I will be considering remaking my Metatrime story, which revolves in this manner:
The Milky Way Galaxy is split up into three dominating factions - the Metatrime, the Assulad, and the Yergel. Each are powerful galactic players in their own right, but the Metatrime and the Assulad are the major powers. Centuries ago, there was a great war that engulfed the galaxy, resulting in the rise of the Metatrime as the hegemonic empire in the galaxy. A humanoid, though highly advanced and well-developed species, the Metatrime were tall and lithe, though flexible and capable of resisting many strains of biological warfare after significant time spent with their Yergel counterparts. It is their position to expand and command others that made the Metatrime the premier power in the galaxy.
After the war, territory within the galaxy was split, with our system falling into Metatrime ownership. They had not even bothered to see if we existed - it didn't matter to them.
However, there was a threat lurking beyond the rims. Coming hard onto the Yergel empire were a group of marauders that have been labelled as the Engar, a group of centipede-like robotic monstrosities that consume planets for their resources and materials and harvest organic beings for their mineral-rich liquids. Destroying the Yergel, the Engar immediately move to attack the Assulad. Immediately beset with considerable force, the Assulad call upon the Metatrime for assistance, upon which the Metatrime do so, under the condition that the Assulad place themselves under Metatrime command.
The Metatrime Empire, thereby, has gone to war against the Engar. However, it seems to be much more difficult than they expected, and eventually their resources are already being drained to the brink of desperation.
This is where the thread begins. The Metatrime have found out that Earth, after scouring their holdings for resources, carries a significant exploitable organic population. In other words, potential soldiers. So they send a diplomat.
The story will begin with the diplomat, who has taken possession of a young businessman, to be thrown into an asylum, where he languishes. The Metatrime, taking this as an affront to their honor, decide to immediately send a fleet to discuss matters with the humans. However, since neither race speaks the other's language, the sight of immense Metatrime flagships upon an MT / PMT Earth is immediately frightening. Shoot first, ask questions later.
The whole story revolves around the politics of higher powers than us - the Metatrime want us to fight for them, but they are also willing to glass us to prevent us being harvested by the Engar. We, on the other hand, have no idea what is going on, and the suddenness of this foe puts everyone on edge without research to follow. In a sense, there is a looming apocalyptic feel to it all - even if we do push them offworld, it means they'll likely glass us to prevent us being harvested. Therefore, it's not only a war against more advanced beings, but also a deftly and very carefully played game of timing in politics.
