Due to a combination of the introduction of a new rifle round and deficiencies in the existing service rifle, there has been a need for a new assault rifle. After some work, the Avtomat Novikova 125, shorted to AN-125 was introduced. The designers decided to use the Kalashnikov system and one of the latest AK models, the AK-103, as the base for the AN-125. This is because of the reliability of the Kalashnikov and that it would be relatively easy for users of the AK to switch to useage of the AN-125, a important factor due to the previous use of the AK as the service rifle of the Soviet Army.
Due to the use of the AK-103, there are many simarlarites between it and the AN-125. The firearm action and most of the physical qualities of the rifle are the same, with the AN-125 also using composite materials in it's contruction and also having a folding stock. There are differences though, taken to improve it's capabilities. The first is a vent hole on the upper right of the first chamber, that turns some of the gases leaving the barrel into an ultra-sonic whistle, similar to a dog whistle, that the human ear cannot detect. This is old technology but was re-introduced because of purported complaints of wide-spread hearing loss from troops using the AK-74M and its smaller high-velocity round.
A more important dfference is a redesign of the rails to allow it to mount a GP-30 grenade launcher and bayonet simultaneously. This feature significantly improves the abilities of the rifle when used in close quarters combat. The rails also allow it to be fitted with a variety of sights, including laser, night vision, and telescopic sights. The sight is also changed, using a rear peep sight instead of the standard Kalashnikov notch and post. Lastly, the AN-125 has a compound muzzle design, which significantly reduces muzzle flash.
The AN-125 comes in two varients. One varient, the AN-125B, is chambered for the 6.25x43mm PCTA and has entered use in some parts of the Soviet armed forces. This model, while not yet standard issue for the Soviet armed forces, is becoming increasingly more common as more are produced. The other varient, the AN-125A, is chambered for the 7.62 mm Soviet and is presently the most common varient of the AN-125. It is also the varient that has been authorised for export sale.
