Five Days of Hell Everything Thread

Postby Virabia » Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:09 pm

First, I know your thinking, hey wait.... QoD's doing a tour... Well think of this as a Tour of California to his Giro... Except much harder than the Giro could ever be because it's organised by sadists. Of the Super Sadist Variety.

Anyway with out further ado: Five Days of Hell...

What is It?: Five Days of Hell is a cycling race held every year in Virabia and aside from the 26 day Vuelta Virabia is potentially the hardest cycling event on the domestic circuit. Despite only being five days it is infamous for being organised in a way where as the race organiser Mark Evans puts it "If one man finishes, we've done our job." To do this no punches are spared. Each day riders go over some of the toughest climbs imaginable as they struggle to not only survive but for a few wear the coveted Red Jersey as the overall leader of the tour, a prize reserved for the few who can conquer the high peaks of The Arch.

Sweet So What's the Red Jersey: The Red Jersey is one of the five jerseys given out in the tour. An explanation of the three is below.

Red Jersey (General Classification): The Red Jersey goes to the leader of the General Classification and unlike the rest of the world, GC works a bit differently in Virabia. Instead of racing for the lowest time, at the end of each stage and at mountain peaks (other races include sprint points) riders are given points based upon which position they come in. The goal is to amass the most points at the end of the tour so you can stand atop the podium. Exactly how many points are to be given out on each stage and on each climb will be given out later. Also note that Points are given out to riders in a rather unique fashion. While the top five riders gain more points, riders beyond that are given points based upon the group in which they finish and how far said group is behind the leader. (Trust me it will make sense).

Rainbow Jersey (Mountains Classification): The Rainbow Jersey is given to the person who has the most points ammassed only from climbs. Often times one is competitive in both the rainbow and the red jersey.

Tan Jersey (Intermediate Sprints Classification): While there are few sprints in this race, there is still recognition for the rider who is best in intermediate sprints. Like other competitions this is a point based system and the one with the highest number of points wins.

White Jersey (Young Riders): The white jersey is given to the best rider in the GC who is under 25.

Technical Details of the Race

It will be scorinated by Liventia's cycling scoranator and the following information will need to be provided.

Team name/National team name and attributes (see below)
Rider names (six or less) and attributes (see below)

Attributes: Flats, Climbs, Sprints
There are two sets: one overall for the team, and one for each individual rider.
TEAM attributes: maximum in any category is 5, minimum is 0.1; sum of all three must not exceed 10
RIDER attributes: maximum in any category is 4, minimum is 0.1; sum of all three should not exceed 8
(Trust me, you will want some flat abillity and definately some sprinting abillity)
The team's attributes will be added to each individual rider's attributes for scorination.

Now your probably wondering which kind of rider should I enter: A climber. Preferably one who is insane.

Note that at this point there is no set date so I will run once I get numbers (or know that I won't be getting numbers). The aim is for around 20-22 teams. Like with the Southham - Vonghurst, Virabi teams will be added in to make up the numbers.

Stage One: Charleston -> Mt. Julich (99.15 km)

The first stage of this years race is one of the two races that lack any HC climbs but, do not be fooled into mistaking that this stage is any walk in the park. With six climbs that give points to the King of the Mountains classification (including four from Categories 1 and 2), it's safe to say that this stage will make riders who are not used to the sadism of Virabi Race Organisers begin to regret their decision to ride.

The stage itself starts right in the heart of downtown Charleston where a large crowd will be present to cheer the riders on as they make the Grand Departure on their route to Beaverbury. The initial few kilometeres of the course will zigzag through narrow city streets, which in theory should be the easiest part of the stage but, remember, The people who organise this event are sadists. This zig-zagging is done on narrow cobbled streets and with a forecast scheduled for rain, it will be slippery as well and riders will not want to risk going too fast into the corners lest they want to risk crashing and taking others down with them. There is not much cause for fear, this only lasts the first five kilometres. After that, the peloton will be thrust onto another narrow road, this time the road is paved and as the riders begin to exit the city they will be treated to the first climb of the race, Collins Hill.

Image

The climb itself is nothing special and with the exception of a few daring souls who think they can go the course alone, the only attacks will be small ones by King of the Mountain favourites who want to establish somewhat of an ordinary lead.

1st: 3
2nd: 2
3rd: 1

After reaching the top of Collins Hill, the riders will descend back down into a valley and will turn left on to a valley road that will take them through the heart of a thick pine forest and further inland. This road is rather easy on the palette, it's mostly flat but the overall trajectory sees a ever so slight rise as the road nears the base of the first real climb of this years race, Hunt Hill.

Image
Image

While shorter than Collins Hill (it's not even 4 kilometres), this climb will present a significant challenge to riders. It averages at a gradient of just over 10% but at some sections it rises to around 17%. The road is difficult too. The riders have turned off the valley road, going back north bound and while the bottom is paved, near the top it changes into a loose dirt pass that will give riders justification to be worried of both the climb but more so the descent which has a couple steep sections on non paved road.

1st: 10
2nd: 6
3rd: 4
4th: 2
5th: 1

After the descent, riders will be put back onto another valley road. This one is paved, but like most roads riders will encounter on this race, narrow, only wide enough for one and a half cars. Never fear, they won't be on this road for all to long as they immediately veer back off, once again toward the north and onto the first of three ascents that make up the riders climb of Mt. Adams.

Image

This represents the first of something rather common in Virabi cycling, the fragmented climb. (The best comparison i can think of IRL is the Col du Galibier which has the Col du Telegraph before it) These climbs are marked by ascents, followed by small or flat periods which are followed by further ascents and King of the Mountain points are given only at the top of the mountain.

Now as for the first section itself, if it stood alone, it would be given a Cat II rating. At only 4.64 km and a grade of just below seven percent, it will certainly be tough but not too demanding for the field. The numerous switchbacks and senic backdrop will make it a favourite for fans who want to see just a bit more than the two seconds when the riders go by. Once they reach the high point of 471 metres they will descend for a bit and resume climbing an ascent similar to the last one but, just a tad easier. Once again, expect a fair number of rowdy fans to be present. Waving flags, screaming, running aside riders in goose costumes. All the stuff that makes the sport the beautiful thing that it is. Once again, the riders will dip down before taking a short climb to the forested top of Mt. Evans.

1st: 20
2nd: 15
3rd: 10
4th: 5
5th: 3
6th: 1

Once they reach the top of Mt. Evans, the peloton will descend quite a ways down, to an elevation of 475 metres but aside from the long, twisty descent there will be little chance for the riders to recooperate as they will be thrust onto the second fragmented climb of the day. This time the riders will go up the rather tame slopes of Rodman Pass, which features two main sections. The first of which is a Category III climb which presents nothing special, a couple of turns and a gentle but steady slope will be in front of riders who make it to this point and while the climb itself is not difficult, those who are not elite climbers on top of their game may start to dip in to the red zone.

Image

After that the riders will go up another small incline to the peak of Rodman Pass, which, at 824 metres is the high point of the stage.

1st: 8
2nd: 5
3rd: 3
4th: 1

Once riders scale Rodman pass, they will have a small descent followed by another small incline before making the long harrowing descent toward the small village of Gaxholme where at the 88 kilometre mark, riders will race through the only sprint point of the day. This will grant the following points to riders

1st: 10
2nd: 5
3rd: 3

The riders will then race along a valley road that will slightly slope upwards until it reaches the base of the day's final climb. Mt. Julich, where riders seeking the Red Jersey will seek to take out an early lead on what ever is left of the pack.

Image
Image

This final climb will be oh so difficult for riders. Tired from the days racing, they will have to dig deep with in themselves to make it up this climb and the ones with the most in the tank as well as the most mental fortitude will be the ones who are at the end of the day successful. However, let it be noted that as far as this race goes, Mt. Julich is by far not the most difficult climb the riders will face and with a tough stage the next day, riders will likely save quite a bit for the days ahead. As for the climb itself, it never gets too steep and maxes out at only 9% so it alone shouldn't devistate the field. At the top the riders will cross the finish line and at the end of a hard day's race be relieved that they are one fifth done with the race.

1st: 20
2nd: 15
3rd: 10
4th: 5
5th: 3
6th: 1

(Note: Points from 6th and beyond are determined by who is at the front of the group.
1st: 40
2nd: 30
3rd: 25
4th: 20
5th: 16
6th/Group with 6th: 14
7th/Group with 7th: 12
8th/Group with 8th: 10

Because I found out recently that I'm going away next week and won't have much internet, the closure of signups has been delayed to the 22nd and the First Stage the 24th of august. I still very much intend to run this, just do not have the time ATM.

The Carmadin National Cycling team consists of 24-30 members at any given time, and is made up of the best of the best in carmadin. For each race, delegations are sent to compete. The Delegations will consist of the cyclists who will perform best in the specific race. As such, the 6 cyclists here are all "insane" climbers

Unfortunately, the quite young ISC haven't yet been able to test their best sportlers very much, so it's unclear if we have any insane cyclists at our disposal, but our community shall send a team to compete anyway.

Team name: Community Sports Association Cycling (CSAC)
Team stats: (flat - climb - sprint): 2.5 - 5 - 2.5 (OOC: as you said minimum is 0.1 I'm assuming decimals are okay, if not I'll provide numbers without decimals you can use instead in brackets (for riders as well), for team it would be 3 - 4 - 3)

Athletes:
Martin Meyer (U25): 2 - 4 - 2
Pindo Delange 3 - 3.5 - 1.5 (3 - 3 - 2)
Lancin Ell 1 - 3 - 4
Rili Salic 2 - 3 - 3
John Jennings (U25) 2.5 - 4 - 1.5 (3 - 4 - 1)
Moharamann Rafinks 2.5 - 3 - 2.5 (2 - 3 - 3)
