, ran back the opening kick for a try, without even having to exchange a pass with a team-mate. This was followed by scrum half Otto Berliner's successful conversion.
New Sydney were able to score a try of their own, and then tie the game after the subsequent conversion, but right wing Alhaji Ezeilo and hooker Ilan Greenbaum struck back quickly with tries of their own, and Berliner's conversion put the score at 18-6 at the half.
A pair of New Sydney drop-goals trimmed the score to 18-8, but Berliner then kicked three to give the Maccabi a 21-8 lead with ten minutes left.
It was in the 76th minute when the Maccabi executed a passing move that will go down in Brodskopolitan history as one of the most beautiful plays for any of the nation's sports teams, as Sussman to Herzl to Freund to Defaz to Ezeilo to Mabovitch to Landshuth to Greenbaum conveyed the ball downfield, before the 240-lb. prop Michayeil Feldstein finally dived over the line for a try. The substitute scrum half Noach Hershlag converted, and that was the game.
I yam what I yam, and I yam someone who loves sweet potatoes.

Where is home?

It's a question that's often been asked of rugby league. The origins of the sport aren't entirely clear, though having founded and hosted the first Rugby League World Cup, Sorthern Northland was often considered the home of rugby league. A rumoured Sorthern bid to host the tenth edition of the tournament was expected to play heavily on such status. However with the implosion of that nation the bid was never forthcoming and rugby league was left without it's self proclaimed home.

Off the west coast of Ancharmunn lies Na Hoileáin Órga, a chain of islands stretching across the Bay of Ancharmunn. Evidence suggests population of the islands has existed for millennia, a longer time span than it has on the Ancharmunn mainland. One of the most distinguishing features of this ancient population is a sport with striking similarities to rugby. Developed over the into a code that all but matches rugby league many islanders contend that they are the true home of rugby league.

Indeed, the islands are considered the spiritual home of the sport in Ancharmunn, despite An Hoileánaigh, the club of the islands, having finished no higher than 2nd in the national league. In the Origin matches islanders make up the majority of players for the Island and South side. Young players are often recommended to head to the isles to learn the game. As far as heartlands of the sport, Na Hoileáin Órga is very much the heartland of Charmunnry rugby league.

Yet the Rugby League World Cup, currently being co-hosted in Ancharmunn, and none of the games being held in the islands many feel that the islands place in rugby league isn't being acknowledged. Ask rugby league fans in Ancharmunn and the view in omnipresent, Na Hoileáin Órga should be hosting part of the tournament.

They aren't though, and neither is Sorthern Northland. Wherever rugby league's home is, for many it isn't to be found at the World Cup.
I'm not on the Greenwich Meridian so my time is a few seconds behind. Bear that in mind.

It was, quite simply, a must-win for Brodskopolis. Saugeais, Pool A's seeded team, had already assured themselves of a spot in the knockout rounds, and New Sydney had already been eliminated. Brodskopolis's hopes of advancement were based on beating hosts Aels in front of a capacity crowd at their National Rugby Stadium in Imeall an Uisce. It was, to say the least, not going to be easiest match in the minuscule history of the Maccabi, who, aside from regional tournaments, had never before competed on the international stage.
The hosts, motivated both by a desire to advance and their loud and patriotic fans, quickly got an early lead, as three drop-kicks and a penalty netted them a 5-0 lead. Although Berliner was able to nail three drop-kicks of his own, the Maccabi were nonetheless down 5-3 at half-time.
But whatever Coach Rothschild said to the boys in blue paid off, as winger Alhaji Ezeilo scored a try early in the second half which, when coupled with Berliner's conversion, gave the Maccabi a 9-5 lead, one which they would not relinquish.
That is not to say, however, that it would be easy after this as, in the 66th minute, Aels launched an incredible breakaway, which looked certain to give them the lead, when they were suddenly stopped thanks to an incredible tackle by Mischa Goldszmit, the Sheynfeld second-row forward. A counter-attack ensued, culminating with a try from a rather surprising source, the substitute stand-off, Or Jonas. Berliner converted, a great defensive effort held off Aels for 13 minutes, and the 15-5 miracle was completed.
I yam what I yam, and I yam someone who loves sweet potatoes.

Hawks amass 3 match win streak, problem with offense

The Hawks Rugby League team seems to have nothing going against it. They are 3-0-0 in their group, and have shutout two of those three opponents; obviously, their defense is working just fine. The problem that is very apparent in the lack of points they are putting on the board. The Hawks are so desperately trying for tries, when they could be settling for drop goals if they can't cross the line. "It's something that I told the players," said head coach Josef Nevezski. "First and foremost, go for the try. If you can't get the try, go somewhere else. The players haven't been looking to their other options, they are stuck on the 'score tries' mode, which while a ood mode to be in, it's not getting us anywhere if we can't."

The Hawks took down the hosts, Aels, by the score of 14-0. Second rowman Farrell Scrivenor scored he first try in the 23rd minute, after long battle in front of Aels' try zone. A long lateral from the pack down the row of Hawks players found Scrivenor, and with help from Kees Kools, managed to dive into the endzone for the try. The second try came in the 55th minute, after a spectacular breakaway from Dion Appleton. After a scrum, the ball was flicked to the flanks, where Dion just took off like a rocket. Only one defenders caught up to him, but Dion stiff armed the tackle as he made it into the endzone and had time to down the ball near the posts. Ludwig Harden converted both of those tries, as well as two free standing drop kicks goals in the second half to round out the Saugeais scoring.

In the third match, a 10-0 victory against New Sydney, Saugeais suffered an injury to one of their starters. In the 44th minute, prop Kiaran Vesely had his legs taken out from underneath on a tackle, leading to a yellow carding of the New Sydney tackler. Vesely was holding his left leg, looking slightly disfigured and swollen, wincing with pain. The medical staff loaded him on a stretcher and took him to the hospital, where X-rays were positive for a fractured tibia. Witold Niemczyk took his place in the match, and will do so for the remainder of the tournament. Meanwhile back on the pitch, Saugeais regrouped from the injury and led a charge down to the New Sydney endzone, where Dion Appleton from 5 meters out slinked through two defenders and dove across the line to dodge a third for the try; Ludwig Harden converted. Near the end of the match, Saugeais got the ball deep in their area, and with a long run by Appleton, got the ball down the New Sydney 20 meter area. After some short runs and scrums, the Hawks broke free with a run down to around the try line. With the final whistle looming, the Hawks had time for a couple more runs. Trying to send the ball out wide to the flanks, Saugeais found a hole in the defense, and Slavomír Lohrenz took the ball for the try at the corner of the endzone. Ludwig Harden kicked the ball wide, but Saugeais still won the match 10 points to none.

The Hawks will start the second leg of the group stage, once again taking on Brodskopolis, and look to continue this good run of form on the backs of the defense.

On the streets of Drayfill:

"Twelve-ten!"

"That's the way to play, take down the top seed of the group."

"Tries by Marshall and Cook, two conversions, a second win."

"So why are we in third?"

"Doesn't make much sense, does it. If we kick either of the conversions we missed against Kulverint we're clear first."

"But we didn't, and we aren't. Hard luck."

"Hard cheese on the other guys, we still play 'em all again."

Despite loss to Waltzing Matilda, Darmen sits atop Pool D

Darmen kicked off the current campaign with a win over Ajaundar, 35-8. The decisive win was what Manager Andre Hartman called, "a good start." He went on to coment further, saying, "We really played well, both offensively and defensively, and I hope that we continue to keep it that way." Darmen did play well again in their next match, defeating Kulverint 20-12. Hartman called the victory a "sound one", saying, "We really needed that win against the next best team in the group."

But the good play was not present as Darmen faced Waltzing Matilda, losing 10-12 as Marshall Stephen scored a try for Waltzing Matilda just as time ran out, and the conversion following the try sealed the win. "I have to give it to them (Waltzing Matilda), they played a darn good match." With three of the four teams in Pool D sitting at 2-0-1, the final half of the Group Stage will be important.

"We have the advantage in Point Differential, and we've beaten two of the three teams soundly and just lost to the other team in the final moments. I think we'll have no problem winning the Pool, and getting into the Round of 16. Beyond that it's always hard to tell, but if we get hot, I don't think a trip to the Semis is out of the question.

Elsewhere, Saugeais has looked very good in their three victories, only giving up 2 points so far. Cyborg Holland leads Pool B, but Mapletish is hot on their tails. Wolfmanne has suprised everyone be leading Pool C, a spot which most would have thought Michael VII would occupy. The highest seed in the Cup, Logria, hasn't looked that bad, but just barley pulling off the victory against Jonodonia and drawing with The Kytler Peninsulae isn't exactly what you would've expected from the #4 team in the world. Polar Islandstates looks to be in control of Pool F, while the other three teams in the pool will have to decide who goes ahead as the second place finisher. As for Pools G and H Swartaz and Chetkosk are in the lead, as expected, but Chetkosk has Ancharmunn hot on its tail.
