In 1934, a young entrepreneur named Casey McKay founded Tolten Automotive Incorporated, an automobile company devoted to both cheap cars for the masses and expensive cars for the well off. His initial funding came partly from inheritance money from his uncle, the founder of Union Shipbuilding, and from private investors. His first model, the Akron, was a cheap, reliable sedan. The Akron is still produced today, with a new model coming out yearly. While companies like National Automotive were making cheaply made, quick to break down junkers, Tolten cars like the Akron were lasting for decades. By 1960, eight cars made up the Tolten line. These cars varied from roadsters, to sedans, to VIP cars. In 1964 however, the national economic recession caused the line to shrink to only the Akron and the Avalon, the company's top selling roadster.
After the recession, the company managed to bounce back. Sales soared for the rest of the decade, and Tolten overtook all of the competition. The 1970's were a golden age for Gorodnopian autos, and Tolten cars were leading the way. Muscle cars like the Atlas roared down the highways of the nation, while sedans like the Akron were loved by the middle class. But when the Gordonopian Oil Crisis of 1981 hit, a second time of hardship came for the company. Once abundant cars like the Atlas were seen as wasteful, and the line shrunk to a mere four models, the Avalon, the Akron, the new Aurora, and the Arrow. But like its emergence from the '64 recession, the company came out strong from the oil crisis, and maintained its top spot. Through the 80's, Tolten cars were everywhere, and the company controlled a dominating 45% market share. This dominance would not last long, as new competitors like Lariat Motors and old foes like National Automotive scraped away at Toltens market dominance. By the mid 1990's, Tolten and its 12 car line controlled only 15% of the market share, a third of what it had in the 80's. That was when the corporate leadership decided it was time for something new. The Tolten cars were made sleeker, and stronger then their counterparts, and the public loved it. Tolten gained headway and by the end of the decade, the company was back up to 26%. Throughout the 2000's, Tolten has introduced three new models, and sold tens of millions of cars. In 2007, the decision was made to go global, and so for the 2009 model year Tolten released four of our most popular cars to the world market: The Tolten Aurora, the sleek, efficient, and low priced sedan introduced in the late 70's, the Avalon, Tolten's premier roadster, the Akron, our original car, and the Axiom, Tolten's SUV. Now for 2010, Tolten has added onto that line. The Tolten Apollo, Gordonopia's premier luxury sedan, has now been released to the world market. The Apollo will soon be followed by an additional two vehicles, the Tolten Atlas, a reboot of the classic 70's muscle car, and the Tolten Arrow, the most powerful pickup in United Gordonopia.
