Introduction

Welcome to West Brnooklands International Airport, the largest airport in the Democratic Republic of Britanno. With hundreds of thousands of people passing through every day, it is also the busiest in the nation. Since its opening in 1937, it has served as the primary airport of the country and the capital.

As one of only two international airports in Brooklands, it is open to the world as the aviation industry expands. It offers cheap public transport to and from other, smaller airports in the capital in order to help connect even more people to the rest of the world.

Following a major modernisation investment program in 2008, the airport is well prepared for the modern day. It now wishes to open its doors to airports and airlines on the global scale, as the present changes to the past, and the future changes to the present.

History

The land on which the airport currently stands was once several acres of flat farmland that were sold off as the agriculture industry final hit rock bottom after several years of decline. The government, spotting the need for a greater presence in air warfare, originally intended it to be used as an airforce training facility but scrapped the idea when another piece of land that was more ideal became as available. About a half a year passed when the idea of constructing a civilian airport was proposed. Shortly after, it received approval and construction began. Within a year and a half a small airport was ready for the public to use, and it became surprisingly popular. The thought of traveling abroad for holidays began to appeal to a wider range of people, and the airport benefited from that enormously.

During the 1960s, business began to increase dramatically with businessmen wanting to spread their companies abroad along with upper class families becoming more adventurous with the places they visited. As the reputation of the airport grew, so did the size of it. The first major extension took place in 1969 after a rapid growth in the number of passengers. The small airport was becoming a well known one. As the typical Britannon seaside holiday began to fade away in the 1980s, airports around the country began to be overwhelmed with people desperate for their first time on an airplane. The airport was known as Sals Airport at the time, named after the fishing village nearby and it benefited greatly from the leap in excitement of travelling to another country. It quickly began to start major constructions in an attempt to keep attracting customers, but corners were cut by the construction companies in order to have things ready on time and in 1987 there was a large fire which killed fourteen people.

However, this failed to put people off and as safety regulations increased, people felt more safe than ever. The industry faced a huge boom in the 1990s, with record breaking amounts of people going on holiday abroad. Competition from other airports in the nation caused major investments to be made into the airport, and as the capital expanded dramatically the airport was renamed West Brooklands Airport. As the craze for going abroad turned into a typical holiday, people became worried that there would be a lack of growth. However, the population of Brooklands grew a great deal and so no major economic issues occurred. In 2008, the government funded a major modernisation program of the airport worth £50 billion. This caused the airport to become more well known on the global scale, causing foreign airlines to begin to set up links with West Brooklands Airport.

Facilities & Security

West Brooklands Airport boasts some of the most modern and advanced facilities in the world and could be compared to many successful airports around the globe. Five terminals, one for domestic flights, one for regional flights and three for international flights, provide those needing an advanced airport to travel to or from with just what they need. Terminals can consist of anything from 31 to 80 gates, with a remarkable 259 gates in total. Almost all gates can be used by commercial aircraft of any size, with just 10 not being able to dock the largest models. A large part of the 2008 investment into the airport was spent on up to date transport for transferring passengers from aircraft to the airport building itself in cases which a jetway was not available. Jetways are not necessary for all gates as, while Brooklands is not known for its heat, the city does not regularly have heavy rain.

In order to keep the millions who pass through the airport safe, security is well talked care of at West Brooklands, with the airport boasting incredibly advanced security measures, some of which are not revealed to the public for the cause of preventing those who would wish to bring harm to others from knowing what they face. Passengers are required to hand their luggage to airport staff, who will then test the luggage for illegal items using the latest technology. Understanding that speed is a major priority for many, this process only takes a few seconds but at the same time does not cut corners.
