The reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor is an advanced composite armor developed in Zhouran. The armor consists of a thick nanocrystal outer shell and several inner layers of ceramic-carbide honeycomb tiles encased within a metal matrix and bonded to a backing plate and several elastic layers. Because the reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor is very tough, any vehicle that uses it can take several punishments, making it effective in the battlefield. A thick layer of reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor has been proven to be effective at defeating the 120mm and 125mm APFSDS rounds.

Development of the reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor started when the Zhouranese People’s Army Ground Force wanted a tank that uses Zhouranese state-of-the-art domestic technologies, advanced armor, an automated loading system and a powerful 152mm smoothbore gun. On April 24, 1987, a prototype tank known as Tank Design-87, which used the reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor, was tested. On October 12, 1989, the Type 89 main battle tank, which uses the reflecting-plate ceramic-carbide-nanocrystal armor, entered service.
