Ad’ihani Pentathlon World Series - champions posted

Postby Liventia » Fri Apr 29, 2011 5:57 am

For more information, see NSwiki.

The Ad’ihani Pentathlon Sport Union has announced its intention to organise an Ad’ihani Pentathlon World Series event to complement its domestic Liventian and Ad’ihani competitions, building on the success of the event at the Sixth Winter Olympics in Ashton, Krytenia, where Kitomi Hamazuki (Liventia) won the women's event and Arnaldur Þorbjarnarson (Sorthern Northland) won the men's event.

Ad’ihani pentathlon is a winter event with four component sports: alpine skiing, ski jumping, speed skating and biathlon for men; with skeleton replacing ski jumping for women. Competitors compete in all four events (representing five disciplines, as biathlon is itself a combined event) over two days and earn points based on their performances in each event. The athlete with the best points total wins.

For the World Series, the APSU will award titles for each individual event, as well as the best men's and women's competitors overall through the four events, and a nations' trophy. Each nation is allowed to send two men and two women to the World Series.

Scorination will be done using xkoranate and my Ad’ihani pentathlon files. Instead of having a single modifier for each athlete, each athlete will now have individual modifiers for each component event, totalling not more than 2.5 points across the four components.

In each component event, athletes may have no more than 1.0 points and no less than 0.0 points. The total across all four components must not exceed 2.5 points (or an average of 0.625 points per component).

Please use the following format (AS = alpine skiing; SJ = ski jumping (men)/SK = skeleton (women); SS = speed skating; BI = biathlon)
Nation: Example (EXA)
Men's entrants:
1. Joe Bloggs (AS 1.0, SJ 0.3, SS 0.8, BI 0.4)
2. Jack Bloggs (AS 0.7, SJ 0.6, SS 0.6, BI 0.6)
Women's entrants:
1. Jane Bloggs (AS 0.3, SK 1.0, SS 1.0, BI 0.2)
2. June Bloggs (AS 0.0, SK 0.5, SS 1.0, BI 1.0)

Puppet limits: Athlete entries from a maximum of two nations per user, and hosting candidate entries from no more than one nation per user.

Signups close May 8 at 01:00 UTC (2 am in the UK; 9 pm on the US east coast).

Finalised schedule
8 May: Ashton, Krytenia Men's Day 1 Women's Day 1
9 May: Ashton Men's Day 2 Women's Day 2

I'd enjoy taking part in this but I'm really not feeling very NS-y right now. So I make no promises as to RP.

Men’s
David Thundersnow (AS 1.0, SJ 0.3 SS 0.7, BI 0.5)
Bu'Baexiði Leif Peepae (AS 1.0, SJ 1.0, SS 0.5, BI 0.0)

Women’s
Laryssa Von Fantastictrousers (AS 1.0, SK 0.5, SS 0.4, BI 0.6)
Kaitlyn Hanky-Panky-Nohow Oboewarbler (AS 1.0, SK 1.0, SS 0.3, BI 0.2)

Host venue
We'd like to enter a bid, but I don't think I'll be able come up with RP details for a few days - so if possible, we'd like to angle for the May 15 competition day, to give me time to get it together. The venue will of course be Greschmeier, home of Quodite winter sports.

Ad’ihani pentathlon returns to Ashton

Ashton, KRYTENIA— The city of Ashton, Krytenia, was home to the VI NationStates Winter Olympic Games, where for the first time an international Ad’ihani pentathlon competition took place. Now, almost a year later, it again welcomes the top competitors on the Ad’ihani pentathlon circuit as it prepares to host the first of four events on the inaugural Ad’ihani Pentathlon World Series (APWS).

For many of the competitors, the test facing them is not new. Almost all—Chenkoryan and Polar Islandstates athletes aside—took part in the sport at the Sixth Winter Olympics. The men's and women's Olympic champions are also in the APWS field, looking to become the first World Series champions in addition to their Olympic titles. Eleven nations will look to take home the APSU World Series Nations' Trophy, which will be awarded to the country whose four athletes received the largest total score accumulated throughout the four APWS events.

Some early controversy was headed off when the Ad’ihani Pentathlon Sport Union (APSU) confirmed that it would allow the Delaclav athlete Bob Shoefucker to compete, despite having a name that would be censored in most press reports and which was censored—against APSU wishes—at the Sixth Winter Olympics. Delaclava's official entry list included a first reserve, Mitch Armstrong, who would have taken Shoefucker's place if he had had his name censored.

Ashton city officials, understood to be busy preparing for the event, did not comment on Shoefucker's inclusion.

In separate developments, the APSU has confirmed that it is trialling a new scoring rule, in which athletes disqualified from or failing to finish an event are awarded half the points of the last finisher. Before this, these athletes received no points, including at the Olympics.

Men's event champion: Magnus Fjelt (PLI), 4072 points, APSU location record

This is the second straight APWS men's event to be won by a home athlete. The winning margin of nearly 80 points is also the biggest recorded in the sport's short history, with a margin of 18 in Ashton at the APWS and a margin of just 5 points at the Olympics, also in Ashton.

"Magnus, Magnus, congratulations on your win. And by a record winning margin as well! How do you react to the claims from your national rival Tek that you're too young to be winning things against older veterans like him."

"Simply. By winning. There's a whole host of young athletes coming up, and we can do most things better than Tek can. Tek, if you're listening in, retire. You're too old, let go, it's over."

"Finally, how did you do it, Magnus? The nation is dying to find out!"

"Do it? Do what?"

"Win the downhill by almost 30 seconds."

"Oh, that. Go faster stripes."

NORTHBROOK, Polarislandstates (BPA) -- After a solid all-round start to the Ad'ihani Pentathlon World Series in the first stop in Krytenia, the four Babbage winter pentathletes are having an up-and-down time of it in the second event of the series.

The Ashton stop saw Margaret Svoboda stage a come-from-behind rally, winning the final biathlon sprint to rise to third overall. This was a reversal of her Olympic performance, where she led the competition going into the biathlon and wound up seventh. Teammate Karin Anderssen finished 10th among the women, and men's entries Tom Ridge and Aidan Taylor finished 10th and 12th.

But so far in Northbrook the overall picture looks a touch dimmer. Ridge had an excellent day of it, winning the ski jump by a commanding margin and placing third overall for the second podium finish by a Babbagian. Unfortunately, Taylor fell in the opening downhill event and finished next-to-last overall, and the team lost several hundred points for the DNF. For the women, Anderssen sits 8th in the overall standing and Svoboda 19th. In the team standings The Babbage Islands fell from second to sixth.

With both Anderssen and Svoboda having their best events on the second day, don't count the women out. But absent some really strong performances--for example, Svoboda is 69 points off her Ashton pace--the team will limp into Far Point for round three looking to get jump-started by a home crowd.

Ad’ihani pentathlon: Points system comes under fire from sport’s only known pundit
NORTHBROOK—Having taken a break from the intense competition of the PSC Biathlon Cup, Julianne Corrêia currently sits at the top of the standings in the Ad’ihani Pentathlon World Series, a confusingly-named sport that combines biathlon with alpine skiing, skeleton, and speed skating. But according to Bernardo Eclestón, a self-proclaimed expert on this sport and dozens of others, these standings leave much to be desired.

“Does anyone know how many points a missed shot in biathlon costs? Anyone? Is it even a constant number?” Eclestón said while in Northbrook on a promotional tour for his upcoming book, One Thousand and Ninety-Three Ways to Fix Your Least-Favorite Sports. “Pop quiz: If Corrêia loses to Davis by 2.2 seconds in the alpine skiïng at Far Point, who will be in first place? It’s a nonsense system.”

While Eclestón admits that the points system is the best way to conduct a single event, as was featured at the VI Olympic Winter Games in Ashton, he suggests that the World Series title might better be awarded to the athlete who wins the most events—considering second-place finishes, third place, et cetera in the event of a tie—rather than the athlete with the most total points.

“The average fan isn’t going to be able to sum up umpteen thousand points on the fly, and if the average fan can’t do it, the average television commentator certainly can’t! Let’s just say, ‘Oh, you won two events out of four? Well done, here’s your trophy.’”

Though Magnus Fjelt, representing Polar Islandstates, would remain on top of the men’s standings under this system, having won the Northbrook event and finished second in Ashton, such a system would have had a profound effect on the women’s event, since current leader Julianne Corrêia has yet to win anything.

Eclestón also proposes that such a system be applied to the Nations’ Trophy, with the additional provision that the trophy be awarded to a nation.

Thundersnow over Pendrey as the former won a component event while the latter did not

Men's event champion: Roger Schwantz (KRY), 4099 points. Schwantz claims his second victory of the four-event series, adding to his title won on home snow. Home favorite Tom Ridge misses out by the smallest margin ever recorded, just one point. Ridge would have won the event had he tied on points with Schwantz, as he won a component event while Schwantz did not.

APSU will "review" scoring system
Far Point, BABBAGE ISLANDS— The Ad’ihani Pentathlon Sport Union (APSU) has responded to criticism of its points system in use at the World Series by saying it will "review thoroughly" the situation. An unnamed spokesman said any change made would be in addition to the current system, to ensure the athletes "will not be shortchanged" by the sudden change in scoring in the middle of the four-event world championship. —RAI Sport
