A Little Bit About Rugby In Unitopolis

With a strong Irish community and thriving French and English communities, rugby has a strong following in Unitopolis. The national team, nicknamed the Auks, are made up of players from the 10-team professional rugby league in Unitopolis - The Unitopolitan Rugby League. Large clubs like Athletic Stanza & Zamba Zebras basically dominate the league and usually the few small-club players who shine are bought by the bigger clubs. Rugby is probably the 3rd most popular sport in Unitopolis, after football and Gaelic Football. Support for the team is already quite high but if they manage to do well the entire nation will be watching.

[From UTN News @ 6]

The Unitopolis squad landed in Swartaz last night ahead of the 17th Rugby World Cup, for which Unitopolis will be taking part. The Auk's were involved in the ill-fated Rugby World Cup 15, which was cancelled after a match-fixing scandal a few years back. The squad is entirely made up of players from the Unitopolitan Rugby Championship, and coach Steven Montague reckons it's a great way for the players to make the step up into the league's of other nations;

"Obviously all the best clubs from around the world will have their eye on this World Cup, and I hope that it's our guys who stand out and put themselves on every club's list of transfer targets.

"The Unitopolitan league isn't the top level, and most of these guys deserve better. In the old days, the guys like Shaun Coppell and Alan Skreet playing for small teams, would have to engineer a move to Stanza or Zamba to make the step up. Hopefully with this World Cup we'll be putting our players on the market and developing them into real stars.

"I'm realistic about our goal here though. No one in the team is going to be making any world-record moves, that's a fact. What I do expect, or rather, demand, is that every player who I send out on the pitch gives their all, and shows the world that when it comes to rugby; we are not a small nation."

Also available for interview was scrum-half George Surinibo, who just three weeks ago wrapped up the league title for Athletic Stanza with a brilliant individual try. Will we see more of that over the next month?

"I don't know. Hopefully, but the main thing for all of us isn't about great tries or even scoring tries, for us it's about developing our skills so that at the next World Cup, we'll be even better, and the one after that, until Unitopolis can be considered a powerhouse in the sport. Even mighty oaks come from small acorns, and at the moment this World Cup campaign is just a small acorn."

Although the players are realistic, every rugby fan in Unitopolis will be hoping the Auks return with more than just their pride.

Island news!

Khytennia Arives in Swataz to defend title.

Then Khytennia national rugby team touched down today in Göteborg in preparation for the 17th world cup, where Khytennia will be defending the world title, the first world title Khytennia has won in any sport, the team was greeted with a large travelling fans (The Islander Alliance as they call themselves) where the team took time to sign autographs and more importantly, talk to us about the upcoming completion.
Khytennia dominated last year with a heavy pack, with the driving mauls being hard to stop in some incidences, we asked the Khytennian Coach Jamie Felix what tactics he will be using in the upcoming competition.

“this year we will have a much heavyer pack then last year, if thats even possible! We are looking to dominate the same way we did last time. Are backs are getting good pace as well, i am full confident that we can lift the title again”

We also spoke with the Captain of the team, Ryan Jaxon, to get his views on the world cup and Khytennia’s chances.

“Are chances are very Very good” he said to us whilst meeting the fans, “ We are stronger, faster, and more eager then the other teams here we can easily get the cup back again, and the guys know that when we get back out on the field we are going bring are best game and take it to whoever we play, it’s going to take a lot to beat us!”

Khytennia have only made one change from the last world cup, with the new Flanker, Dario Kazin entering the team, he has been impressive in club rugby with hard tackles and also the fast flanker in Khytennia, but has not made any international starts for the team, which is a risky move, however Kazin seemed to be just happy he was included in the team.

“It’s a dream to play for your country, I am extremely happy that I was in the team, I won’t let my country down and I will play the best rugby I can.”

Khytennia play the Polar Islandstates ( first timers) in their opening game, not many would bet against Khytennia for that match, the coach only had a few words about this team.

“In reality, the Polar Islandstates are not going to know what hit them, the only advantage i can see is that they will be used to the cold weather, but that’s not going to matter”

Island news will be following all of the Rugby action, join us for all your world cup news.

Tommi Jakinen and the Kulverintian team were treated to whistling and jeers from the massed Swartazian fans who had gathered in the centre of Göteborg to see them get off the coach. Tommi smiled, he knew that this would only spur his team on to really piss off the thousands of Swartazian fans who would be watching. The event being in Swartaz, Kulverint's closest ally and Northern neighbour, was another good thing for the team. Swartaz is the only country Kulverintian fans are allowed to enter unless the team is in the final, so this time the team would be emotionally charged as ever.

Tommi walked over to his advisors, who told him that he was to go to a press conference immediately, and that he must pick 2 players to join him, he chose Wilhelmus Farransza and Jeroen Berdoas.

"Tommi, last time the Kulverintian team came from nowhere before the cup to being almost certainly the strongest team in the tournament, and the shock final result was probably not what you deserved in the end. How does losing so narrowly in the last cup motivate you for this one?"

"Well, firstly I'd like to thank you for calling us last time's strongest team, I certainly thought we were, and I guess that by the final we were expected to win. The pressure was on us, and we floundered. Obviously, it was difficult to start with, but we've had 4 years now with the Kulverintian internal Rugby Union Premier League only getting stronger, and all of our players have been performing well. We are motivated by our victories last time over some very strong opponents, and I think that our only aim can be for victory this time around."

"Wilhelmus, you were probably the name everyone remembers from last time, with a lot of tries scored. Have you needed any training ahead of this?"

"Well, of course we've trained, but Tommi's given us all our own regime specific to our needs. We've practiced acclimitising to weather conditions, going from Saunas immediately into the snow capped mountain regions, so we're well prepared for anything that can get thrown at us here, north of the border. I will just keep doing what I've been doing and score as much as possible. Especially if we draw Swartaz at some stage."

"Jeroen, you haven't been in great form over the pat 4 years, and you nearly weren't even picked for the side. Do you think you're ready to give everything you can again?"

"Well, if you remember, it was my drop goal that helped us through both the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals last time, so there's no doubting what my ability is. I think the main problem has been lack of motivation for me. In the Kulverintian league it's always either KNVB or Kulverint Schkots, so it's not too interesting, so there is not worldwide coverage, but here I have a chance to show myself on the world stage once again. I'm fully motivated, and fully fit."

"Thank you for your time."

"You're welcome."

The trio then posed for some photos, before joining the rest of the squad for more heavy training ready for their first game, against Civil Citizenry.

Mytanar Rugby Union World Cup 17 Roster
# Name Age Position Club Team Other Details.
1 Manville Lapointe 27 Loosehead Prop Nasto Islanders Important in the Scrum, most pressure comes from him.
2 Gaspar Leroux 23 Hooker Nasto Islanders Good tackler, is thin and short - not the best built for a hooker, but does get a surprising amount of tries.
3 Vlado Vukelic 28 Tighthead Prop Club Ebor '02 Probably the man who gets the most sin-bins.
4 Nikola Stolar 25 Lock (Second Row) Club Ebor '02 Quick, tough and finds gaps in defences.
5 Enes Gunnarsson 26 Lock (Second Row) Thessia Jets National Team Captain, gets plenty of tries.
6 Marco Roth 28 Blindside-Flanker (Back Row) Nasto Islanders Tall and strong, good at stopping quick runners.
7 Metody Sajak 31 Openside-Flanker (Back Row) Thessia Jets Lacks pace and could be a weakness, but he is a rugby legend and does get quite a few tries.
8 Bogoljub Kolar 23 Number 8 (Back Row) Club Ebor '02 Tall, strong number 8 who pushes the scrum onwards from the back.
9 Piotr Chevin 22 Scrum-Half Racing Cassia '78 Born and bred in the traditional rugby town of Cassia, good passer and very quick player, slips between defenders like they aren't there.
10 Omar Nijholt 26 Fly-Half Club Ebor '02 Very accurate kicker, was one of the players that pushed Club Ebor '02 onto 3rd place in the Croix-Bleue Premiership, very good tackler too.
11 Miroslaw Tyril 29 Inside-Centre Racing Cassia '78 Strong and quick, a defensive nightmare as he just ploughs through tackles - gets a few tries.
12 Ingpor Evarsson 23 Outside-Centre Thessia Jets Record try scorer with 10 tries in his national team career.
13 Orkeny Makai 25 Left-Wing Nasto Islanders Very good defensively, tackles well and has good strength too, perhaps lacks a bit of pace.
14 Tuomo Pentilla 21 Right-Wing Racing Cassia '78 Pentilla is youthful, quick and full of energy - he could run all day and should get quite a few tries.
15 Bergmundur Jakobsson 21 Fullback Nasto Islanders Strong and tall fullback, a very good last-line of defence as he tackles well and is quick.
16 Tomas Deichmann 24 Loosehead Prop Racing Cassia '78 Strong and powerful prop, he doesn't have pace at all - but is known to carry defenders on his back as he battles his way towards the try-line.
17 Benjamin Devec 20 Hooker Club Ebor '02 Quick and strong hooker, he tackles well but is perhaps a bit undersized.
18 Yuri Goralev 23 Tighthead Prop Thessia Jets Surprisingly quick for a Prop, but still retains the strength needed for his position.
19 Wladimir Derkowski 20 Lock (Second Row) Club Ebor '02 Another quick Lock, he is known to burst through defences.
20 Gerhardt Spiv 18 Lock (Second Row) Nasto Islanders Tall and still growing, youthful prospect.
21 Haris Talizhdazic 21 Blindside-Flanker (Back Row) Racing Cassia '78 The Destroyer, finds holes and surges through them - if they aren't there, he'll run over a man to get to the try-line.
22 Boris Kerznikov 20 Openside-Flanker (Back Row) Racing Cassia '78 Racing Cassia are producing lots of good young players and the rugby town has another in Kerznikov, fast and strong, gets a few tries.
23 Yurij Sanderskiy 25 Number 8 (Back Row) Thessia Jets Good tackler, could be a bit too weak for a number 8 - but can catch players with his pace.
24 Andrey Dalan 23 Scrum-Half Thessia Jets Pacy, good quick hands and good at kicking too.
25 Lukas Wimerz 21 Fly-Half Thessia Jets Good long-range kicker, he gets plenty of drop goals too - but is also a good passer and tackler.
26 Rene Tyko 22 Inside-Centre Club Ebor '02 His brother plays football for Cosmopolitan Cote-Ast, pretty interesting family.
27 Mikael Terddel 26 Outside-Centre Nasto Islanders Strong, better defensively than attacking. Normally brought on late to hold a lead.
28 Viktor Nadlenen 19 Left-Wing Racing Cassia '78 He's a decent kicker, but is also a good future prospect. Keep an eye on him.
29 Piotr Tronchowski 17 Right-Wing Miago Rockets Playing in the Mytanar Amateureliga, he'll hope to catch the attention of a Croix-Bleue Premiership team, pacy and gets a lot of tries.
30 Rafael Verdat 22 Fullback Racing Cassia '78 Pace, pure pace. Rips through defences and they then don't see him for dust.

First XV are the players above the line, three key player bolded.

Saugeais Sports Briefs
Rugby Union team ready to begin World Cup

The Saugeais Eagles Rugby Union team has arrived in Swartaz today in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Many are speculating whether or not they can compete, given that most of the members are bordering on the old side in terms of rugby standards. The average age of the starters is 32 years, but coach Stephen Strauss believes that experience is more important than anything. "It's all about how well they know the game, and these players have been with us since the foundation of the SRUC (Saugeais Rugby Union Club). Yes, while few players are getting to be worn down from the constant hitting, we do have some young players that can step up and become playmakers as well. So I'm not that worried about our chances in this Cup." Jean Martin, 37 and starting fullback, has stated in a press conference yesterday that these will be his last competitive matches ever in rugby. "I feel that if I go any longer that my legs with one day just seize up and I can't even make it to the pitch. So I officially announce that after this Cup I will retire from the sport of rugby." So they have that emotion riding on this tournament.

Saugeais, after all this time of non-competition, still sits at #14 in the world. Looking at the group Saugeais has to face, it is pretty fortunate they have an easy schedule ahead of them. Along with the Eagles in Group I are, Kazzoria, Kernansquillec, and Cyborg Holland, and only Kazzoria may give Saugeais a run for its money. The other two nations have very poor rugby squads, with this being their first international tournament ever, so having no experience could possibly hurt them in the long run. Looking at the other groups, the National Journal makes this prediciton:

Group A: Swartaz, New Palmouth, Mangolana, Camerania

Group B: Sorthern Northland, The Babbage Islands, Silver Beach, AmandaRosica

Group C: Kulverint, Civil Citizenry, AN ERA NO MORE, Braxil

Group D: Khytenna, Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk, Polar Islandstates, Encelladus

Group E: Unitopolis, Colmark, Peisandros, Khabarovsk Krai

Group F: Cotdelapoms, Wadomia, Wolfmanne, Threepenny Bits

Group G: Mytannion, Chetkosk, Azerbaistan, Wellington

Group H: Virabia, Chenkorya, Darmen, Zeraxia

Group I: Saugeais, Kazzoria, Cyborg Holland, Kernansquillec

Group J: Delaclava, The Kiaser Colonies, Kalumba, South Bucks

Group K: Voerdeland, The Kangaroo Republic, Rhodesiah, Commonwealth of Isles

Frédéric Jolicœur has named his squad for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Swartaz. Not surprisingly it is made up entirely of players from the Croix Bleue Premiership. Expect Johann Racicot to handle most of the kicking duties on this team, unless Luc-Alex Bédard is playing. It features a handful of changes from the last squad.

Forwards:
1 Curtis Wickham (Albionpool Druids)
2 Léon Régis (Newport Ghosts)
3 Serge St-Cyr (Newport Ghosts)
4 Thierry Bizier (Albionpool Druids)
5 Abdoulie Goän (Alouettes d'Outremont)

Colmar is a sporting nation. Many sports are enjoyed, played and watched by hundreds of thousands, or even millions. However, none quite compare with the emotional attachment Colmarkians have to the sport of rugby. "More national obsession that national sport" is a quote attributed to former President Thomas Jackson, and it certainly has a ring of truth to it. The frenzy that engulfed the nation during Colmark's run to third place in the last Rugby World Cup was something to behold, as the country shut down to watch Colmark's semi-final defeat. Mistakes were made in that competition, big mistakes, and coach Mike Carlson was shown the door for them. The Colmarkian team that comes to Swartaz have a steely determination about them. The entire team are under fire following a sub-par 6 nations performance, and coach Jonathan Reeve has decided to stick to his guns "There were a couple of dissapointing performances in the 6 nations, but the side is going in the right direction. I am confident that we can win in Swartaz with the side we have."
And how will the Bears go about this task? Colmark's strength lies in their power game, not just from their huge pack who can marmelise an unsuspecting opponent's scrummage, but also their driving mauls, aggressive rucking and unstoppable crash balls. Adam Harbaugh is always at the centre of the action when Colmark are going forward, and once he builds up a head of steam, he is difficult to stop as the 6 foot 8, 19 stone man is not just a lump, he is a modern day athlete and can sprint, catch, pass and step with the best of them. It is also noteworthy that in skipper William Peel and fellow lock Graham Hunter Colmark have reliable lineout options who are a menace to the opposition and unstoppable on their own ball. James Stevenson's goal kicking is metronomic and with Colmark being a side who force the opposition to give away penalties, he should end the tournament with a healthy points tally. Scrum half Tobin Harrison is gritty and effective, and his work rate makes him a considerably better player than his often more talented opponents, while the back three are fast and in open space will leave their opponents in the dust. Colmark's weakness lies in the one-dimensional shape of their play, as there is little imagination or flair on display. If Colmark are bested in the pack, they will lose. The three quarters look vulnerable and Charles Rocknan seems to be past his best. The weaknesses can be covered, but will they cost Colmark a key win?
So what does the tournament hold for the incumbent bronze medalists? Colmark's group stage opponents are Khabarovsk Krai, Unitopolis and Peisandros, all unranked. Unitopolis look a reasonable outfit, and may well cause a few problems, but the other two look weak in the pack and this will be seriously exploited by Colmark. Though there will be a couple of tough games, Colmark should reach the knock-out stages with little trouble. Once there, Colmark should be more than a match for anyone they come up against. There is a very real possibility that Colmark will go all the way, but sport is a funny thing, so let us not tempt the mocker gods!

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Meanwhile, back in Salisbury...

John Smith ripped a copy of the "Daily Salisbury" in half.

"THEY PUT US AS **WHAT?!?**" Smith screamed at his Minister of Sport. President Smith had worked hard to re-establish Rhodesiah as a power to regain former British Colonial glory, yet in the Rugby World Cup his sables had been picked by Saugeais experts to finish third in Group K behind heavily favoured Voerdeland and unranked Kangaroo Republic. "This is a total f***ing outrage!" Smith screamed at his minister, David Tsinvrai, who was too busy dodging projectiles from his president to offer his two cents on such a matter.

President Smith reached forward into his desk to peel out a dusty bottle of Salisbury 1902. Pouring himself a rather liberal dosage before clutching his old crystal glass with despair.

"David my boy... where have the glory days gone when we walked hand in hand with an apartheid-era South Africa? When things were 'wrong' but they WORKED?!?"

As Smith drank in his sorrow, he looked at his roster for the Rugby World Cup, begging for an answer on how to return a once great nation in darkest Africa into a world powerhouse in years to come.

"Third in group K..." Smith mumbled in his drunken stupor several hours later "...we'll show those bastards when we top the whole bloody group." as he trailed off into his slumber.

President John Smith called his captain, Danny Dinha into his office at 3 am, the day of the opening game in Rhodesiah history.

"Danny my boy," Smith opened, whispering through rum and whiskey soaked breath "both the country and I, personally, need you at this time."

"Anything sir." The sable captain replied, having been the first captain appointed for the Rhodesiah national rugby team, let alone a black captain on a team full of whites.

Smith leaned forward, almost to whisper into his player's ear in his stupor "I need you to whoop those kangaroo boys asses tomorrow. Show the world that we're here to make a name for ourselves. Nobody better than a TRUE African boy to lead the rest of... not only our team... but the entire continent to glory the pitch today."

The captain solemnly nodded and took a few steps back... before his president stood and placed his arm on the player's shoulder "I have faith in you my boy." The president mumbled before falling back onto his bed and passing out in his drunken haze. The sable captain knew what was expected... and he was not about to let his country down.

In Zeraxia.....

Wulf was sitting with the coach of Team Zeraxia."Coach, your team is the underdog in this situation."Wulf said, after lighting his pipe."Nobody thinks we're gonna win."Wulf said, and blew out a puff of smoke."Because of this,I want YOU AND YOUR TEAM TO GO OUT THERE,AND WHIP THE OTHER TEAM'S CANDY ASS!!!!!!Wulf barked, and sat back down in to the plastic, dirty chair. The coach knew there was only one thing to say."Yes sir."he said proudly, nodded, and walked off.

The coach was speaking to his players."Ok men,it's time to talk."the coach said."As you know,we are the underdog right now.So I want an upset. An Upset!I know every single one of you has been in the military,so I think you can win it all.But I don't want you to just win,I WANT YOU TO BEAT THE OTHER TEAM SO BADLY,THAT THE NEXT TIME WE PLAY,THE OTHER TEAM WILL PISS THEIR PANTS!!!!!!!"the coach yelled at the top of his lungs. The players were use to getting yelled at,but not by their coach."Now gimme a hell yeah if you're ready to play!"the coach shouted.
"HELL YEAH!!!"all of the players yelled, and then were told that they should go prepare for the game.

"Did you talk to them?"Wulf asked."Hell yes."Replied the coach."Were they energized?"Wulf inquired."Very much so."The coach responded."Good,very good.You may leave"Wulf told the coach."Yes sir."Said the coach,and left.

James Watson woke up and made his way to the windows to open the curtains. It had been a week after he announced that he would not be playing football in the league and possibly the next world cup, so as to be able to play in the Rugby World Cup. It had been a very stressful week also. He was getting very mixed reviews. His football team Never Miss a Beat Athletic seemed very cold towards him and avoided him at training. He was also receiving death threats from people in the post. He also received three bombs in the post. on the other hand the rugby comunity treated him as a hero. Luckily rugby was the main sport of the nation which meant he was on most peoples good side. He opened the curtains and sighed. ''For Violets sake. They spray painted the windows. And with such bad language. The hotel managers not going to be happy with this,'' he said closing them again. ''Good thing the cup is being held in Swartaz. Probably get stoned at the match now. Wheres my passport?''
''James! Breakfast, come on.''
''Coming Matthew. Now where is it? Ah here.''
After a rather hurried breakfast, due to the shouts from football fans from across the room (and the occasional thrown bread roll), James went up to his room to finish packing. ''Shirts, socks, trousers, kit, shorts, boots, gum shield, sun cream, hat, swimming gear and a jacket. Right thats that. Matthew! Hurry up we need to go soon. Half the team are waiting.''
''Coming.'' Matthew replied. A loud honk came from outside as the team bus pulled up outside. Minutes later as the team filled the bus coach Micheal Connors rushed in at the last minute just as the bus was pulling out. When they arrived at Highroyds International Airport, Connors led them into a private room. Inside was Kaiser Chief Andrew White and the Minister for Sport along with other important members of parliment and people. ''Hello men. We would all like you to relax and have some snacks before you leave for the cup. Just to wish you all good luck.'' said Andrew White. As the team lined up to meet him and the other guests, James Watson scanned the room for football supporters. Luckily there were none, unless Andrew White was one. For the next hour the team chated with the guests and ate. After they were led out to the departure gate to a specially decorated Kiaser Airways plane.
Once the team were all on the coach made an annoncement.
''Now Lads i dont want to see you up all night. Enjoy the luxury for now but Swartaz is a Long way away and a couple timezones ahead so you need to sleep for longer than usuall. Im not having you all dead tired by the time we are there. So no coffee or tea or caffine. Thats all.''
''Least you'll be able to sleep now that theres no football fans here right James?''
''Give it a ''rest'' Angus. Ha ha.'' The plan began to move and the team began their traditional traveling song,

''Here we go, here we go, here we go!
On our way to win the cup, win the cup!
And we'll bring it back to 'Royds
Rugby World Cup!
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray for The Kiaser's!''
