Brief History

The planning for Butterworth Airport started as early as 1985. In 1986, the government gave a go-ahead approval for the construction of a new airport in Butterworth, the capital of Gegeia. Construction works began on 1 July 1986. (Right: Newly completed Terminal in 1989.)

Construction was tedious, as it required the removal of a large area of swamp, and small basin rivers. During the construction of the Departure and Arrival Hall, a scaffolding gave way, causing 3 dead and 10 injured. The main cause was due to the fact that the land was simply too soft, and reinforcement works started right after the incident.

Finally on 24 December 1989, the airport was completed , together with 1 terminal, control tower, gates, and 2 runways. Terminal 1 officially opened on 1 March 1991, after 1 year of tedious testing on the new airport. The first arrival flight was a Gegeia Airlines flight GQ009 from Arnorian Gondor, and the first departure flight was a Gegeia Airlines flight GQ225 bound for Taipei.

With the rise in travel over the years, it was necessary to expand the airport to increase the capacity. By mid-1990s, Terminal 1's passenger capacity has reached a record of 20 million in just a year, causing the authorities to give a go-ahead for the construction of Terminal 2. Construction works for Terminal 2 began on 15 April 1996. With reinforcement works being carried out during the construction works of Terminal 1, there was no incident involved during the constuction of Terminal 2.

On 8 May 1999, Terminal 2 was completed. After series of tedious testing of the new terminal, Terminal 2 opened with much fanfare on 21 November 1999.

It was also the same year the Skytrain started construction to connect the two terminals. The Skytrain began operations on 25 July 2000.

As the world enters the new millennium, the surge for air travel increases rapidly. As such, to build ahead of demand, the authorities gave a go-ahead for the construction of Terminal 3 on 1 Februrary 2001. Terminal 3 was completed on 10 July 2006, and was officially opened on 3 December 2007 after series of tedious testing.

The authorities has recently given a go-ahead for the construction of Terminal 4. Expected to be ready in 2019, the new terminal will boast more self-service facilities for a more seamless travel experience.

On 24 December 2015, Gegeia Airports Authority transfers ownership and management of Butterworth Airport to GegCorp Holdings.

The airport is being operated and managed by GegCorp Holdings.

Opened in 1991, Terminal 1 recently completed its renovation on 26 November 2015. The GRAND OLD DAME of the airport, Terminal 1 boasts a sleeping lounge, a swimming pool, and large shopping facilities. Do whatever you want and feel like home!

Opened in 1999, Terminal 2 is Butterworth's second terminal. Terminal 2 is the largest terminal in Butterworth Airport. It even boasts a cinema!
