The Ruben Rodriguez International Airport

The Ruben Rodriguez International Airport is a joint civil-military public airport located in Carolina, Libre Borinquen, three miles (five kilometers) southeast of San Juan.

The airport was constructed on September 25, 2010, and opened on December 17, 2010 to International flights. It was the first time that Libre Borinquen construction workers had build something, and architecture Ramon Beristain was responsible for the outlook. He recieved the National Honor Medal Award, and the construnction workers recieved heavy pay.
The airport has three runways: 25L/13R - 2,995m (10,285ft), 25R/15L - 2,850m (10,220ft), and 05/21 - 3,262m (13,091ft) - they are large enough to accommodate most commercial and military aircraft.

The Ruben Rodriguez Airport has one main terminal building which caters for International operations, and has a total of 40 gates:

Transportation:
The Airport is exactly next to the Highway I-23, which circles the island completely. Regular bus services are found at the airport, with services every 30 minutes. Buses leave from the airport all the way to the capital, and from the capital to the airport. A limited number of taxis are also available at both terminals.


Security:
Security in the airport is made by the National Police, and a few Military soldiers. Passenger screening is performed using x-ray machines, walk through and hand held metal detectors, explosive trace detection systems with random and continuous explosive detection tests of passengers and carry-on bags. International passengers are also security screened before they board any connecting domestic flights. Passengers and visitors to the airport also have an important role to play in aviation security and contribute to our multi-layered security approach. Security awareness signs, posters and public announcements are designed to convey important security information to passengers and visitors and encourage the reporting of security concerns.
