Part 3: Money, Money, Money
Welcome to the 3rd part of this feature on Ipelandic football history. If you missed part one and part two they are available in the archives.. If you just want to see the results click here, or scroll to the bottom of the page. On with Part 3.
Part 3 of this continuing series begins in the 1950's, a time of economic boom which lasted throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. It was a prosperous time, and football clubs cashed in on the spare money suddenly found by fans. 1956 saw a record total crowd of 1,003,231 fans attended all of the games, the first time it had gone over 1 million, and a rise of 13.5% from last year. Total revenue from that year was over QI 5,000,000.
On the pitch, the league was basically a two horse race between Melberton Town and Caelon County for the title throughout most of the 50s. Between them they won all the 10 titles, 5 IFA cups and 2 'IFA and League winners shield', a competition between the league winners and the IFA cup winners. The clubs were fairly local to each other, so fights often occurred between the fans of the two teams.
The 1950s also saw the start of a trend called 'yo-yoing', in which teams would get promoted from Division Two and the next season relegated from Division One, the next season getting promoted from Division Two etc. It was a phenomena practiced by many teams, which was probably used to get more money from the IFA, but these suspicions were never confirmed, as some clubs saw a 'two-year' loss after getting relegated from Division One.
1961 saw Walkden F.C., a phoenix club from the bankrupt Walkden Town, gain promotion to Division One after spending 6 years in Division Two. They were relegated that same season, finishing bottom with 24 points, a record low which still stands today. Crowds still grew and grew throughout the 1960s, hitting the 5 million mark in 1969.
Money kept pouring in to all the football clubs, leading to more and more expensive players. The first QI 1,000,000 transfer came in 1973 and a QI 2,000,000 transfer came following year. On the pitch the rest of the 1900s saw little change in the landscape. Still a two horse race for the title, still yo-yoing teams, Walkden F.C. still doing well in the IFA Cup. Division One was renamed the Premier League in 1998, and was reduced to the top ten teams in the last season of Division One. The bottom ten remained in a Division One, which was now situated below the Premier League.
As 1999 ended, many football hoped for something more exciting in the 2000s. They were not disappointed.
