”… Red Militia has claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks two days ago which claimed over eighty lives and injured hundreds more, the vast majority. Twin blasts rocked a pro-regime rally in Chaoqiu in the deadliest terror attack since 2002 which was followed up by several attacks on numerous army and police patrols near the Chen-Canton border. The communists have warned the Empire that this was just the beginning of the ‘liberation of the proletariat’ and that they wouldn’t stop at anything to bring about the downfall of the Chen Dynasty.

“The Empire, after promising swift retribution for the terrorists, sharply accused the Canton government under President Chin Tu Fat of harbouring the terrorist and actively supporting their activities, an accusation the government denies. According to the Chen military, the Canton border guard covered the terrorists as they escaped across the border, firing over thirty times at pursuing patrols. Canton in turn acknowledged that warning shots had been fired, but only in reaction to being shot at by Chen soldiers. It is known that the Chen Red Militia is supported by local Canton communists and has a network of training and command centers across the Canton mountains.

“Relations between Canton and China have been deteriorating and have just taken a turn for the worse with the recent terror attacks. China has repeatedly urged the Fat administration to eliminate the armed communist presence and while Canton has officially taken action against the terror threats, communist bases and strongholds of support have barely been touched and experts say the communist movement has just emerged stronger than never before…”

President Chin Tu Fat inhaled slowly, breathing in the carbon monoxide, nicotine and hundreds of other carcinogenic chemicals that he was sure would one day kill him. The majority of his cabinet had already filed in and the last few latecomers entered the room. Amongst them Generalleutnant Karl Ruprecht, the Wankan military attaché who had now become the de facto National Security Advisor for Fat’s government. Fat rose to greet him.

”Guten Nachmittag, Herr Ruprecht.” the President said, warmly shaking his hand.

”Nei hou, nei hou, Fat xin-xan?” Ruprecht responded, in the Yue native tongue. The lack of ethnic diversity here, too, was apparent. Two Han deputy ministers, and other than that, all Yue with the exception of several of Wankan descent. Ruprecht was Fat’s connection with Canton’s one historic ally, Wanka, and the influence he- and Sonneborn- held over his regime was remarkable. The relationship was one where benefit was mutual, however.

”M’goi sai.” (“Thanks”) he said as Fat pointed him to his seat. The Minister for Foreign Affairs began his presentation on the issue of today. It wasn’t about suppressing the communist movement, however. It was something darker.

“We have seen considerable, unusual activity by the Chen military. They’ve told us to destroy the communists, and if we won’t that, they’ve threatened to do it themselves, whether we’d like it or not.” he said in fluent German for the benefit of those present, although Ruprecht and the Han officials had been around long enough to learn the Yue dialect.

“It is a threat that they are capable and willing to going through with, and Herr Ruprecht’s office agrees. The question is, what will we do if they decide to attack us?”

“Attacking the communists is useless, we’ve tried and it will backfire. They have too much support in their strongholds.” said Fat. “We will also not simply sit back and let them roll over us. The damned Chinese have tried to bully us into submission for long enough, we must show them that we won’t bow to their insanity.”

All around the table, Fat’s comments was met with nods and murmurs of agreement. It reminded Ruprecht of Sonneborn’s leadership, where everyone practically agreed with whatever he said. The situation was similar; both were quasi-dictators and who could easily remove you if you pushed too far with your opinions.

“If they come looking for a fight, our only option is to resist with whatever we have. Anything else would mean suicide for the Canton Republic. What can we do to deter an invasion?”

“Mr. President, before we decide to escalate the situation, I believe it might be best if we try and look for a diplomatic solution and try avoiding bloodshed. The Chen leadership isn’t mad. I’m sure they’d rather not commit to war.” the Minister for Agriculture interrupted.

“Whether or not they will commit is out of control, but you have a point, of course we will look for a peaceful solution… within reason.” the Foreign Minister hastened to say.

“Agreed, I will leave that to you. Nevertheless,” Fat said, pointing to the Defense Minister, a short man named Ho Lee Fuk, “we must be prepared.”

“Yes. Ahem.” Fuk replied, bringing up a map of Canton for everyone to see. “As advised by the General Staff and General Ruprecht we can initially move the 2nd Mountain Brigade to Daming, the 22nd Mountain Brigade to Hejian, the 8th Mountain Brigade to Wuding and the 5th Armored Brigade to Henan.

“Furthermore, additional brigades will be put on high alert so that they can be moved at an instant. This is as far as we can go so as not to trigger some huge controversy, although our troops may encounter… problems when garrisoned in Kosa or communist dominated areas.

“In case of a surprise attack, the Huanghe river offers an excellent natural defensive barrier and can be defended from the opposite bank and from the Huangdi mountains. This will be our best chance at inflicting high casualties on Chen forces. We have also warned Hainanese, Manchu and Taichi commanders and they too will put their forces on alert.

“However, we cannot expect to have aerial dominance as our small air force is no match for theirs. It will be vital to heavily guard and control logistics centers such as Henan, Hejian, Tainan and Taiping. Any disruption to their roads or rail services will significantly deteriorate our ability to bring troops through the mountains from the west coast, so defending these will be an imperative.”

“That will do, Mr. Fuk. I approve of the plan.” said Fat, talking a while more before ending the meeting. He held back Ruprecht as the others filed out.

“I hope you won’t mind…” said Fat.

”Mo man tai. This takes precedence, of course.”

“The mobile surface to air missiles and MANPADs, can you speed up their delivery?” Fat said, his voice sounding dejected. “With what Mr. Fuk said about our air capabilities, I’ve a feeling that they might be sorely needed.”

“I will try.” Ruprecht replied. “Don’t expect much, however. We’re still cleaning up the mess that was Saxony. We still have an equipment shortage amongst combat ready troops, but it doesn’t look like as if war is going to break out again soon, so you might be in luck.”

“Thank you, thank you. I assume, because of Saxony, in case hostilities break out, Wanka won’t directly assist Canton?”

“We would defend our brothers and sisters here if we could, that is out of question. However, the present situation dictates that this will not be possible. The Wankan Air Force has taken a serious beating and will need to muster all aircraft available in case of any provocation by the Sylvans, and the same goes for the Army. We will, however, support in any other ways possible- intelligence, diplomatic, material and financial assistance, you can count on that. Sonneborn values our bond and will only help strengthen it.” Ruprecht said. “However, we- the Wankan High Command- is confident in Canton’s ability to come out on top in case of conflict. Especially if relations with local forces, the Kosa and the communists, could be improved if only to fight a common enemy.”

Doh zhae sai. It is good to know that we can rely on your help. As for the terrorist militias, I will take that into consideration. Desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose. Anyway, that will be all. Aufwiedersehen, Herr General.

The Kosa, maybe. The communists, never. If we’re forced into a bloodbath and come out alive, they will be the first to hang, the President said to himself.

Communists (Maoshan Alliance of the Revolutionary eXecutive- MARX)

Description:
MARX is the umbrella term for the Chen Red Militia and Cantonese Communist Party and propagate their marxist-leninist ideology. Due to the economic situation they have the widest array of support and recruitment numbers, but are at odds with the government who is actively seeking to suppress the movement. They can expect local support wherever they operate, except for the Nanshan mountains. The Chen Red Militia operates large training facilities in the Huangdi Mountains and Huanghe valley, which are prime targets of the Chen military.

Base: Shuntian
Ethnicities: (mainly) Han, Kosa, Hainan
Area of support: Support mainly from the poor, working class and farmers across the Huanghe valley and Huangdi mountains; various levels of support from across the nation
Available Manpower: 120,000+ fighters of the Chen Red Militia
Relations with Gov: Terrible; the communists have been responsible for unrest on the coast amongst the economically disenfranchised and are the reason for the Chen invasion. Expect no cooperation and no material support; government will actively clamp down on open recruitment or propaganda efforts.

Kosa Brigades

Description:
Kosa militias have existed for decades to protect Kosa communities from central government control and exercise considerable power over areas in which they are the majority. As a result, they have often suppressed local minorities and can expect resistance and resentment if they operate in areas outside of their bases. Their aims include independence or at least semi-autonomy, which has angered the central government. However, the government realizes that they can come in handy to resist any invasion.

Base: Taiping
Ethnicities: Kosa (pop ~4,000,000)
Area of support: Northern Huangdi mountains down to Henan, a Kosa-dominated city. Northern half of the Huanghe valley.
Available Manpower: 80,000
Relations with Gov: The enemy of my enemy is my friend; Kosa militias have on-and-off fought violent insurgencies against the Cantonese “occupiers” and various groups have made half-hearted attempts at independence. Expect only tacit cooperation and no material support.
Taken by Nova Sylva

Hainanese Army

Description:
Hainan militias have protected their own ultraconservative communities in turn, mainly from the Kosa, and the government has encouraged the formation of armed units to contain the Kosa. Can expect active resistance when operating in Kosa-dominated areas.

Base: Ganzhou
Ethnicities: Hainan (pop ~1,000,000)
Area of support: Southern Huangdi mountains, southern Huanghe valley
Available Manpower: 40,000
Relations with Gov: Good; the Hainan have traditionally been cooperative. Gov is wary for strengthening their position too much. Expect cooperation and material support in terms of small arms and non-lethal equipment and supplies.

Manchu and Taichi Battalions

Description:
The Manchu and Taichi are culturally very similar and share a similar, mutually-intelligible language. They have an active warrior spirit and are known to be tough and brave fighters, and the government has used their fearsome reputation to suppress their enemies and other insurgencies (at times alongside military troops). Lacking in numbers, this is made up by excellent training (relatively speaking) and heavy and up-to-date equipment. However, they will expect significant, active resistance when operating outside their area of support.

Base: Chusheng
Ethnicities: Manchi and Taichi (pop each ~500,000)
Area of support: Nanshan Mountains
Available Manpower: 20,000
Relations with Gov: Excellent, the two ethnic groups are small enough and are the darlings of the government and are at times used to suppress the Kosa and communists. Expect full cooperation, extensive material support (including heavy weapons such as armor and artillery) and training.

Sea Triads

From Night Clubs in Sylva to Used Car Dealerships in the Halu'a, one name defines crime in Modern Septentrion, The Sea Triads. Based in Chen and launching from Canton, these pirates aren't your ordinary fishmen-gone-rogue. They are one of the largest, most organized, and ruthless organizations to ever operate and have their fingers in pies such as Racketeering, Human Trafficking, Smuggling, Cybercrime, Fraud, Extortion, and the Sex Trade. Mortal enemies of the Brotherhood of the Helm and the OS Government, the Sea Triads are inclined to use every method possible to secure the success of their businesses.

Support Unclear. Discret Government/Military support in Chen possible. A multitude of government officials in Canton are on their payroll. The OS has launched a massive inter-agency effort to curb their operations. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Strategic Intelligence Services, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense assets and personnel are all involved in a worldwide campaign to drastically curtail the capabilities and operations of the Triads.

The Forbidden City
Dongjing - Capital of Great Chen
0700 Hours - April 18, 2016

Minister of Defense Lee Faozian paced up the stairs to the throne room, his forehead beady with sweat. He carelessly brushed past the guards, shoving one aside, and speed walked his way towards the Emperor. His footsteps echoed loudly in the empty room, usually colorful and alive with the Imperial Court, but dark and almost solemn in the morning dew. He sped in front of the throne, and immediately kowtowed at its base, clumsily dropping the scrolls he had in his arms. Slowly, he looked up.

"So early in the morning, I thought we were to meet at 4?", said Emperor Weichung indifferently, tapping away at his smartphone.

The Minister looked back downwards and opened his mouth. “Huangdi…just this morning, eighty more dead, hundreds hospitalized... the communists attacked Chaoqui again and those goddamn Cantonese are refusing to allow us to even retaliate!”

The Emperor stopped and looked at his minister. Lee jumped up and hastily bowed again. “Your Imperial Highness, I discussed with my officials and generals, and all of us urge you to take offensive action! How many more deaths will we allow to happen? How many more times shall we be humi-”

Emperor Weichung, the Zunwu Emperor, raised his hand, quieting the red-faced official. He slowly stroke his stubble-ridden chin, still too young for an adult's beard, and stared blankly out at the wall. He gave a sincere sigh, heaved himself up, and started to pace around the room, staring at the floor. His stare got sharper every step he took, and his face more tense.

“We need to plan both a military and diplomatic solution to this. It might be too risky to use military force, knowing that they are on good terms with Murovanka. But how many times has diplomacy failed? Can we even negotiate with these Westernized barbarians?” The Emperor stopped pacing and looked at Lee.

“Lee Xiansheng, mobilize the reserves of the Tugol, Kaifing, and Kaishu Military Districts, and have them train as much as the regulars do. I want those armies labeled as active, and put everyone else, the Navy, the Airforce, the Order, the 7th, the 43rd, everyone on active alert. Be ready to mobilize the population in case war does break out. I also want patrols 24/7 along the border, any man who crosses will be detained, or shot. We can't let another attack happen. Also, bring my cabinet and the whole Department of Defense to me, now. Quickly, do all this, I want a meeting before noon.”

The Minister raised both hands to the front of his face to bow again, but was interrupted by another voice.

“Actually...this may be a chance to reunite this...fractured nation…” cooed Fa Xiaolu, the Emperor’s attendant. He strode from his position to the right of the throne, walking towards both men. “If we manage to take the whole country within a few weeks, we can fully annex them before even Wanka could respond. Their army composed of nothing but ragtag teens, their navy a few patrol boats, and their air force obsolete jets...do we really have anything to fear? These Cantonese...brothers...need to remember that they are all Han, that we are all Han. They are not the Wankans they think they are...”

The Emperor started to stroke his beard again, thinking to himself. Minister Lee suddenly looked around, realizing his scrolls had rolled far away, and started to scurry after them, signaling the guards to help him. Emperor Weichung snickered and turned towards his advisor.

“Bring in my cousin, Duke Yichao. I want him to appear in front of the Sylvans and ask for any kind of support. I heard that they are in bad terms with both Wanka and Canton. If war does break out we can use anything, financial subsidiaries, military equipment, even an expeditionary forces if possible. We need all the allies we can get. Also, I need you to find an envoy to Canton...I still want a peaceful end to this...but war...war seems inevitable...”

"Shi de, your Highness, right away". The attendant bowed and left the room, kicking away another scroll in his path just as Lee was about to reach it.

Emperor Weichung walked back to his throne and threw himself onto its gold-embroidered silk cushion, letting out another sigh as he clenched onto the gold armrests. The Minister of Defense walked back to the throne. Before he could speak the Emperor looked up.

"I didn't even eat breakfast yet. What do you think about some Peking roasted duck?"\

PRESIDENT FAT, CHEN OFFICIALS TRADE BARBS IN ESCALATING WAR OF WORDS

Dispute over communists escalates as Canton rebuffs Chen envoy, sends troops to the border

Image
Cantonese soldiers on patrol near the border with China

XIANGGANG (香港)- Xianggang yesterday refused a Chen diplomatic mission sent to discuss the worsening situation on the two Chinese-speaking nation’s borders, with Cantonese President Chin Tu Fat telling Emporer Weichung to “come off his high horse first” as a condition for negotiations. It comes after a renewed ambush on a Chen border guard near the Cantonese border town of Jinan which claimed the lives of four Chinese soldiers, according to Chen news sources. A video, taken by a Chinese soldier involved in the ambush, showed how allegedly Cantonese soldiers and communist guerrillas fired in tandem at the Chen patrol. The video, which has gone viral, has led to an outcry in the Empire and demands for the Emperor to punish the Fat regime, which is widely seen as harboring the communists, if not supporting them outright. The Chen military has said that the ambush allowed “the Canton-sponsored terrorists to bring in weapons, ammunition and fighters” to reinforce existing communist cells in the western part of the nation.

The Chen military, in response to a series of deadly attacks which took the lives of over a hundred people, has mobilized its reserves and put military forces on the border on high alert, and have warned the population to prepare for war. China has a longstanding, century-old dispute over the sovereignty of Canton, historically a fractured alliance of Chinese states who rebelled against the Dynasty. The Holy Wankan Empire, which then sponsored the secessionists, took control over the region and officially established it as a protectorate, before formally ceding control with the establishment of the Canton Republic in the Treaty of Hessen. China sees the poor, fledgeling nation still as part of its territory, and have made controversial and provocative comments about its status as “part of the Empire”. This has angered the Wankan-supported Fat administration, which has announced the deployment of several brigades of the Canton Armed Forces to the Canton-Chen border. In addition, the Ministry of Defense has ordered that air patrols near Chen airspace would resume, a move likely to trigger harsh response by the Chen government. The two nations have proven to be pretty trigger-happy when forces are massed opposite the border, with the Chen Air Force having downed a Canton jet just last year amongst exchanges of small arms fire along the border.

The situation has continued to escalate despite calls by the international community for calm and restraint. Wankan Foreign Minister Heinrich von Preisen has urged both sides to “sit down and solve the problem at the negotiating table, as equals in the name of peace”. However, with a Chen Duke on a widely publicised visit to Sylva presumed by many as a call for support, Wanka has sped up the delivery of weapons as part of a multibillion-dollar arms deal between it and its Canton ally. This includes lethal strategic medium-range FLAK-9 and FLAK-15 surface to air missile systems which are highly valued by the Canton military, especially with the systems being proven successfully on the Saxon battlefields. With Wankan chancellor Heinrich Sonneborn yesterday putting to rest any speculation of a Wankan military intervention on behalf of Canton in case of a Chinese invasion, the Fat administration has been scrambling to find solutions to compensate for the Canton Armed Forces’ military inferiority toward the Chen military.

Wuding City Square
Wuding | Canton Republic
1400 Hours | April 24th, 2016

“屋顶不欢迎你!”(“Wuding does not welcome you”) the protesters chanted as troops of the CAF’s 8th Mountain Brigade marched into the city. Amongst the protesters were not only local Hainanese, but also Kosan groups who loudly demanded the withdrawal of government troops. The situation here was surprising; Hainanese were usually on the government’s side and were more often than not opposed to Kosans, but today both were united against the government. The administration in Wuding was run largely by Hainan and Han Chinese, and they had deployed several hundred riot police to ensure smooth passageway of the military forces through the city.

What had started as a relatively peaceful protest soon turned ugly. The police had not managed to prevent the building of roadblocks by the protesters and the Brigadier General commanding the 8th ordered the streets to be cleared. The riot police moved in, destroying the roadblocks and forcefully dispersing protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets and batons. Youths who defiantly stood in their way were beaten to the ground and detained. One man pulled a gun out, yelling at the police to back off; he was promptly gunned down. Amidst the violence various members of Hainanese and Kosan militia groups stood by, watching. With the military and police out in force, along with helicopters circling overhead, starting a gunfight here was a bad idea. But amongst them, several swore to avenge their unarmed, helpless brothers and sisters who were suffering under the yoke of the Yue government.

Three more deaths occurred that day, with many more wounded. Notably, a Han officer shooting to death in cold blood a fleeing Kosan woman in the back. Race relations had just hit an all-time low with the arrival of the 8th Mountain Brigade not only between ethnic groups but within them as well. The Kosans, meanwhile, were furious and while the upper echelons maintained that they would continue to keep the military under watch and lay low for now, some decided to take things into their own hands.

That night, a truck rolled into the border village of Zhaohuo, a Han village east of Wuding of roughly 1,000 people with close ties to their Chen counterparts across the border. With Wuding under martial law, this group had decided to take revenge on an unguarded little Han settlement. These Kosans were fuming at what they saw as Han collaborators who worked with the oppressive Yue-dominated government. Tonight, they would pay.

Shouts and screams for help erupted from the tiny village as one by one, families were dragged out of their sleep and forced at gunpoint out into the open. Technology had not properly reached these isolated communities, just as it hadn’t reached many other far-flung regions of Canton, and so they had no telephones to connect to the regional police. So far, the Han were more or less left alone by rival militias, and so they hadn’t developed their own home defense forces. From less than a kilometer away across the border, a Chen patrol watched anxiously as the events unfolded. Men were separated from women, one resisting old man was shot on the spot. The men were then lined up, kneeling, in the open, with the Kosans seemingly ready to execute them in full view of their families.

The Chen soldiers on patrol saw no help incoming from police or the army and were facing a dilemma. One of them swore.

“We can’t just let them get slaughtered. They’re Han, damnit, just like us! Screw our rules and regulations, perhaps the Cantons will even thank us for helping to stop a massacre. That isn’t Canton land when they cannot even protect their own. Come on!”

One soldier protested, but the others all agreed. They stepped across the border and ran toward the village.

“匪徒已经开始杀死他们!” (“The bandits are already starting to execute them!”) the leader shouted. “Shoot when you can!”

The Kosan gunmen turned and registered surprise at the sight of the soldiers- they suspected soldiers from the military, having not realized how close they were to the border. The border used to be pretty porous, and didn’t mean much to them. The Canton Armed Forces weren’t the best soldiers in the world, and in such small skirmishes it was nearly always the battle-hardened militiamen who came out on top. They did expect to win this engagement and be able to pull back unscathed, but they were wrong. The Chen squad, spread out in a tactically advanced position with plenty of soft cover, laid down disciplined, withering fire on the Kosans who didn’t stand a chance. The Chen squad was happy to let the “bandits” flee having prevented further deaths, but before the shooting stopped, a military patrol of the 8th Mountain made an appearance. Alerted to the shooting and just happening to pass by at this time, all they saw was uniformed Chen soldiers firing at fleeing Cantonese civilians. Without hesitating or thinking twice, the patrol engaged, radioing the 8th Headquarters of the Chen incursion. The Chen squad fired back as it withdrew, making numerous attempts to communicate with the Cantonese patrol while at the same time calling their headquarters for assistance.

Motorized Canton light infantry squads arrived first. The patrol was still firing at the Chen troops, who had retreated across the border. Apparently, the Cantonese company commander mistook their orders of pushing the Chennese back to the border with neutralizing the threat. And so the Canton troops surged into Chen territory, determined to punish and kill the violators of Canton sovereignty. Meanwhile, President Fat was awoken and informed of what was reported as “Chen reconnaissance troops leading an invasion.” An emergency cabinet meeting, scheduled for 2 o’clock in the morning of April 25th, was planned. The order was given to immediately mobilize all reserves for active duty and for the contingency defense plan of sending military brigades eastward to go ahead. Navy and Air Force were also alerted, and their Manchu and Taichi allies were notified.

At the village of Zhaohuo, eight dead Han bodies, 5 dead Kosans and three wounded Kosans were found. The Kosans were heavily armed, and the civilians had been executed from short distance by Kosan weapons, it was quickly established. Nevertheless, the first official statement to the Zhaohuo incident was that Chen troops had infiltrated Canton and had begun a senseless massacre of Canton civilians. At the same time, bullets continued to fly on the border.

The Zhaohuo Massacre: Cantonese Seperatists Kill Hundreds

Hundreds of Chen civilians DEAD and MAIMED, 9 soldiers KILLED in skirmish

An aerial photograph of the aftermath taken by a military drone this morning

DONGJING - The village of Zhaohuo was sacked by Cantonese insurgents last night, hoping to provoke further crisis in the Rogue Provinces. Civilians were tortured and humiliated before being executed, and dozens are believed to have been incapacitated.

A patrol of the 81st Cavalry Division spotted insurgents, dressed as Kosan fighters, dragging civilians out of their homes and beating them, and was ordered to moved in and drive off the hostiles. A firefight soon took place, with the insurgents using women and children as living shields.

"We saw bodies, some cut up so badly that you couldn't even recognize them [as] people anymore." recalls Private Lee Chew-kok, who was injured during the engagement. "They were using those still alive as shields, and continued to shoot at the civies while taunting us."

After a brief shootout the gunmen retreated, only to reveal a much larger cognate of Cantonese insurgents hiding in the surrounding forests, who counterattacked and forced the patrol to withdrawal. The terrorists pursued the outnumbered troops for another few kilometers, inflicting casualties on our men.

"When they stopped, only Sergeant Zhu, Private Liao and I were still on our feet ." said Lee.

When aerial drones were sent back to the village at dawn, it was revealed that hundreds of bodies were being butchered and buried in a mass grave. Survivors herded up and led to trucks for unknown reasons.

The Zunwu Emperor gave a speech at the Palace of Administration today at 7 A.M., informing the world of the terrible tragedy. He has declared that martial law will be enforced upon the provinces, and that hostile militias of the region will be wiped out for good.

"Today is the day we bring back order to these provinces, whether through peace or not!" said the Emperor. "No longer will China be lawless, no longer will the crimes of these provinces be tolerated, no longer will we allow our people to live underneath a blanket of fear! We will take action, and these terrorists will pay the full price, plus tax!"

An official was sent to Xianggang, which has been made the de facto HQ of these terrorists, earlier this week to demand a peaceful end to this anarchy, but has instead been turned away with a gun to his head. Since this morning, Navy ships have been blockading the hostile-controlled coastline, and our armies are advancing westward into uncontrolled territory. Air strikes are also being carried out in the region as well. It is expected that the territories will be retaken within a month of fighting.

The Rogue Provinces, a name given to the rebellious territories of our land, consists of the provinces of Dahai, Xishui, Canton, and Huanghe. These provinces have been occupied by the "Republic of Canton", a illegally proclaimed "sovereign" state, for the past century. Backed by Wanka since the Revolution of 1881, the group has been left unchallenged since their initial occupation of Chen soil, and are even recognized supported by some barbarians throughout the east of Septentrion. This terrorist group also operates out of many smaller groups, such as the infamous Red Militia, and seeks to destroy our traditional way of life.

The "Republic" has not only spread their communistic ideals all over the Rogue Provinces, but has also been promoting a "Yue identity", attempting to separate Yue speakers from our common Han heritage. This has led to the classification of non-Yue speakers as subhuman, resulting in the mistreatment of many of their own Han brothers. Last night's massacre was one of many examples of this uncivilized behavior.

"There are many, many more instances of crimes committed by these insurgents against humanity in general." said Professor Yu Fatfuk, a professor of the Human Rights Institution of Tianlan University. "There are many well documented reports of..." Continued on A3

Henan Airbase
Outside Henan | Canton Republic
0800 Hours | April 25th, 2016 | Day 1

Four patrolling Wankan-made G-21s had already been downed before the Canton Armed Forces Air Force was alerted to the intruders. It was a tad bit too late by then, as hundreds of Imperial aircraft raced in a superbly organized fashion into Canton airspace. The Chennese aircraft negated the lack of forward air controllers simply with overwhelming firepower. Chennese AWACs controlled the skies, and every radar on Canton ground was quickly spotted and had a dozen Chennese fighterbombers armed with anti-radar missiles routed to it. Thus blinded, the ground-based SAM network was rendered useless. Missiles began raining down on Henan Airbase while its pilots attempted to climb into their G-23s. Barely any made it into the air. Of the sixty operational combat aircraft that the CAFAF started with, two thirds were destroyed on the ground. H-8 strategic bombers left airfields unusable, preventing any more aircraft from taking off. Within hours, the CAFAF ceased to exist as an effective fighting force.

At the same time, J-15 fighter-bombers taking off from Chennese aircraft carriers moving into their blockading positions obliterated the Canton Armed Forces Navy in their harbours. Surface-launched cruise missiles soon joined the party, sending the harbours alight. The Wankan-made Albatross-class missile boats, the most powerful ship in the navy’s arsenal, lacked anti-aircraft capabilities and so did the corvettes and patrol boats which formed its backbone. The last two Wankan transport ships carrying mobile SAM systems managed to slip through the blockade; two more were intercepted by patrolling J-15s and were ordered to turn back or face immediate destruction. By noon on the first day, the Republic had lost its navy and air force, and only four Chen aircraft were recorded as shot down. Most likely by friendly fire.

The air campaign wasn’t going to stop there. Communications centers, military storage warehouses, railroad centers and military formations caught in the open were devastated as Fat broadcasted his emergency message to the nation. Numerous bombs struck civilian areas too, including hospitals, while it remained unclear whether this was done intentionally or not. Regardless, Canton was burning, and that was all the nation’s citizens could see.

Dragon House
Xianggang | Canton Republic
1400 Hours | April 25th, 2016 | Day 1

”… a state of war exists between Canton and China. I plead to the free world to come together and stand with the Republic against this unprovoked, imperialist Chinese aggression…”

”Nei zhan ho yi gong wo…” (“You can really speak”) said Fa Kin Nee, President Chin Tu Fat’s personal, ever-limping bodyguard (thanks Aemen). He’d been shot in the knee three years ago while saving Fat from an assassination attempt, and while outsiders often scrutinised Nee’s ability to perform his duty with a limp, Fat stuck with him.

”Mo yong. Nei hou, nei hou.” (“It’s no use. Hello, hello.”) Fat said as everyone was seated. This time, the meeting included numerous top military officers, including the Chief of Staff, the head of the Air Force and Navy, in addition to General Ruprecht, the Wankan military attaché and a Manchu envoy. “How does the situation look like?”

Defense Minister Ho Lee Fuk, looking clearly dejected, projected a map of Canton as another bomb struck the Xianggang harbour, shaking the walls of the underground bunker.

“The Navy and Air Force have been wiped out, that is out of question. The Chen Air Force is now actively, single-handedly destroying our ability to fight back. There has been no recorded movement on the ground yet, but we expect an invasion to occur soon. The 75th Airborne Brigade, our quick reaction force, is currently reinforcing the central front while all available mountain and armored brigades have been sent through the mountains. Their movement will be slow, however, as they cannot appear as whole formations in the open or they will be targeted and destroyed. They have to move inconspicuously in small groups with cover, or disguise themselves as civilians.

“From what we have from intelligence, the Chen military will advance on three main axes of attack: north, central and south. Our strategy will be the following. North and south are valueless when compared to the central region, and their mountainous terrain and few roads and passes will be easy to defend. In the central region, our initial main defense lines will run along the Huanghe river. A ceasefire agreement has been made with the Kosan armed groups, they will not fight alongside us, but they won’t fight against us. Whether they will resist against the Chen military, we will see but it is unlikely that they will join up with them. If the Huanghe line, which we have called the Fat Line, is overrun, troops will withdraw to the Handi river and continue to wear down Chen military forces.”

“And the negotiations with the communists and Hainanese?” asked General Ruprecht. “I understand the Manchu and Taichi clans have agreed to take over defense of their sector and hold until regular forces arrive. Help from the other groups will be necessary.”

“The Hainan Army will be fighting alongside the 8th Mountain Brigade in the southern Huanghe valley and Huangdi mountains, that has been confirmed. The communists are not willing to negotiate, although we have extended a hand. They are fighting the Emperor for longer than I have been President. We can leave the northern regions to them and the Kosans, and just ensure that Chen forces don’t break through.”

He smiled. “Let them grind each other down, and we will clean up what’s left.”

Sun Soldiers Joint Command HQ
Chusheng | Canton Republic
1400 Hours | April 25th, 2016 | Day 1

The Manchu and Taichi forces, collectively known as the Soldiers of the Sun (due to their worship of the Sun) were an interesting mix of tradition and modernity. A tenth of their combined populations lived in Chusheng, their command center, while the rest lived in sporadic but well-connected towns and village settlements across the southern mountains. They had inhabited the region since prehistory, and lived in semi-democratic communities with a strong warrior culture. Nobody knew the towering, often lethal mountains of the south as intimately as they did and as such had been throughout history more than capable of defending their homes, regardless of the enemies’ numerical and technical superiority, while at the same time refraining from expanding into foreign areas and resisting integration. This colorful history would be put to test in the coming weeks, however. The idyllic warrior carrying nothing but a spear, sword or crossbow who was able to scale mountains without any special equipment and who was able to survive for months on what the mountains offered was replaced today with specially designed Wankan mountain warfare backpacks, assault rifles, heavy mortars and even their own companies of armored vehicles. Specially subsidized and partly offered by the Canton government.

Oriental forces had a fearsome reputation, and were known to be well-disciplined and highly skilled. Which was why the Canton government, in exchange for non-interference and guarantee of semi-autonomy often requested them to put them local unrest and rebellions. Often appearing alongside military forces to maintain civil law and order, they soon came to be both hated and respected by other ethnic and religious groups across Canton. Their troops practiced absolute obedience to their superiors and did not hesitate to execute civilians when ordered to.

Chief Snake, the Manchu clan supreme leader, was currently the head of the Sun regiments with Chief Eagle, the Taichi leader, as vice-commander. The leadership position was always swapped every year, after local elections took place to elect community chiefs (one of whom would then be elected the overall tribal leader). Both of them pored over an extremely detailed map unreadable to the Canton Armed Forces envoy. It marked hundreds of hideouts and caves in use, weapons and ammunitions caches, strategic points and suitable ambush points. Their forces currently consisted of five regiments, two Manchu and Taichi, and one mixed reserves regiment totalling some 6,000 troops. Thanks to the Wankans they were also equipped with their own heavy weapons including artillery and MANPADs. These were best and most elite troops that would resist the Chen invasion. Unfortunately, it would be difficult to deploy them into any other areas but their home regions. Their effectiveness in other areas would also be affected too, anyways.

“The enemy is strong, maybe several hundred thousand strong, but our ancestors have faced such odds before.” muttered Chief Snake. “They have deployed many armor forces, which will not do well in this terrain. The longer their supply lines get, the more difficult it will be to feed their vehicles and soldiers. I have studied the our Wankan brothers’ Sellenland campaign, we will do the same.”

“Yes.” Agreed Chief Eagle, his thick woollen coat, a must-have in these cold heights, swept the floor as he walked around in the bunker in thoughtful circles. “We will let them proceed, and not reveal our advantageous fighting positions initially. There is little point in engaging them head-on-“ he made a chopping move with his hand. “Instead, we cut their necks. Weaken them by depriving them off their supplies, and destroy their formations one by one.”

“Precisely.” commented Chief Snake, and both, seemingly satisfied, sat down to smoke marijuana, their ancient drug which was cultivated for centuries. Not once did they show any sign of nervousness, and barely did they mention their units. They seemed to trust their field commanders in doing what they were supposed to do, said the Canton envoy to himself. If only their own commanders were just as confident and united.

The Opera House of Eternal Longevity
Dongjing - Capital of Great Chen
1430 Hours - April 25, 2016

The Zunwu Emperor was trying his hardest not to fall asleep, knowing that he was on national TV on all major stations. Before him was a cognate of opera singers, performing the most renowned Peking Opera in the history of Chinese theater, A Tale of Two Lovers Under the Moonlight. The Emperor yawned loudly and reached into his pocket, while half of his friends and officials next to him facepalmed. The actors noticed this and started to sing even louder, hoping that their voices would attract the Emperor’s attention. Instead, the young Emperor cringed at the noise, and brought out his phone.

“1 Unread Message” spelled the characters on the phone screen, followed by the name “The Homie Hsing Yuanfen” .

The Emperor felt a sudden blow to his chest, and felt a surge of anxiety hit him. “Shit, he must of saw me do something stupid on TV!” he thought. He unlocked his phone with a swift movement of the thumb and opened the message.

“LOL rekt them so hard bro. n00bs supa dead now. will keep pounding them until u say so” read the text message. Zunwu gave a huge sigh of relief, and turned to the Minister of Defense, Lee Faozian.

“Air Admiral Hsing has just confirmed that the air campaign was a success” smiled the Emperor, his voice barely audible over the commotion on stage.

“Yes, I believe I told you this at noon already, your Highness”, responded the quietly Minister, apparently very interested in the play. His eyes were tearful, sadden by the death of some protagonist.

The Emperor looked back at his phone. “Received 11:26 AM”.

Suddenly everybody got up, clapping and cheering. The opera had ended, and the sweating singers on stage were bowing, leaving stage one by one. The Emperor got up as well, clapping and smiling at the cameras.

After a he saw the cameras turn back towards the stage and audience, he tapped the shoulder of his Minister. “Are the field armies moving forwards already?”

Lee wiped a tear from his eye and looked at the Emperor. “No, they are preparing to attack at nightfall. However, the Ministry has concerns about the Southern route of attack. Chusheng is home to those barbaric Manchus and Taichis, both very formidable warrior societies. You remember what they did to us in 1824, right? Destroyed an army of 200,000 with only 60,000 men. A technologically superior Chen army, by the way. We fear they would be strong enough to stop our armies in a stalemate, or even do the same...”

The emperor laughed. “Nonsense! Which army guards the Imperial Palaces? Which army is the best equipped and best trained? That’s right, the Order. And who is spearheading that attack? The Order! Don’t worry, Lee Xiansheng. I’m sure my beloved cousin Field General Falin knows what she is doing. She’s smart, cunning, the type of person who can and will do anything to succeed . I know she can find multiple solutions to any problem.”

The Emperor turned back to the stage, and motioned for his court to leave the opera house. “You worry too much, Marquess. Way too much. The North and South should actually be the easy routes of attack, considering how our armies are moving on roads and through valleys. It’s the middle that will be a tough nut to crack. There's only a narrow pass through those mountains, and it's very easy to defend. The highway that passes through the range is most likely sabotaged with explosives. The 17th Airborne is ready to be deployed, right? I want them in the fight by nightfall, we need them to attack those mountains from behind. The 3rd Mountain will advance before the main army, and meet up with the paratroopers between. That way we can ensure a safe passage of the other components of Field Army Middle."

The Emperor turned towards his Deputy Supervisor, Fang Zhaozhuo. "Any word from Yichao yet? Until he comes back, I want you to go ahead and see how the Kosans would feel about joining us. Tell them to imagine this: Kosa Autonomous Region, carved right out of Xishui Province. Government built infrastructure, as fine as the ones here in Dongjing! A weighted Kosa representation over other ethnicity living within the boundaries, actual stimulation of the economy, access to so many goods and resources without all the tariffs. I know they're still salty as hell over the whole Zhaohuo incident, but just remind them: The Yue are also Han. The Kosans should be mad at the Cantonese for fielding undisciplined officers, not at us!"

Ng Family Rice Fields
Eastern Huanghe Valley, Canton
1900 Hours - April 25, 2016

Ng Yat-Ngok knelt back down, placing another rice plant down into the muddy soil. He and most of the members of the five-generation Ng family had been transplanting the rice seedlings farther away from each other before the crack of dawn, preparing for the next harvest. Ng wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, and groaned from the pain on his back, which was already starting to ache.

“One day, I'll be able to sit inside the house and just watch all the rest do all this work. One day...”, he thought to himself, thinking about his parents and his grandparents enjoying tea inside courtyard of the Ng residence.

Heaving his fifty-six year old body back up, he waddled his way through the water, reaching for another flimsy plant from his makeshift basket. Just as he was about to bend back down, he suddenly stopped, realizing that the water all around him started to vibrate lightly, as if an army of heavy Tugolian horse archers was approaching. He became more alert, and noticed there had been a noise in the background, a humming noise, growing louder and louder ever so slightly. Now it seemed that it was getting louder exponentially.

“媽媽,媽媽, 你看!飛機!” (“Mommy, mommy, look! Airplanes!”) laughed Ng’s grandson, who was in the hoping around in arms of his mother. He pointed at the sky and kept laughing, making adorable airplane noises. Ng, who couldn’t hear these words over the sound, saw everybody in front of him turning and staring in awe, some clasping their hands over their mouths. Ng's sister-in-law Kin-Wo dropped her basket and fainted into the arms of Ng's brother.

Before Ng could turn to see what his family was staring at, a fat transport plane flew overhead, less than a hundred meters from the ground. The earth shook from the passing aircraft, startling the water oxen nearby. As the plane slowly gained altitude, more and more aircraft zoomed overhead, escorted by sleek fighter jets. Ng stared at the passing aircraft, wondering what the military could be doing in such a remote part of the valley. He had heard news about some conflict with Chen, but that was all he had heard about.

By the time he saw the bright yellow crosses painted on the sides of the passing aircraft, he also spotted tiny parachutes start to appear and trail behind the war machines, thousands of paratroopers making their jump. Light tanks and APCs fell out of the planes like rocks, only for half a dozen parachutes to sprout out like blossoming flowers. Boxes and crates were dropped as well, along with artillery guns and jeeps.

“Quick, everybody into the house!” Ng shouted, staring at the descending army. Everyone started to rush towards the small siheyuan in the distance, leaving their tools and baskets of rice plants behind. All around him, paratroopers were landing and detaching their chutes, crates of supplies were being opened by soldiers, and crewmen were climbing from their vehicles to remove the supports. A squad of soldiers was making their way towards the Ng family, shouting in a language that he couldn’t even understand. He immediately knew that this was going to be a very bad season for rice.

OFFICE OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE
DEPARTMENT OF THE ORIENT
SECURITY REPORT 23/10/XXXX (21:53:36)
ENCRYPTION : CHASSE-J

COMPILED BY : LT. H. R. FAWKES, ONI

The First Minister, Acropolis, ONI Central, Parliament and the Royal Family should be advised that Chen Dynasty forces are officially invading the Canton Republic as of 1800 (EIGHTEEN HUNDRED) hours. Unconfirmed reports of naval action in the Canton Sea, will be confirmed at 22:00 (TWENTY-TWO HUNDRED) hours by drone flyby. Assume correct. ANGELS satellite confirms the movement of Chen forces along three general prongs, north, central, south, with auxilary air assets being deployed in the countryside as reconnaissance forces. Canton response has been futile, Canton Air Force estimated at 35% combat capacity after opening strikes. Chen forces have met mixed success in opening moves.

ANALYSIS :

The Chen Army is extremely large and disciplined on paper. However, with over 750,000 soldiers in theater with less than a week to prepare, their logistical situation is critical, and that Canton guerrillas will exploit this to its fullest. ONI expects that while Chen forces will be successful in open combat, and fully expect the Dynasty to completely overrun the Canton Republic within fifteen days, it is unlikely that they will be able to consolidate and hold their gains. The presence of veteran Kosa fighters in the north and Sun Soldiers in the south, who are extremely skilled at mountain warfare and well-armed, trained, and supplied, it is extremely unlikely that Chen forces will be able to root out the resistance movements. Attempts to pacify the country may lead to increased tensions with the general population, presenting a major problem if the Dynasty expects to annex Canton.

PREDICTION :

The Chen Army will overrun the Canton Republic within a matter of days, but guerrilla activity will prevent them from pacifying the country for years to come. The war itself will most likely be fought as an insurgency rather than a conventional conflict as we saw in Saxony and the Sellenland, respectively.

ADVICE : (STATUS – ACCEPTED)

Sylva should NOT become directly involved in the Canton-Chen conflict, nor should it directly support either side. However, the Chen Dynasty could be made into an important regional ally and assist in containing Wankan influence on satellite states. ONI does recommend that the Foreign and State Ministries form close ties with the Chen government and concede to inevitable Chen requests of aid that Duke Yichao has made. A public declaration of friendship may also be in order along with the extension of financial support and the sale of military hardware; However, the deployment of any COSAF forces to the region is currently unnecessary and impractical, unless supported by the intervention of other Septentrion League nations, particularly the Organized States. If OS forces take majority responsibility, it may be in our best interest to deploy a token force should the need arise. However, unless League allies dictate so, intervention should be avoided.

West Bank
Huanghe Valley | Canton
2000 Hours | April 25th, 2016, Day 1

”Meng bak… meng bak… dak, dak, o dei yi ga lei gan.” (“Understood… okay, we’re coming.”)

The commander of the 75th Airborne, Brigadier-General Bart Schmidt, looked alarmed as he put down the phone. The 75th was one of the three elite quick-reaction brigades of the Canton Armed Forces, with notably many ethnic Wankers amongst their ranks.

“Was ist?” his XO asked. Schmidt pointed out of the window of the truck. In the darkening sky, hundreds of parachutes were gliding down above Canton soil. The General opened a map for his officers to see.

“The Chinese have started with an airborne invasion and already have troops on the ground behind our lines. Known landing zones are here, here and here.” he marked the locations on the map. “Prepare your troops, we’re getting out in ten minutes. I’ll see what else Xianggang knows.”

The air assault was completely unexpected. At least they had many troops in the area, and Central Command had high hopes that the Chen paratroopers would be crushed swiftly. The 8th and 22nd Mountain Brigades were already in the area, along with the Hainan Army’s Huanghe and Xianghe Brigades. In the northern areas, Kosan militiamen were also present and had helped pinpoint the enemy paratroopers’ landing zones. Communication problems brought by the Chen Air Force resulted in the units acting late, but they did move in forcefully. The first firefights erupted in the Canton rice fields as the evening dawned.

Schmidt’s brigade marched rapidly to the battle area some 30 kilometers from Wuding and within the Huangdi mountains. The troops sent there, the 4th Xianghe Brigade of the Hainan Army, was being pinned down by ever increasing numbers of Chen paratroopers who were well dug-in amongst the rocky landscape. From afar Schmidt could see why they were failing. Used to combat with mobile, lightly-armed Kosans, these relatively untrained part-time militiamen were now being shocked and beaten down by Chen troops wearing body armor and carrying high-tech weaponry. According to reports from the local commander the enemy had even managed to land tanks.

The battalions of the 75th Airborne took its time to maneuver to the Chen troops’ flank while its heavy mortars began pounding their landing zone. From a hill nearby Schmidt could see the continuous rain of Chen paratroopers landing in the clearing before moving out quickly to defensive positions in a well-rehearsed manner to make way for the next group. Their well-trained troops kept calm in the face of the bullets which began chasing them even as they floated to the ground, riddling their parachutes with holes. Despite the significant losses associated with such risky operations, the Chen officers methodically organized the defense, with platoons throwing back and gaining ground from the demoralized Hainanese.

Schick’ sie ‘rein.” (“Send them in”) Schmidt ordered. To his left, the men of his 75th Airborne attacked, instantly opening a new front and relieving the pressured 4th Brigade. The advance of the 75th was rapid and pushed the Chen contingent further and further back, soon coming within shooting distance of the landing zone which Schmidt and Central Command were desperate to close. Grenade launchers sent their explosive ordnance into the field, putting Chen troops out of action before they had set foot on Canton soil. Smoke grenades were also launched to hamper further landings. But that was as far as the 75th could get get. Schmidt was angrily yelling into the radio for the Hainanese to move, but the commander of the Xianghe Brigade could only moan about how his troops were too scared to advance, even with barely anyone shooting back at them.

A loud whomping noise was heard overhead. First came a hail of bomblets dropped from some Chen fighter-bomber before the massive gunships made their appearance. From above, high explosive rockets smashed into the positions, followed by hails of minigun fire which razed entire platoons to the ground. The troops of the 75th dove for cover from the new threat while scrambling for their anti-air missiles. The Wankan-made MANPADs were extremely reliable, but not exactly state-of-the-art and not difficult to fool. A bulky attack chopper doing a risky low-level gun run was brought down, but several more missiles which streaked into the sky all missed or were fooled by countermeasures. Nevertheless, it still convinced the choppers, having expended their heavy ammunition, to leave.

Schmidt saw their chance. ”VORWÄRTS! ZUM ANG-“ from his side, his aide tackled him and threw him to the ground just as a Chen fighter-bomber, flying perilously low, strafed their camoflaged position before shooting up and out of sight. The General was lucky to have such a loyal officer by his side; his aide had thrown himself on top of him and had received a bullet to the stomach, which would’ve otherwise hit Schmidt. The Brigadier-General quickly organized his wounded guardian’s evacuation as he turned back to the battle, which was not going well. More airdropped armored personnel carriers, light tanks, mortars and ammunition had been rushed to the beleaguered Chen paratroopers, and with the new supplies, they were launching an armored assault onto the 4th Xianghe Brigade. The Hainanese scattered and practically withdrew, some simply deserting, allowing the reinforced Chen troops to fully focus on the 75th Airborne.

Full-scale fighting raged across the West Bank of the Huanghe river as an entire divisions’ worth of paratroopers including equipment were more or less successfully brought smack in the center of the Canton defensive positions, now single-handedly fighting five regular CAF brigades and three regiment-sized militia units. In this central sector, most troops were drawn into the fighting with the Chen paratroopers, leaving the defenses on the Huanghe river effectively unmanned. The Chen army advancing on the ground from the border would face practically no resistance if they tried to cross the defensible river.

In the north, the Chinese Field Army North initially faced determined resistance by combined Kosa-communist forces as it advanced along the Kanji river toward the city of Peiling, but after suffering heavy losses- and no support from the Canton Armed Forces- tended to avoid direct, pitched contact, instead settling for a delaying, fighting retreat along with numerous ambushes in the mountainous terrain.

Near Canton-Chen border
Nanhe River | Southern Canton
2200 Hours | April 25th, 2016, Day 1

The Manchu company commander, watched the procession through his night-vision goggles from a superbly hidden position on top of a mountain providing him excellent overview of the Nanhe river valley below. He had been waiting for hours now, watching patiently as the elite Order of the Chen Dynasty spearhead the assault into southern Canton, only to find nothing, really, that stood in their way. As they swept through the mountain passes, checking roughly for any enemies, they did bump into the occasional Manchu or Taichi patrol and on and off gunfights did happen, but they seemed to be isolated incidents of individual militiamen protecting their villages. Captured settlements had its citizens passively oppose the occupation, making it all too clear that the Chinese were not welcome. As the tanks, artillery and gunships actively looked for targets to engage, the thousands of Sun troopers continued to keep a low profile, allowing their enemies to move in unopposed… for now.

Because they knew that the further they went into the mountains, the harder it would be to supply them. Chusheng, their capital and a vital logistics and command node, was to remain in their hands, that much was clear. 150 kilometers of difficult terrain and natural obstacles lay between Chusheng and the Chen border, giving the Oriental forces much time and space to carry out their plan. The regular 4th and 26th Mountain Brigades were already assembling in the vicinity of Chusheng; Central Command had also sent the experienced 1st Armored Brigade to provide them with much-needed firepower as Canton looked to deliver its first heavy blow against the seemingly unstoppable Chen military.

Their forces did not have an unlimited supply of RPGs which were effective against the tough Chen steel, nor had enough SAMs to bring down their armada of deadly flying tanks. However, they could turn the moving steel beasts on the ground into nothing more than semi-permanent fortifications if their supply of fuel could be cut off, which was precisely what their goal was. The Manchu command chain was very decentralized, even when compared to the Taichis, which had its own pros and cons, of course. This allowed their commanders to have a great degree of freedom, allowing them to strike when they thought it was best.

Here, he was just waiting for the right type of enemies to pass into his crosshairs. As the clock approached midnight, the golden opportunity finally came; he had already been informed that further down the valley, two companies from his unit- the regimental-sized Dragon’s Claw- had executed a seemingly relatively successful hit. The foot soldiers marching in step behind the slow-moving supply trucks didn’t seem to be any more alert than before, however. All the better for him. The Manchu commander had all his pieces in place, and radioed silently: “Execute.”

A bridge in front of the column suddenly fell into the river, brought down by carefully placed and hidden explosive charges. Behind the column, two RPGs crashed into the bridge, destroying that one too. The soft-skinned supply column and exposed foot soldiers were now stranded and sandwiched between some hundred angry locals. From above, on elevated positions, machine-guns from both sides opened fire, tearing through trucks and soldiers alike. More heavily armored vehicles were targeted by the few RPG-gunners. Numerous ammunition and fuel-carrying trucks ignited and exploded, killing anyone unfortunate enough to be close by. As soon as it started, the machine-gun fire suddenly stopped, only to be replaced by a swarm of screaming fighters who had sneaked up to the column under the cover of their heavy weapons. Troops and armored vehicles, unable to directly help because of the collapsed bridges, dared not to fight in the crazy confusion that developed. Yelling angry war cries to demoralize their opponents, the Manchus barged right into anyone standing, mercilessly cutting down and destroying anyone in their path. Just as quickly as they had come, they disappeared; smoke grenades were launched to mask their escape as a look-out had warned of incoming choppers and air support. The mountains on both sides were soon after bombarded by the Chen Air Force, but by then, the Manchus had disappeared.

"HEY PROZAC, THIS GUY'S BREAKING IN ON OUR SIX!" yelled Naval Flight Officer, Lt. Adam "Switch" McManas as the "bogey" pulled in on their direct rear. He gritted his teeth as Lt. Jacob "Prozac" Arnolds pulled the airplane into a sharp 7.8 G bank to their port side in a desperate attempt to get the bogey off their tail. That's when they saw the second one. Their vapor trails had clearly signaled someone. The Black-painted F/A-28A of VFC-99 swooshed by their own two-seater F/A-24 Bobcat at supersonic speeds in a simulated gun run. VFC-99 were the best of the best. Hot stuff from the 5 Carrier Air Wings that equipped the OSN's Sidius Fleet carriers. Their job was simple. Provide realistic and challenging training to Naval Tactical Aviation in the Pacific. The F/A-28 was a perfect fit for them as well. The medium-sized fighter allowed for VFC-99 to simulate backbones of Chen Military aviation, the J-11 and J-15 along with the J-31.

"GODDAMMIT! THIS FUCKER'S ALL OVER US!" yelled Prozac as he desperately attempted another port hard bank.

"THE FIRST ONE'S COMING BACK AROUND!" Switch said as he turned around and checked their six.

"I got him, I got him!" Prozac said. "HOLD ON!"

Prozac pulled back on the stick and pushed the Bobcat's nose upwards to 90 Degrees. The Bobcat rapidly bleed airspeed, causing the Tigershark to rapidly overtake and overshot the Bobcat. Prozac immediately pushed the nose back down, grunting through the negative -3 Gs. He immediately pulled in behind the now poorly-positioned Tigershark and used his helmet-mounted display to lock on with a simulated AIM-9X.

"FOX ONE! SPLASH ONE! REAPER 1-1 IS DOWN." Switch announced over the radio as the black F/A-28A rocked his wings back and forth in salute and broke away out of the engagement area. Then, returned the other one. The second black F/A-28A pushed himself to the very edge of his capability on this new attack. He made another high angle dive, before attempting to pull in on the again defensive Bobcat. Only this time, he made a critical mistake, by putting himself in view of Prozac's head. Thus, making him targetable with another AIM-9X. Prozac turned his head to face the "hostile" aircraft and made lock-on.

"FOX ONE! FOX ONE! SPLASH ONE MORE BOGEY." screamed Switch as the second F/A-28 rocked his wings back and forth and once again broke away to rejoin his wingman.

"MV Savanna, this is OSS Caine responding to your hail on Channel 9. MV Savanna, please acknowledge, over." said Lieutenant Franklin as the OSS Caine closed on the large container ship gone dark. The Savanna had been missing for almost a week, before being finally located by a P-9 Kanaloa operating under guidance from a MQ-4C Triton out of NAS Sumay. She was a 508 foot long container ship built in the 1990s for the Sylvan shipping company, Castella Lines.

"Sentry 1-1, Savanna has not responded to both radio and signal hails. Knight 1-8 is launching for a HVBSS. Standby, over." Lieutenant Franklin said as the Captain ordered the launch of the MH-60R from the stern helicopter deck.

Master-At-Arms Second Class Michael Lucas gripped the Colt M4 Carbine as he fast-roped down from the MH-60R and moved with the rest of the Visit, Board, Search and Seizure team in securing the the bridge of Savanna. They made their way up two ladders before finally reaching the last bulkhead before the crew's safe room. With the increasing regularity of International Piracy, most large container ships such as this one had a safe room. Slowly moving down the passageway, the signs of bloodshed and struggle became even more grim and evident. Red stains covered the bulkheads. 7.62 Shell Casings covered the floors.

Lucas's shipmates stacked up against the entryway into the saferoom. Gunner's Mate 3rd Class Edwards grabbed the lock and pulled back slightly before Seaman Beck rushed in with the M1014. Expecting to hear a blaze of gunfire from AK-type rifles and from his pointman's own 12 gauge shotgun, MA2 Edwards found himself surprised by the silence. Instead of a blast, the only sound to come from Beck was an audible "Holy Shit." as the rest of the VBSS team entered the compartment. 20 bound and lifeless bodies lay before them. Systematically executed.

Within 10 minutes, the highest echelons of power were notified of the atrocity. What happened became evident not long afterwards. The end of the war in Saxony left thousands of weapons unaccounted for. The widespread Wankan-made Gewehr 74 was no exception. In particular, some 1,200 of these rifles were aboard the Savanna along with dozens of rocket-propelled grenade launchers and enough Surface-to-Air Missiles to bring down a small air force. Where they had gone, however, was a far-more unknown subject. But one thing was certain, this extremely well-organized theft bore all of the traits of the "Hǎi sān hé huì", the Sea Triads. The Sea Triads were a well-organized and well-equipped group of pirates. They were perhaps the best pirates in the world. Operating from ports in Canton and moving their monetary assets to their bosses in Chen, they were an elusive multinational organization that wasn't just involved in piracy. Human smuggling, racketeering, extortion, cybercrime, counter-fitting, smuggling, and the sex trade were also in their dossier. Though not technically a terror group, they were inclined to use very public methods of retaliation to solve their problems.

El Royale, Catalina Island
Sylva
27 April 2015

She was pretty alright. They weren't kidding when they called her the Black Widow. Her alabaster skin and deep green eyes contrasted well with the few Western features, such as the Light Brown hair, that she had inherited from her Sylvan father. She was a sophisticated kind of woman, at least that was the impression that she attempted to convey as she sipped on the $25-a-glass wine bought for her by an extremely over-zealous Ensign from VFA-82 in a vain attempt to get himself taken home that night. That was a good thing for Lieutenant Clayton Ascort. It made her the only girl not being chatted up by an OS Navy flyboy in the entire joint. El Royale was the hottest club on Catalina Island and fortunately, for the fliers of Carrier Air Wing 17, it was also within walking distance from the gate of NAF Catalina. The dance music pulsed through the entire club as Ascort took a few steps towards the woman with a beer in his hand. His, of course, was unmarked and non-alcoholic. Rule one of being a spy, don't get drunk. Rule two of being a spy, blending in is always a good thing. Therefore, a bottle of O'Douhl's without the label was the perfect cover.

"What's a pretty gal like yourself not dancing over there?" Ascort said as he slid over to the barstool next to Claire "Carly" Loyola.

"Listen here, bud. I'm not interested. One of your other sailor flyboys already hit on me tonight. No, thank you." she replied with a distinct Halu'a accent.

"Well, let me ask you, Pretty Lady, what makes you think I'm an aviator?" Ascort replied softly.

"Let me take a guess, the cheesy sunglasses right there hanging off of your shirt, for one." she said, pointing out the pair of aviator sunglasses dangling from the pocket of his white polo. "Plus, your attitude doesn't do you any favors."

"Okay, you got me there. I'm an aviator." Ascort lied. "But let me take a guess about you considering that you took one about me."

"Fine, go ahead. Lord knows you're the only one not wasted in this place already." Carly half-laughed, half-scoffed.

"You're from Halu'a, aren't you?"

"Holy shit, I'm from Shady Shoals. How the hell did you know that?" she replied in shock.

"I just have a knack for guessing these things." Ascort said.

"Alright, sit down, Sailor. I want to hear the rest of it." she said in a slightly more, seductive, tone.

"Now, that introductions are out of the way, let's get down to business." Ascort said. Carly giggled softly. "I've got just one question, where's Yi?" Her face turned sour.

"I don't know who you're talking about. This conversation is over." she said, getting up from her bar stool and immediately attempting to move towards the door, giving the entire room a quite good view of her posterior through the seemingly skin-tight party dress she wore. Ascort quickly caught up to her and drew his Smith and Wesson SW99C and pushed it directly into her back and began to walk directly with her, keeping the compact pistol very hidden.

"If you don't think we're on step ahead of you, you're very wrong."

"Who are you? ONI? Cop?"

"Starts with an S."

"I see. When did SIS start becoming this bold?" Carly asked with a giggle. Ascort was playing her game now.

"We've always been a little like this, I suppose." Ascott replied cautiously, scanning his surroundings, worried that she was going to tip off the bouncers at the club's door in some way and he'd have to get his feet wet.

"You know, it doesn't have to go this way. You killing me or you taking me in. I'm sure there's some other way." she said, biting her upper lip. She was using all of her feminine features to her advantage very quickly.

"As much as I would like that, there's only one way this is going down. You're going to take me to Yi."

"And how much is in it for me?" She asked. She wasn't going to just give up this lifestyle that the Triads provided her for free.

"250K. OSD. All unmarked."

"That's quite a chunk of change." she whispered as they exited the club, his pistol still placed in her back. The red cobblestone city street was full of two things. Eager tourist party goers. Or those who'd had a little too much of it. Carly rounded a corner into El Royale's seemingly-hidden parking lot and stepped up to a metallic grey BMW i8. Elsewhere, this may have been flashy, but not on Catalina.

"If you get in and put the gun away, I might just take you to my Uncle on the condition that I still get my money." She said in her seductive tone.

"And why exactly am I supposed to trust a girl who's about to sell out her own blood for money? Ascort asked.

"Darling, my family is money. It's been from the time that my Uncle sent for me after having my father killed." She said as Ascott pulled the pistol from out of her back and reholstered it. She quickly opened the driver's side door and motioned for Ascott to get in the passenger's seat.

"Also, Darling, one more thing. We need to tie up a lose end before we leave."

"Oh?"

"Juan, the bouncer, knows I'm not allowed to take any of my....contacts, into my car with me. So, just put two rounds in his forehead, won't you?"

"Just get me close enough while you're driving by." Ascort said as the BMW roared to life and came around the corner quick enough to screech the tires. She quickly slowed down enough for Ascort to get a view of the muscular man underneath the small awning outside of the Club. Ascort pulled out his SW99 and quickly put two .45 ACP rounds in the man's chest, sending him tumbling backwards. Screams of terrified girls at the party followed. Carly rolled up the window and speed up again, quickly dodging through a lane of traffic. Ascott braced himself as her car took a sharp turn down another busy city street.

"In all fairness, I did ask for the forehead. Did SIS not teach you how to do that or did you just get lazy?"

"You know that you're just as crazy as they say right?"

"Only in the good way, darling."

RQ-4B
45,000 Feet over Southern Canton

The large, charcoal-grey colored drone banked through the night sky as its sensor suite quickly went to work recording and processing the information before it. The O.S. Air Force high altitude surveillance aircraft was equipped with a secondary and special package for this mission. Designed to eavesdrop on phone conversations, the AS/RTP-1 was initially designed for use aboard the OSAF's C-12 fleet, a modified group of Beechcraft 1900s and Super King Airs used for everything from utility roles to Electronic Intelligence gathering.

"Yi's a fucking fool if he thinks that we can use or sell off all of these guns in time!" One man said on the recorded phone call.

"Yi knows what he's doing. If anything, we're going to just use them against some random Yankee cop or Marine the next time they try to stop us. Hell, we could spray up half of Shady Shoals." Another man said. A light pitter-pattering of rain on a tin roof could be heard in the back round.

"You people are all fucking fools. The Columbians are going to kill us all if you fucking continue with the idea that we can beat the N.B.I. We need to lay lower. In six months, the Feds will be looking somewhere else." the first man said. Vocal recognition software embedded in the AS/TRP-1 identified him as Colonel Zhou Jūn, the head of the Triads' arms trafficking network in Canton. Responsible for moving approximately 5% of the world's illegal firearms, Zhou carried with him weight in the organization and had the firepower to back it up. However, what he didn't have, was the ability to make billions, overnight. That was the job of Jin Min, the other man identified on the phone call. Min was the de facto head of the Triads cybercrime unit. On the N.B.I.'s most wanted list, Min had a knack, despite his hacking abilities, to get himself into the headlines. He'd taunted OS authorities for years. Be it with pictures of him posing with stolen online credit cards or even the time when he used the email of a board member of a Sylvan bank to send a taunting email to the N.B.I.'s analysts who were in the process of hunting for him through cyberspace.

What neither of them knew was that the OS's eyes and ears were her shield, and they were everywhere.

The Acropolis
Chandler, Capital District, Commonwealth of Sylva

“It’s too…red,” First Minister Stephen De La Calle said, looking at the campaign poster displayed in front of him. “I mean, what am I, a communist or something? This honestly looks like a Red Militia propaganda flyer, especially with the uniform. Can we use any other color?”

Stephen walked back behind his desk and fell into his seat. His campaign manager rubbed her forehead in frustration, as the poster’s designer looked to the ground in shame. “Look, Stephen. The Libertarians party color is red. And why we cant change the color itself we can change how its displayed. We’ll have to have you do another photo shoot…but we’ll make it look less…communist.”

“Please do,” he said, as the group left his office. “And send in whoever is next in line.”

The next in line was the Foreign Minister, Ricardo Brauer. He held in his hands a stack of manilla folders, probably another one of his office’s dossiers. Despite his title, the Foreign Minister also served as the First Minister’s daily briefer. “Ricky,” Stephen said. “Good to see you. What’s in the news today?”

“Well,” Brauer said, taking a seat. “Lets see…the Organized States found the Savannah, the missing cargo ship. Twelve dead Sylvans and eight Chen onboard, killed by what the OS believes to be Sea Triads. Of course, Duke Yichao wants to meet with you regarding the incident, as does the Colombian President.”

Stephen frowned and crossed his arms. “Let me guess…Yichao wants to convince us that this justifies Sylvan involvement in Canton? He’s invading with almost a million men, why does he need our help? We’re already selling him our guns!”

"Actually, Mr. Yichao was going to suggest that Sylvan Navy vessels help patrol the Canton Sea, to prevent piracy and further weapons imports into the Republic.”

“That’s…actually, that’s rather doable. Talk to the Admiralty about it. I assume the OS are in on this deal?”

“Yessir. They are gathering a small carrier task force, but they have taken interest in our new stealth destroyers – obviously they want to see them in action.”

“With any luck, their won’t be any action,” De La Calle said. “But go ahead and do it. What did the OS president want?”

“They want us to crack down on the illegal arms flowing out of ports. We’re a hotbed for the production, sale, and exporting of armaments due to our lax gun laws. But the corruption in the Port Authority, especially in Catalina and North Carmi, is really bad. Its about time we take care of it – but ONI and DIS both use the same excuse, ‘other priorities.’ Then they quote Saxony and stopping Wankan terrorists.”

“Well, tell DIS to step up their game. What else is on today’s dossier?”

“ONI reports some seriously disturbing news from Erquin. Ever since they broke off from NAZI, there has been a string of mysterious and potentially connected events. Most recently, their Air Force commander was killed in a ‘car accident.’ A car accident involving a bomb.”

“Oh? Have you checked with the OS? They have a habit of blowing stuff up and not telling us,”

“No, this was a domestic operation. Someone on the inside of Erquin’s inner circles wanted Holbrook dead, and they did it. The odd thing is that Holbrook was a relatively conservative and middle-line guy politically. Didn’t speak out against the government, didn’t speak out for it. Which makes us wonder why he was a target.”

“Well, what does ONI suggest we do about it?”

“For the moment, nothing. But on another note, Hilary is still appealing for League membership.”

“And why haven’t we accepted them?”

“Bureaucracy, paperwork, protests,” Brauer replied. “Secretary General Calabrese is working as fast as he can, but the admission of Erquin to the League is unpopular among the voting blocs. Recent polls show less than forty percent of Sylvans support an alliance with Erquin. Understandably, the North Carmisians are among the most upset.”

"After they hit Nolivar with artillery during the Saxon War? Yeah, false fire or not, I’d be pissed too.”

“Well, its bound to go through anyway. In this one case, I can safely say that the polls can go to hell.”

“Let’s see…there is also the matter of Valencia. The Urulandians are deploying five more brigades to Valencia, and the Allied Nations is almost finished bringing in the entirety of their expeditionary forces. Giving both sides roughly equal numbers…to roughly two divisions. ONI and COSAF HIGHCOM are recommending that we deploy the Marine Expeditionary Brigade to Cardenas and Puerto Del Oro, in case either side makes a push for our chunk of the country. ONI also reports its only a matter of time before Urulandia and the Allied Nations start shooting at one another.

“There are also fresh reports of Wankan atrocities in Saxony. Of course, the Volksrepublik is denying the accusations that upwards of two dozen Saxons were marched out into a field and shot yesterday for refusing to turn in illegal radios and contraband weapons. The media would be going mad with this one, but with so much else going on in the world they’d rather focus on new, important, material and breaking news that directly concerns the livelihood of our citizens. Like the most recent story cramming the headlines, that a dog was reunited with its South Carmi family after being lost for nearly two years.

“And, finally, on the homefront. Alvarez, your main political rival, has gone up in the polls. The current situation puts you at 47% and him at 33%. The remainder is divvied up around other ministers vying for your spot in the next election cycle, but you still have a lead. Nevertheless you should try and change the trend if you want your job next September.”

“Thanks, Rick. Anything else?”

“Nope. The world’s just as shitty as it was yesterday. I’ll send for the coffee.”

West Bank
Huanghe Valley - Canton
0600 hours - April 26, 2016

“Bombs! Take cover!”

The men of the Cantonese 75th Airborne scrambled to find shelter as an ear-piercing shriek, followed by many more, suddenly broke out through the dawn sky. The air attacks on the Cantonese positions have proved devastating, especially the bombs from high altitude bombers. Massive craters were littered all over the once peaceful countryside. Rice fields were partially drained due to the forming of makeshift ponds in bomb craters. Whole tree groves were knocked down and buildings were demolished, hopefully with nobody inside.

These attacks have demoralized the Cantonese forces, and reduced their combat ability marginally. However, they still posed as a major threat for the Chen 17th Airborne, which was still holed up in the foothills of the Zaoshi Mountains. The paratroopers had lost almost a fourth of their men killed or wounded, and many of their light tanks and APCs were knocked out or immobilized. With a seemingly expendable number of Cantonese militias arriving in the area, they needed support fast.

The Cantonese soldiers braced for impact, waiting for the familiar shockwaves and explosions they routinely faced. Suddenly, the sound of falling bombs stopped. Nothing had happened. The confused troops looked at each other with surprised expressions on their faces, and peeked out of their foxholes, one by one, only to notice fluffy green parachutes suspending the bombs up in the air. The bombs turned out to be nothing but leaflet bombs, releasing thousands of printouts all over the Huanghe Valley. A few dozen of them landed all over the Cantonese position.

A soldier picked up one that landed onto his shoulder and examined it.

Image

It named various major Chinese dialects (Mandarin, Wu, Hakka, so forth) arranged around a large character “Yue” in the center, and off to the left read “We are all Han Chinese. Join Great Chen. Be rewarded”. Others started to pick up the leaflets.

Field Army South HQ
Fort Zhaoxia - North of Huangshan
0900 hours - April 26, 2016

A number of general officers of Field Army South was gathered around a large table, with a detailed map of southern Canton laid perfectly aligned to the sides. The large, intricately decorated room, reminiscent of those in the imperial palaces, was silent; only the ticking of a clock and the very faint hum of the ceiling lights could be heard. Some of the uniformed men peeked at the clock, then back at each other, anticipating the arrival of their superior, Field General Chen Faling. One nervous individual even took off his wushamao to wipe the sweat off his forehead, a very risky move for this occasion.

Duchess Faling was not known to be the calmest or most considerate person in the dynasty. Although slender and meek at first glance, trying her patience or even agitating her the tiniest bit is one of the worst things a person could ever think to do. Not only would he or she be facing the wrath of the demon she is, but also the Emperor as well, who considered his cousin a beloved sister. Many believe that she was put in charge of Field Army South for this reason, although those who actually knew Faling knew otherwise. A cunning and manipulative person, the Field General loved to find the weaknesses of her enemies, toying with them as if she were a cat who had caught a mouse, before going in for the kill. Even without this knowledge, people called her “The Poison Rose”, a name owing to her innocent beauty, but deadly nature.

Army General Zhang stroke his greying beard and tried his best to keep his composure. He studied the second hand of the clock as it made its way to the top, reading the numbers in his mind.

57...58...59…

The door creaked open. In stepped Faling, wearing her fengguan and daxiushan, symbols of her imperial blood. Everyone in the room snapped to attention and bowed. She studied them coldly, her nose tilted slightly upwards into the air, and signaled at a guard to close the door. The generals got up, and Zhang and spoke as kindly as he could.

“Madame Chen, forward elements of the 2nd Cavalry have stopped dead in their tracks. Their supplies have been cut off, moving further down our route of attack would result in high levels of attrition. As of now we requested more routine airstrikes in the area, hoping to wipe out the Manchu positions and hinder their ability to conduct guerrilla warfare.”

The room fell silent. Silent glances were exchanged as the anxious generals felt their livelihoods at stake. Zhang could feel his forehead sweating, and bowed back down again. Their commander did not look happy at all.

“Madame, we are trying our best to do as you say. Forgive us, your Highness”

“Forgive us, your Highness!” cried the others, bowing down.

Zhang heard chuckling, and looked up. The Duchess walked towards him, a playful grin on her face. She began to circle around him, trailing the tips of her fingers over his shoulders. The general, now stiff out of fear, remained perfectly still.

“Dear old Zhang, what do you do when a thistle stings you?” She pinched at the general’s neck as she said the word “sting”, her nails leaving a deep red mark in his flesh. Zhang flinched, but collected himself up within seconds and replied calmly.

“You take care of the wound, your Highness.”

“Is that all to it, General?”

Zhang stumbled, realizing he had fucked up.

“Well your Hi-”

A quick swipe at the face was all Faling needed to silent her subordinate. Her palm struck Zhang’s face with the force of a brick, sending the general recoiling backwards. He fell onto his back and looked up in shock, holding his now redden face with one hand.

“Idiot! You are all idiots! You destroy plant. The whole grove of them, don't just leave them sitting there!”

She walked turned towards the map and pointed at numerous villages. Her eyes were burning with anger or malice; nobody could really tell.

“No supplies? Take all of theirs. Hiding in the woods? Bomb all of it out. Seeking refuge in the villages? Burn them all down. If this population is not going to be supportive or at least smart enough to stay out of this, they will all pay the price. This is total war, and I do not want any more delays, is that understood?”

The generals bowed at once, holding their hands up to their faces.

Shi de, yes your Highness.”

The Field General suddenly smiled, her eyes brightening up. She spoke with a voice of contentment.

“Good. I want the AA guns in the front, load them up with HEI. Light up those mountains if you even think you see a fighter hiding up there. Make sure to secure all bridges and passes in the area, and get the engineers to fix any demolished infrastructure, fast. Meeting adjourned, I will see you all again at 2100 hours. Make sure to see to this...suggestion of mine.”

She smirked, holding her hands behind her back as she turned for the door. Her guards held it open for her, and soon trailed behind her. The room was silent once again, but this time the focus was on Zhang, who remained lying on the red granite floor, staring blankly at his own reflection. He did not need to hear to what his peers were whispering to know that most likely, his fate had been sealed.

Village of Wuzhituo
Zinjinshan Range - Chen/Canton Border
1900 hours - April 26, 2016

Located deep within rugged territory, the isolated village of Wuzhituo has become self sustaining and inwards looking in the past few centuries. Things remain practically unchanged in the community. Water buffalos pulled plows in the rice fields, people chopped up logs as firewood, artisans worked their various professions in their streetside shops. The only real change was the car that was owned by the prominent Zhang family, an old model from the 50’s that sputtered as it rattled down the old roads. The villagers of the settlement are not particularly welcoming of outsiders, however. They think of them as nothing but disturbances to the community; all they want to do is continue on with their lives.

When Captain Liang’s company arrived at the village, they were not expecting the antipathy that they were met with. Mothers shooed their children back into their homes as those on the streets glared at the soldiers. This made the scene very unsettling for the light infantry, who knew that there were enemy militiamen in the area. The soldiers moved slowly, looking back and forth between villagers. Any sudden movement could might as well mean an ambush was going to take place.

The company, a part of 3rd Battalion, 8th Brigade, was tasked to scout out and destroy any hostiles before the main armies pass through. It was not the only unit assigned this task, as almost half of the 3rd Mountain Division was deployed as a forward screen. So far, enemy resistance has been almost near nonexistent, but as the field army closes in on the Huanghe Valley, enemy opposition is expected to become more stubborn. This village was especially critical to the mission, as the pass near it is one of the few that crossed a series of steep mountains.

An old man, with a white beard stretching long past his chest, was awaiting the troops at a larger building at end of the path. His tattered hanfu covered the millions of folds in his timeworn skin. Captain Liang dismounted from his APC and walked up to the village head, stopping to bow.

“Good evening, laoxiu, I humbly ask if my company can secure this village and use it as an outpost, until the main army arrives”.

The elder studied the officer with narrow eyes, looking at his holstered pistol before looking back into Liang’s eyes.

“What benefit would it bring us to let a bunch of soldiers to stay at our village? In fact, you might even attract those fighters over here to attack us for harboring you!”

“As you are all subjects of Great Chen and the Zunwu Emperor, we will ensure that you will be sheltered from any danger in the area. Laoxiu, we are fighting for your freedom from these Marxist oppressors, I ask you to support our cause. We will be on our way before dawn.”

“More like now, fucker”

Captain Liang spun to the left just as a metallic click was heard, and stared directly into the barrel of a .32 revolver. Time seemed to halt; milliseconds seemed like seconds themselves. The captain looked at his attacker. A short, bald fellow, with a stocky build. Liang barely saw the Red Militia symbol on the man’s shirt before Liang heard a loud crack ring into the air.

His assailant dropped dead, a fine hole in the broadside of his temple. A young soldier was holding up his rifle, smoke rising from the muzzle break. Chaos broke loose in the village, with civilians running away and men dressed in assorted combat fatigues showing up all around the company. The village head limped his way up the steps of his home and tripped, just as three bullet holes formed in the wall in front of him. Captain Liang dragged him into the house and helped him up.

“Stay here, we’ll fight them off!”

Liang ran outside to find absolute mayhem on the battlefield. The sound of gunshots polluted the air, while the wounded screamed and moaned. Insurgents were firing rockets into the convoy, while Chen IFVs ripped those unlucky enough into pieces of meat. A RPG ripped into Liang’s APC and detonated, turning it into a ball of flames. The captain was knocked onto his back, but rolled up and crawled to a nearby building, where some of his troops had set up a MG position. He grabbed his radio, which was blistering with chatter, and pressed the mic to his face. He yelled to be sure he was heard above the others.

“All callsigns, this is Azure Actual, enemy combatants all around us, various ranges, form defensive lines along the buildings. Azure 4-4, deploy mortars between lines, fire for effect. Azure Actual out!”

Although reaction time was slow, the company slowly pieced itself together into a defensive pocket. The mortar team, or what was left of it, pounded away at Red positions, sending dirt and limbs flying meters into the air. The Sylvan manufactured AT4 rockets decimated enemy technicals and buildings with far more accuracy than their RPGs could deliver back with. Liang himself saw an enemy combatant, in his late teens, fall dead in his sights. Within a few minutes, the firefight ended as quickly as it had started. The whole village and the surrounding fields were littered with debris, bodies, and burning vehicles. Remaining fighters had retreated into the surrounding wilderness, with the mortar team still firing on their supposed locations.

Casualties were assessed, with 6 soldiers dead, 17 wounded, and among the enemy 22 confirmed kills (with supposed figures up at 40 killed and 50 wounded). A few civilians were caught in the crossfire, and a family’s house was hit with a RPG with the whole family inside it. All eight were killed by the collapse.

Liang rushed back to the elder’s home to find him crouching next to the dead pistolero. The old man looked back at the Captain with red, bloodshot eyes, and slowly turned back towards the body. He was shaking his head slowly, and his body was trembling.

“I can’t beleive it...Ma Chaozhou’s own son...I don’t know how many more of ours joined them...they must have led the Reds here. I can't believe it. How they can betray their own townsfolk...”

The Palace of Virtuous Dominion
Imperial City - Dongjing
2000 hours - April 26, 2016

“Give me a SITREP of our international standing, General”.

Marquess Lee, the Minister of Defence, was leaning over a desk, his hand drumming the tabletop. His tired face was barely lit up by the glow of a few monitors, which contrasted sharply in the dark room. Below him sat Divisional General Ping Tianwan, a balding member of the Military Intelligence Command. He typed away on his keyboard, seemingly ignoring his superior’s question. After a brief while his mouth opened.

“Well, the Sea Triads are really grinding our gears. Lately, the OS has just uncovered a huge shipment of weaponry from the Sea Triads, and from their intel we can infer that they will take action. Not the best thing as some suspect us of working with the pirates. Won’t worry too much though, the NBI aren’t bad at their job”.

“That might be an issue…”

The Minister got up and walked up the narrow corridor of seats and computers towards the exit. Amidst the clacking of keyboards and radio chatter on the comms, the Marquess whispered under his breath, a characteristic he has when thinking strenuously.

“What to say...what to say…”

He opened the door and stepped through, his moves robotic, and started towards his office. He thought of the Sea Triads. Chen involvement with the Sea Triads. Great Chen had made deals with the Triads every once in awhile, allowing them to operate from bases within Chen territory if they refrained from selling arms to certain Cantonese militias and dealing within Chen borders. If these deals were found out, this could mean a very angry Organized States breathing down their backs.

“We need to win this war, fast”

Lee stormed into his personal office, which resembled a large oriental study, complete with portraits, decorative carvings, and numerous books and scrolls. He picked up an ornate phone and began to dial, before sitting down at his lavish desk.

“Your Majesty. Yes. Yes, I know. Sir the OS, they... Yessir. I know sir, I will, but hear me out. The OS has some idea about our deal with the Sea Triads. Sir. I know sir. Your Majesty, I will revoke the agreement immediately. Yes sir, all ships will be ordered to target any Triad vessel from now on. Sorry sir? Oh, yes, the invasion is going as planned. Field Army South has stalled, however, I suggest raising a further three field armies to reinforce our forces and occupy the lands we’ve taken already. Yessir, they will be mobilized in a week. I will see you soon, your Majesty”.

The Minister hung up, gave a sigh, then began to dial another number, directed at the Military Reserves Command. This was going to be a very long night.

Final Note:

Invasion of Canton ends with complete Chen military victory on the 10th May. However, difficulties with integration, mismanagement of occupation along with widespread general anarchy leads to an organized guerrilla campaign by Canton natives against the invaders. Chen pulled out 1st January 2017 after more than half a year of bitter fighting which significantly drained the Chen economy. The impoverished region continues to endure brutal civil wars at the absence of a central authority.
