There was a noticeable change in the atmosphere within the Reich recently. To the outside world there was nothing significant to report about the Reich's overt militarism and jingoistic, belligerent rhetoric. To them it was simply the norm. However, if one was on the inside and one was paying close enough attention over the last few years, then they would notice the small changes. Factories were producing more munitions, armament, equipment than normal. There was an increase in the number of military drills and conscription was more tightly enforced than usual. The quality and quantity of general luxury and consumer goods was lower as more and more thought, energy, and resources were prioritized for military.

To the outside world this was nothing new. In fact, this was to be expected. They expect the militarism and the oppression that came from the Reich. What they did not expect was for the Reich to act upon those feelings. The war drums were always beating quietly in the background where the dark storm raged and surged, but it registered as little more than an afterthought in the minds of the various leaders of Esquarium. The insane ramblings and ravings of the Reich become a joke amongst the liberal democracies of Esquarium. Show hosts, comedians, the citizenry, and even politicians would take their time to make a joking jab at the Teutonic Reich in Nordania.

The build up was done slowly and cautiously so as not to bring unwanted attention to the Reich. The Supreme Warlord and undisputed leader of the nation, who held a mystic and totalitarian hold over his people, Führer Friedrich Ulrich, would bid his time until his opportunity came. That opportunity was the most recent wave of terror attacks striking the Nordanian continent. The Nordanian National Socialist Front unleashed a wave of terror and death upon Vjaarland, Lyonsland, Arkiasis, and countless innocents. It certainly wasn't the greatest of opportunities, but it was one nonetheless. The enigmatic Führer used the Vjaar accusation against the Reich stating it had supported the terrorists as a "diplomatic insult casus belli" (despite knowing full well he had ordered the Sicherheitsdienst to provide minute aid and intelligence to the Front[/i]). Mobilization was issued to the Wehrmacht and orders were given and years of build up had come to full fruition. The drums of war which could not be heard were now heard across Esquarium, beating with the sound of each footstep as soldiers, tanks, planes, and citizens marched on onward to war.

Führerhauptquartier Hellenberg

"Gentlemen, good morning!"

The various marshals and generals crowed over the operations table turned at attention to the doorway where their Supreme Commander, Führer Friedrich Ulrich, was coming in. He was flanked by SS-Reichsführer Rudolf Thaler and Parteikanzler Udo Rehm. The Supreme Warlord's expression was joyous and optimistic of the whole situation. The Army officers gave the customary party salute which the Führer was owed, in his capacity as head of the reich and of the armed forces.

"Heil Führer!"

To which Ulrich waved them off.

"I trust you gentlemen have everything planned out and ready to go?"

The leading officer of the group, Generalfeldmarschall Kurt Manteuffel, head of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, spoke up.

"Yes, my Führer. Everything is in order and we are standing by for your orders."

Ulrich gave a small smile and nodded slightly muttering 'Good, good'. Then he walked over to the operations table that had laid out on it reports of varying matters in regards to weather, supply situation, orders, intelligence, and a large map showcasing the units in play and their planned movements. He pulled out a pair of spectacles and leaned over the table in the center to overlook the operation.

"As you can see, my Führer, Army Group North under Generalfeldmarschall Oskar von Thoma will lead the main charge into Vjaarland. From there Two army detachments will break off and move towards Strendhaven to assist our Estovnian allies and encircle the Vjaar forces there. The rest of our armies will keep the push towards the west until a stable frontline can be reached. We have several artillery divisions providing support, including our railway artillery guns which are still being move into place. Several fighter and bomber wings will also be provided to give our men aerial coverage and ground support."

Ulrich maintained his silence as he continued looking over the map, occasionally tracing his hand over the various troop movement lines. Then finally he stood back up and removed his spectacles.

"Good, very good. Well then, gentlemen. Continue with your plans and bring the Reich great victory. I have full trust and confidence in your abilities to crush these inferior Vjaars like the vermin they are."

Operation Citadel was a go.

Presidential Palace, Strandhavn, Vjaarland

The door to the cabinet room swung open as President Freja Adlerberg stormed into the room. Not a word was spoken as she maneuvered over to her seat at the head of the table, with only the sound of her heels clicking against the hardwood floor to break the deafening silence. Adlerberg wore a visibly troubled expression on her still youthful face, knowing full well that any decision she made now could impact the fate of an entire continent. The door slammed shut with a loud thud, signalling the start of the meeting.

“Alright,” said Adlerberg, her booming voice filling the room, “now that we’re all here, let’s get down to business. General Vyrund, what can you tell us about our current military situation in regards to the...present crisis?”

The general promptly rose from his seat on the opposite end of the table and strode over to the front of the room. He placed his briefcase near where the president was seated and removed a stack of papers, giving each person at the table a copy of the document.

“As you will see in my report,” began the general, “all VDF active, reserve, and militia forces have been fully mobilized. The First, Second, and Third Armies, which are responsible for the defense of our borders with Teutonia and Estovnia, contain approximately two-thirds of our total ground forces, including the majority of our armored formations. At present they contain a total of 18 divisions, including 10 infantry, 5 mountain, and 3 armored divisions.”

Vyrund again reached for his briefcase, pulling out a considerably large rolled map no less than five fod wide. He spread the map out across the table, revealing a detailed terrain map of Vjaarland proper. It had been visibly marked with symbology representing the various Vjaarlandic formations across the nation, as well as suspected Iron Pact units across the eastern border.

“Our primary objectives,” Vyrund continued, “during the initial phases of an Iron Pact invasion will be to hold the choke points in eastern and northern Elsfold, as well as in southwestern and southeastern Akermark. Should we be overrun, our forces will retreat into the Geisdalen and Akermark and establish defensive positions along the Vjaarelva. We will then concentrate on holding the Helmstad-Trømby-Voldby and Ytterstad choke points, as well as the cities of Kilvik and Bønnfest in order to repel an Iron Pact offensive towards Strandhavn.”

"And should the Teutonians cross the Vjaarelva?" asked the president.

The general hesitated for a moment, visibly shaken by the question. He turned back to the map and motioned towards the Fjølden mountains with his trembling hand.

"If Iron Pact forces successfully cross and overrun our defenses along the Vjaarelva," Vyrund responded, his voice noticeably quieter and less confident than usual, "then we fight them in the mountains."

Adlerberg's eyes widened as she audibly cleared her throat. It was nothing short of sickening to think of the sheer carnage that would ensue during an extended armed conflict in one of Esquarium’s most rugged and dangerous mountainous regions. This much was hardly in question, if the lessons of the Fjølden War were to be remembered. Although she herself was not even two years of age during the conflict, Adlerberg's uncle was one of the 1,753,000 young men and women serving in the Vjaarlandic Defense Force during the late spring of 1974, fighting with the 8th Mountain Division for over three weeks in the extreme altitudes and terrain of the Fjølden. It was in these same mountains that a lone bullet ended his short life mere hours before the ceasefire went into effect.

The president nodded, staring silently at the map for several seconds before turning back to the general.

“Alright,” began Adlerberg. “Our only option now is to watch, wait, and remain fully prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any threat. Before we depart, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to remind you that the situation we find ourselves in is a matter of no less than our very survival. We have absolutely no room for error. I’ll be damned if I let this confederation fall into the hands of a raving madman. Am I understood?”

A nod of approval swept through the room.

“Excellent,” Adlerberg continued. “Best of luck to all of you, God knows we’ll need it.”

((Crappy intro but i'll expand on it later))

Karlamót Building, Norðvík
Karl Magnússon sighed. The sky was a bright shade of grey, but no visible sun was in sight. Snow crunched beneath his feet as he made his way into the Karlamót building. In front of the building, in a small circular grassy island, flew a large flag on a silver pole. The flag featured a white cross on a blue background, owing to the nation's Christian and nordic heritage. More importantly, it was a symbol of the Fjallandic republic, established in 1863 during it's independence from Vjaarland. Two older men in suits greeted him with a bow of the head as entered inside. He had much on his mind as he rode the elevator up to the 4th floor, where his office was situated.

There had been an uneasy peace between Vjaarland and Fjalland since the the Fjølden War, and now it seems that peace would have to be put through the test. The Teutonians have launched a surprise attack on Vjaarland, and now it is very likely that the two rivals will come to clashing arms, potentially dragging Fjalland into the battle. Karl Magnússon knew that the war would be unpopular with Fjallanders, and that the desire for isolationism was stronger than that of interventionism. But for the security of his people, Magnússon had to put his duties above appeasement, even if it may cost him his position. For he had made a constitutional oath upon taking office that he would protect the nation from all threats, foreign and domestic. Furthermore, due to Fjalland's participation in the Northern Sea Defense Organization, Fjalland is legally obligated to assist Vjaarland if it came under attack. However, the Fjallandic military was severally outdated and ill-equipped to take on a juggernaut like Teutonia. At most, the Fjallanders would only be able to send Vjaarland piecemeal support. Still, they could use any support Fjalland can give, for if Vjaarland falls - so would they.

Kramden House, Cabinet Room. 4:30 PM Monday External Affairs Review
Huddled together with the Vice President, President Feld and External Affairs Secretary Kansky paid fading attention as she wound up her monthly status of Antarctic Treaty Orginzation activity.

"...and Dr. Krishnamurthy also reports production ready ratings on sub-zero submerged pumps from several domestic producers. These have been tested in this month's most severe pack ice in western Kerguelen Bay, and pending ATC Energy Development office approval, should be available for use in South State's near offshore gas field development. Local authorities there have given the go-ahead, and we can expect deliveries up to Charleroi as soon as mid-2018. There are several exporters interested in shipment of liquefied product, so the investing parties at Kerguelen can expect cash flow sooner than if we hadn't offered those export licenses. Overall, it looks good!"

Vice President Davidoff smiled at her boss, then Secretary Kansky, and closed the folder.

President Feld sighed, and looked straight at External Affairs Secretary Kansky.

"Vern", he intoned, "Let's hear what you have on this Nordania business. So far it seems like a lot of saber rattling. DIO reports have been inconclusive. What do you hear from our sources on the ground in Strandhaven? Any requests from the Vjaar's so far?"

Kansky addressed the President directly, and to the point. "No, no calls for material just now. Both sides seem to be fully loaded, staring at each other across the border. Our embassy has a notification on standby ready to issue to Cedarbrookese nationals in Vjaarland to evacuate themselves from any war zone to the capital, in case of hostilities. I think most of our citizens there are aware of the risks, and from what I've heard they're pretty much removed from the Teutonia border. Now, as requested, I had Army and Air Force logistics survey what available, and surplus weaponry and ordinance could be made available to the Vjaar Armed Forces in the event of a breakout of fighting. So far mostly light arms, some construction equipment. And I've asked our aerospace contractors, headed up by General Electric Cedarbrook", at which Vice-President Davidoff, a former GEC Manager smiled wanly, "to tool up to provide replacment parts for the VAF's more advanced engines. Response has been positive at this point. DIO is, as always, cooperating with Vjaar signal and cyber intelligence, us providing development, them taking the lead on network infiltration. I think the DIO will provide updates on progress there on request.

Now, as you requested Mr. President, I've asked Ambassador Stachewicz to discreetly broach the issue of West Cortoguay isolation to SOE in the event of open warfare. I know, you weren't pleased with the Entente's activity to inhibit those commies from calling in the spikeheads during last year's Lazarene Crisis, and I think this year will be different. With all due respect to the SOE, they know we'll carry the load if we have to, and I've repeatedly made clear to the members that since we committed in Lecistan, we're not about to let West Corto be a cat's paw for any openly hostile regime. Yes, I know, any unilateral action could be a sore point for the lefty's in September, not to mention Harry Kaplan. As long as you're running interference in the Senate, Mr. President, I'm sure we can handle any incipient problem on continent. And it looks like Lou Steinberg is pretty much sitting on Harry Kaplan in this year's campaign."

"Fuck Kaplan", snorted the President.

Foreign Minister Talks Teutonia Embassy Crisis, Pisdara Land Reform & More
IN PRESS CONFERENCE, REMY MICHEAUX ADDRESSES SEVERAL BREWING CRISES AROUND THE WORLD

HUIMONT - In an unprecedented move, Foreign Minister Remy Micheaux summoned an early-morning press conference at the Foreign Office to clarify the Aininian position on several pressing global crises and events. In the extraordinary briefing, Micheaux addressed several hot-button issues, including the Nordanian crisis, a land reform bill in the Pisdari legislature and the escalation of Ankoren's campaign against the Caliphate. STA has prepared a digest of the press conference.

Teutonia: "Respect for diplomatic norms is essential"

For the past few weeks, Teutonian officials have barred the staff of foreign embassies from exiting their respective diplomatic compounds, ostensibly for their own safety. In addition, officials have alleged that the Teutonian government has refused to deliver official correspondence and cargo to the embassy, effectively cutting them off from the outside world.

In his statement, Micheaux broke with longstanding Aininian policy of appeasement towards the Iron Pact and came out forcefully against the restrictions, which he called a "siege." While he confirmed that ambassador Maxime Langevin and all staff remained safe and accounted for, he also lashed out at Teutonia for "cripping (the embassy's) operations" by prohibiting diplomatic correspondence and noted the possibility of the travel prohibitions "hindering emergency medical care" for embassy personnel.

He declared that the Teutonian government had "shown a callous disregard for the very foundations of international diplomacy" and reminded it of its obligations under international norms towards diplomats. He further added, "a failure to respect the rules of international order (...) are an invitation for anarchy on a global stage."

Upon being asked by a reporter for the Devoir about Teutonia's proclamation of a submarine blockade against Vjaarland, he declared that "Ainin respects no blockade and will continue to operate in waters that it is lawfully entitled to operate in. The Aininian Navy will protect the freedom of navigation wherever it is challenged."

Pisdara: "Deep concern" at fast-track land reform bill

The Pisdari Patriotic Front, a coalition of nationalist parties in the Pisdari legislature, recently placed second in legislative elections held across the island by popular vote. However, due to a quirk in the Pisdari constitution, it ended up in control of half the Pisdari executive cabinet. Baba Naram-Sin, leader of the controversial New Pisdari Liberation Front party, recently used his position to table a land reform bill that would see 50 square kilometres of mostly Aininian-owned lands seized and redistributed to locals by 2020. While the bill is not expected to pass as moderates hold a majority of seats, it has raised major concern in Ainin. Loup-CGT, a textiles company seen as deeply invested in Pisdara, has seen its stock value drop by 7.2% in the past week.

In his statement, the Minister declared that "a government cannot engage in economically reckless actions without expecting consequences." He added, "investor confidence is directly proportional to the ability of the Pisdari government to create an atmosphere conducive to business and to protect private property from undue seizure." He hinted that the Ł42 million in Aininian funding to offset deficits in the Pisdari government may be revoked in the event of "severe transgressions against property rights."

However, Micheaux also tried to portray a reconcilliatory tone. He offered to negotiate with Aininian businesses on the island to increase wages and working conditions and promised a full, transparent investigation into alleged abuses in Aininian-owned factories in Pisdara, which labour rights activists have alleged to be sweatshops.

Ankoren: "Welcome partner in fight against Caliphate"

In recent months, Ankoren has joined in the fight against the Caliphate and launched an offensive into Southern Irvadistan that has severely diminished Caliphate power in the region. However, foreign policy experts have warned that the Ankoreni government was using this opportunity to "expand its influence in Nautasia" and that it risked further eroding the authority of the government of Irvadistan. "I frankly cannot see any scenario whereby the Ankorenis would withdraw from Irvadistan after combat operations end," University of Talon professor Michel Saint-Germain told STA.

Three days ago, the Iron Pact nation of Estovnia announced its intentions to back the Ankoreni offensive, causing alarm bells to ring in many capitals of the so-called "Free World." Micheaux finally broke Huimont's sphinxian silence by declaring Ankoren a "welcome partner in the fight against the Caliphate and the evil it represents." However, insiders allege that the reality was very different and that Micheaux was privately outraged, going so far as summoning a secret consultation with other ETO leaders under the collective security clause.

However, his tepid endorsement of Ankoreni operations demonstrates Huimont's acceptance, or at least resignation, towards Ankoren's newfound role in continental affairs.

Teutonic-Vjaar front

The ~9,300 men of the 1. SS Panzer-Division Leibstandarte SS Friedrich Ulrich, the most senior and elite of the Waffen-SS divisions, stood ready and waiting for the word to advance. Although this was the location of their permanent base, they had been recently mobilized and instructed to stand by for advancement orders from the Army High Command. The 1. SS Panzer was one of 4 Waffen-SS division spearheading the assault into Vjaarland, a land described by the Teutonic propaganda ministry as ruled by Jewish oligarchs who were exploiting a Germanic people into death and extinction. It was driven into the heads of these young men (and some women, notable the medical corps) that it was their duty to liberate these tormented people from Jewish exploitation.

The division's commanding officer, SS-Gruppenführer Franz Brachat, had recently called all lower level regimental and support unit commanders to the higher divisional headquarters to relay and coordinate newly incoming orders from High Command. Brachat was trained only to the highest of standards and quality, but was not experienced in any forms of actual warfare (excluding training simulations). He, like most officers of the Waffen-SS, were chosen for their political and ideological loyalty and fanaticism due to the NSDAP's belief that an ideological fanatic and driven combat force will be an efficient and capable force against their enemies. However, the practical application of this policy leaves many within the Wehrmacht weary of working with the Waffen-SS.

Soon, all regimental and support unit commanders had arrived and made their way around the war table, where Brachat stood center. The table had the usual displays of maps and documents detailing supply, units, orders, and the like concerning the strategic and tactical operations of the war. Under his left arm was a manila folder with papers poking from the insides.

"Gentlemen'', Brachat began ,''thank you all for coming.'' He pulled the manila folder out from under his arm and displayed it out on the table.

"I have been given word by Generalfeldmarschall von Thoma that our assault begins. We will be operating alongside the 5. and 7. SS Panzergrenadier-Division, 2. SS Panzer-Division and the 1. Armee under Generalfeldmarschall von Brandt as the spearhead of this invasion."

Brachat's Chief of Staff moves the several documents and maps on the table and places a close-up map of the immediate area of operations concerning the division.

"Our objective is a simple one. We are to secure the city of Hellastad along the Vjaarelva. High Command has confirmed that we have been allotted access to call in rail artillery support, elements of the 77th Independent Artillery Division, and close air support. Priority is being given to us to secure the city as soon as possible. Once we have accomplished that, we are to hold tight and prepare for the second wave of advancement. We have the superior training and numbers, men, as well as our fervent commitment to our Fatherland and our Führer. Return to your posts and carry out these orders, we move out shortly."

All across the large expanse of land that was the Teutonic-Vjaarland border the pieces of war were moved into place. Panzers came to life and infantry embarked onto their trucks, moving towards the front lines. Artillery pieces, already prepositions, adjusted themselves to their respective target coordinates to begin their initial phases of bombardment. Air bases in the rear were buzzing with activities from ground personnel and flight crew manning their craft and taking to the skies to provide the close air support needed by troops on the ground, as well as to give Vjaar fighters some hesitance in filling the sky with their own aircraft.

In the home front, the factories were being stuffed full of workers to churn out the extra support equipment, clothing, supplies, munitions, vehicles, and tools required to wage this war. Propaganda had an incredibly marked increase in more bellicose rhetoric, encouraging the workers to produce twice as hard and twice as fast as than the Vjaars ever could to bring a glorious victory for the Fatherland and Führer. The war machine of the Reich was in full force now, and it would stop at nothing less than a total victory over its enemies.

Cabinet Meeting Room, Houses of the Uroctts, Ettsten

It was a typical early Thursday morning in Lyonsland's biggest city, quiet and calm, the odd car passing by and the few midweek drunks waddling their way through the many streets of the inner city. However, an uneasy mood had filled the air the past few weeks. Since the devastating attacks on the 3rd of June, the threat of violence and conflict has been high, not helped by the increased warmongering tone of Lyonsland's unfriendly neighbour to the northwest. Many, if not most people had become dismissive of an outbreak of conflict, believing that this was another piece to be added to the rather long list of Teutonic threats of war since Ulrich's rise to power in the economically unstable 1980's.

However, something was different this time. This wasn't just the surfacing of a propaganda cartoon depicting the annihilation of Ettsten, or a missile test, but the diplomatic fallout that followed the June attacks. After the NNSF claimed responsibility, President Freja Adlerberg of Vjaarland was adamant that Ulrich had funded and endorsed the terrorist campaigns, something that rattled the Teutonic regime. Johanna Carl was pretty confident in blaming Ulrich as well, but kept mostly quiet, not wanting to give him a casus belli. However, it had become apparent in recent days that Adlerberg's comments had given Ulrich that casus belli, and were preparing to attack Lyonsland's biggest military ally.

As the cars of the cabinet members began to pull into the grounds of the Uroctts, many within the cabinet were preparing themselves to be told the worst-case scenarios. None of them had any appetite for war whatsoever, in particular the pacifist Centre Alliance members, but they knew that if it came to a Teutonic invasion of Vjaarland that war would be inevitable. To many cabinet members' surprise, their opposites in the SDP's shadow cabinet were also filing into the building heading for a meeting of their own.

The cabinet entered the meeting room in almost complete silence, some of whom were disturbed by the 'new addition' - General Dirrmud Mac Carnn, High Commander of the Royal Lyonese Armed Forces. Whispering amongst the members ceased as Johanna Carl arose from her seat at the end of the table and she began to speak. "Colleagues, I have summoned you here from summer recess for an emergency meeting of the highest importance. As you should all be well aware, we face a very real and legitimate threat that poses a danger for our nation and many others around not only this continent, but the entire planet. I'm sure you have all met General Mac Carnn - General, what information have you gathered?" She asked formally, despite practically knowing of the situation in Vjaarland.

The general stood up with a nervous expression on his face. "Members, I have been in contact with both colleagues of mine in the VDF, as well as intelligence agencies here at home," he began, before pausing for a few seconds. "We have mounting evidence to suggest that Teutonic military forces are preparing an attack on the Vjaar border". With just one sentence, shivers were sent down the spines of all who were present at the table. Some buried their heads into their hands, some staring into the eyes of the prime minister and the general in complete shock.

Carl, with a distressed look on her face, stared seemingly at the wall as she asked the general: "What about our border, then? Are they planning an attack on our border?". The cabinet members stared back at General MacCarnn, preparing themselves to hear the worst-possible news. "Not that we know of, Prime Minister," Mac Carnn declared, the relief of the room both audible and visible. "However, I have ordered extra mobilisation on the border than what is currently there, I trust you, Mrs. Carl, that you understand that decision". "Of course, General," Carl replied. As the general sat back down, Carl arose once again. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is a critical situation. Let me be clear, we are not in a state of war at this moment, but I'm sure you all know that that is likely to change. Therefore, we must take action now. Shortly, I intend to meet with members of the High Council* to seek their approval to authorise a state of federal emergency. Last month, we declared a federal emergency after those appalling attacks, but this emergency is on a far greater scale" she announced, looking around at the nervous and shaken ministers.

"Those in favour of the proposal to seek approval for a state of federal emergency, say Aye", she asked. "Aye", the cabinet unanimously declared.

"Very well," Carl announced. "This meeting is dismissed". The ministers took their time to compose themselves, preparing to put their own lives on the line to keep the country from succumbing to an evil, fascist force.
* "High Council" is the term used to refer to Lyonsland's privy council.

28 July, 2016 - 09:00 hrs [ST+1]
Elsleben, Alemannic Social Democratic People's Republic
Popular Committee of National Unity and Security

(32° 53' 16" N, 13° 11' 21" E)

The government district of Elsleben was a colossal amalgamation of concrete and steel; a physical embodiment of the phrase ‘concrete jungle’. The tall buildings of the various committees rose high into the city’s skyline, giving the illusion of being able to touch the smog-filled sky that smothered and choked every major city within the Republic. Like a beehive, the workers for each committee milled about in seemingly rehearsed movements.

Rudi Kaplan was one of these workers. A short, portly man with thick-rimmed glasses, Rudi was, all things considered, completely average in both personality and appearance. Perhaps it was his averageness that landed him his job as an upper echelon liaison between his department and the committee’s standing members.

He could feel beads of sweat dripping from his armpits, the liquid gliding down his ribs and pooling around his waistline of his tucked in shirt. It was hot, even for only being quarter-to-nine. The smog didn’t really help with the heat, and in the mid-morning sun, cast a gloomy shade of brown over the city. With short, quick steps, he briskly walked from his parked car a block-and-a-half away to the Popular Committee National Unity and Security headquarters; pausing only briefly to readjust his procedure mask. The poor air-quality of Elsleben made such masks a necessity, at least for those wanting to protect themselves from the health-risks.

Slowly but surely, Rudi reached the building’s entrance. Climbing the stone steps, he arrived at the security checkpoint for entrance. It was a “standard” entrance, not too dissimilar from one a person would see at an airport. Three guards manned the checkpoint; the commanding officer being no older than his mid-20s.

Reaching into his pocket, Rudi drew his building I.D card and handed it to the commander.

”Supposed to be another hot one today” he said, his voice muffled under the procedure mask.

There was no reply, but Rudi expected that. He hated dealing with guards from the Wolf Grossman Wachregiment, the elite motorised rifles regiment under the command of the Popular Committee for National Security and Unity. Indoctrinated kids funnelled through the various youth programmes. Every paper had to be in place and had to be perfect, for even the smallest infraction would get you arrested and paraded in front of a revolutionary tribunal.

”Everything seems to be in order, Mr. Kaplan,” the guard said, handing Rudi back his identification card.

Nodding politely, Rudi tok the card and placed it securely back into his wallet. He placed his briefcase on the conveyor belt scanner and walked through the metal detector lining the doorway.

Retrieving his briefcase from the conveyor belt, he walked through the sliding glass doors and was greeted by a rush of crisp, cool air. It was relieving too him. The air conditioning made the place tolerable in the blistering summer months. Briefcase in hand, he continued his trek towards the briefing room, located at the far end of the hallway he was currently in. The place gave him the chills, but as a closeted-dissident that was to be expected. Fully knowing that this building contained a number of files on every single person in Alemannia and a number of foreigners, including nearly all diplomatic personnel on Embassy Row, made him feel uneasy. Perhaps the most troubling aspect Rudi had trouble accepting was that he was an active participant in the organisation. As a chief intelligence adviser, he was amongst the top informants to the Committee's standing personnel and considered one of the foremost experts on the geopolitical situation in Northern Artisia.

"Kamerad Kaplan?" an unfamiliar voice called out.

"Yes, I am him." Rudi replied to the unknown man.

"Joachim Loewe, I was assigned to assist you in your presentation this morning." He said cordially, shaking Rudi's hand.

Rudi studied the man in front of him. Joachim was tall and lanky, no older than 24. Judging by its loose fit, Rudi judged that Joachim's suit belonged to his father, who was probably 20 kg heavier than him.

"Well met," He replied, and motioned that they both continue their trek to the briefing room.

The first floor of building was a maze of cubicles and interview rooms. Rudi arguably hated walking through this floor the most. Each step past a cubicle gave the glimpse of a person's life, but ultimately it boiled down to the same thing: people informing on their spouses, friends, family members, and co-workers. They had no incentive, merely doing so out of pure devotion to the state and its ideology. He didn't understand it; telling personal, intimate secrets for no purpose other than a sense of falsely garnered patriotism.

Soon they arrived at the briefing room. The simple, wooden door slightly ajar to let the men know that they were free to enter. Pushing the door inwards, Rudi led Joachim into the dimly lit room and shut the door tightly behind him. The officials; totalling seven men and women, were sitting around a rectangular, oak table in the centre of the room. Behind the farthest end was a projector screen and easel for charts and graphs. Rudi placed his briefcase on the table, and after fumbling the combination lock, opened it. Handing the contents of the briefcase to Joachim, Rudi addressed the room's occupants.

"Good morning, Kameraden. What my associate is handing to you all is the latest intelligence from our field agents in Reutern and Strandhavn. As you can see, there is significant Teutonic build up on the Vjaarlandic border, our operatives estimate approximately 8 divisions are at least partially mobilised."

He paused momentarily and hooked up his laptop to the projector, loading and starting a powerpoint presentation which was then projected onto the screen.

"These satellite images from the Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung show significant materiel build up in several frontier military installations. As you can see in the handout, our operatives estimate 8 divisions mobilised across the Teuton-Vjaarlandic frontier. Signals intercepts indicate the presence of 4 Waffen-SS divisions and several support units on the frontier."

"And what of the VDF forces in the area?" a committee member asked.

"Signals intercepts of VDF communications show an estimated 14 divisions on the Teutonic frontier. We don't know the exact composition but we know that at least 5 are armoured divisions."

"What sort of defences do the VDF have along the border?"

Rudi didn't answer for a moment, instead clicking a button that moved the powerpoint to the next picture; a detailed map of small section of the Vjaarland border showing unit locations.

"One of our assets in the VDF happily gave us this detailed map of the Elsfold region, for a modest price of course. We're expecting Vjaarlandic forces to defend the choke points here and here."

"How long would they hold?"

"A few days. A week at the latest. Once the Teutonic forces cross the Vjaarelva, then I can confidently say would be the time for our forces to cross the Teutonic border."

"And how long would that take."

"Christmas at the latest."

He waited in silence as the committee members talked for a few moments amongst themselves. Taking a handkerchief out of the breast pocket of his button-down shirt, he wiped the sweat from his brow.

"I believe that will be enough for now. You are dismissed until our next meeting."

"Thank you." Rudi replied.

He packed up his briefcase, locked it, and exited the room.

10 km over Hellastad, Akermark, Vjaarland
1100 VST, 14 July 2016

It was the first cloudless night that Akermark had seen in nearly a week, and the bright lights of Hellastad’s central business district were clearly visible as Kaptajn Harald Fahlstrøm, callsign Sultan 1-1, glanced out the bubble canopy of his J 53A Lodjuret stealth fighter at the city below. The altimeter on his heads-up display showed an altitude of 10,000 meters, and he could just make out the two parallel runways at Hellastad Airport from his distant perch as the world sped past him at Mach 1.8. The once bustling destination appeared as any other major airport would, with the landing lights of incoming aircraft illuminating the bold runway markings as they approached. Gone, however, were the massive commercial jets, filled to the brim with excited tourists eager to tour the thousand year old city. An almost constant stream of military transports were the only air traffic to now frequent what was once Vjaarland’s fourth busiest airport, an eerie reminder of the crisis that the nation presently faced.

Fahlstrøm glanced at the nearly one-dozen contacts on his radar screen, flying in formation as they approached the border into Vjaarland. The lack of a reply to his IFF interrogation, as unreliable as the technology was, was sufficient to confirm that they were hostile, if that was ever in doubt to begin with. The 14 divisional anti-aircraft missile battalions and 43 brigade-level anti-aircraft batteries within the command structure of the 1st Army Group had already begun engaging the intruders, lighting up the sky as missiles from hundreds of Robotsystem 08 and Robot 14 systems streamed towards their targets. Now, it was the VAF’s turn to enter the fray.

The 39-year-old Kaptajn and his wingman were among the four Lodjuret fighters performing combat air patrols over southern Vjaarland on the night of 14 July. Airborne as well were twelve venerable J 46C Vilkatten air superiority fighters, the predecessor to the two-and-a-half-year-old Lodjuret and a jet that had served the country well for 40 years. Four E 28A Storken AEW&C aircraft circled deep behind the front lines, serving as the eyes for the fighters. The 20 aircraft were the first line of defense against the Teutonian aerial assault apart from the Army’s surface-to-air-weapons, and until the two fighter-interceptor wings at Jørhus Air Base and Hellastad Airport were able to scramble, the only.

“Langbue 4, this is Sultan 1-1,” Fahlstrøm radioed to the Storken in his sector. “Range to target is 240 kilometers, ETA two minutes.”

“Roger that, Sultan 1-1,” a crewman responded. “You are clear to engage.”

“Alright Adamsen,” Fahlstrøm called his wingman, “we’ve got exactly 10 Teutonian bombers inbound. We’ll try to splash as many as we can BVR and then move on whatever’s left with Robot 5s and 27 millimeters. And remember, we may be invisible to radar on paper, but don’t get cocky. These things still aren’t battle tested as far as I’m concerned. Now let’s make some fireworks.”

“Roger that, Kaptajn!” replied Adamsen.

The fighter lept in the air as Fahlstrøm pushed the throttle forward. Both aircraft sprinted towards the bomber formation, waiting until they were within 160 kilometers of their targets before engaging. The four Robot 9 long-range air-to-air missiles carried in the internal weapons bays of each fighter streaked from their pylons at Mach 5, downing a number of the Teutonian aircraft.

The engagement had begun without a hitch, but with their internal bays open the Lodjurets were now certainly visible to radar. Two Teutonian fighter escorts promptly pounced on Adamsen and Fahlstrøm, engaging them with air-to-air missiles. The first aircraft scored a direct hit on Adamsen's aircraft and sent it barreling towards the ground. Fahlstrøm turned and let a single Robot 5 fly from his left-side weapons bay, watching as it obliterated one of the enemy fighters. The second aircraft turned and ran back towards the border, managing to escape before Fahlstrøm was able to engage it.

The scene was similar across southern Vjaarland. Although the Vjaars managed to scramble most of their fighters and scored a significant number of air-to-air and surface-to-air kills during the engagement, the sheer number of hostile aircraft participating in the strike made losses inevitable. The attack rendered one of the runways at Jørhus Air Base temporarily unusable and caused substantial damage to Hellastad Airport. Several artillery positions, command and control centers, and radar installations had been ravaged by Teutonian airstrikes, and in many cases completely destroyed. 14 aircraft had been lost in air-to-air combat, including one of the VAF’s vital Storkens.

Southern Akermark

The situation on the ground was critical for the 300,000 men of the 1st Army Group. Under the cover of artillery fire and close air support, the four Teutonian SS divisions crossed the border into Vjaarland, immediately meeting resistance from elements of the Second Army. The Vjaars’ Stridsvogn 123 tanks fired their 120-millimeter rifled guns furiously at the Teutonians’ armored vehicles, destroying a number of them. Divisional and brigade-level artillery were inundated with requests for fire support, their Panserbandkanon 153 self-propelled howitzers and Rakettsystem 271 multiple rocket launchers firing salvo after salvo from behind the front lines.

The Vjaars held their ground throughout the night and into the next morning, relying heavily on the terrain to conceal armored vehicles and small teams of infantrymen armed with anti-tank missiles in the hopes of obscuring the front line and disorienting the Teutonians. But with only limited close air support from the embattled VAF and facing vastly superior numbers, the Vjaarlandic defenses began to crumble. The Teutonians broke through the Vjaarlandic lines and continued to advance throughout the afternoon, driving 20 kilometers into Akermark by nightfall.

Bruised by the assault, the Vjaars attempted to contain the Teutonian breakthrough. The 17th Infantry Division was moved to the front in order to reinforce the ailing Second Army. Small and highly mobile armored teams, ranging from platoon to company size, began to probe the Teutonian spearhead. Groups of Stridsvogn 123s and various reconnaissance vehicles, including the Panserterraengbil 104 and 105, launched brief incursions through enemy lines with the support of artillery, striking and moving rapidly in order to hamper the enemy’s ability to maneuver.

Just over 24 hours after the assault had begun, hundreds of Vjaarlandic soldiers had been killed and thousands more wounded. Civilian casualties, particularly from the bombing of Hellastad, ranged in the dozens. The Teutonians now controlled several hundred square kilometers of Vjaarlandic territory and were poised to advance even further, with tens of thousands of Wehrmacht soldiers pouring across the border by the hour.

Nordania was at war.
