Dog Racing in Tamarindia

Dog Racing in Tamarindia

OOC:

I've worked out a decent scorinating system for a dog racing event. Interested?

I would really like this not to just be a stats list so I'm going to put a bit of an RP challenge in.

I'll make this an OOC discussion and IC RP thread all in one, see how that works out.

IC:

Thirty dogs, thirty races over two days in The Whippet Stadium, Anarquía.

This year we will invite dogs from owners and kennels around the world – that's right, tourist greyhounds will compete in the Dog Festival Race of Champions. And for those tourists who do not have a dog to race – bring dollars instead. You can bet on the races.

Race Weekend Details

Postby The Golden Tamarind » Tue Jul 05, 2011 2:00 pm

RACE WEEKEND DETAILS

The Tamarindian International Dog Festival Race of Champions will happen during July.

This is a semi-open event. There will be 30 runners for the weekend.

As this is a Tamarindian event, in the first instance there will be 15 home dogs and 15 'tourists' – from other gamers. If interest is high and I decide to carry on, it could be fully open.
Event is now fully open - there are 7 home dogs entered, 23 tourist spots available.

The dogs will run in six rounds, with five groups of six dogs per round – that's a total of 30 races, with each dog running six times – three on Saturday and three on Sunday. The groups will be mixed up each time.

At the end, champions will be crowned based on prize-money won. Prize money will be given for top three finishes in races. There will also be a judges award for best presented dog, i.e. best RP.

Scorinating

Summary

The system I've built works with the dog's form, dog's health, chance and RP bonus.

Form is averaged over six past races – this will be generated randomly at the beginning but of course as races are run actual results will feed in to this.

Health is a system where factors around the dogs mental and physical health are derived from the information given at sign-up. So I'll be asking for some details which will impact on health scores.

Then there is chance – it will have about a 30% weighting on pre-RP bonus scoring.

Finally there will be a multiplier based on RP input.

Tamarindian dogs will be generated randomly, and RP will be set to the basic modifier 1.1.

Full technical details are here

RP

Anyone entering dogs into the race weekend should provide a factsheet about the dog. That is the only RP commitment. The whole dog race thing becomes a number crunching exercise if no-one participates in the RP and although it's fun to crunch numbers, I'd really like a little more out of it. A laugh, actually. A bit of a social. Friendly banter. Just like going to the dogs with your mates. To that end there is a decent weighting on the one RP entry that has to be made.

Don't write up your RP yet – specific challenges will need to be met for top point scoring, and they will be announced when the race card is published, one week before the races.

Dates

I'm looking at running the race weekend over 30/31 July.

So the card will be published 23 July, assuming we've made it and got enough dogs to run. RP will be open from Monday 25 July to Saturday morning (9am UK time) 30 July.

The first day's results will be published late afternoon, and then the new card will open Saturday from about 5pm – 9am Sunday. Final day's racing results will be published Sunday late afternoon / evening.

Any questions/suggestions/advice/demoralising references to other dog racing RPs? Post them in this thread – it's OOC / IC combined. I can take it.

Sign-Up

I do not need RP for the sign up, just a few details. Please make sure you fill these in, I need it for scorinating. Also make them realistic if you can. I don't want nuclear-powered superdogs. I will update the OP with sign-ups as and when.

This is what I need:

Dog(s) – greyhounds only please!

Dog's Name -
Gender -
Owner/Kennel Name -
Dog Colour -
Kennel Colour(s) -
Age - minimum 1.5 years - see guidelines below
No. Career Races -

Guidelines: (This is not absolute) Generally greyhounds race from 18 months old, with the more successful ones sustaining careers until about the age of 5. A dog will race between 50 – 70 races in a full career, occasionally – very rarely - topping 100 races. There are hundreds of really good websites out there to research further, and any experts are welcome to advise on here.

Just to point out I'm not a greyhound expert, only an expert on 'going to the dogs once in a while, having a drink with some mates and a small flutter on the pretty one over there' so don't take my word for it.

Alas it seems the world is not ready to come all the way to our great but obscure country just for a night out at the dogs. One can only hope that in 6,000 posts time we will have enough friends and influence to kickstart the Race of Champions. In the meantime we must reflect on our over-enthusiasm and try not to feel too embarrassed...

Perhaps what we need is a night out at the hogs. "Taxi to Wimbley!"

I think, perhaps, the main reason for you not receiving much interest is that dog racing is not really an event you go to another country to see or enter, you know? Not that I know too much about the international dog racing scene (if such a thing exists), but I would think that it is more of a domestic thing, kept within a nation's borders rather than inviting foreign canines to participate.

Hello there, I read your thread with interest. I successfully ran a Horse Racing Competition on here and have been pondered season two, but the sports scene right now is just so active that I couldn't see it fitting. Then I started hosting the World Baseball Classic.

Unlike the majority of newbies that come in here and start competitions, you have obviously put a lot of thought into what you want to do here, so using my experience in running a similar competition, my intention here is to help you get this going.

The system I've built works with four elements – Card Value, Dog Value, Chance and RP bonus.

Card value is form over six past races – this will be generated randomly at the beginning but of course as races are run actual results will feed in to this.

Dog Value is a system where factors around the dogs mental and physical health are derived from the information given at sign-up. So I'll be asking for some details which will impact on DV scores, but I don't want to give away too many details on that, it may influence the sign-ups.

Then there is chance – it will have about a 30% weighting on pre-RP bonus scoring.

Finally there will be a multiplier based on RP input – quality not quantity is what I'll be scoring on, a single writing challenge – ranging from 0.5 (RPing but ignoring the parameters of the RP challenge) to 1.75 (hitting all the right buttons). Non-RP entries will get a 0.75 on the multiplier.

Tamarindian dogs – Card Value & Dog Value will be generated randomly, and RP will be set to the median 1.125.

You're general thought process here is good, though I don't like your RP modifiers. We can get to that later.
What you don't mention is how you will tie these four factors together into the actual scorination of a time. Information on that would be nice and is critical.

I'll tally up all the betting and publish the payouts after the event – there is a ribbon for best punter, which will be decided by winnings as a percentage of stake.

Can't see betting going anywhere. I got one RP of someone picking horses based on the pre-race odds during the whole competition. But if you want to do this, bets need to be public.

Nothing wrong with the 30th and 31st, but do you really want to condense an entire competition into just two days?

Or maybe you shouldn't give up after 12 hours, which in the US, is middle of the night hours. :)

Indeed you are right - I think it's the nerves, first-timer, self-doubt, realising that not everyone shares my love of dog racing...

Anyway your supportive comments have given me a bit of encouragement. I'm very open to changing the scorination, I'll TG what I've I worked out and you can see what you think, if you don't mind. I agree on the betting - having mulled it over from a different perspective these last few hours I realise that will never work unless I have hundreds of gamblers - and then I'd crash anyway with the work involved. I'll drop this, maybe just leave odds in place in case anyone wants to play them themselves. The reason for the short stretch was just because I wanted it short and sharp thinking (a) that might be more attractive to people with lots of sporting commitments and (b) I wouldn't have tied myself up with a longer-running project that might not work out - if the whole think goes bust at least it will be over in two days. I've seen a few threads of painfully extended competition deaths... I thought if it worked out I could do bigger bolder ones in the future, start small and all that.

Can I ask how the horse racing went? Is there a thread I can look at?

Thanks again Newmanistan - I find the boards a little unforgiving at times in my short experience (probably where the nerves come from) so it was good to get some support.

Extra Detailed Scorination Process

Postby The Golden Tamarind » Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:18 am

Extra Detailed Scorination Process

With some advice and a few tweeks I think the Scorinator is ready, and if you want to scrutinise it please do - feedback appreciated. My thanks to Newmanistan for some invaluable advice on RP scoring, and for generally checking my thinking.

Forgive me if the language is convoluted.

Essentially I'm running the formula

(CV+DV+r) * RP

where CV is card value, DV is dog value, r is random 1 – 5 to one decimal point and RP is the RP points multiplier.

Card value is the dog's form. The dog will have a card of six previous races, finishing 1 – 6. A win garners 6 points, 2nd 5 points... 6th 1 point. BUT. The most recent race is more significant than the previous, and so on back to the sixth previous. So they are modified slightly, thus -

Last racex 1.0
2nd lastx 0.9
3rd lastx 0.8
4th lastx 0.7
5th lastx 0.6
6th lastx 0.5

Finally, the modified numbers are averaged to give a CV value.

The test range for this, best/median/worst (b/m/w), comes out at 4.5 / 2.63 / 0.75

Note that the card value will change over the weekend of six races as the scorinated races are added to the form card.

Dog value are the mental & physical factors. I want to take some randomness out and put in some player-generated parameters, hopefully there are enough variables that it will be impossible to set up a 'perfect' dog.

DV is calculated as the multiplication of stamina (St) and attitude, (Att). To get these factors, I've asked players to submit the age of the dog and the total number of career races.

Stamina – this will change over the weekend with each race, and favours dogs at the peak of their careers. Stamina is basically a modifier number extrapolated from the age, and changes after each race.

Dog ageRace 123456

Age 1.5 years10.80.70.90.70.6
2 - 2.5 years10.80.710.80.7
3 – 3.5 years10.90.810.90.8
4 – 4.5 years10.80.60.90.70.5
5 years +0.90.70.60.80.60.5

Here you can see that dogs decline at different rates, and recover at different rates, according to age. There is a general recovery after race 3 because there is an overnight rest.
Young dogs tire easier but recover quicker, older dogs recover slower, dogs are at their peak aged 3 – 3.5 years.

Attitude – how will the dog react to it's environment – big passionate crowds, a lot of travelling, foreign place? More experienced dogs will do better – it favours older dogs providing they have had plenty of racing. Attitude is calculated from age x experience (Exp).

For Exp, we first get an average of how many races a dog has competed in per season, RpS, based on player-submitted data. Essentially

Total races / (Age – 1.5) = RpS

where 1.5 is the age a dog starts racing. The Exp multiplier is extrapolated thus -

RpSExp

30 & over1.5
15 to 291.25
16 to 241.0
8 to 150.75
under 80.5

Finally,Exp x Age = Att

The test model provides the following outcomes (b/m/w) 7.5 / 3 / 0.75

DV, recalculated after each race – DV = St x Att

Test results for first and sixth races come in at (b/m/w)

Race 1 – 7.5 / 3.2 / 0.67
Race 6 – 6 / 2.9 / 0.37

We now have CV + DV

Test results

bCV + DV (race 1) = 12
m(race 3) = 5.43
w(race 6) = 1.12

Add random 1 – 5 to one decimal point.

The RP multipliers were worked out as follows. Points awarded could be up to max 4, down to 0 for not RPing..

So. 4 RP points multiplies by 1.5, 3 multiplies by 1.3, 2 multiplies by 1.2, 1 multiplies by 1.1, 0 – no mod.

There is no penalty for not doing the RP as initially proposed.

I haven't ironed out exactly the allocation but something like 1 pt for creativity, 1 for technical skill, 1 if it was funny, 1 for posting. Suggestions welcome.

I was planning to be clear on this at the time of setting the RP challenge.

Full test results
Finally we run the formula:
(CV+DV+r) * RP

Using a dog with median results in CV+DV, i.e. CV+DV=5.43, and b/m/w random and RP we get final race scores of 15.6 / 8.4 / 3.2
Using the most extreme test, a bionic dog that maxes every single factor would score 25.5, a chihuahua bottoming out every factor would score 1.12

There. Explained. Hope it makes senses, do TG or post feedback.

And if you got this far down the message, double thanks for sticking with it.

I'll formally signup later when I can put more thought into my entry.

I encourage people to sign up for this, for if nothing else, to help a new user who has put together a very good plan in organizing an event: something we don't see enough of here.

Owner/Kennel Name - The Vortiaganic Crown Kennels
Kennel Colour(s) - Purple (HTML code: #511945 - http://html-color-codes.info/ go down to the color picker, and put that number into the box on the top right), and black (#000000)
Dog's Name - Ragnarok
Gender - Male
Dog Colour - Black
Age - 2 years
No. Career Races - 12

Dog's Name - Ice Queen
Gender - Female
Dog Colour - Blue Brindle
Age - 2 years
No. Career Races - 12

Dog's Name - Lord of the Lines
Gender - Male
Dog Colour - Fawn
Age - 2 years
No. Career Races - 12

All three were purchased by the Royal Kennels as the first movement of Vortiaganica into international dog racing. The three originated from other kennels and were purchased, with their handlers hired, for the purpose of sending overseas to foreign stadiums. If any do particularly well, there will be a more detailed history of the original kennels provided.

Following any success of note, the Royal Kennels will most likely withdraw from international dog racing for the most part (aside from furthering the careers of our own champion dogs) and instead invest and sponsor domestic kennels from our nation in future.

It's raining cats & dogs: must be the weekend

Postby The Golden Tamarind » Fri Jul 08, 2011 3:47 am

OOC:
I'm off camping for the weekend, sign-ups updated to Monfortia, there are seven spaces left if anyone wants them - next update will be Monday or Tuesday...

IC:
The Dog Festival is proud to announce Vurox Football Equipment of Erathore as a race sponsor. Vurox will be entertaining potential clients as the hounds rush by. Would you like some corporate hospitality for your storefront?

Race naming rights are automatically available to all kennel/owners who enter dogs in the Dog Racing Weekend, and to anyone else who wants to sponsor a race, with appropriate 'considerations' to the right officials.

The Dog Festival is proud to announce that Golden Cross Security of Vortiaganica will be our security partners for the prestigious Dog Racing Weekend. The highly experienced security firm will work with our own services to provide such security as protection of VIPs and dignitaries at the event, crowd control stewardship, prevention of electronic espionage such as phone hacking and bet rigging, health and safety signposting and Rabies Control for incoming tourists and their dogs.

Media Partners

Postby The Golden Tamarind » Mon Jul 11, 2011 11:41 am

The Dog Festival is proud to announce that Sports Programming International Network, the prestige media organisation in New Azura, will be our exclusive media partners for the International Dog Festival Racing Weekend.

SPIN's evolutionary sports package gives viewers from across the globe the chance to watch sporting events never before possible in their lifetimes. With inventive packaging deals and subscription-based fees as premiums, SPIN can bring every sport imaginable under the sun to the comfort of their living rooms.

The Tamarindian Collective Sports Syndicates considers this a huge coup for the International Dog Weekend that could well ensure the future of the event as a sustainable annual event for the international community.
