Tactical Error Results in Frustrating Draw In First Test

Mattijana could only manage a draw with Eastfield Lodge in their first test at the Stadijo Kolmetzov in Petrovijanka as a mistimed declaration and some stubborn away batting meant that they ran out of time in pursuit of victory.
The match started positively for the hosts as a benign, yet flat pitch meant that openers Dominika Elana and Ivaljo Radoslavjevic could share a slow but steady partnership of 115, before Radoslavjevic was eventually caught at first slip after nibbling a rare turner from Noor Gaasin for 69.
If Eastfield Lodge though they had made the crucial breakthrough, they were wrong as new man Marko Zackov as well as the ever-present Elana hung around for even longer, playing steadily, but solidly with boundaries hard to come by. Elana reached her 100 with the score at 210-1. 1 over later, Zackov picked up his half century with a beautiful cover-drive for 4.

The pair continued to advance until Elana, in trying to quicken the run-rate, holed out at long-on for an impressive 169, with the score at 340-2 at the end of a dominant first day for the hosts.

That continued on day 2, although the mood was slightly dampened early on as Zackov was caught behind trying to expansively drive fast-bowler Raf Gibson for an infuriating 97.

Julia Domasic and Jelena Laramazic then went after the Eastfield Lodge bowlers as they began to tire and plundered runs until tea, when Domasic was out LBW trying to reverse sweep for a swashbuckling 71. They continued to bat after the break, despite worries from many commentators and analysts, but eventually succumbed as Ali Makarena, having dilscooped a straight delivery for 4, then tried to uppercut a short ball, but top-edged into the hands of Quinn Parsons behind the stumps.
Nonetheless, 514 was an intimidating scoreline and one that Eastfield Lodge struggled to get to grips with as some clever bowling and poor shot selection saw them loose two early wickets to slip to 35-2 early on day 3.

A mini recovery ensued however, as Cipriano Glen and Quinn Parsons both scored 50s to take the score to 140-2 at lunch.
What happened after the break can only be described as chaos however as the wickets tumbled. Mattias Karamov flattened the off stump of Parsons as he fell for 54 before Haddock nervously poked at a viscous outswinger and nicked off to Marko Zackov at second slip for a second-ball duck. A short 15 run stand was ended swiftly when Glen, initially reprieved by the umpire when missing a turning ball from Jessika Nastasic, was found to be out LBW on review.
Having lost 3 wickets for the cost of 16 runs, the Eastfield Lodge camp were relieved to see a partnership between Duran Moran and Maynard Jaffer last until the close of play on day the close of play. However, things were finally ended when Moran frustratingly slashed at a full ball from Kasenka Riegler and mishit his drive to Ivaljo Radoslavjevic who was lurking at mid-off on the morning of day 4.
With the score at 231-6, Eastfield Lodge once again became unsettled and with the Mattijanan bowlers rampaging into the tail, things did not get any easier. Alexander Mackintosh was next to go, caught behind off Komarov, before the final 3 wickets fell for 25 runs.

Mattijana chose to enforce the follow-on, but were immediately frustrated as an unexpectedly strong rain storm in the centre of Mattijana caused the remainder of day 4 to be washed out.

Eastfield Lodge, blatantly yet understandably playing for a draw, just about did enough to hold on, keeping the hosts honest with some resilient defence and self-restraint. A draw did not reflect the overall dominance of Mattijana, but the hosts were made to pay for their two-day stint with the bat, failing to wrap up victory despite the tourists still trailing by an innings and 88 runs at the close of play.

Teams and Venues for Second and Third Test

Second Test: Stadijo Izola, Revinka

Image

Ground Modifier: -4
Situated on the South Coast of Mattijana, just outside the South's biggest city, Revinka, the Stadijo Izola is found on a small sandy island that is connected to the mainland by a 150m bridge.
The venue offers a more traditional vibe with a capacity of only 20,000 and a less frantic atmosphere. There is a shuttle service from Revinka centre to the mainland side of the stadium.
The Izola will host the second test, with more conventional 11:00 starts. The pitch is greener than the pitch in Petrovijanka due to the moisture from the nearby sea and is normally a bowlers pitch, albeit a more consistent one than the pitch in Petrovijanka. There is no real advantage to be gained from the toss.

With a pitch expected to be greener than a Maxtopian weed factory, Mattijana stick with the team of 3 fast-bowlers and 1 spinner they had in the first test. After an impressive batting performance in Petrovijanka, the batting lineup also remains unchanged.

Dominika Elana, Ivaljo Radoslavjević, Marko Žackov (VC), Julia Domasič, Jelena Laramazič, Ali Makarena (WK),Fredi Glukspiel, Mattias Karamov (C), Dani Komarov, Kasenka Riegler, Jessika Nastasič.

Third Test: KatarinaBula, Puljanka.

Image
Ground Modifier: -2
Despite being another venue used in the T20 World Cup last year, the 25,000 capacity KatarinaBula is a smaller ground perfect for the less frantic nature of test cricket. Situated in the dryer Mattijanan interior, it offers more to spinners and, despite the odd flat match, generally results in fairly low scoring games. Cracks and slight deterioration mean there is a slight advantage to be gained from batting first, however, it is the quality of bowling and batting, normally with and against the cocktail of seam and spin, that will decide this match, not a minefield of a pitch.
The ground is located fairly centrally in the compact theatre city of Puljanka, located roughly halfway between Petrovijanka and Revinka on the way from the capital to the coast. There is a reliable high-speed train network linking the 3 cities and tram links are a convenient way of getting around Puljanka itself, which boasts a wide range of cultural attractions including its famous plays.

The Mattijanan team reflects the spinning pitch with Dani Komarov provisionally replaced by the leg-spin of Grigor Turnov. Right-hand batsman Julian Illicic, who plays his national cricket in Puljanka, replaces Jelena Laramazic in the batting lineup.

Dominika Elana, Ivaljo Radoslavjevic, Marko Zackov (VC), Julia Domasic, Julian Illicic, Ali Makarena, Fredi Glukspiel, Mattias Karamov (C), Grigor Turnov, Kasenka Rieger, Jessika Nastasic.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

Watting, Hennessey deny Wray after Sutcliffe continues to impress

The University Oval pitch had the final say in what threatened to be a strong result for Wray, as Liventia's batsmen rescued them from trouble in the follow-on. There were more big runs for Wray's top order, as Tom Sutcliffe recorded his second century in as many matches, getting to three figures along with Jamie Jackson and Glenn Mitchell. Wray's imposing 551/4d was backed up by a 5fer from Jason Keillher to knock the visitors over for 231, but big innings from Dylan Hennessey and Stuart Watting, and sporadic rainfall frustrated Wray's chances of taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The University Oval is the country's most picturesque ground, with wide, sloping grass banks all around the ground, which on the opening day of the 2nd Test were packed with expectant and excited spectators. Thanks to the large collegiate presence and a copious supply of Northwestern Blue Pale Ale meant the crowd was in full voice, giving plenty to a Liventian side which faced uncertain times after the admission of their captain, Max Finney, that would step down following the series. The proximity of the pitch to the crowd certainly encouraged Wray's crowd to get stuck in, though it never went above light-hearted barracking.

The pitch was a typical University Oval one, with a light covering of grass which might suggest some early swing, but generally, conditions would be fairly easy to bat on, provided the batsmen used a bit of common sense. Despite some ominous looking cloud cover, Sterne won the toss and sensibly elected to bat, and was immediately rewarded as Wray's openers, Tom Sutcliffe and Jackson Colt leisurely began to build a partnership. Liventia's opening bowlers, Jonathan Adams and Matt Geach, bowled tightly, particularly Adams, who beat the bat on a number of occasions in successive opening maidens. A bout of rain limited the opening session to just 10 overs, with an early lunch taken. Jackson Colt had struck a couple of sweet boundaries, and was hoping to convert a good start into a substantial score. Ollie Kerr came in for some punishment as Colt struck him for successive boundaries, both shots relying on raw power to muscle the ball past the fielders. The 50 came up in the 17th over, before Colt threw it away attempting to pick-up Adams over midwicket, but instead he skewed it straight to Francis Kennedy at midwicket. It became apparent that the pitch had little in it, as the early movement extracted by Adams and Geach rapidly disappeared, and Sutcliffe and Sterne were able to settle. Sterne demonstrated the full variety of his skills in the space of 3 balls against Ollier Kerr. First delivery, he pounced on a half-volley and with a minimum of effort worked it through cover for four. Next ball, he defended astutely with a perfect technique, before he latched onto a short ball and cracked a pull through square-leg.

Sterne and Sutcliffe found it easy going for a considerable period afterwards, able to extract a regular boundary off Liventian bowlers who were often too wayward in their lines and lengths. Sutcliffe passed fifty and looked set to notch up another test century. Tea came with Wray on a strong 161/1, with Tom Sutcliffe not out on 67, and Sterne on 42. The breakthrough came shortly afterwards however, when Simon Sterne, eager to force the pace after a sedate start, hurried down the pitch looking to play Francis Kennedy over cover, but the ball spun sharply, taking extra turn, through the gate and allowing Garland Goudreau to knock the bails off. Things were nervy for Glenn Mitchell first ball, as Kennedy delivered a jaffa which spun big, past Mitchell's groping outside edge. Sutcliffe stuttered slightly whilst in the 90s, but latched onto a short ball from Adams to power it through cover to bring up his 100. However, a brief lapse in concentration cost Sutcliffe his wicket - something to be expected of a player so inexperienced - as Kennedy and Goudreau combined for their second dismissal, this time luring the batsman out with a juicy slower delivery, but it carried straight on and Goudreau was able to execute a sharp stumping. Mitchell and new man Jamie Jackson stayed together until stumps, where the hosts finished on 241/3 - well on top, but some wickets for Liventia in the morning could tip things back into the balance.

Such a event was not to occur. Beautiful batting conditions on day two saw Mitchell and Jackson build a formidable partnership. Mitchell brought up his 50 with a pummelled drive through mid-on, and Jackson with a single through midwicket, both before lunch, which was taken with Liventia bereft of answers and Wray looking very comfortable indeed at 359/3 - thoughts were surely turning to just batting the once in this game. The 150-run stand came up after lunch, as Mitchell and Jackson competed to be the first to 100, with the bowlers seemingly playing a mere auxiliary role. Glenn Mitchell was the first to reach it with a pair of boundaries off Adams, which the crowd greeted with huge applause and much cheering. Jackson followed a few overs later with a single off Kennedy. Max Finney was brought to bowl his seam-up wobblers to try and break the stand, but Mitchell didn't buy it and deposited the soon-to-be-ex-captain high over mid-on, which particularly delighted the crowd. It turned out to be Finney's only over. Mitchell was eventually dismissed by Kerr, driving a delivery that stopped a little bit, sending it straight to Dan Quinn at cover, who pouched a low catch. After tea, Jackson and Keillher batted at a serene pace, taking more time from the game, eventually declaring before lunch on Day 3 on 551, Jackson unbeaten on 145.

Wray came out to bowl, and instantly found a little bit extra in the surface - perhaps the extra pace of Storm and Matthews extricated some swing from the pitch. Blake Matthews in particular got the ball talking, sending a combination of fearsome inswingers and rasping short balls past Quinn and Finney. He then accounted for Finney, much to the delight of the crowd and the team, as he speared a ball on middle which was flicked to Jonathan Perry at backward square leg. He then dismissed James Quinn with a snorter, pushing through a bouncer at 92.7mph, which Quinn could only fend at, and glove through to Stacey. A Millbank and Hennessey partnership took them through to lunch, and just as the partnership was looking dangerous, Jason Keillher got Millbank to chop on to his stumps for 43. Things suddenly got very good for Wray as Keillher struck his very next ball, slipping in a yorker which caught Kerr unawares and trapped him plumb in front. 115/4. An aguando slider then got rid of Goudreau to leave Liventia tottering at 120/5, and then Hennessey threw away all his hard work by coming down the pitch to the wrist-spinner, but only managed to pick out deep-midwicket. Jason Keillher then embarked on an inspired spell of bowling, using seam movement to account for Liventia's lower order, bowling all of Cartwright, Geach and Adams. Francis Kennedy stuck around with Stuart Watting to frustrate Wray in their hunt for the final wicket. Eventually, after almost 20 overs of resistance, the number 11 was given LBW off Aguando and Liventia were all vdone for 231, still 320 runs in arrears.

Liventia's follow-on began strongly - Quinn and Finney got down to business and churned out some tough runs against a lively bowling attack. They put on 124 runs for the first wicket, using up 34 valuable overs. Matthews eventually got the breakthrough, getting the captain after a ball reared up and took the edge, where Stacey dived across 1st slip to take the catch. John Millbank was then run-out as a mix-up in communication left both batsmen at the same end, and Blake Matthews merely flicked the bails off. Liventia reeled momentarily, Hennessey being dropped 3rd ball at 2nd slip, but the pair regained composure and put together another important stand. James Quinn was undone by an inducker from Storm - he reviewed, but the decision stayed with the umpire -before Jonathan Perry dismissed Ollie Kerr for his pair, getting him edging to Stacey off a delivery that kept on with the arm. Garland Goudreau came in and put together a belligerent knock of 38, off just 46 balls with 7 fours, including a pair of gorgeous drives of Jason Keillher. Stuart Watting, for the second time, would play a key knock in keeping Liventia afloat, joining with Hennessey for an 87 run partnership, before Hennessey pinged his hamstring whilst running and had to be supported off the field. He would not return. Liventia went into tea on Day 5 393/6, having Leo Cartwright bowled by Keillher for the second time, but Liventia extended their lead considerably and extinguished any hopes Wray had off cheaply bowling out Liventia's lower order and making a dash of the chase. Simon Sterne offered his hand to Stuart Watting and the teams walked off for a draw.

Grounds & Travel Information

The Holy Wenaist Sultanate of Gruenberg is a large nation in the Malibu Islands region, formerly politically aligned with Antarctic Oasis. It forms its own sprawling subcontinent. Gruenberg is probably best known for being the only Wenaist state in the world. Wenaism is a monotheistic religion founded some 750 years ago. Highly hierarchical in structure, Wenaist teachings are handed down through the priesthood, while the state is administered by religious advisors from the Viziery. The Head of State is a hereditary monarch, currently Sultana Jianna Woltzten I, who has reversed some of the foreign policy endeavours of her father and watching far too much Game of Thrones to make her advisors comfortable.

Outsiders tend to focus on Gruenberg's repressive qualities - its gross social inequality, oppression of women and minorities, its ongoing subjugation of its eastern province, The Gelzien Nub, the public executions and corporal punishments, the fact that listening to Radiohead is a capital offence - but actually the state action has been characterised by the motto of "evolution not revolution" over the past century. Not literally - monkey science is of course not taught in schools - but rather that the Viziery have pushed modest reforms, such as political parties, an elected parliament, an expansion of the suffrage, fairly broad free speech permissions - to prevent the middle classes from rebelling.

Culturally, Gruenberg is best known for its populace's insane fixation on goats, which are revered as cats once were in Ancient Egypt, and as lolcats are in the contemporary USA. Most Gruenbergers are vegetarians, as meat is expensive, but cheap fast food chains such as Gruenberger Fried Dolphin and JewBurger are gaining in popularity, while the closure of WhaleCo Global Foods was met with violent protests. A staple breakfast consists largely of fruit. Alcohol is illegal, although anyone with the money can find speakeasies and moonshines that are tolerated by the police so long as they do not lead to public disorder; most Gruenbergers drink multiple cups of tea throughout the day, as well as an array of cola drinks such as the native Capra Cola and Glow Cola, the imported Blast! and Pink Bunny Cola, and the ever popular GruenChem Mostly Non-Toxic Industrial Syrup Mix #8, with new flavours including Orange Tang!, Summer Fruits!!, and Lead!!!

Cricket is hugely popular, and the national team have competed in several international outings, mostly recently touring Liventia; they began the GCF season as the reigning #1 ranked Test side. The domestic form of the game includes a lengthy first class season, two 50 over competitions, a new T20 competition, and several interregional All-Star games. Gruenberger cricket is best known for its batting; among bowlers, typically only spinners stand out. Furthermore, Gruenbergers regard themselves as the first developers of reverse swing, which is probably the only thing ever invented in a country with poorly defined patent laws. Fielding standards even among top teams tend to be poor as professional cricketers are semi-royalty, and spend more time promoting sponsorship deals than practising throwing drills. Batsmen tend to be wristy players who like to play the ball late, and often excel against spin while suffering from a lack of exposure to top pace.

Information provided here on grounds, pitches, and weather conditions is for RPing purposes; it should be considered semi-secret IC, as obviously no one would know the pitch conditions in advance.

Wray, First Test [Block 11] - The Raqqanderjiffuleb Stadium, Sal-Siabi

Ground: The Raqqanderjiffuleb Stadium may well be the most fear-inspiring spectacle in international cricket. In the mysterious desert city of Sal-Siabi in the country's hot, dry west - temperatures routinely pass 7 spurgs slobberchops* - it is constructed using non-Spogwonkian** architecture, which is a profoundly unsettling sight and leads to many bitter disputes about seating arrangements. Sal-Siabi's proximity to the Gurglestani border has had many detrimental effects on the quality of life of its four million inhabitants. Heroin trafficking is rampant, illegal immigrants flood the city's slums, and as the launching pad for ongoing military operations the streets are clogged with soldiers. Religious fervour is keenly felt among the zealously nationalistic inhabitants but there are concerns about the ability of state security services to secure foreign visitors, so few tourist tickets will be available.

* 7 spurgs on the slobberchops temperature scale equals roughly 40 degrees Celsius.
** Gruenbergers have never heard of some random Greek dude called Euclid, but they remember Spogwonk The Incorrigible as the founder of modern geometry.

Pitch: Extremely dry and dusty, the pitch offers very little for the pace bowlers, though the outfield is rough enough to generate reverse swing. Spinners can find movement, but not much bounce; they will have to toil through long spells to rest seamers in the heat. For batsmen, the most significant obstacle is not the dustbowl surface, but the weather, as the parabolic roof offers little shelter from the searing desert sun. Over rates can be slow as frequent drink breaks are called; additionally, the non-Spogwonkian design means there are occasional hold-ups as umpires try to discern whether the ball has crossed the boundary or not.

Weather: Scorchio. A deliberately unwelcoming place to kick off the season as Gruenberg attempt to defend their rankings slide with a strong home performance, dust storms are predicted and may cloud the air while offering little protection from the sun's fierceness.

Pitch modifier: 0

Wray, Second Test [Block 12] - Most Augustly Goat-Enabled Cricket Association Ground, Wurtbenn ("MAGECAG")

Ground: Replacing the Moroschwegen Arena of Death in the international rotation to avoid Wray's seamers gaining an advantage, the MAGECAG is perhaps the most scenic ground in the country. Set in the Holy Mountains, it has one of the highest elevations of any world Test ground - it is also by far the most goat-enabled - and is essentially cut into the face of the steep mountains. Gruenberg gets more holy the higher you go; the MAGECAG is surrounded by temples and shrines, while pilgrims to the Holy City will leave religious tokens around the city, lending it a colourful, vibrant feel. Not the most accessible of grounds for tourists, those making the trip will be rewarded by spectactular views, opportunities for mountain climbing, and almost certain intense religious persecution.

Pitch: While the MAGECAG may stand out in many respects, when it comes to the cricket it falls in step with Gruenberger tendencies: flat, easy for scoring, not much for the bowlers. Though conducive to spin and offering a little more swing than other grounds further south, the real kicker is the altitude and short boundaries, which combine to make lofted shots guaranteed run-makers. The ground is at a slight incline - one side is about 8 spontiwuffs higher than the other - which makes the ball naturally tail away from the Most Goat-Enabled End, and tail in from the Only Marginally Less Goat-Enabled End.

Weather: The altitude means that despite baking, blazing sunshine being expected, things can be fairly cool; in winter, the MAGECAG would be under snow. In mid-summer that's not a threat, but the cable knit sweater isn't about to go out of style there any time soon.

Pitch modifier: +3

Wray, Third Test [Block 13] - The Merlefurt Cricket Ground ("The MCG")

Ground: The series moves on to Merlefurt, Gruenberg's largest port. In a country not known for its all-embracing cosmopolitanism, Merlefurt is the closest thing to an international city, with the docks, the large university, and the relaxed local governance combining to make it almost legal to be foreign. The semi-legal nightlife is legendary. Merlefurters themselves tend to consider themselves somewhat superior to rural hicks from the rest of Gruenberg, and are more tolerant of deviance from Wenaism's norms. The Cricket Ground itself is nothing remarkable, but is set in a bustling market district. Fresh sea smells waft in early on, and as the evening draws in, fans will pour out of the stadium and into the street to try imported meats, exotic spices, and mysterious foreign drinks.

Pitch As the local nickname "The Spin Lab" suggests, the MCG is best known as the haven of Gruenberger spin. It is not uncommon for South West to field three or four spinners or to open the bowling with a spinner, and teams really need to plan with regard to selection of batsmen and wicket keepers. A conventional seam attack will get little out of a fairly flat track, even once it starts to crack, although there is sometimes reverse swing from the Port Harbour End. From the Dark End, there is really nothing doing unless you take the pace off the ball. Many of Gruenberg's greatest spinners hail from Merlefurt. With relatively short boundaries it is by no means a batting nightmare, but expect the hosts to field multiple spin options - come prepared.

Weather: A warm finish to the season as summer draws to a close, the coastal city is expected to enjoy cooler temperatures, and the sea breeze ensuring perhaps the most pleasant playing conditions available on a tour. Possibility of monsoon showers.

Pitch modifier: -4

Wray, Fourth Test [Block 14] - The Flurthwel Oval ("The Oval")

Ground: Gruenberg's first home Test match of the summer traditionally takes place in the capital city, Flurthwel (pronounced "flirt-well"), at the famous Flurthwel Oval, but as a sign of the changes being pursued by the High Sultana, this tour will see it close out the season. Being based in the royal city, The Oval is naturally set in luxurious surroundings mixed with bureaucratic imposition: the North End faces a tree-lined lake, while the Ministry End has a large, windowless building affiliated to the Sub-Viziery for Toes affiliated to it. The crowd will be much more middle class than at the average domestic game, but home support will still be key.

Pitch: The Oval is generally a batting paradise. Most teams winning the toss opt to bat first, and several of Gruenberg's highest domestic scores have been achieved here - but so have some of their highest successful run chases. The exquisitely prepared pitch usually holds true over a four day first class game, and does not crack easily, but - especially if left/right combinations are produced to make the most of footmarks - can get a little dusty. It has a lightning quick outfield; being an Oval, it naturally rewards shots square of the wicket.

Weather: As a Test at the tail end of summer, it will be a little cooler, with some chance of cloud cover, and the cooler temperatures may prevent the pitch breaking up.

Modifier: +6

Matthews to miss Gruenberg tour

Blake Matthews, Wray's left-arm fast bowler, will miss his side's tour to Gruenberg, which kicks off next week in Sal-Siabi. He is reported to have suffered a hamstring injury whilst bowling in the 4th Test against Liventia at Ford Park, when he left the field a number of occasions during Liventia's second innings, bowling just a handful of overs.

It has caused a selection headache for Wray - selectors Tom Shepard, Simon Sterne, Gregor Neill and Kellen Montgomery have drawn up a 15 man squad which includes both a like-for-like replacement in Christian Dawson-Lane, but also an out-and-out spin option in orthodox spinner Nathan Gardiner, as well as an all-round option in Mason Hargeaves, who already has two tests under his belt.

Conditions in Gruenberg are heavily favourable towards spin in general, and in particular Sal-Siabi has been identified as a merciless track for all bowlers - temperatures can be expected to climb well over 40 degrees. As a result, the selectors have mulled the decision of whether to go with 3 spinners - Shane Aguando, Jonathan Perry and Nathan Gardiner and 2 seamers - Jackson Storm and Jason Keillher - or whether to stick to Wray's tried and tested method of 3 seamers, bringing in Christian Dawson-Lane or Mason Hargreaves, and playing just the two front-line spinners (either Perry, or replacing him with Gardiner).

Elsewhere, Jackson Colt has shaken off a wrist injury and will appear at the top of the order alongside Tom Sutcliffe, around whom there is exceptional hype - the young batsman currently averages 85 in test cricket, after dominating against Liventia with 499 runs with 3 centuries in 6 innings. Wray will retain the same batting line-up, but questions still linger over whether Simon Sterne, now 37, will retire following the conclusion of what will promise to be a punishing tour.

The captain has remained remarkably quiet on the matter, as have members of the team and coaching staff. Pundits have been split on whether he will hang up his boots, or potentially whether he might give up the captaincy to Glenn Mitchell and carry on in a purely batting role. He has certainly hinted at the latter option being a possibility.

Kerr confirmed as new Liventia captain
FOLENISA— Ollie Kerr has been appointed Liventia's new Test captain following the resignation of Max Finney.

Finney oversaw the series loss to Wray – just his fifth series defeat in charge of Liventia – but had announced it would be his final commitment as captain.

Vice-captain Matt Geach filled in for the opening Test match against Mattijana at the Park Central Oval which was drawn, but he too has now resigned following Kerr's appointment.

Kerr has tapped Dylan Hennessey as his first vice-captain, while wicketkeeper Garland Goudreau has been named second vice-captain.

The changes in Liventia's Test leadership hierarchy take effect immediately from the second and final Test against Mattijana here in Folenisa (ground modifier -1), while there is chatter that there may be wholesale changes to the team following this year's end-of-season playoffs which Liventia look set to qualify for on the basis of their world ranking.

"I'm very proud and honoured to be given this role," Kerr told a press conference. "It will be a time of transition for our team following a disappointing season – any year in which we lose three Tests is not a good year for a team of our history and standing. I look forward to being the guiding force through this period of change."

Liventia's regular season will finish with a home series against complete newcomers Elejamie, which is likely to see new faces blooded into the team.

Mitchell: It's not easy here

Glenn Mitchell looked on sternly at the press conference at the conclusion of the fourth, and final, day of play at the MAGECAG. Wray had just been resoundingly beaten for the second time in 10 days, this time whipped by a hefty innings and 177 runs. This performance, he noted, was perhaps more concerning than the previous defeat, as they had had time to adjust to conditions, but still came horrifically unstuck against what he described as a 'not invincible' Gruenberg side.

Mitchell, taking the press conference in place of Simon Sterne, admitted that conditions 'had been tough', and 'some of the boys had struggled to adjust'. Minds turned to the under-par performances of Jackson Colt, who has acquired just 31 runs in 4 innings at the top of the order, as well as the middle-orders struggle for big runs, which has so sustained Wray these last couple of season. He also noted the difficulty with which the bowlers had to play - Shane Aguando has already accrued 90 overs in two games, and the conditions have taken a toll on the squad, with numerous breaks being taken and the whole complement of substitution fielders being used.

'It's disappointing, we though we were more prepared." he conceded "But we just haven't done the basics right - our batting has been sloppy right through, we've been lacklustre in the field and struggled to penetrate with the ball. It's been a really disappointing fortnight for us, especially given the great games we played against Liventia."

"But there have been silver, linings of course. Jase [Jason Keillher] played a great knock in the first test, Johnnie Perry has become a revelation with both the bat and the ball, whilst the young guys have developed well in tough conditions".

When questioned whether he thought the conditions gave an implicit advantage to the opposition, one which they fully exploited, he shrugged and said "It's their right, to do what they want with [their pitches] - we do the same at home, but obviously, we don't have nearly the same kind of extreme temperatures or weather conditions. Gruenberg are the best team in the world for a reason, that's because it's so difficult to come here and get a result."

But the vice-captain, as ever, remained upbeat. "We've still two matches left, and I'm confident if we can get off to a good start in the next game, put the hosts under some pressure, I think we can definitely pull ourselves back into this series."

Questioned whether Shane Aguando would be rested because of his heavy workload, and all-rounder Mason Hargreaves instead, he deflected, saying "that decision is up to the medical staff and Shane himself - if he wants to play, and he can play, there's no reason why he won't be out on the field. He's a key part of our plans to get back into this series".

But it's going to be a long way back for Mitchell and co - their batting performance has been nothing short of dreadful - recording just a pair of fifties across 4 innings so far, the batsmen struggling with the aggressive conditions, and the bamboozling array of slow and medium bowlers at Gruenberg's disposal, whilst the bowlers have failed to extract much from lifeless surfaces. The series moves to the MCG in Merlefurt, with Wray's hopes at salvaging a series draw on the line.
