Sensors, Communications and Equipment

The Veil is equipped with a sensor suite almost identical to the Dusky class, but with the AN/SPQ-22 EM Scan Array, which gives it additional multifunction phased array radar and close-to-medium range search/identification/tracking capabilities.

External communications are done through the AN/SZC-2 Subspace Transceiver and the AN/SRC-104 Radio tower. The subspace communications requires more power and generates higher emissions, but the signal is instantaneous; radio is far more conventional and functions effectively at short ranges or non-immediate situations.

Of key interest is the Veil's Faster-Than-Light Inhibitor (FTLi) Device, which when operative prevents FTL entry within a variable radius of up to a few tens of thousands of kilometers (depending on the circumstances, FTL drive type, power and other variables).

Dusky class Destroyer

The Dusky class ships are used by the PSF to guard trade routes, convoy civilian ships, and fight pirates, raiders and smugglers.

Originally designed as main-line warships, the Duskys are given destructive weapons including dozens of multi-megaton yield fusion torpedoes, a 529 mm CG, a sturdy, compact shield generator and a high-powered point defense laser.

The potent ships are categorized by the PSF as destroyers, although with 95 meters of length and less than nine thousand tons, they are offered to the interstellar market as frigates.

Engine Burn Duration: 852.19 minutes

Armor

60-90 mm advanced multicellular metal foam covering 3,456 square meters of forward, aft, ventral, dorsal, starboard and port hull sections. Decks and bulkheads are 25 mm standard multicellular metal foam and are radiation-shielded in the event of outer hull compromise. Total mass of armor: 811 tons.

Shields

The Dusky is fully protected by a Mark 3 Erickson Pressure Field Generator.

Designed and specifically built for the Dusky-class destroyer series, the Mark 3 EPF Generator is extremely compact and provides a level of impenetrability on par with an invisible, un-damageable layer of carbon nanotube composite armor. It's minimum recharge time is 3 minutes @ 309 MW. Once charged, the shield will block projectile and beam weapons from hitting the ship unless they can physically penetrate the EPF (by applying more force per unit area than the rated 1,216 MPa). In this case the EPF Generator is not compromised, and only a brief and temporary 'hole' is made in the EPF itself. The EPF Generator can be compromised, however, when the field absorbs more than 55.6 Gigajoules of energy, at which point it will be overloaded and shut down automatically to prevent catastrophic explosion of stored energy with nowhere to go.

Reactor and Drive

The Dusky is powered by the N236 Reactor, which generates power by fusion of a combination of deuterium and helium-3. The N236 provides a surplus of 19.6 MW at peak use. This energy is used extensively in the vessel's armament, defenses, sensors and drives.

At sublight velocities, the Dusky is propelled by a single Type N9 Plasma Drive, which shares the N236 Reactor and fuel. About 1500 tons of hydrogen propellant is standard load, giving the Dusky considerable in-system maneuvering capability.

For FTL travel, the Nova Stardrive is employed. [OOC: The given FTL speed is for flavor only and can be ignored. Ships should travel "at the speed of plot," no faster nor shorter. This ship is an "average" FTL velocity ship, whatever your 'average speed' tends to be. This can be justified IC by using different power levels.]]

Sensors, Communications and Equipment

The ship's hyperspace and subspace sensors allow it to detect a variety of FTL drive types, and its high-powered EM (radar and lidar), gravity and optical sensors give the Dusky more "eyes" than any previous PSF warship.

Although the ship has no active FTL sensors, it has a subspace communicator which allows for near-instantaneous ship-to-shore communications, and passive FTL which enables detection of FTL drive usage at long ranges (9 million kilometers). The gravity sensor, which can operate in either active or passive mode, is an offshoot of gravity-wave generator technology originally designed to eliminate the need for spin habitats or null-g ship operation. The ship can also be outfitted to carry and launch sensor probes.

Processing this sensor data is a computer network is based on a Shor 2.0 Central Processor providing 14 petaFLOPS, which more than meets the requirement for the safe operation of the ship's FTL systems. In combat involving more than one, PSF doctrine calls for the Duskys to share real-time sensor data and coordinate attacks accordingly, with the computer triangulating target positions and automatically plotting optimum fire solutions.

Layout, Accommodations and Design

Small, sleek, and given weapons many critics say are too large for her size, the Dusky class is not luxuriously designed.

There are no personnel elevators. Traveling between decks involves ascending or descending one of four main ladders; two aft (from the OCC on down to the Sensor Mast), two forward (just abaft the torpedo storage rooms).

Deck A is small, with thick bulkheads, and contains the "bridge." Officially known as the Operations and Command Center (or OCC), here the duty crew control all of the ship's maneuver, weapons, sensor, communications and administrative functions.

Below, Deck B consists primarily of the Medical Berth and two airlocks. It also features armored hatches linking the area with the upper engineering section above the main reactor. The deck below, Deck C, is the first to extend the length of the ship towards the bow.

Deck D, the protected middle of the ship, is where the cramped crew quarters (twelve enlisted crammed into a compartment 6 x 6 meters broad and 2.75 meters headspace) are located. Quarters for officers and senior enlisted are the same size, but with decreasingly few personnel assigned per the space, with finally the CO and XO each getting a compartment to themselves. Enlisted have one common bathroom, shower, laundry, galley and mess. The area also contains torpedo and side-mount CG munition storage rooms.

The lowest deck contains the cargo compartments, fuel and propellant tanks, assorted sensor equipment, the point defense laser system and equipment.

The section of the ship aft of the bridge superstructure, engineering, is full of equipment: the main reactor and engine system, the main power generator, transformers and wiring, the FTL drive and gravity wave generator.

Depending on mission requirements, some Dusky's may convert crew quarters to varying purposes, such as a secure holding cell or small storage facility. Also depending on mission requirements, different quantities and types of munitions might be stored, less or more propellant, etc.

Deck Layout Summary

Deck A: Operations & Command Center (OCC)

Deck B: Airlock 1 & 2, Medical Bay

Blackfire Particle Accelerator Weaon (PAW)

The "Blackfire" project begun by New Atomics was an attempt to fill a role in ship-to-ship combat that present weapons could not. At the time of its development, PSF laser weapons engineering had reached a limit in peak power output. This presented a problem at long range engagements, for the weapon would require significant dwell time to burn through armor. At such ranges, given the likelihood of the target vessel rapid, unpredictable maneuvering ("jinking") as well as instability in the firing platform, beam dwell time was insufficient to cause any real damage.

Higher power weapons were desired to more quickly blow through armor; lasers, as a rule, deposit energy on the outer surface and must burn through layers to penetrate. As advances in armor - particularly the development of Phenia Metal Co. Alloy 54 - and energy shielding were made, lasers as anti-ship weapons were limited to close engagements, and were relegated to a point-defense and anti-sensor role.

At that time, only missiles could compete at longer ranges, and these could both be intercepted, outmaneuvered, or defeated by electronic warfare methods.

Particle beam weapons development had meanwhile reached a point where New Atomics produced a design, which was quickly bought up by the PSF Procurement Department, for a high-powered, long-range direct-fire weapon which could defeat current armors and shielding. This design, named after its project name "Blackfire," is an exoatmospheric neutral particle beam weapon, provided one gigajoule of energy by the new Hypercapacitor Mk II. At the weapon's peak power use, 20 kiloamps of current propagate a 2.58 meter diameter beam of hydrogen atoms up to 99% the speed of light. The 89.29 microsecond pulse carries with it 11.2 terawatts of destructive power, enough to penetrate even the most advanced armors of the day, and which could easily saturate most energy shields with a few blasts.

The entire system weighs 646 metric tonnes, and is currently only utilized as a spinal-mount weapon on one type of warship, the Thresher class Corvette. In this role it is mainly limited by ease of aiming; the ship itself must make fine use of RCS thrusters to target.

Like lasers, it is capable of a low-power, energy conserving mode, but this mode is less than ideal at moving targets because of the near-hopelessness of maintaining significant beam dwell time. In high-current, lightning-like pulses, whatever the weapon hits is likely to cause significant damage.

In addition to depositing heat energy, the neutral particles interacting with the target material will generate breaking, or Bremsstrahlung radiation which causes anciliary damage effects and requires heavy tungsten (or similar material) shielding to protect against the bursts of X-ray and Gamma-Ray radiation.
