NIFT Orean Masters (tennis) RP and scores thread

Postby Liventia » Thu Aug 06, 2009 9:45 am

This is the RP thread for the NIFT Orean Masters, which begin Saturday.

Here is a list of entrants. Please check to make sure all your players are on this list and your three-letter code is correct (for Newtopolise, NEW is not possible as it is used by Newmanistan, so NWT was used). Mixed doubles — this event was not held in Kemball Islands. Only one pair had any sort of NIFT doubles' experience, Cristian Obolo/Marisa Veloso of Sargossa, as Obolo gained points from the men's doubles event in Kemball Islands. They have therefore been awarded the first seed (the only seed) and will play the first match of the event.

Explanation
Men's singles
The 52 participants will drawn into 13 groups of four, with the ten seeds all in different groups. There will be a single round-robin tournament, with the top two in each group and the four third-placed players with the best records (tiebreak: W-L, Sets won-lost difference, Sets won, Games won-lost difference) moving on to the last 32. If any seeds still exist, they will be drawn by their seeding, and not by group stage play.

Men's doubles
The 20 pairs will play in a single-round robin tournament in four groups of five, with the top two pairs in each group moving on to play in the quarter-finals. Each seed is placed into their own group. If any seeds still exist, they will be drawn by seeding, and not group stage play.

Women's singles
The 36 participants will be drawn into nine groups of four, with the nine seeds all in different groups. It will be a single round-robin tournament, with the nine group winners and seven runners-up with the best records moving on to the last sixteen. If any seeds still exist, they will be drawn by their seeding, and not group stage play.

Women's doubles
The six seeds are exempt from a qualifying tournament. The remaining eight pairs will play in two groups of four, in a single round-robin tournament, with the two pairs winning their groups joining the six seeds in the quarter finals.

Mixed doubles
The ten pairs will play in two groups of five in a round-robin tournament, with the top two pairs in each group playing in the semifinals.

The draw will follow.

Unreal faces off Newmanistan in groups in Liventia!

Yes its tennis again, the second of the new NIFT opens. This one goes by the name of the Orean Masters. Orean is a massive city, truly an amazing sight to behold, but its the tennis we are after, so lets look at the groups!

GROUP 3: Nguyễns Khac Suu [UN#] (3), Adam Nguyen [TAE], Brendan Holt [NEW], Bob Shnail [SHL]

I doubt Nguyễns will find too much difficulty getting through this group. The players from Taeshan and Shellipose shouldn't bee too much of an issue for the player who came into this tournament with a third seed. The other player in the group is Brendan Holt. He hardly had a great time in Kemball losing to Iqbaal Mansour of Queer Poco el Mono Ara in the groups before being knocked out by some bizarre elimination format. He could potentially be a threat but the world number three should have no major issue in making sure he gets the result he needs.

GROUP 5: Huong Muoi [UN#] (5), George Harlington [CRE], Chris Terrell [NEW], Hugo Jukina [DFU]

Huong Muoi has some slightly less well known competition is his group. Creestahlyian player George Harlington is the unknown entity apparently being only #44 in his home nation, well we don't select them. Again a Newmanistani player came up, this time Chris Terrell. Muoi can be fairly confident of this match having beaten Terrell 7-5 3-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 in the Kemball Islands. Uiric player Hugo Jukina makes up the group. Jukina was another player Muoi beat in the last open, having won 4-6 7-6 3-6 6-1 6-4. The draw will clearly give a good level on confidence to Huong Muoi who will be looking to do better than the quarter final finish in the last tournament after being knocked out by the eventual champion.

GROUP 4: Michael Johnson [NEW] (4), Tim Cooper [NEW], Le Kha Manh [UN#], Greenwich Jones [PAL]

Ok, Le Kha Manh didn't perform excellently in the Kemball Islands, but he is still very young and the experience will surely do him good, hopefully to the level to which he can do some real damage. Greenwich Jones of Palmouth doesn't look like a major threat to the nifty youngster but yet another two players from Newmanistan could. Michael Johnson especially. Johnson having been knocked out at the quarter-final stage in Kemball Islands. Le Kha Manh can still draw strengh that from the fact that last time, he lost to the finalist Marcus Kay. This time, he has more than one chance at the competition. His close loss to Kay proves that he can compete at this lvel, so it would be unwise for the Newmanistanis to underestimate the youngster's ability. Lets focus a bit on the other player, the other guy from Newmanistan. Tim Cooper also went out at the group stage in the Kemball Islands (which is all we have to go on, really). He went out not to a finalist, but to the Taeshite, Matt Cawfield. This is hardly a proof of a difficult group, but Le Kha must focus on the games ahead if he is to achieve his potential.

GROUP 13: Jacob Daniels [PAL], Trương Van Thieu [UN#], Darkki Nepaisale [DEL], Winston Lippmann [TAT]

Right, the last player in the mens singles (which start first). Trương Van Thieu doesn't have a Newmanistani to play (well, not in the singles anyway). Instead he has a player from Palmouth (oh dear) and a player from Tatuape and we don't know what to think of them yet. The other player may be slightly more of an issue for the Unrealish number 5. Darkki Nepaisale of Delaclave may not be quite such an easy pushover, if only for his nationality (he didn't get past the group stage in Kemball either).

So, it should be a fairly easy first round in the mens singles for the players from Unreal229, wins all round. Of course, nothing ever seems to go quite to plan, so who knows. Either way, 229 deserves to prosper this time.

So far so good, but in the future could you try to put winners first? The sometimes def. and sometimes l. setup is confusing and unconventional.

"So I can have an extension?"

"Yes, but I am not sure for how long. Your unit needs you out there, Mr. Kay."

"Yeah, yeah, thanks anyway. And don't call me again."

Marcus set down the phone, relieved that he would be able to continue to play tennis, at least for now. His army unit had been called back into service a month ago, but Marcus had managed to escape with a "cultural exemption", meaning he contributed to society in a better way than with a gun. However, he had no guarantee that his exemtion would last, as tennis was not yet a widely recognized sport in Tyrrin.

Marcus was trying to change that. He came in second in the first NIFT tournament, the Kemball Islands Open. He had already won his first match against WInston Winchell of Tatuape. Also in his group were Harry America and Roger Backembaum.

Marcus had been ready for this tournament, even if he was not sure he would be able to play. He worked out extensively, and did lots of endurance training, as stamina in these tournaments was just as important as skill. Both of these attributes were on display against Winchell, where the match lasted several hours.

He had also hired a professional coach, Bobby Brannen. Brannen was one of the founding members of Tyrrinian tennis. Marcus didn't need as much training as far as skill went, but he did need connections if he was to continue to play, and he hoped that Bobby could provide this for him.

The sole survivor
Image
Billy Reid returns a serve in a day that saw 4 Valipacian singles players lose

After watching four fellow Valipacians and friends fall in the opening match of the NIFT Orean Masters tournament, Billy Reid was determined not to complete the sweep. Reid bounced back from a first set loss to defeat Mikael Vorgan 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6. The first set was hotly contested, but Reid managed to win the second, and after stumbling in the third set, never looked back, completely dominating the last two sets.

"I was really happy for him," his coach and trainer Joe Phillips said afterwards. "He had been working really hard to prepare for this tournament, and it was a shame that none of his friends advanced. He's a good kid, very consistent, and he completely works his a-- off to improve. This was a huge match for him, and while his serve wasn't overpowering, he did a great job keeping the ball in play.

After the match, Reid appeared happy about his performance and the chance to move on to the next round. "Now I need to focus on preparing for my doubles match with my brother, Isaac. After that, I can prepare for the next round." He noted, however, that "tennis is tennis, so in a way I will be consistently preparing myself for both upcoming matches." Isaac and Billy will play Dubait Horsenhower and Kevin Martinez when the doubles portion begins.

Would appreciate if you kept OOC to a short line in an RP post or in the tournament discussion thread. And, for what it's worth I'll spell it out in full then. Because I don't want to have to change their orders around from the posted schedule order for simplicity's sake.

RP cutoff for Day 2.

EVERYBODY WATCHED THE WINSTON BOYS SHOW

by Vladimir Engels
Script for the Prussian News, at Hegel TV, channel 3.

A great underdog 3-2 made Winston Boys win their match agaisnt Algera-Flakerson in NIFT Orean Masters. Lippman was perfect and the mouthy Winchell made some mistakes, but won alone the 5th set.

Arendt-Mead lost, 2-0. It was the second defeat for Arendt since Mead won at the singles. Now, everybody is looking for the great green star double, Sartre and de Beauvoir. Let's wish a good luck for them.

Reid Brothers roll at Orean
Image
Billy Reid works to make a return

The Reid brothers have dominated thus far, winning their first of their doubles matches 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 against Dubait Horsenhower and Kevin Martinez, and continuing on to win their second match 3-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, 3-6 against Cristian Obolo and Ivan Bolanos. Meanwhile, the Valipacian female tennis duo has fared no worse, winning their first match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) against Harriet Arendt and Maggie Mead. Anna Harper was not as lucky, however, losing her second match in a row in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Both Billy Reid and the female duo of Nicole Wade and Katherine Holloway will be in action again tomorrow as the attempt to qualify for the Masters tournament. Reid is undefeated in three matches so far, when his doubles and singles game records are combined. "I'm really proud of him," his brother and doubles partner Harry Reid said. "It's tough to reach the top of your profession, no matter what that profession is. I really believe that he has the chance to do just that."

As the tournament rolls on in Liventia, it will be interesting to see how all of the Valipacian players fare. Zachary Thomas and Jack Richardson are also active tomorrow, playing in their second singles match. They will need to be at their best to bounce back from their first match losses, but as one retired Valipacian tennis player said, "It is very rare that a Valipacian player will roll over for a second consecutive game. For whatever reason, they might perform poorly in the first game, but they will almost always get it together for the second.

TATUAPEAN DOUBLES' DAY AT NIFT OREAN MASTERS

by Vladimir Engels
Script for the Prussian News, at Hegel TV, channel 3.

A huge win for Sartre-de Beauvoir and for the Winston Boys was celebrate all over Tatuape. Also, Arendt won her first match at woman's single, with a tired de Beavoir and Mead losing their games.

Sartre was slighty happy. "In tennis, the limit, really, is the win. We must be free from winning one game to win the Masters", said Tatuapean greatest tennis star. Now, all Tatuapean teams debuted and, step-by-step, getting a better place at NIFT Orean Masters.

WINSTON BOYS AND WOMAN'S DOUBLE DAY

by Vladimir Engels
Script for the Prussian News, at Hegel TV, channel 3.

In singles competition, the Winston Boys won once again at NIFT Orean Masters. Lippmann was very proud that Tatuapean Public Opinion about him is increasing. Winchell was very happy too, but spend his time mocking another Sartre's defeat at singles.

Mead-Arendt won their match, double 4-6, and both girls are very confident that they'll made a great debut in international tennis at NIFT Orean Masters. "We are very fond of playing together and hopeful to make our way in darkness for the title", said Arendt.

THE ROCKET REPORT

LIVENTIA OPEN UP AND RUNNING

Orean, Liventia- The Orean Masters is underway, and so far Newmanistanian athletes have experienced varyling levels of success. As was the case in Kemball Island, our best performances appear to be occurring in women’s singles. All four Newmanistanian ladies are through to the next round, led by Lauren Martin, who won the Kemball Island Open. Lauren is truly hitting her best stride of late, we saw signs of this before the NIFT was formed and it is great to see that carrying over into these events. “Everything is going well.” Lauren said, “You can never take anything for granted for rest on your past accomplishments, and I hope that I never do that. I don’t know a bunch about my opponent, and I wasn’t going to let her be the one who knocked me out. I will face stronger opposition later, for sure. Brittany and Ashley Hearn advance as well as Shannon Mayer. In the Kemball Island Open, the only Newmanistanian women who lost in singles lost to other Newmanistanian women. With this early success, we are likely establishing ourselves as the country to beat in women’s singles. Mayer is quite happy about that, “I think we got a good shot, but if I were to win, I hope my name is spelled right on the trophy.” she said, referring to herself as being listed as Shannon Meyer, and not Mayer, on the official score sheets. The ladies have yet to play in doubles, and are expected to do well when they finally hit the court.

As for the men, three of the four Newmanistanians remain alive with only Tim Cooper having been eliminated. Even though we did not have as much success on the male side of the ledger in Kemball Island, we still expect to do well and our athletes do expect to have gotten as far as they have in the opening days of the tournament. Brendan Holt had quite a battle in his match with Adam Nguyen, but once again it was Newmanistan prevailing over Taeshan as Holt defeated Nguyen in five sets, rebounding from a 6-0 loss in the opening set. “Obviously I started poorly,” he said, “But I was able to make the adjustments over the course of the match and fortunately there is more then one set in tennis.” Both doubles pairs were eliminated, but Cooper and Chris Terrell were just happy to finally play together. “Maybe the excitement of actually being able to play is what did us in.” said Terrell. Overall, the tournament is moving along very nicely, and we will be hoping to being you more coverage as it progresses.
