Background
Officially first deployed in 1996, the MT-96 has proven to be a versatile, well-armed and well-protected main battle tank. The MT-96 is designed to take on and destroy enemy armor and anti-armor units, clearing the way for the deployment for mechanized infantry units.
Armament
The MT-96's primary armament is its 120mm smoothbore autoloaded gun. The primary weapon is capable of firing 16 rounds per minute, faster than most hand loaded weapons. The MT-96's armament also includes a turret mounted 12.7mm machine gun for eliminating infantry and unarmored targets, as well as four launch tubes where anti-tank missiles can be mounted.
The 120mm main gun allows for a wide variety of munitions to be used. The autoloader system accepts most varieties of 120mm munitions in circulation.
The MT-96's 120mm gun is controlled by a suite of advanced computer systems. The entire weapon is electronically stabilized. The firing computer is connected to several sensors on the vehicle, such as the gun barrel temperature, vehicle speed, and round type as well as the input of atmospheric data from the SWORD network or externally mounted weather observation devices. The firing computer's many inputs allow for extreme accuracy and a high hit percentage.
Command, control, and targeting
The MT-96 showcases the latest developments in military technology from Ionicus. The MT-96 was designed around Metix Digital System's SWORD Combat Integration System. Operators of the MT-96 can track friendly unit's positions, as well as track enemy unit's positions. Target highlighting allows for the command of weaponry, such as artillery, from the MT-96. The integration with the SWORD Combat Integration System also allows for each unit to be monitored from a central command post. Battlefield commanders can view all vehicle operational status, check casualty count, set navigational way points, and issue commands over either an audio signal or a text message.
The driver's position has multiple touchscreen displays, allowing for the driver to see navigation information, vehicle status, weapon status, and various other information types. The commander and gunner also have access to this information. A multitude of cameras provide a 360 degree view around the vehicle and can be accessed by any crew member. Thermal optic modes are available on each camera, allowing for a viewing distance of 8,000 ft at night or in poor weather. Periscopes are provided to all crew members as means of a back up system in the event cameras are disabled.
Survivability
The MT-96, as all vehicles operated by the United Technocratic Republics of Ionicus, was designed with crew survivability in mind. The driver's position features a wall of solid titanium allow along the front and sides to provide additional protection from armor piercing rounds and explosives. Explosive bolts, detonated from an emergency activation panel in the driver's position, allow for the driver's hatch to be quickly removed. An automatic firefighting system is present throughout the vehicle, with modules in the crew compartment and engine compartments. The system can be activated either automatically, by the triggering of thermal or pressure sensors, or by the activation button, located within reach of each crew member. The fuel tank, which uses diesel fuel (less explosive than gasoline), is equipped with a self-sealing foam.
The MT-96 is capable of operating in areas where chemical, biological, or radiological materials are present. The interior of the MT-96 is kept at a higher air pressure than the outside air pressure. In the event of a hull breech, this will prevent contaminated air from seeping into the crew compartments of the vehicle. The activation of filters for operating inside a contaminated area can be accomplished by the activation of a switch, a press on a touch screen monitor, or the filter cartridges can be installed manually, without having to exit the vehicle.
All of the electronic systems within the MT-96 are shielded from electromagnetic pulse.
The rounds for the main gun are kept in a wet storage system. In this system, munitions are stored in bins which are encased in a fire-suppressant liquid. If an armor piercing round were to strike the munitions compartment, the storage area would flood with fire-suppressant fluids, thereby greatly reducing the chance of a deadly explosion.
Special seats are in place at every crew station which absorb the shocks from IEDs or other explosions to help reduce the amount of crew fatalities from this kind of attack.
Survivability is further increased with advanced defensive technologies. Wave jamming technologies on-board the tank can block or confuse missile guidance systems, causing them to be diverted away from the tank. In addition to this, the MT-96 features an active defense system which fires shotgun-like flechette rounds can destroy missiles. Lastly, two high-powered laser devices are mounted on the tank. Each mount is capable of 360 degree horizontal movement, and 100 degrees of vertical movement. The high-powered laser weapon can incinerate enemy missiles, and in some cases, tank shells, before the round can be used effectively.
Crew Comforts
The MT-96 was designed to provide a higher level of comfort than most modern main battle tanks. This is especially important for long-range missions that require a high level of crew endurance.
Unusual for most tanks, the MT-96 is outfitted with an air conditioning and heating unit to keep the crew comfortable in desert or arctic conditions. Additionally, the MT-96 utilizes civilian-style, high-comfort seats designed by PAK Automotive to further increase crew endurance. A 300 liter central water tank is kept with drinking straws at all stations to maintain crew hydration levels. The rear of the vehicle includes a hot plate for producing hot meals while on missions.
Engine
The MTV-94 is equipped with a 1,500 horsepower turbocharged diesel, capable of propelling the vehicle up to 65 km/h (40mph). The engineers at PAK Automotive strove to produce not only a reliable engine, but one that could be maintained easily. The onboard self-diagnostic program displays which parts of the engines are in need of maintenance. Most components of the vehicle can be replaced in less time than it would to take on a civilian automobile. Exhaust from the engine is mixed with cooler outside air to lower the vehicle's heat signature.
The engine is located in the front of the vehicle, allowing for additional frontal armor protection, and creating a small area in the back where additional munitions or equipment may be stored.
