Armor
The Panzer III Ausf. has 30 millimetres (1.18 in) of homogenous steel armor on the front, sides and rear and a second 50-millimeter (1.97 in) layer of face-hardened steel applied to the front and rear hull, as well as an additional layer of 20 millimeter (0.79 in) of armor on the front hull and turret. This additional frontal armor gave the Panzer III frontal protection from most anti-tank guns at all but close ranges. The sides were still vulnerable to many enemy weapons including anti-tank rifles at close ranges.
Armament
The Panzer III was intended to serve as an anti-infantry and support role; in the initial design stage a 50-millimetre (1.97 in) cannon was specified. However, the infantry at the time were being equipped with the 37-millimetre (1.46 in) PaK 36, and it was thought that in the interest of standardization the tanks should carry the same armament. As a compromise, the turret ring was made large enough to accommodate a 50-millimetre (1.97 in) cannon should a future upgrade be required. This single decision would later assure the Panzer III a prolonged life in the Landser Army.
The Panzer III has 7.92-millimetre (0.31 in) Maschinengewehr 34 machine guns mounted coaxially with the main gun, and a similar weapon in a hull mount.
Mobility
This Panzer is powered by the 300 PS (221 kW), 12-cylinder Maybach HL 120 TRM engine. Top speed varies, depending on the transmission and weight, but is around 40 km/h (25 mph). The range is generally around 155 km (96 mi).
Armor
It features 50 mm (1.97 in) single-plate armor on the turret and hull, and side armor of 30 mm (1.18 in). The weight of the vehicle is 22.3 tonnes (24.6 short tons), which required a corresponding modification of track width from 380 to 400 mm (14.96 to 15.75 in) to reduce ground pressure. The wider tracks also facilitates the fitting of ice sprags, and the rear idler wheel and front sprocket have also been modified from their original design. It also has a 30-millimetre (1.18 in) face-hardened appliqué steel plate bolted to the glacis—in total, frontal armor is 80 mm (3.15 in) thick.
Armament
This Panzer is fitted with the 75-millimetre (2.95 in) KwK 40 L/43. When firing an armor-piercing shell, the gun's muzzle velocity is 990 m/s (3,250 ft/s). The gun is mounted with a single-chamber, ball-shaped muzzle brake, which provides just under 50% of the recoil system's braking ability. Firing the Panzergranate 39, the KwK 40 L/43 can penetrate 3.35 in. of steel armor at a range of 1,830 m (6,000 ft). A 7.92 mm (0.31 in) MG 34 machine gun is mounted coaxially with the main gun in the turret, while a second machine gun of the same type is mounted in the front plate of the hull.
Mobility
This Panzer has a powerful Maybach HL 150TR, and the new SSG 75 transmission, with six forward gears and one reverse gear. This allows for a top speed of 30 mph, and a range of 68 miles.
