About Compassion Cruises

The management of Vibrance Ocean Voyages would like to express our gratitude to the guests who have formed our company into a global cruiseline leader. At the heart of our philosophy is that wonderful destinations combine with wonderful people to make our cruises truly vibrant. However, we understand that the cruise industry is one which caters to individuals blessed enough to afford this luxury, and that another appropriate outlet of gratitude must be sought in order to fully share these blessings. That is why, with great humility, we are pleased to announce the opening of Compassion Cruises.

Compassion Cruises is not your typical cruiseline. We are not in the business to make a profit, or even to expose travelers to a new destinations, though we do hope to introduce our guests to a new world. Compassion Cruises is a non-profit agency, and our ports of call are far from the wonderful and exciting destinations to which many would like to travel. We recognize that great disparity is a real issue in this world, and that great suffering occurs to those separated from material wealth while in this life. Compassion Cruises seeks to ease that suffering.

Compassion Cruises came to be with the donation of a recently retired Vibrance Ocean Vessel. This ship, still with a wealth of life left in its bows, has been retrofitted to a fully functional hospital which will complete all its duties at sea and at ports generous enough to host us. This at-sea hospital will serve impoverished families and developing nations who do not have the financial or medical means or access to life-transforming procedures and community development.

The plan is simple. In many countries, even basic medical care is a luxury, and in some places around the world, half of a nation's population may not have access to a hospital or doctor. People in these nations—children, teens, adults, and the elderly—suffer and die daily from otherwise curable or treatable causes. With little access to build state of the art medical facilities or required hospital infrastructure such as clean water or reliable electricity, a ship is the most efficient means to delivering care in a developing country. A ship is also often the most accessible means to receiving care. Over 75% of the world's population lives within 100 miles of a port city. Through free, basic, health-care and transformative surgeries, Compassion Cruises becomes the face of love in action. The hospital ship provides first-rate medical professionals, state-of-the-art medical and surgical facilities and health-care training to communities in impoverished nations that lack those critical services. Generous individuals, businesses, and nations ensure that for each dollar received is matched one and a half times by goods and services.

A ship is a controlled, safe, and clean environment ideally suited for serving patients. Volunteers and patients thrive onboard our hospital ship where basic needs are met. Tranformational surgeries reduce the effects of neglected trauma, disease and congenital conditions. Dental care reduces the incidence of dental disease by providing education and treatment. Eye care reduces the prevalence of blindness and poor vision due to cataracts. Most importantly, training programs build the capacity of local professionals to sustainably serve for the long term.

Compassion Cruises needs your help to bring much needed medical care to suffering people who do not have access to medical care. We welcome volunteers and donations to help end the suffering of the world's poorest individuals. Every dollar received is matched one and a half times in goods and services. Please carefully consider how you might be able to help. How will you show compassion?

Our Services

Many people in developing countries have their lives threatened by craniofacial tumors, cleft lip, cleft palate, and ear/nose/throat diseases. Cleft palate, when left untreated, makes it next to impossible for a baby to nurse. Tumors, even benign, can grow to such large states that the capacity to function as a normal adult is severely compromised. Our surgery teams identify patients to begin the process for free, life-saving surgeries.

Certainly when most people hear this type of procedure, they think of movie stars looking to extend their shelf life in the industry. Not so with our procedures. Wound scars, tumors, chronic ulcers, and burn contractures are prevalent in nations that must use machetes and open fires on a daily basis. Our procedures relieve pain and disfigurement to these people. Many patients come to the hospital days before their procedure, and surgeries are performed under anesthesia. Skin transplants restore range of motion following severe burns. Recovering patients are monitored to ensure vital signs and to manage recovery and follow-up.

In a world without regular access to medical care, neglected trauma and congenital conditions receive specialized care aboard our hospital ship. Eighty percent of fractured bones and a large majority of clubbed feet occur in developing nations. Without treatment, these individuals must live a life of pain and embarrassment. Our medical staff perform life-changing surgeries and teach local health care providers the universally non-surgical technique for correcting clubbed feet known as Ponseti method.

The birth of a child should be seen as a blessing, but for many women in developing countries, childbirth complications are the beginning of prolonged pain and suffering, ultimately ending in loneliness and continued poverty. Without access to medical care, chronic medical issues may lead to abandonment by a woman's spouse, often followed by being shamed by the local community. Some of these medical conditions are unknown in first-world nations, and occur during prolonged or difficult labors. They can be devastating—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. A holistic approach to medical treatment combined with love is what our medical staff offer. With each patient's return to society, she is given a new dress to symbolize her beauty. Women also receive new knowledge on feminine topics to take back to their community as the next teacher, elevating her status within the community.

Medical conditions such as hernias and goiters are prevalent in developing nations. Children with these conditions miss school, adults become unable to work, and the cycle of poverty is perpetuated. Often, a simple surgery is all that is necessary to change this cycle. We partner with local medical care to ensure that free, corrective surgeries are available to the patients that need them the most.

Our medical teams address surgical and medical eye needs where blindness, oftentimes preventable, is widespread. Our primary surgical concern is to reduce blindness caused by cataracts, while non-surgical procedures focus on allergy, infection, injury, and pain. Corrective lenses, reading glasses, and sunglasses to protect sensitive eyes are among the eye care services offered. In addition, partnerships with local health providers allow for ophthalmic training opportunities.

We believe that a smile is a sign of friendship across the globe. Unfortunately, it is a symbol many are reluctant to share. Gum disease, cavities, and other dental problems plague countries where dental care is nonexistent and toothbrushes considered a luxury. Our hospital ship conducts clinics to address all of these issues, performing routine dental treatment and providing toothbrushes and toothpaste. We also work with the community to provide basic oral health education so that our work continues even after we leave port.

Even more so than in developed nations, people suffering from mental illness are greatly marginalized with the developing world. Adverse community reaction to mental illness creates further abuse. Few undeveloped nations have a facility to address mental health care, and those that do are often insufficient. Compassion Cruises seeks to partner with primary health providers to provide understanding to the local community, including church workers, teachers, social workers, prison workers, military personnel, and other local leaders.

Unfortunately, our hospital ship can only provide so much relief. For many, our ship arrives too late to make a life-changing transformation, their medical condition having progressed beyond the point of medical healing. Patients and families must bear the burden of physical, emotional, and spiritual pain. Our crew provides training for physical care of patients, and partners with local churches to offer spiritual support. As terminally ill patients are often the primary economic earners in the family, we continue our work to support remaining family members in developing new income streams.

Our emphasis is on sustainable social change. Community leaders become partner agents in effecting change. Conferences, workshops, and training opportunities offer practical help for medical issues suffered in the developing world.

To alleviate the problem of having access to health care after our ship leaves port, our crew collaborates with local health care providers to construct and renovate local health care resources. These centers are left with functional medical equipment and the knowledge to operate and maintain them from a local level. Specialized training is available to local providers.

Compassion Cruises partners with local agencies to help families and communities develop natural and practical food-producing skills, reducing malnutrition and improving food security. Improved crops and conservation combine with micro-financing to result in more income, better health, and opportunities to end the cycle of poverty.

Without access to clean, safe water, many of our efforts are in vain. Communities without access to a reliable water source receive support from local partner agencies. On some occasions, Compassion Cruises funds the building of local wells and water purification methods.

Compassion Cruises partners with experts from Birch Bark Books to operate literacy clinics throughout the world. These clinics perform a wonderful job of assisting individuals in learning to read, a vital skill that often begins the journey out of poverty. When our ship leaves port, plans are put into action to construct local libraries with books, printed in the languages of the host nation, on topics similar to the training we offer while in port, among others. To further our work to end poverty, Compassion Cruises offers small loans, valued at $300NS or less, and economic classes which act as a catalyst for building a sustainable source of income free from many of the dangers associated with manual labor.

Attention: Secretary of Health and Human Services of the Dem. Rep. of West Africa, Andre Marzo'te

I have brought your need before our board of directors, and we have unanimously agreed to bring our hospital ship to Freetown for your requested time period of six months. We understand the devastation that war can bring to a nation, and are deeply saddened by the news that your local hospitals have been destroyed due to the conflict. We will dispatch the C.H.S. Miracle to Freetown within the week. However, we would like to ask for additional security measures or agreements from your nation to ensure that Compassion Cruises staff do not become victims themselves of the conflict in your nation. We come to bring healing, not further dispute, and we treat all parties as deserving equal care despite their potential political differences. Our ship is a place of refuge, and we hope we can be a catalyst for healing in this time of recovery.

With deep respect,
Basil Honeybourne, Executive Director and Chairman of the Board, Compassion Cruies

Image

Attention: West African Treasury

We are greatly humbled by your desired donation of $5.45 million NS dollars. However, as our board of directors has unanimously agreed to bring our hospital ship to aid your nation, we are concerned that West Africa could use this sum of money to rebuild its own infrastructure in this time of recovery from the war. As many of your nation's local hospitals have been destroyed by the conflict, it is our opinion that your nation would be best served to invest this money in the rebuilding of local health facilities to sustain preventable care for the foreseeable future once our ship has left Freetown. Please do not be alarmed that we are choosing to decline your generous offer at this time. However, our leadership is more than willing to plan with you on how best to invest this money in rebuilding West Africa's medical infrastructure. We would like to schedule a conference with your leadership once our ship arrives in Freetown, at your convenience.

With deep humility,
Basil Honeybourne, Executive Director and Chairman of the Board, Compassion Cruies

Official Communique from the Treasury Department of West Africa

TO: Compassion Cruises

We thank you for your consideration, but money is not the problem, we just need to REBUILD the hospitals. We recently came into a large amount of gold near our capital (Oddly enough, it was found when a soldier detonated a grenade), and do not need the money. Also, the government has found vast oil reserves in the center of country, and we don't need the money. By our estimates, we could MAKE a hospital out of gold by June, but we choose not to. Much of the money we receive is going to rebuilding the country, which includes health, education, and infastructure. You are a healthcare company, therefore, you fall under "health".

We thank you for offering to give the donation back.

Secretary of the Treasury, William van Kroner

Attention: Federal Medical Technologies

We are greatly humbled by your generous donation of medical equipment. Your cell repair and cloning units will certainly see very good use as we seek to treat the trauma that many of our patients have endured, and in the repair of tissue that has been damaged. These and the defibrillator units will be a very good resource not only for our ship procedures, but also as we seek to supply needing nations with medical equipment to sustain our work into the future. We speak for the suffering people of the world as we express our gratitude.

Given your correspondence, we are relieved that we would not be taking medical care out of the hands of those who need it. It is therefore with great humility that we give our gratitude for such a large monetary donation. Be assured that it will go to bring healing to suffering around the world. We express our gratitude alongside the gratitude of our patients. Thank you for your compassion.

Attention: Nick Daniels, Minister of Primary Industries, Rotterwerp
We are honored by your offer to protect is in dangerous waters. As you are likely aware, bringing ships to developing nations often forces Compassion Cruises to traverse waters that are in conflict mirroring that of the nations we visit. It is a great concern to us to protect the safety of patients and our volunteer staff. Afterall, we wish to bring healing, not further conflict. However, we are uncertain how to appropriately respond to your offer as it includes the provision of purchasing Federal Medical Technologies products. We wish to extend our gratitude for Federal Medical Technologies' recent and very generous donation. However, our hope is to eventually supply our entire operations based on public and private donations, so we are unsure what our ability to purchase or projected need will be for further products.

We send our deepest gratitude to the naval forces for the work they do to protect freedoms throughout the world, and we would hate to pull them from their important duties when Compassion Cruises is not fully able to meet the provisions listed in your communique. We therefore are not in a position as of yet to accept your offer. We will reconsider your offer, if still valid, at the point in the future where we can adequately judge our ability to purchase and projected need for further products.

With great respect,
Basil Honeybourne, Executive Director and Chairman of the Board, Compassion Cruises

We sincerely thank you for your generosity in this matter. To clarify, are you asking Compassion Cruises to advertise on Federal Medical Technologies' page? This will certainly be done with haste, and we apologize for our oversight. We cannot express enough our gratitude for your products and services as they will surely go a long way toward ending the suffering of the world's poorest.

It is with great humility that our Board of Directors has approved your application to bring the C.H.S. Miracle to Port Isabel, Separate Texas. We are grateful that nations such as yours will allow those less fortunate an equal chance at adequate health care. Our hospital ship will make its way to Port Isabel once its current commitment with Freetown, West Africa has completed. In addition, we will be sending a small medical reconnaissance team to surrounding nations to research the most needed services in the area. Thank you for your compasssion.

With respect,
