The E-10A Looking Glass, designed as a replacement for the aging E-6 Mercury, is a aircraft intended to relay commands from the National Command Authority to Ballistic Missile Submarines using VLF and SHF using a Variety of Modulations, Networks, and Encryptions. Commonly called a “TACAMO”, or Take Charge and Move Out, its primary mission is the receiving, verification and retransmission of EAM, or Emergency Action Messages, as well as the control of all Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles in the case that the ground control unit is destroyed.
The Airframe of the E-10A “Looking Glass” Is aesthetically similar to the Airbus A380’s with the sole exception of a small bump on top of the fuselage just aft of the Cockpit. This bump is where the transmission equipment for the E-10A is located. The Aircraft is hardened against EMP strikes, so as to ensure that, even if a Nuclear Blast occurs near the airfield that the E-10 is based at, it can survive to head up into the skies again to resume its mission.
The entire design of the aircraft is designed around making sure the aircraft can survive anything that a nuclear blast can throw at it short of a shockwave knocking the Aircraft out of the sky. This ranges from the aforementioned EMP Protection, to IR Reflecting paint and insulation, to air filters intended to keep Radiation out of the aircraft. The Pilots are forced to wear a pair of goggles at all times that will automatically turn pitch black in the case of a visible Thermonuclear Detonation and then rapidly restore vision so that the pilots could continue flying the aircraft. The aircraft is coated in a special IR Reflecting White or Light Gray paint intended to reflect light from a Thermonuclear Explosion and the Heat coming from the light. However, the paint is treated so that, as soon as the aircraft is exposed to a single detonation, the aircraft turns a semi dark gray, very similar to the color that the USAF used to use to cover their aircraft. In addition, the aircraft has a thermal insulating cover just inside of the skin of the aircraft, making sure that the internal temperature of the aircraft, coupled with its internal Heater and Air Conditioner, never exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit inside the aircraft.
In the bulge on the top of the aircraft, there is a VLF and SHF transmitter, as well as various other communications systems, such as Satellite Communications and other systems. Due to the aircrafts extensive array of communications equipment, the E-10A can also be used to act as a communications platform for conventional attacks, as demonstrated by United States E-6 Mercury’s and EC-135s in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom.
The Aircraft includes a section of the aircraft dedicated to a battle staff, who have the job of keeping the aircrafts crew up to date on happening around the country, as well as to maintain contact with the countries Ballistic Missile Force’s in one way or another.
