1934 - 1952 : The Early Years
Skyway Airlines was founded on September 22, 1934 as the Vandelstein Republic Air Service, providing mail service between the cities of Helsingberg, Concordia, and Vatel with a fleet of 8 De Havilland Express aircraft. Passenger service between the three cities was introduced in 1940. In 1942, the airline was renamed "Air Vandelstein" after additional routes to the cities of Terragrigia, Auschewein, Brandenburg, Scheffield, Vandel, and Unistchia were introduced using 8 newly-bought Douglas DC-3 aircraft.

1953 - 1962 : The Jet Age and Expansion
In 1952, it received its first fleet of jet aircraft, 10 De Havilland Comets, and began expanding its operations to neighboring Switzerland and Germany. However, a series of crashes involving Canadian Pacific Airlines, BOAC, and South African Airways in 1953 effectively grounded the entire fleet. A backup fleet of 20 Lockheed Constellations supplemented the Comets from 1953 - 1958.

The airline received 20 new Boeing 707 and 20 Douglas DC-8 aircraft in 1958 and expanded to Italy, France, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Russia, Austria, Ireland, Canada, the United States, and Australia.

1962 - 1989 : Invasion
In September 1962, the neighboring nation of Pavlova invaded Vandelstein, Switzerland, Southern Germany, Austria, Northern Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Eastern France. All air services handled by Air Vandelstein were shut down. Other airlines such as Lufthansa, Alitalia, and Air France were severely affected and were forced to reroute their planes away from the Pavlovan Occupied Territories.

Air Vandelstein's planes were impounded at Helsingberg International Airport and the airport was shut down. The only airline operating within the country was now Pavlova Airways, owned and operated by the Pavlovan Dictatorship.

Unfortunately, Vandelstein's leaders were trapped within the capital and in hiding after the occupational forces put a bounty on their heads. The crew and staff of the shut down Air Vandelstein searched discreetly for the missing leaders, eventually locating them in an underground bunker accessible from the tunnels underneath Helsingberg International Airport.

In December 1962, the leaders were escorted to the abandoned airport and loaded onto the planes, along with hundreds of other people and families who were able to sneak in through the tunnels. With the abandoned airport's road access routes sealed and the entire area in darkness, a daring operation was begun.

The entire fleet of Lockheed Constellations, Boeing 707's, and DC-8's were loaded with fuel and refugees and were silently positioned on the airport's 5 runways. All the pilots waited for the signal to be given, then it came on the radio. "Freiheit."

At that word, the planes' lights came on, illuminating the runways and the distinctive swan decals of Air Vandelstein on the tails of the aircraft. One after another, the planes took off in different directions, scattering towards the nearest point of exit from Pavlovan airspace.

In total, 60 planes took off, 0 crashed, and 9720 people escaped from occupied Vandelstein thanks to the heroic efforts of Air Vandelstein pilots and crew. The plane carrying President Eglington Kurst, high-ranking generals, and other government officials landed in London and a government-in-exile was established as the Vandelstenian Embassy. The other planes landed in The Republic of West France and the Republic of Free Italy.

Despite having Vandelstein under Pavlovan control, Air Vandelstein was resurrected, operating from a hub at London Heathrow, then later, at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York. Many of the original destinations the airline flew to were being served once again.

In 1974, Air Vandelstein was renamed Vandelstein International Airways after the purchase of 15 Airbus A300 aircraft to help ease the load on the older aircraft. Two years later in 1976, 5 Boeing 747-SP aircraft were put into service and the airline expanded to cover destinations on all 7 continents.

The Lockheed Constellations, Boeing 707's, and DC-8's were finally retired in 1979 after a shipment of 30 Mcdonnell Douglas MD-80s were put into service. The retired planes were put into storage, repurposed, or put in museums instead of being scrapped due to their historical significance.

Vandelstein International Airways was growing fast. With a fleet of 50 aircraft and more to be added, the airline was beginning to earn the title "The Most Successful Exiled Airline."

However, in 1987, a vicious terrorist attack sought to destroy the airline. Pavlovan insurgents were sent to London Heathrow and JFK in April 1987 with the sole mission to destroy as much of VIA as they can. Unfortunately, many of the airline's planes were on the ground at the time for maintenance or boarding and the day ended with the destruction of 12 MD-80s, 6 Airbus A300s, and 2 Boeing 747-SPs. Despite the amount of destruction, there were no casualties. However, hundreds of passengers and crew were injured and promptly sent to hospitals.

The remaining planes, which were in the sky at the time, were instructed to fly to undisclosed locations in Canada after dropping off their passengers at their destinations.

Two years later, the Pavlovan Occupational Forces were driven out of Vandelstein by rebels and foreign intervention forces and the airline reestablished itself at Helsingberg International Airport in 1990.

1990 - 2009 : Recovery and Rebranding
VIA was left with 18 MD-80s, 9 Airbus A300s, and 3 Boeing 747-SPs. This meant greatly reduced passenger capacity and the airline was forced to cut off service to Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America.

The struggle to recover from financial losses and the general situation of post-occupation Vandelstein was difficult. A progressive new government promised to restore Vandelstein to its former glory, but the process was slow. Major cities were destroyed, thousands of people had died, and the environment was greatly impacted.

From 1990 to 2000, VIA cut off service to North America and became a European regional airline called "Vandelstein Regional Airlines," a far cry from when it was once called "Vandelstein International Airways." The entire A300 fleet was retired and the Boeing 747-SPs were pulled from service due to low demand.

In February 2001, Vandelstein finally was able to recover from the effects of the war with Pavlova and an economic boom followed as new investments poured in from around the world. VRA was one of the benefactors of this boom with investors coming and giving VRA a much needed push back into airline competitiveness.

Routes in North America were reopened as the Boeing 747-SPs were put back into service and joined by 6 more new B747-400s and 8 MD-11s. The airline's name was promptly reverted to Vandelstein International Airways in December 2001. In March 2002, a rebranding was in the works after VIA merged with Schwann Airlines, which served mostly domestic routes. VIA took over Schwann Airlines' few international routes and rebranded it as "Vandelstein's favorite domestic airline." In July 2003, the rebranding process resulting from the merger was revealed and the merged airline was to be called Skyway Airlines.

The planes were repainted and reconfigured to accommodate new innovations in the industry, as well as provide greater passenger comfort. The result was a bold, new look and a powerful red color scheme which is used until today.

In September 2003, Skyway Airlines became a member of Star Alliance.

A complete fleet overhaul was completed in June 2008. All planes serving before 2008 have either been leased to other airlines or are in storage.

2010 - Present : The Top of Our Game
Today, Skyway Airlines is the largest operator of international and domestic flights in Vandelstein, as well as the most preferred among local and international travelers. It currently has a fleet of 300 commercial aircraft serving international, regional, and domestic destinations. We pride ourselves on being the most innovative, customer-oriented, and forward-thinking of all European carriers, offering more while other airlines are taking things away.

Branding
The musical theme predominantly used on Skyway Airlines advertising is A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion in reference to the airline's rather turbulent past and bright future. This, and the slogan "Soaring High" were introduced in 2002 with the launch of the iconic "Soar" advertisement. The instrumental version of the song has been through several different arrangements since 2001. The most recent version of this melody was shown in 2010 with a new slogan: "Truly Yours". Other advertising slogans have included "Skyway's the Only Way", "Dare to be Different", and "Spread Your Wings".

Liveries and Tail Fins
Since its formation in 1934, Skyway Airlines' aircraft carried a stylized swan painted on their tail fins. The original tail scheme was changed in 2005 to reflect Vandelstein's new flag and to identify itself as the country's flag carrier.

The original livery was white with a black cheatline running along the sides of the aircraft. This was changed in 2001 when aircraft were painted with black tail fins with the rest of the aircraft staying white. In 2008, the current livery of red engines and a red tailfin was adopted to signify a bold change in the airline's direction of service and image.

Loyalty Programs
Skyway Airlines' tiered loyalty program, called the Legionnaire Club, has benefits that include access to special lounges and dedicated "fast" queues. SWY also invites its top corporate accounts to join a "Premier" incentive program. Skyway Airlines operates airside lounges for passengers travelling in premium cabins, and these are available to certain tiers of Leggionaire Club members. First class passengers, as well as Diamond Legionnaire Club members, are entitled to use First Class Lounges. Business class passengers as well as Emerald Legionnaire Club members may use Business lounges. At airports in which SWY does not operate a departure lounge, a third party lounge is often provided for premium or status passengers.

Short-Haul
SkyAccess Economy is Skyway Airlines' economy class on domestic Vandelstein flights. Flights into Helsingberg International Airport are operated by Airbus A320 series aircraft, while flights into Gateway International Airport are operated by Boeing 737 aircraft in a one-class configuration.

SkyAccess Business operates the same cabin as SkyRegional Economy, while providing pre-flight lounge access. In-Flight Entertainment is offered on 767-300ER and some A320 aircraft.

EuroClub is the short-haul business class on all short-haul flights, excluding those within Vandelstein. This class allows for access to business lounges at most airports. EuroClub provides seats in a 2–3 configuration on narrowbody aircraft.

Mid-Haul
In 2012 Skyway Airlines launched a new mid-haul product for A321s on routes formerly operated by Schwann Airlines. These aircraft have been designated to serve routes such as Jerusalem, Moscow, Doha, and Cairo. The 'Callisto' business class on these narrowbody aircraft is different to the product operated on the rest of SWY's longhaul fleet. A 1–2 configuration of 23 seats is used to allow for enough leg room and space for flat bed seats. All seats are fitted with the Thales i5000 in-flight entertainment system.

Long-Haul
Copia is the long-haul first class service on Skyway Airlines, offered only on Boeing 747 and some Boeing 777 aircraft. There are fourteen private "demi-cabins" per aircraft, each with a 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) bed, a 15-inch (38 cm) wide entertainment screen, and in-seat power.

Hermes is the long-haul business class on Boeing 767, 777, 747, and Airbus A318 aircraft. The cabin features fully flat beds. In 2006 Skyway Airlines launched Hermes - Next Generation, featuring larger seats.

Desna is the long-haul economy class offered on international flights to destinations outside Europe. It offers seat-back entertainment and several complimentary drinks and meals. AVOD is offered on all 747s, long-haul 767s and all of the 777s. Desna Plus is the premium economy offering provided on all long-haul aircraft, offering fewer seats per row, more seat comforts and power sockets.

This is an amazing storefront! BUT: Will you please sign up with the International Civil Air Safety Board? We would be very happy to have such a prestigious airline with us!

Good day!

We have received your application for a codeshare agreement and we are pleased to inform you that it has been ACCEPTED. We hope that access to our domestic routes will allow better passenger service and satisfaction for both our airlines.

We will also be starting twice-a-day flights daily to New Frontier International Airport with two of our Boeing 777-200ER aircraft and would like to request two gates at any terminal of your choice.

Thank you and we will wait eagerly for your reply.

To the Skyway Airlines, and the relevant officers, representatives, and assigns, greeting:

Allow me to introduce myself: I am the Rt Hon Gerald Nelson, His Majesty's Secretary of State for Transport, and in this capacity I am the ex-officio Governor of the Board of the Snowflake Airline, the Crown corporation that provides air transport services within and without Themiclesia. Despite being a Crown corporation, we do permit private investment, and the stake of the Crown currently is 1/4 of the aggregate ownership; nevertheless, this corporation is required by statute to follow government policy, and does possess some elements of mandatory public service. We pride ourselves upon our adherence to good service, principle, and immaculate safety.

Despite our best efforts, air travel in Themiclesia is severely limited, so the vast majority of our service (and revenue) come from international flights, and it is in this vein that we wish to form a coalition with your establishment. Annexed hereto are some facts which you may wish to include in your deliberations:
There are precisely two civilian airports that serve the 1.3 billion people residing in this country and her 20 million square kilometres of land -- one in Southwood, the international terminus, and the other one at Aquitaine, the domestic one.
Southwood is 200 miles from the capital city, and 8 hours by railway.
Our ticketing office is not fully digitised, and many of our tickets remain hand-written or printed by movable type, and our official records are still on paper.
Since our founding in 1960, we have yet to suffer any fatal accident.

And we thank you for your consideration, and annexed hereunto is the form which you requested. The airline symbol, as you requested, is simply the Transport Office logo with the text removed.

We are pleased to say that, after careful deliberation by the Skyway Airlines Management Team, we have ACCEPTED your application for a codeshare agreement with us. We are pleased to be able to make this decision as it will benefit both our airlines and increase passenger satisfaction.

We would also like to know if we may be granted a route to your Southwood terminus if possible.

Regarding your ticketing office, we would be more happy to assist if you choose to digitize it. Our subsidiary, Skyway Systems, is one of the most respected and efficient airline systems provider in the world and provides systems for Skyway Airlines as well as other major airlines. Of course, the decision is entirely yours.

We hope our airlines will have a fruitful future ahead.

To the Skyway Airlines, and the relevant officers, representatives, and assigns, greeting:

In view of your recent request for a route to our Southwood terminus, and after deliberations within the Legislature of Attica, they have made a special act, intituled "An Act for the Opening of Aviation to the Nation of Vandelstein under the Authority of a Previous Act Made in Parliament" and consequently permitted us to open the terminus to your use.

Internally, arrangements have been made to accommodate your ground staff, in the form of dedicated office space within the Main Ticketing Building and in the East Administrative Building. Moreover, the shared use of first class waiting room, as well as the exclusive use of the second class waiting room #15, and the third class waiting room #28, 35, and 67 have been assigned to your passengers.

As well, we have taken the liberty of drawing up a draft schedule for flight #31 (outbound) and #32 (inbound), daily, from Southwood to your nation's airport(s), and we also pray that you might extend reciprocal courtesy to our ground staff in your airport(s). The aircraft that we will wish to use is the Boeing B777-300 - on which will be our Second Class, Premier Third Class, and Third Class services. Most airlines return our mail to ask if we have a First Class -- indeed we do, but this is a diplomatic service only available on some aircrafts, and not open to public. This uncommon system is mandated in our Royal Charter as the premier air carrier, in our obligation to ferry diplomatic personnel to and from Themiclesia.

As well, please do note that if you do fly into our airport, our airport is amongst one of the most undersized and unorganised in the world. It will take much attention and care to land an aircraft in Southwood safely. There are mountains adjoining too close on the south, west, and north of the airport, but the approaching direction for landing is west only. The aircraft will need to make a circular flight over the valley to land safely. And our airport is a mass of interdependent buildings, some old and some new. If we had our way we should have moved to Aquitaine, but Southwood, like our company, also holds the Royal Charter to be the exclusive international terminus, so they are under no pressure to renovate or enlarge.

And we thank you for your consideration, and annexed hereunto is the form which you requested. The airline symbol, as you requested, is simply the Transport Office logo with the text removed.

Thank you for the kind consideration regarding our request to open a route to Southwood. We will be using one of our Boeing 777-200ER aircraft for one outbound and one inbound flight every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We hope this proposition will be favorable to you and other concerned authorities.

We have contacted and made arrangements, in your behalf, with Helsingberg International Airport, and we are pleased to report that they are happy to have you flying to them. You have been assigned gates 15 and 16 in the west concourse of Terminal 3. There is a special crew lounge available for all your crew located at level 3 of the same concourse. Lounges are also available for passengers at level 2 of the same concourse.

Once again, thank you for allowing us to work together for a better future for our airlines and, especially, our passengers.

Thank you for your interest in providing fine drinks to our passengers and guests.

I have personally reviewed the catalog you have attached with you message, and I have to say, the selections are wonderful. We would like to make you a regular supplier of drinks. Your company will be partnered with our SkyCuisine division and we would like to order everything on your catalog. Your products will be introduced on flights and in our lounges once all the preparations and integration have been completed.

Regarding the increase in business profile, it will work both ways. As a major international airline, we believe your products will be exposed to passengers who have not yet tasted them and you will gain a lot of new customers. As for us, the presence of your products in our planes and lounges will associate us with a great company, encouraging passengers to fly with us more.

Purchasing of your products will begin by the end of October and we will hopefully introduce them by November in preparation for the upcoming holiday season when we receive a large influx of new and regular guests.

Sincerely yours,
Martin Brandon, President and CEO, Skyway Airlines
