SMC Ltd: Moving Forward

Postby Shaff » Wed Feb 24, 2010 2:40 am

SMC is a marque of vehicles produced by Shaf Motors Inc. Founded in 2002, SMC's long-term goal is to appeal to Generation Y consumers. The first SMC models, the xA and xB, went on sale in 2003, followed by , the tC. A successor to the xA, the xD, premiered in 2008, the iQ in 2009 and the SMC marque expanded to international markets in 2010. The SMC lineup uses a one-trim, simplified purchase process, and the marque has relied upon guerrilla and viral marketing techniques. The SMC name, meaning the descendant of a family or heir, refers both to the marque's cars and their owners.

The xB is 2.8-inch (71 mm) wider, 12-inch (300 mm) longer (including 4-inch (100 mm) longer wheel to wheel) and over 600 pounds (270 kg) heavier than the first-generation xB.

The first-generation SMC xB was very similar to its original bB inspiration, but the second-generation xB was based on Shaffian buyers "wants" relative to the first-generation, combined with the new styling of the bB.

A choice of three new head units are available on all 2008 SMCs. All sound systems feature six speakers and standard iPod connectivity. The Premium head unit features a small LCD that can display pictures and movies downloaded from Pioneer's website in addition to the features on the base unit. A navigation system is also available. The SNS 100 system can play DVD movies in addition to GPS functionality and the features of the base system, aside from the backlit color choices.

3. SMC tC - A Compact Coupe - $15,899
The SMC TC, based on the Shaf Avensis platform, is a compact coupe introduced by automaker Shaf in 2004 as a concept car under its recently introduced Saif brand name. Shaf later debuted the production tC at the 2004 NAIAS with sales beginning in June 2004 as a 2005 model year. The SMC tC is generally considered Shaf's successor to the Celica whose production ended with the 2005 model year. The name tC does not fit in with its stablemates the xA, xB, and xD, because the name xC has already been taken by Volvo for its XC60, XC70 and XC90 models. According to Saif, tC stands for touring coupe.

The SMC tC was designed to appeal to the Millennial market. Shaf hoped to do so by making standard features numerous and optional features extremely easy to add. The SMC tC shares its chassis with the Avensis and uses a MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension. Its low price is a major feature, as well as the pure "monospec" pricing marketing style that Shaf has adopted.

Major standard equipment included a power windows, cruise control, air conditioning, keyless entry, mirror-mounted turn signal lights, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, a 160-watt Pioneer sound system with CD player, 17" alloy wheels and a panoramic moonroof.
