Bulgarrenault is Bulgaria's first native automotive brand. In 1966, the Bulgarian government signed an agreement with French automobile manufacturer Renault for the production of its 8 and 10 models in Bulgarian factories. In that era, the local automotive market only offered Soviet, Polish or Czechoslovak vehicles which were rarely comparable in quality and availability with their Western counterparts. The contract with Renault aimed to diversify the environment and satisfy the Bulgarian customer's tastes, who desired something more than the average Moskvich.
Production of the 8 and 10 models began in 1967 in Plovdiv using knock-down quits imported from France. The factory was equipped with the latest available technology for painting, welding and assembly. Local component production gradually increased, eventually to the point of export amounts. Bulgarrenault 8 and 10 were eventually exported to Yugoslavia, Austria and Iraq in the hundreds, while some 100,000 spares were exported to France. Domestic demand, however, was low, and production ceased in 1970s after 6,540 vehicles had been assembled. Since then, Bulgaria has not manufactured light vehicles.
In 2016, the State Presidium of the Democratic Republic of Bulgaria was reviewing multiple requests from local Leftist Agrarian Revolutionary Party committees to re-introduce vehicles. Statistics were showing that 75% of important Party-related events were being delayed because of the lack of automobiles after the nationwide private vehicle ban. In another case, 35% of communes were experiencing losses and reduced output because of delays in the arrival of agricultural specialists and labour from other communes owing to insufficient large-scale public transport schemes. The State Presidium decided to keep the ban on private automobiles, but approved the establishment of the Public Automobile Garage Service, which provided State-owned automobiles for private needs. To avoid the need of imports, a decision was taken by the authorities re-establish the Bulgarrenault brand and begin production at the Lovech Automotive Works.
Since then, 61 public car parks with a total of 5,488 vehicles have been created throughout the country. Production efficiency and transportation have improved significantly while avoiding the environmental impact from having individual cars for every passenger. The car parks exclusively use Bulgarrenault automobiles. The State Presidium has been deeply impressed by the achievement, ordering a luxury version known as Bulgaralpine to be produced, and to begin a programme to replace all petrol engines with electrical ones by 2020.
Bulgarrenault is manufactured at the Civilian Vehicle Department of the Lovech Automotive Works. It was built in 2012 to assemble Chinese vehicles, but historically has been involved in aircraft production and design and manufacture of armoured vehicles. It hosts skilled specialists from multiple branches who cooperate on expanding their know-how and ability to improve production.
The Civilian Vehicle Department has 225 employees and a production capacity of 8,100 vehicles annually. The bulk of assembly work is carried out on a last-generation automated production line using high-quality components. Interior details including woodwork, furniture, handles, seats and indicators are all handmade by skilled craftsmen. Are you tired of your car breaking down because those billion-dollar corporations maximise profit by introducing plastic components in your vehicle ? That's exactly what we avoid. Our factory does not work for profit - it works to raise the national prestige and reputation of our nation and system to world recognition; unlike money, glory and recognition do not fade nor disappear with time.
