Backround:

In the late 2010s, the Royal Air Force started seeking a replacement for its large fleet of A-10 Thunderbolt close air support aircraft. The A-10 was extremely well liked by both pilots and ground troops, but the airframes of the fleet were getting old, and new threats made flying CAS extremely dangerous.

The Air Force required a plane with similar features to the A-10, but with even better protection for the pilot, better networking capabilities, and also a price tag significantly lower than modern fighters. Shcwerpunkts met these conditions with a surprising solution. Rather than design a new airframe altogether, the company suggested producing an A-10 based unmanned combat air vehicle. The advantages of the idea were obvious: the research and development cost would be significantly reduced, current support personnel would easily be able to adapt to the new aircraft, and no pilots would have to be risked in CAS missions.

The A-210 is the result of this program. It is extremely similar to the A-10, although slightly smaller. Its main role is support of ground forces and anti-armor ground strikes. The official call sign "Makosh" means pickaxe, but the aircraft is widely unofficially called Robohog (a reference to the A-10s nickname "Warthog").

Aerodynamics and layout:

The A-210 is virtually identical to the A-10 aerodynamically. The airframe is slightly smaller and lighter than the Thunderbolts, thanks to the absence of a cockpit and elimination of the need for the famous "armored bathtub".

While slightly smaller, it maintains its predecessor's features. The large, high aspect wings allow for good maneuverability in low altitudes and speeds, ideal for CAS operations. The ailerons are larger than usual, to also provide extra control at low speeds.Much of the aircraft skin is made of honeycomb structure panels. These highly strong panels are easy to replace in the field, and are light weight compared to their strength. The engines are mounted at an angle, improving stability in strafing runs.

Like the A-10, the A-210 is extremely rugged, and capable of being operated from improvised or damaged airfields. Not only do the large, straight wings allow relatively short take off runs, but the low position of the wings, combined with the high position of the engines, allow the A-210 to be re-armed with the engines running. The high position of the engines also prevents debris from being injected while taking off from rough fields.

Durability:

The A-10 was legendary for its survivability, and the A-210 is not different. While the A-210 requires no protection for its operator(who is seated hundreds of kilometers away from danger), the aircraft itself is still built to withstand a significant punishing by enemy air-defenses.

Titanium armor is not entirely removed from the A-210, and protects certain vital systems. The total weight of this armor is greatly reduced compared to the A-10 however. The A-210 has double redundant communications systems, and double redundant electric controls. The robust airframe and double tail design allow the UCAV to keep flying even with one engine knocked out, wing parts missing etc.

The engines, locally produced copies of the TF34-GE100, create a small IR signature, and due to their position are not only relatively safe from ground fire, but also "hidden" from IR sensors by the twin tail. To prevent the chance of damage to the fuel system, the fuel tanks are located in the center of the UCAV. The 4 tanks are self sealing, and have check valve system to isolate a damaged tank from the rest of the fuel system.

Armament:

The A-210 retains the formidable GAU-8 30mm rotary cannon. This hydraulically operated weapon is belt fed 30X173mm rounds and has a fire rate of either 2,100 or 4,200 rounds per minute (selectable). The GAU-8 is most effective against soft targets and medium armored fighting vehicles such as APCs.

In addition to the legendary GAU-8, the A-210 has 11 hardpoints allowing to carry 7,260 kilograms of munitions. Typical weapons include tv-guided anti-tank missiles such as the AGM-65 Maverick, laser guided and free fall bombs, and short range AA missiles(for self-defense).
The combination of a large weapons load and formidable internal gun makes the A-210 ideal for CAS and anti-armor missions, allowing it to make several passes at targets and provide significant suppressive and deterring support fire.

Control and Interface:

The A-210 is remotely controlled using satellite link, with the operator seating in a workstation. The workstation is virtually identical to a plane's cockpit, and has a control stick, paddles, and gage panel. The operator can either use 3 screens or virtual reality goggles to view the imaging from the aircraft's two thermal/electro-optic devices. One device is located above the airframe, and the other below. This allows the operator a field of view unmatched by "real" A-10 pilots. The VR goggles are similar to a HMD helmet, and can display any data from the aircrafts sensors. They can also direct weapons such as advanced close range missiles.

In case the satellite link is broken, the A-210 is capable of flying itself back to its operating base by auto-pilot and landing.

Avionics:

1) Two thermal imaging infra red and electro-optic devices. Mounted in rotating turrets these allow target acquisition at ranges of up to 15 kilometers. Both sensors also have a laser designation system.

2) CEWS-1: The “Countermeasures and Electronic Warfare System” combines several sub-systems:

* FRWR100: This is a Radar Warning Receiver which identifies tracks and classifies Radar emissions from possible threats. The FRWR100 coordinates with other elements of the CEWS-1 system, the FAR80 and Anti-Radiation missiles (if carried) to allow the pilot to engage or evade threats quickly.

* Friend/Foe Identification system based

*Electronic Countermeasures System, which automatically jams radar threats detected by the FRWR100.

*Infra-Red and Ultra Violet Missile Approach Warning System, which warns of approaching missiles and interacts with other systems to defeat them.

*Automatic Flare and Chaff dispensers, cooperate with missile approach system and FRWR to defeat incoming missiles.

3) BASTION-ASO: A battle management system used on all current NPS aircraft. The system allows the A-210 to receive and transmit valuable targeting information, and acts as a virtual radar, using information from other units to extend the operators sensor range.

4) GIN: “GPS and Inertial Navigation” is a system that combines data from GPS as well as an inertial Navigation system to give navigation information.
