Mcleod Cup V for Babbage rules football (complete)

Postby The Babbage Islands » Fri Sep 02, 2011 2:20 am

Mcleod Cup V
An international Babbage rules football tournament

The Mcleod Cup is the premier international competition in Babbage rules football. Cup management issue a call for teams representing the nations of the world, be they bona fide national select teams, professional or amateur clubs, universities or other bodies, to gather at Wye, South Island to compete in Mcleod Cup V.

We have 20 teams entered from the last tournament, and are prepared to accept any multiple of four up to 32 teams. Should more than 32 teams apply they will be accepted first come, first served. A maximum of one team per nation and two teams per controlling entity will be observed. (Various puppets of the host nation are available if and only if needed by management to fill out the field to a multiple of four teams.)

The competition will run over two weeks, with six match days scheduled. The first week will see the contestants divided into four-team pools using a pot-system draw that recognises international rankings. A single round-robin of three games per team will be contested in each pool. The second week will see the field split into single-elimination brackets to contest the Mcleod Cup and also (in descending order of precedence) the Plate, Bowl, and Shield minor awards in a manner frankly borrowed from rugby sevens competition.

Tuesday, September 13 -- Pool play, round 1
Thursday, September 15 -- Pool play, round 2
Saturday, September 17 -- Pool play, round 3

Monday, September 19 -- Quarterfinal matches
Wednesday, September 21 -- Semifinal matches
Friday, September 23 -- Final matches

A technical document is appended that outlines precise structures for varying numbers of teams.

Basic organisation

Pool play is single round-robin in pools of four teams, drawn using a pot system. The exact order of matches varies according to the built-in schedules of the scorinator.

All teams advance from pool play into one of four three-round, single-elimination* tournaments. In order of prestige they are the Cup, the Plate, the Bowl, and the Shield. (* In certain circumstances, first-round losers parachute into the second round of a lesser competition.)

Quarterfinals are paired by overall rank from pool play, with all first-places ahead of second-places, all seconds ahead of thirds, and all thirds ahead of fourths.

Cup/Plate Quarterfinals: All first-place and second-place teams. Best two third-place teams.

Ranking of teams from pool play

  1. Total competition points based on 3 per win, 2 per draw, and 1 per loss.
  2. When exactly two teams in a pool tie on competition points, their relative standing in the pool is based on the result of the head-to-head match between the teams.
  3. If #1 is tied and #2 is inapplicable or indecisive, teams are ranked based on net margin of points for minus points against in their three matches.
  4. If #3 is indecisive, teams are ranked based on total points for in their three matches.
  5. If #4 is indecisive, ranking is determined by lot.

Technical support will be provided using the xkoranate 0.3.2 system. Fair play assessments (OOC: RP bonus) are generous and based on an accumulation of performances for each round. Early submission of team rosters to facilitate media coverage is viewed favourably in addition to other efforts.

Future editions of the Mcleod Cup will be scheduled annually (OOC: Babbage time--monthly IRL), instead of the ad hoc scheduling of the past. To ease the burden on federations and encourage continuity of programmes, all nations that enter and complete the fifth Cup will automatically receive complimentary entry to the sixth Cup without further application. Of course, requests to not receive automatic entry will be honoured, and such entry will be withdrawn should the national federation cease to exist.

Mcleod Cup VI is expected to begin on October 11.
Mcleod Cup VII is expected to begin on November 8.

Mcleod Cup V Entry

Despite the best efforts of Hugo Caillett, Babbage Rules Football is still almost unknown in Tamarindia, apart from a select group of enthusiasts at the Academy for International Relations in Libertad. Here people study for careers in the diplomatic service, the international Units, and other trades relating to the wider world. Hugo, lecturer in experimental sports and admirer of Babbage Rules, coached the Tamarindo to a shock Mcleod Cup IV Bowl last year and was disappointed to return home to a largely disinterested welcome. Undeterred, Hugo immediately set about the founding of the official governing body for the sport in Tamarindia, appointed himself Commissioner and commissioned a small office at AIR, an account on the photocopy machine, and the logo you see above. Even in the Faculty of Experimental Sports, his passion has been met with a combination of mild surprise, ambiguous head-shaking, and some sniggering in private corners of the campus.

One year on from those glorious days in the Babbage Islands, Hugo has progressed no further with his project, running up against a wall of indifference. But It's time for the McLeod Cup again, and with hope rather than expectation, Coach Hugo has dusted off his playbook and put together a team of interested players for another tilt at the Cup. Only time will tell if his passion will translate into success on the field in The Babbage Islands, and more interest in the corridors of experimental sports back home.

Many of the team from last year are back for another shot, notable absentees being Quique Sanz who disappeared in-country last year after being recruited by AIR Unit-5, The Specialists who specialise in making international relations work out, by making... adjustments, and Trinidad Solaté who now lectures in Tamarindian Militant Atheism at Charleston Theological College here in the islands. New competitors this season are Tica Uribe, Erminia Negrón Osorio, César Mendieta, and young prodigy Tusnelda Montez Murillo.

McLeod Cup V Roster

Image

Offense
Estrella Volpicelli, snapper F 24
Student of International Conflict. In her final year of her Masters Degree and returning for her second appearance in the McLeod Cup. Still wants to be a peacemaker diplomat. Even more worried about rogue nations led by fifteen-year-old totalitarian warmongers.

Carmen Ordóñez, slant F 30
Returning for her second McLeod Cup. A Doctor of Philosophy presently engaged in thinking about 'supernatural players' - the idea that nation states – even the whole world - are run by external 'gods' who are simply 'playing a game.' Has spent the year working with football hero Masvidal, a proponent of supernatural player theory.

Nesto Doma, fly M 23
Appearing in his second McLeod Cup. Final year student of Experimental Sports. Which means sports not played in Tamarindia. Nesto hopes to become an international ambassador for Tamarindian football, preferably somewhere scenic and peaceful.

Sinclética Uribe, deep/OB F 22
McLeod Cup debut. Final year student of experimental sports, perhaps a little on the friendly side with Fernando Durán. Sinclética, or Tica, missed out on the trip last year after Mrs. Durán accidentally dropped a coal bucket on her foot and broke three bones. Is thinking about a career in Babbalo.

Lucio La Spada, screen M 35
Appearing in his second McLeod Cup. Part-time lecturer in Rushmori & One Big Island Studies. A follower of Babbage Rules, he has a pirate satellite receiver to watch the NABC Premier League live games on television. Supports Wye Whalers.

Fernando Durán, QB M 35
Appearing in his second McLeod Cup. Head of Experimental Sports. A former professional footballer who played for AIR Libertad. Retains a healthy scepticism for experimental sports whilst excelling at pretty much any that he tries out. If he'd started twenty years earlier, could've been an international Babbage Code sensation.

Defense
Jessenia Castro, safety F 22
Appearing in her second McLeod Cup. Student of Philosophy and research assistant to Carmen Ordóñez on the Supernatural Players theory. A devout athiest who thinks multidimensional string theory might explain where ex-nations go.

Jérôme Alderete, charger M 25
Appearing in his second McLeod Cup. Studying a Masters degree in Global Geography. Working on a paper to explain variation in international cartography. Publicly admits he is stuck and may also use string theory to help dig himself out.

Erminia Negrón Osorio, nickel F 21
McLeod Cup debut. Second year student of experimental sports. Hoping to be a sports journalist with an international brief, famously dating footballer Daniel Magnín, the new young sensation of the Tamarindo di Bradini Cup campaign, whom she feels is intellectually short but physically not so short.

Xénia Masa, middle F 36
Appearing in her second McLeod Cup. Doctor of International Pharmaceuticals. Specialising in reconstructing compounds of expensive medical treatments for cheap distribution to fifth- and sixth-world countries. Used her last trip to buy Babbalonian Prozac for 'analysis', which is soon to be manufactured by pharmaceutical syndicate Positivo as BBG Compound Pro and distributed cheaply to the globally depressed as a way of brightening up the world.

Hugo Caillett, rusher M 44 Captain & Coach
His second McLeod Cup. Lecturer in Experimental Sports. Loves Babbage Rules, supports the Purple Wave. Would like to form a Babbage league when he gets back, after appointing himself the first Tamarindian Babbage Code Commissioner.

César Mendieta, middle M 21
McLeod Cup debut. Retaking the final year of his experimental sports degree after specialising in Lockey last year and going on the disastrous tour to Alfabetostuk for the Gregory Cup. This time he is specialising in Babbalo and hopes to complete his degree at the second attempt. Unpredictable personality. Hard to defend against, hard to play with, hard to understand, hard to get on with.

Bench
Alfredo de Torrente, M 66
His second McLeod Cup. Professor of Experimental Sports. A former professional footballer who played for Unión Libertad. Believes that if he'd started forty years earlier, could've been an international Babbage Code sensation. Hoping for the record of oldest player in McLeod Cup history, if only someone would check back on the news threads from previous competitions.

Tusnelda Montez Murillo, F 19
The youngest member of the squad and making her debut at the McLeod Cup, Tusnelda is a first year student of Forum 7 Studies, which is a bit like International Literature Studies, but only a bit. She hopes to become a cultural attaché to promote Tamarindian literature abroad, but is having second thoughts after a year looking at Forum 7.

RP PERMISSIONS
Granted in full: Knock yourself out - or us. Anything goes, except preserve us from death or supernatural happenings. If it could happen, it can happen.

Spitfyred1 has a strong sporting tradition that they hope can be converted into a stronger performance in the Mcleod Cup. As Babbage Rules is a developing sport in Spitfyred1 many of the competitors play overseas or were convinced to join Spitfyred1 with a hefty... thank-you package.

Offense - The team uses a derivitive of the American football "veer" formation, with two halfbacks behind the quarterback on either side. The team is balanced between passing and rushing.

Chris Stone (Centre) - Chris is a converted American Football player. A hulking man to disguise the offense, he also has a stand-up comedy show.
Electra Oedipus (Quarterback/Quarterback) - Electra was possibly the best Babbage Rules player in Spitfyred1 History, but despite her increasing age (35) she continues to be a dual option threat.
Suga Sweets (Halfback) - Suga is a great runner who is adept at finding running lanes. As a reciever she prefers screen passes.
Candi Sweets (Halfback) - Candi is Suga's identical twin. Candi is better as a reciever, utilizing her speed. She is a decent runner.
Thomas Weasel (Fly) - Thomas is an acrobatic reciever often ending up on the highlight reels. He has a strong rapport with Electra.
Jacob Fox (Deep/Slant) - Jacob is the brute reciever of the team, getting most receptions. He isn't flashy but has good hands.

Defense - the Fyreballz defense is very basic dependent on man (or woman) coverage.

Karl Marks (Rusher) - Karl is a tall man who tries to prevent the quarter back from seeing his or her reciever by wildly flailing his hands.
Jen Apple (Corner) - Jen is a quick lady who can keep with most of the fastest player. She covers the opponents fastest player.
Simone Sunshine (Corner) - Simone is a decent defender who stays mostly on the inside of the field.
Dove Partridge (Corner) - Dove is a ex-reciever with great hands. Her niche is interceptions and she mostly covers wings.
Pete Worst (Corner) - Pete is used to being overlooked, but is decent. He is used to covering the backs.
Creon Oedipus (Safety) - Creon is Electra's son and is very close to her. He is not very quick, but from his vantage point quite adept at his position.

Bench

Jane Zee (Orange Wing) - Jane is best as a wing using her great hands. She can also play quarterback.
Elliot Missy (Offense) - Elliot is a utility player but not fantastic at anything. His main position is as a screen.
Boots Nails (Defense) - Boots is a very masculine woman. She is tough and plays as a charger.
"Pops" O'Hanahan (Defense) - Pops is the old wise guy who plays little but coaches a lot. He can play but prefers to stand around shouting at the players.

Darmen Times
Mcleod Cup V Preview

Pool One
1. Darmen
2. Tarrentum
3. Thatius
4. Spitfyred1
The defending champions got a very nice draw, and will only need to worry about Tarrentum. Thatius and Spitfyred1 look overmatched, and Darmen should have no trouble beating them.

Pool Two
1. Krytenia
2. Delaclava
3. ABK
4. Garon-Averia
Krytenia and Delaclava should have no trouble beating ABK and Garon-Averia, but the Krytenia vs. Delaclava fixture looks to be one of the most exciting group stage matchups of the whole tournament.

Pool Three
1. Andossa Se Mitrin Vega
2. Civil Citizenry
3. Cyborg Holland
4. Carmadin
ASMV has the easiest group out of all the top ranked teams. ASMV should have no trouble winning the group, but the big question is how the bottom of the group table will look.

Pool Four
1. The Babbage Islands
2. Wadomia
3. Armorgames
4. Kerblaekistan
Why wouldn't The Babbage Islands do well at their own sport. TBI should have no problem winning their group, while Wadomia and Armorgames will have to battle it out for second.

Pool Five
1. Newmanistan
2. Wolfmanne
3. Vettera
4. Solra
Newmanistan should have an easy time winning, while our hated rivals in Wolfmanne will struggle to win their group stage matchups against Vettera and Solra.

Pool Six
1. Tamarindia
2. Cassadaigua
3. Chuckio
4. Beldonia
Tamarindia performed very well during Mcleod Cup IV, and we think they'll win their group. Cassadaigua is in a decline, no matter how much they don't want to admit it. Chuckio should also do well, but their inexperience will cost them.

K1 Shield Quarterfinal: Thatius over Garon-Averia
K2 Shield Quarterfinal: Beldonia over Solra
K3 Shield Quarterfinal: Kerblaekistan over Carmadin
K4 Shield Quarterfinal: Vettera over Spitfyred1
K5 Bowl Quarterfinal: Tarrentum over Cyborg Holland
