The Ruben Rodriguez International Airport is a joint civil-military public airport located in Carolina, Libre Borinquen, three miles (five kilometers) southeast of San Juan.
The airport was constructed on September 25, 2010, and opened on December 17, 2010 to International flights. It was the first time that Libre Borinquen construction workers had build something, and architecture Ramon Beristain was responsible for the outlook. He recieved the National Honor Medal Award, and the construnction workers recieved heavy pay.
The airport has three runways: 25L/13R - 2,995m (10,285ft), 25R/15L - 2,850m (10,220ft), and 05/21 - 3,262m (13,091ft) - they are large enough to accommodate most commercial and military aircraft.
The Ruben Rodriguez Airport has one main terminal building which caters for International operations, and has a total of 40 gates:
