Ruadhan Hurling

Hurling is the national sport of the Ruadhan people. Except for Gaelic football, all their best sports involve sticks. But hurling is the greatest contest of all, and the biggest sporting event in the land is the grand final of the All-Ruadha Championship.

Men and women play on the same teams, and female players have been asterisked in the roster. Each player's home seat is also given.

13 Seoras Menzies (Galway), right corner-forward
14 Caoimhe Parker* (Maryborough), centre forward
15 Criomthann O'Cullinan (Lerwick), left corner-forward

Sceálta Grinn
Gaelic Athletics Assembly

The tall ship Sceálta Explorer has sailed into the Sorth Sea and hauled it's long masts into the dock at Beningrad. Across the wide oceans and via a punchy stopover in Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, the Explorer has come to deliver it's mighty cargo of heroes from the ten Gaelic athletics clubs of emerald Sceálta Grinn. Forty six they number and none shall call themself leader nor coach nor captain, for they are a rambunctious crew and not easily commanded, this autonomous Fenian collective.

Travelling with the Invincibles and the Brotherhood, as the teams of each code are nicknamed, is the renowned Tamarindian poet, novelist, folk punk, drunk and reveller Francisco Vasquez García; along to document the adventure with his friend Leonardo on the accordioné.

PIGGA present the Gaelic Football Team of Polar Islandstates (formerly, of The Old Knight)

Formed when Dimitar O'Beirne, the son of a Sorthern ex-pat, saw an advert for the Gaelic Games World Championships whilst drinking with his friends in a Yuzhny pub called The Old Knight, the Polar Islandstates Gaelic Games Association will be sending a team made of the same players into both the gaelic football and hurling competitions. This may leave me with some very tired players, but there you go. See special information for any more details about the players, more will no doubt be added as I RP and get to know more about them myself.

Number, name, age, position, special information

Starting fifteen
1: Emrahn Petlyuk, 37, Goalkeeper, Landlord of The Old Knight
2: Guus Axelsen, 39, Right corner back, weekend nights bouncer
3: Eyvindur Hauge, 44, Full back, former Yuzhny Equinox FC defender
4: Sammi Amdahl, 26, Left full back
5: Tobiasz Lyakhova, 30, Right half back
6: Ingrid Modjeska, 35, Centre back, The hard as nails pump maid
7: Lukas Rybkin, 34, Left half back
8: Jesper Puchkin, 27, Midfielder, Alexsander's brother, both had tryouts for the Novaya Zemlya Rugby League team as youths
9: Alexsandr Puchkin, 31, Midfielder, Jesper's brother, both had tryouts for the Novaya Zemlya Rugby League team as youths
10: Josep O'Beirne, 32, Right half forward, Dimitar's less enthusiastic older brother
11: Timo Skye, 37, Centre half forward, no, not that Timo Skye.
12: Linnea Dahl, 19, Left half forward, student with a part-time barmaid job
13: Finnur Lamm, 49, Right corner forward
14: Dimitar O'Beirne, 29, Full forward (Captain), The player who originally got so excited and co-erced his friends into all this
15: Yannis Korsgaard, 27, Left corner forward, takes all this pretty seriously

Substitutes
16: Wolfgang Weber, 32, Goalkeeper
17: Serge Salvensen, 19, Back, another student, all this exercise isn't really for him but he's obsessed by Linnea so signed up
18: Cillain O'Beirne, 58, Back, Dimitar and Josep's father, is actually very good at both sports, but has chronic back problems
19: Henning Mikkelsen, 24, Midfielder
20: Anders Hansen, 67, Forward, resident drunk, rarely sober... or conscious.
21: Willem Sannes, 56, Forward, Cillian's workmate

The Brotherhood Prevails

Míċeál Dubhchonna came down to the shore of the wide touchline on a rainy night at Cuála Lane, and the young princes of the resistance in the family enclosure threw insults and the skins of prátaí at him in equal measure, him wearing the blazing azure of the Forty Shilling Freeholders, the old enemy. The fruit of suicide grey skies rained down upon him, and a drip formed on his old roman bridge. Steam roiled off his brow, for the night was close and the man a cauldron heated by his efforts. Eóin Consaidín and his Monument boys were hard upon his tail, hurleys ready and searching out the sliotar. Stand back, calls Dubhchonna to the home fans favourite, stand back Consaidín, for I mean to strike thee. But since when did the Emmet Monument cower to the cry of a Shillingman? Eóin descended upon him, and the combat was engaged.

Fierce is the rivalry of Emmet Monument and the Forty Shilling Freeholders as the testimony of the sportswriter illustrates; no quarter asked nor given. The same is true of Fingal Battalion and the 7 Septs of Leix. Or Boulagh Commons and the Fenians. Plenty more rivalries you'll know of too, for the men of Sceálta Grinn will tell a comic tale and laugh hard with it as they square-punch the daylights out of you on a Friday night in the Swilly. And then next day they'll meet you in the street, if you're still about your business, and greet you with the music of the day, kinship affirmed by your fighting. The rough and tumble. And here they are now, in the Northland, but all such rivalry forgot in the name of the honour of the Grinnish. Míceál Dubhchonna stands shoulder to shoulder with Eóin Consaidín, and they are not old enemies but The Brotherhood, and with one intent, to prevail. But what of their mutual rivalry and mistrust? For certain, they worked it out on the way here, below decks on the Sceálta Explorer, for can you not see, Eóin has the blue and yellow and purple around his left eye, and I'll warrant it is a knuckleprint, given him by the Shillingman Dubchonna. And does not Mícaél have an extra angle in the profile of his bridge, as if his nose were broken? Eóin will not have taken the colours to his eye without giving back in equal measure. And see here, Tomás Beag, the rose coloured cheeks not powder nor tan, but the bloom of a good hard punch; and Lingulf Mac Roibeard with pawprint around his throat, and whoever had that grip must've paid in ribs, see his hands all bent with the punching? Forty six pugnacious Grinns all confined to quarters on the Explorer, what else would they do but work out their differences? And now stand The Brotherhood, and tomorrow The Invincibles, in the green and the black and the blue, ready for anything at Gaelic Games World Championships. Come all ye hurleymen and footballers too, have ye got what it takes to make the Grinnishman laugh?

Image

Image
Invincible Always

They have beards for good reason, these fighting Grinns, for have you not heard, it makes them more intimidating? They like to appear as the Gods and the Heroes of old in the song and legend of the forging of Sceálta Grinn, and by thus wearing such imagery of the immortal, they are saying to you, their opponent, take me on, if ye dare, but be warned, for certain I am invincible, now and always. It has been the way of the men of that emerald place for a thousand years, and in that time each oppressor who steps upon the wet and windy shore of Sceálta Grinn, to claim it as his own or as the bauble of some far paper crown, will have faced the bearded men and paid the price for it. Does not Calbhach Cicliamhás look like Fassaugh himself, of the Oldest Ones, who runs with the hounds and laughs while he puts you under? And you would not be the first to think Seán Mag Fhearadhaigh of Fingal Battalion was Green Camlough the titan of the heath. After all, he thinks it himself, when he puts on the football shirt and straps the leather to his beardy head, and takes up the ball for Battalion. Do not laugh, you men of scant beards and women of mere whiskers, for they come to Sorthern Northland in full plume, the finest beards of all Sceálta, to wrest from you all hopes you have for glory and the shiny cup. With manes like Leighlinn and voices like thunderous Dúrra, It is ours, they cry, unhand it!

Beningrad Morning Star

Inability to goal early concern in World Championship

With the first round of matches in both hurling and football at the Gaelic Games World Championship an early idea of what to expect from the various teams can be taken. For the home nation the largest question to have been asked appears to be whether the Sorthern forward lines have the quality to mount serious challenges.

Neither the Sorthern hurling or football panels were able to score a single goal in their seventy minutes against Swartaz and Sceálta Grinn respectively. Against Swartaz any problems in having the ball make it's way into the net were resoundingly negated by a supreme ability to instead score points.

Where Swartaz were able to score a goal and add a further eight points to it, the Sorthern hurlers pointed on a total twenty-four occasions with Dahy O'Dowd on the right leading the way in scoring some eleven points. Much of the capacity and admittedly partisan crowd in Páirc Cú Chulainn appeared to be in agreement that such was the Sorthern dominance of the match that a goal or two would have been deserved. In truth however goalscoring opportunities were few and far between with the Sorthern forwards content to constantly hit long range points rather than go for a goal.

Such a tactic was one that their footballing counterparts perhaps should have attempted. At the Tailteann Grounds it was a goal that proved to be the difference between Sorthern Northland and a Sceálta Grinn side among the early favourites. Prior to the match such an assumption had been exactly that. Assumptions based only on the extremely limited information known about the 'Invincibles' and their hurling comrades the 'Brotherhood', essentially a team sheet.

“Look at their names, they must be good, the games are in their blood” appeared to be the common consensus. The positions were even listed in the Gaeilge tongue. Not just that but they had the very appearance of the Gods from ancient legend. Given the venue for the match it was perhaps a surprise that a figure similar to Tailtiu made no appearance.

The match itself though proved to be absorbing contest. One that enthralled spectators in a manner that the Tailteann Games of old surely would have. If one team were nicknamed the 'Invincibles' it appeared to periods as though both teams were invincible. Neither side willingly gave an edge and both gave and took in equal measure.

Rádhulbh Ó Donnchadha was the first to score, pointing from wide on the left to give the home side an early lead. It was however a point which appeared to merely inspire Seán Mag Fhearadhaigh, sporting a beard beyond his nineteen years, to venture up to the other end and similarly point. Tomás Pádraig Ághas would then add a further point, only for Sceálta Grinn's lead to be cancelled out by a Lucy Brannigan point from a free. And so it would continue throughout, points were clearly not the be all and end all for either side however.

Several passages of play lead to goalscoring opportunities, the umpires green flags being kept down only by some inspired defending and finishing not befitting the play that had gone beforehand. Alfie Reagan in particular was guilty of spurning Sorthern chances, likewise Míċeál Ó Coileáin for Sceálta Grinn. The difference between the two sides was to come from Seán Maolchalann. A move started by him in a the middle of the park found it's way out to the right hand side with Séamus Sagart and Seán Mag Fhearadhaigh combing to excellent effect to work the ball down the wing before pulling it inside to the edge of the square for the onrushing Maolchalann to take a quick dribble before unleashing a shot for which Joseph Clayton in the home goal can have had no chance.

It was a classy goal and a befitting decideder for a high quality match, summed up succinctly by bainisteoir Natiga Teymurzadə who claimed “Sceálta Grinn were always spoken of as favourites but it was largely based on pure speculation. Now we've seen them we no longer need to speculate on their tag. They have the quality and they've won a match of a quality that would be befitting the final match.”

Psychotic Dictatorship

Postby Polar Islandstates » Sat Oct 01, 2011 4:28 pm

"You know what," said Guus Axelsen, swinging his hurley from side to side as the team walked off the pitch together, "I could get used to this hurling lark."

"Yeah, Dimitar, I'm not so sure we should give Guus the hurleys anymore. Seeing him with it in action was... well, terrifying." said Cillian.

"Guus was terrifying?" stammered Dimitar "did you not see Ingrid?!"

"What's wrong with my hurley work?" pouted Ingrid, hurt.

"Nothing was wrong with it, per se. Its just that, well, you've got arms built for changing barrels and louding them off vans and stuff like that. Seeing you wield that thing was mildly intimidating. Efficient, but intimidating."

"Mind you," piped up Dimitar's brother Josep as they entered the changing room, "Linnea stunned me."

"Why? What did I do?" asked Linnea sweetly, a butter-wouldn't-melt look on her face.

"You're a freakin' psycho, that's what! You go out all sweet and innocent and like you wouldn't hurt a fly... I saw you trip three people, knock another one over, and crack their keeper on the forehead with your hurley when the referee wasn't looking!"

"Well, he said mean things about old Anders! I couldn't have that!"

"Why not? Anders was passed out for most of the match. He wouldn't have heard it."

"Well, still. I didn't like it."

"Remind me not to mess with you next time last orders comes around..."

"Which reminds me," said one of the Puchkins, leaning forwards, "pub?"

"I cannot see a flaw with that whatsoever." said the other Puchkin. Nobody could ever really tell them apart...

"I'm surprised you can see anything, the way you ran into that post."

"Aye yeah, that did smart. Not gonna lie."

"What have you dragged me into here anyway Cillian?" asked Willem, Cillian's friend from work."

"Me?! I haven't got you anything. You've got my boy Dimitar to blame for that. I just mentioned you still had both your original hips and you'd passed the test apparently."

"We were struggling for numbers a bit, I'll admit." said Dimitar, "Willem and Eyvindur were the last additions to the squad. Not Anders though. Oddly. His name was one of the first on the list. Actually, talk of the devil..."

"Fnhaaaaaarghhrearrrrrrrr..." came a moan as Anders woke up, "...right then. Second half, yeah? Lets go!"

"The second half has been and gone, old man. You fell asleep whilst 'celebrating' the first one."

"Ah. Right. Win or lose?"

"Win, actually. Pretty dramatic too. Linnea scored a great goal in the last few minutes to seal it for us."

"Ah excellent! Well done young Linnea! So then, victory pints?"

"Couldn't have put it better myself, Anders. Shall we?" said Dimitar, holding the door open as the tired and happy players limped away to the pub. They had another match tomorrow, and with zero training time available, geting drunk seemed as good an activity to them as any other.
