Destiny in the desert--passions flaring under the hot sun as the gold a bandit warlord seeks vies with the treasure of a beautiful woman's heart...
When Baroness Lavinia de Hamilcar's property goes missing as the result of a train robbery by the mysterious Sons of the Dragon, she stubbornly goes to recover it from the desert brigands, little realizing that it is her heart that may ultimately be stolen by the powerful warlord who commands them.

Exerpt
"Why would you return to a people who do not care for you if you love me?" he asked.
"I..." she did not know what to say, her throat ached and her heart plunged in her breast as she looked into his dark fascinating eyes, and felt a yearning such as she never felt in all her life...

Historical Fiction
Image
Captain Joachim Carmel had come to liberate Padria from the rule of the Duchess of Ossurwald and support Count Allon's claim to the throne. He had expected his greatest opponents to be the Ossurwalders and their mercenaries, little suspecting that his true opponent would be Princess Claire II of Riemaia. Future historians would call her the Witch of Padria...

ImageOn the way to a settlement in Raith Immel, the beautiful young Claudia is captured by a war party of Elwe. She struggles with her passion for her fiance Vincent who is searching for her desperately, and for her captor, Carundo, a man of the wild forests.

Image
Ciatach, son of Carundo, is a wilderness guide leading woods-foolish pilgrim settlers. He finds this good work though at times trying, as he finds it difficult to get folk from the softer civilized lands to appreciate the ways of the wild. Yet he finds the lovely Mariamme disturbingly attractive. Mariamme finds him unsettling as well, even though she is gladly awaiting her marriage to an upstanding Bishop's son in Brightwater...or is she?

Image
Princess Ruthan of the House of Obed was to be wedded to Prince Vieno as a means to return the Royal House to its throne in 1899. For a young woman sent far from her home to the cold lands of Riemaia seemed like a sentence of exile. But she was unexpectedly challenged from her sorrow by the warm heart of the Prince to wed.
A startlingly erotic and romantic novel which shocked publishers and booksellers in New Edom!

Modern Romance
Image
When Johanna went to deal with her mother's will in Sterry she decided to keep the cafe her mother had owned running. Divorced and gun-shy, she met Rafe, the owner of a nearby boat rental shop, and other friends in the area who encouraged her to find life beyond mourning and love beyond control.

Image
What was Cynthia Demarez, a successful doctor from Ossurwald, doing in war torn New Edom working for Doctors Beyond Borders? Was it the broken heart that made her want to help others? Or was she looking for something else? Would she find it in the arms of Caleb, the disturbingly attractive Baran medical officer?

Leuffindir condemns these books as unholy abominations that strike against the very fabric of civilized society. In his wisdom, President Kilambe has banned the sale of any further romance novels upon learning that Countess Lalery's were available in Leuffindir.

The Writers and Publisher's Council in Caltris
The Beastling States of Crystal Spires

4:00pm Mystrian Central Standard Time (MCST)

The mid afternoon sun gave the Council Chambers a cheerful feeling as they sat in the chambers which was like a lecture hall with wooden desks all facing one another with podiums for each representative in the council. They were engaging in their usual lively debate on the published material to be serialized and sold in Spirean Book Shops when a young Owl Beastling spoke up to the Council.

"We have received word that the nation of Leuffindir has banned the works of Romance Novelist Olivia Lalery, due to their unabashed hatred of exposing relationships both imaginary and literal in written word."

"Well that hardly sounds like a civilized nation." A foxkin said as he wrote notes down in his paper notebook. "Perhaps we should Contact the Minister of Economic Affairs and put in a word? Or perhaps a provocative statement from the High Chancellor himself? Goodness knows Maven hates infringement on protected rights just like any Spirean around. Perhaps we should contact Vane and make a statement, requesting copies of Miss Lalery's books, goodness knows there's no greater support than financial support of both an idea and a concept."

"Well it ssseemsss we can allow for sssuch thingsss" A lizard like creature said with a displeased look on his face. "There'sss alwaysss waysss to handle multiple sssituationsss."

"Then both a message to Vane and also to Maven?" A young man said, one of the humans in the Council said as he typed up a message to Vane. "All in favor?"

"AYE!" The Council responded. "Then to the next order of business..."

The High Council Chambers in Caltris
The Beastling States of Crystal Spires

4:30PM MCST

The High Chancellor was in a stupor as he felt the heat in his office begin to fill his mind with feelings of exhaustion. The gentle winged giant flipped through his messages as he discovered a message from Vane detailing a ban of books from New Edom by this strange puritanical nation of Leuffindir.

Banning books because they depict romance? Egad what will they think of next... the Storkii thought as he Carefully took his time to write a letter detailing the sum total of the Spirean view on censorship, and he was amazed that this type of nation bore any credence at all, but given their denial of free speech, this gave incentive to place a blacklist on Leuffindir and would continue to watch it carefully, lest these actions spin out of control and lead to harm.

Honored Leader of Leuffindir,

We of Crystal Spires express our concern for free speech advocacy in your nation, as such we wish for you to define the punishments for those who possess or sell one of Miss Lalery's novels. We understand that in practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on libel, slander, obscenity, incitement to commit a crime, etc. and that with the right to impart speech it entails special duties and responsibilities and may be subject to certain restrictions when respect of the rights or reputation of others, protection of national security or of public order (order public), or of public health or morals. With this in mind we fail to see what Miss Lalery's novels have done to compel the banning of her novels. They do not threaten national security or public order, they do not slander anyone and if the romantic scenes are offensive to Leuffindir morality and sense of obscenity, perhaps it would be best to declare ratings for books in order to prescribe recommended ages and such. To outright ban literature is an affront to free speech, and if such speech is prohibited it is likely that the Beastling States will refuse to conduct national relations with your country and Spirean business will not be permitted to buy or sell to your nation. Doing so would hurt your nation financially, is pointless, and without merit. 'Tis best for your nation to perhaps lift such strict restrictions for the good and welfare of all, and to protect your citizen's rights.

To Whom it May Concern,

Thank you very much for your agreement to make my book, A Winter Princess into a feature film! I feel very proud of a general movement to encourage people to enjoy the natural pleasures of the human body between consenting adults, and a lot of people are more visual than they are literary. It really is a beautiful love story between two young people. I would like to recommend that there should be an R-rated version for countries that do not permit X-rated or NC-17 rated movies to be shown in their theaters.

I would also like to suggest that I can work with location scouts for good locations in Riemaia and New Edom for the film shoots, which would be inexpensive but high in quality.

Thank you again, and much affection,
Olivia Lalery

Aunt Claire,

I'm getting fed up with you bringing up that thing about the apron and the bikini. Please don't send things like this to my place of business anymore. I am not a maid or your servant. Yes, you can heave a leather bound collector's edition of the Witch of Padria. I know it's a hot book--I wrote it. I'll see you next time I come over with Rebecca and Mara.

Postby Belfras » Sat Feb 04, 2012 11:16 am

Good evening.

Allow me to first introduce both myself and the reason of which I write to you this fine day. I am Ryo Kentoss, a Minister for the Belfrasian Government and head of the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport. In 2004 His Majesty King James, our sovereign, ratified a petition that passed the Peoples Senate for more freedom in literature. This move calls on the Government to select a few authors of whom are of note and to supply their literature to the many different bookstores in the Kingdom and its overseas territories.

With that in mind, our panelists have agreed that yourself and your books represent the pinnacle of Romantic Literature today, a view that members of the royal family agree with. Thus, in accordance with both our nations laws and order of the Princess Royal, I humbly issue a purchase order for fifty-thousand paperback editions of each book currently in circulation, amounting to a total of $4,196,500 to be made payable should the order be successful.

A second request is for Olivia Lalery herself to attend a two-week visit to the Kingdom to promote her books and take part in the Christine Deverhert Festivals. Christine Deverhert was a 15th century author who made literature in Belfras as popular as it is today, and in her honour we hold a festival once every five years in the capital for people to advertise their books. Our last festival had an attendance of 5,882,486 people, minus security guards who took time off to make purchases.

Should our offer be accepted we would be paying for Olivia to arrive via first-class on an airline of her choice to Portsdown. VLT L6s are available at each city to Chauffeur Olivia and up to five people of her choosing from the airports to the hotel. Subsequently they will take Olivia and her friends anywhere else they may desire when not participating in the arranged events. Nation Name: The Pansentient Queendom of Ganosia
Publishing House: Wiseman's Publishing (The CEO of Wiseman's Publishing is proud to beat all others to the chase here with getting you published with his house.)
Bookstore Chain: All bookstores and libraries across Ganosia and the colonies.
Book Titles Wanted: All the books Miss Lalery has written. As well as all future ones she may write down the road.
For Book: We request 1000 copies of each in paperback edition for every bookstore in the Ganosian Empire and the colonies. We also would like to be enabled to publish translations of them in all languages within Ganosia. Can you imagine that? Not only in Ganosian, but in many other languages? Tis the gift of a multicultural populace. We also request one copy of each book in hardcover form for Her Majesty Queen Quinn I of Ganosia, for she is a huge fan of Miss Lalery's works. I cannot put into mere words the utter excitement Her Majesty has with every single one of your books. If she could have your works signed by the author herself, well, that would be just brilliant. We will pay all that is needed to ensure a speedy transaction.

The Official Royal Letter from Queen Quinn I of Ganosia to Miss Olivia Lalery:

Miss Lalery!

I'm a huge fan of your works! It's amazing how you're so able to capture the essence of romance! I really liked that story about Claudia. I could never find myself torn between any other man and my husband but you made me bite my nails in anticipation if she would! But usually I always end up anticipating the next chapter of all of your works! The salon I go to is always talking about how your works should be made into movies and television shows. But unfortunately I don't have any knowhow about how either process works! So I'm hoping some enlightened soul will get down to making adaptations right away! I expect many Ganosians will buy all your books and treasure them.

I've already been able to get my Nekomini maid, Steffy, to read them. By the way, I should warn you about something important. My sister Lilith....well, expect some very lewd fanmail coming your way soon. The picture of you they used in the Fineberg Times has really gotten Lilith interested in you. On a side note, it's hard having maids do their work with her around because they either keep disappearing or reporting to me constantly about her antics.

I should also highlight that my....cousin, Beatrice, enjoys your works as well. If you could sign my copies of your esteemed books for me before you send them, you would make me the happiest sovereign. We should have tea together some day. Don't worry about Lilith. I'll keep her away if need be.

Signed,
Quinn,
The Queen of Ganosia

To: Ryo Kentoss, Minister for the Belfrasian Government and head of the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport
From: Olivia Lalery

Dear Mr. Kentoss,

First of all, let me express the deep sense of honor and delight I felt at receiving your letter. The proposed trip is one I am very excited about, and I gladly accept. I am truly honored to be invited to your most celebrated literary festival for an author who has had such an effect on literature throughout Xanadou. It is sobering to think that she was writing when few people in what is now New Edom could even read and write outside of the clergy.

I would like to throw in a bonus of my own--exclusive to this festival I would like to do a reading of an exerpt from my new book, yet to be published: The Crashing Shore. It will be the first public reading that has taken place.

I will usually be traveling with a small group of people that would be no more than six, so I hope that that is acceptable. Again, my deepest thanks for your kind letter. Please convey my respects to His Majesty the King and to the other Ministers and members of government who have endorsed this agreement.

Sincerely,
Olivia Lalery

To Whom It May Concern,

Thank you very much for your order of my books! I am so excited to hear that my books will be translated into every language in Ganosia! My only stipulation is that I should be able to approve final copies of translations to make sure that the words convey the sentiments. I believe that there are many ways to say "I love you" but that in every language the way of demonstrating love is the same.

I can scarcely convey my honor at having Queen Quinn as a fan, and will gladly sign the copies of the books she would like.

with much affection,
Olivia Lalery

To Her Majesty Queen Quinn I of Ganosia,

I don't know if you remember me being presented to you, Ma'am, but I was one of King Mark's courtiers when he was still alive, and I was one of several ladies being presented to you; I was the red head attending Princess Rebecca. I am very honored that you are one of the fans of my books. I am marketing for my books to be made into films--I'd prefer made for TV on a good channel that is without commercials or unecessary censorship, as it is hard to make a movie out of book without cutting a LOT of it out.

I will be happy to sign the copies of the books you asked for, and please don't worry. For some reason with all the lesbian chic going on I sometimes have women running after me. As a fairly recent widow I am recovering from mourning my husband, and I am also just now starting to see a gentleman I'm very happy with so far. I would be delighted to talk over tea about it sometime.

respectfully yours,
Olivia Lalery

    Subject: Hello!.

Hello there!

My name is Clara Lili Belrose, although you can call me Clara! I really like your modern love novels, especially The Cafe in Sterry!

I am sending you this letter because I just want to let you know that I am a big fan of your books! My mum is the Head of Treasury and Capital Markets Division and one of the Group Chief Executives of the Yohannesische Bundesbank... That is why I used her letterhead, template and signature, including the Bundesbank template, so that I can personally send you this letter myself!

I hope you will read this letter for I really admire your work... And I cannot wait to read your next work! Also, please don't tell my mum and her friends at work that I am using this template... Or I will be grounded for two weeks!

Best wish!
Your fan
Clara

  Dear Ms. Olivia Lalery,

I am writing this letter to inquire about the possibilities for the film production of one of your finest works, the Witch of Padria. I am Mar Wesley, a film producer with GSE Pictures. I have enjoyed the book extremely, and it is one of those fantasy novels that one returns to, both for the dynamic characters and for the rich, detailed world. I am confident that the Witch of Padria, as a film, will perform spectacularly for viewers, GSE Pictures, and yourself.

I've already taken the liberty of talking to my superiors and the penny-pinchers at the GSE financial department, and they were willing to give us a total production budget of US$ 150 million dollars! We believe that we can make the Witch of Padria into a movie within 18 months. Although the general principle of the movie-making industry is 'don't let writers onto sets because the last thing you need is some diva around who'll kick up a stink when you need to change something', for the Witch of Padria I, as the director, would love to invite you to come to Meridian City and discuss this project, as well as to keep you in the loop about how the movie is coming along.

I know that as a world-renowned romantic novelist your schedule must be tight, but I do hope you can find the time to come visit me and GSE Pictures in Meridian City next Friday. Enclosed is a return ticket, first class, to the Meridian City International Aerodome (MCIA). I hope that we can work together on this great opportunity!

  Sincerely yours,
  Mar Wesley
