Backround:
The AT-21 Guru was developed as a private enterprise by Schwerpunkt(originally by NPS Aircraft Division). It was designed to be a powerful and advanced trainer aircraft, but soon the potential for other roles became apparent. The AT-21 is offered both as a trainer capable of replacing not only light trainers for basic flight training, but also as an advanced training replacing older jet trainers.
In addition to being a capable and economic solution for pilot training, the AT-21 is built to act as a counter insurgency aircraft. In this role, it can carry sophisticated weapons and deliver them with deadly accuracy.
The combination of advance avionics and weapon capabilities with a simple turbo-prop design make the AT-21 a highly cost-efficient platform, as it can preform the role of 3 different aircraft(trainer, advanced trainer, light attack), is much cheaper to maintain and operate, and affordable to purchase.
Aerodynamics and layout:
The AT-21 is a classic turbo-prop single wing design, meant as an advanced trainer/light attack aircraft. The aircraft has a turbo-prop driven 5 blade propeller and is capable of +7/-3.5 G maneuvers. The non-swept large wings offer excellent manageability at low speeds and altitudes common to both training and COIN missions. The large bubble shaped canopy affords great visibility for both crewmembers.
Cockpit and Interface:
The AT-21 features an all glass cockpit with HMD (Helmet Mounted Display) for both crewmen. When using the AT-21 in combat missions, the instructor position can be used for a weapons system operator. In this configuration, the pilot’s focus is flying the aircraft, while the weapons operator operates the sensors and weaponry. However, the controls are identical, so each post allows to fully all systems fully if needed.
Avionics:
While externally the AT-21 resembles fighters of an era long gone, it is equipped with rather advanced avionics for its size and role. As standard the aircraft is equipped with the following:
1) CEWS-1C: The “Countermeasures and Electronic Warfare System” combines several sub-systems:
2) NINE: Night Integral Navigation and Engagement is an integral all weather/low visibility navigation and ground target engagement system. Using the FAR-150C (if installed), a FLIR sensor and a laser range finder/designator, the NINE allows for ground attack operations with maximum accuracy. The NINE system is located under the wings (on both sides) and is integrated into the aircrafts aerodynamic design.
3) BASTION and GIN:
* The AT-21 is equipped with the BASTION-ASO battle management system. The system allows the aircraft crew to send and receive sensory data, GPS locations, and more.
*GIN, or GPS and Inertial Navigation, is a system that combines data from GPS as well as an inertial Navigation system to give navigation information even when the GPS system fails or the satellite signal fails.
4) SED-20600 Radar Pod. The SED-20600 is a unique Radar Targeting Pod integrating High Performance Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) and Precision Target Tracking. The pod weighs 196kg and can be mounted on the centerline hard point of the AT-21. The Radar is capable of high resolution imaging allowing the AT-21 to operate with extreme accuracy in any weather conditions, providing highly detailed real-time radar imagery of the target area. Data from the pod is integrated into the BASTION-ASO system.
Armament:
The internal armament of the AT-21 includes two 12.7mm heavy machine-guns with 200 rounds of ammo for each weapon. The M2HB machine-guns are locate in the wings.
The AT-21 is capable of carrying up to 1,550 kilograms of external ordnance on 1 center line hard point and 4 under-wing hard points. The possible weapon load includes laser and television guided munitions, GPS guided munitions, rocket and gun pods(including 12.7mm, 20mm, and 7.62mm guns), as well as targeting and sensory pods and fuel tanks.
When dropping non guided munitions or firing its internal guns the AT-21 retains accuracy due to its computerized fire control system.
